Thank you for this, it's amazing how many "fishing for beginners" videos just don't mention reeling in at all. Probably because it's just second nature to most anglers, but I'm just starting out so I know absolutely nothing. Thank you again.
Thank you so much 4 years later. Fishing granny here and have been losing a lot of big fish. Now understanding its partially my reeling technique. Your a great teacher!
Glad you do videos like this for people, I was blessed with a dad that was a fisherman and learned saltwater fishing, I use the 2 in front and 2 in back hold.
Hey Josh: I call it the 4F: Four Fingers in Front and using Forearm for leverage: works perfectly on spinning rods that have the generous amount of cork in front and the tab for the hook has to be out the way too. (the one you used is exactly what I find most comfortable).
Ok great video well explained, going to show this to my buddy so he can learn from it. I salmon fish from the shore and it’s hard to explain this to him now he can learn after seeing your video .
This helped. I have to fish in a few hours with this guy and I’ve never fished before. He is like a pro and I don’t rly want to tell him I haven’t fished before. Thank you for saving some of the embarrassment 😅😂
Great advice for a Lady Fisher that is picking up a rod again after nearly 30 years. Learning now instead of just guessing and all the ones that always got away...🤔
Thank u bro i Like how you say all important stuff in short time and nit making video longer and it can be understod very easly. Keep the content up and good luck with fish
yea but it can get discouraging if you never catch anything..i went fishing again yesterday..at least i taught myself how to catch minnows by hand..that was pretty fun,,,
I’ve had lots of issues with pike getting off my baits right at the kayak when they jump, any tips for what to do when they jump to lose less fish? I seem to have the line too tight when they spit, and unsure what to do to correct it
I just lost two big fish because i didnt know these rules..when the fish was running i got so pumpped i started fighting right away..tomorrow im gonna let him.run and when he stops.im gonna start.reeling in like you showed..thanks
I was fishing and i had something big but everytime i put my fishing rod upwards i saw that it took more line in the water and then i had to reel that back in so it seemed like an endless circle. In the end i had to give it so much pressure that i just couldnt turn my mill anymore because it was just to hard and strong. In the end i lost my bate. What did i do wrong?
Capt. Joshua, could you maybe do this again the end of April for those of us that have forgotten how to fish due to cold and Ice? Nice video and informative for the beginner. Was that a Red Bellied Chris Fish you were fighting? lol God Bless Guys!!
Sorry Joshua's Wifey. I would Never refer to you as that. I thought you were the video person so Joshua needed someone else to be the fish. Pretty talented though taking video AND being a fish. I should have known though with you having one (two counting Josh), children, AND one more on the way. Hope you are doing well 🙂
Does this apply to small fish in ponds/ creeks? There aren't big fish in the places I go to and they don't put up much of a fight. I'll usually keep my rod upright, give a tug upwards if i feel a bite and start reeling. This seems to work for me, but was looking for proper technique. Any help would be appreciated.
Hey capt josh I just bought a Daiwa bg 3000 and I’ve seen you’ve been using that spiderwire camo braid ! How’s it holding up for you ? I was looking to spool up some 15 pound test on it . Let me know please ! Thanks
Awesome brother thank you. Very informative. -But wouldn't allowing the fish to run some of the line, wouldn't it just make it easier for it to release from the hook viewing you gave him more line, n it's in its habitat
Hey its early morning and me and my kid are going to our first fishing trip. New for both of us with a rod and spinning wheel. Hope it goes well. THANKS for the vIdeo bro. Been a great help.
@@SaltyscalesIts was a fustrating outing. The line got badly entangled inside the spinning wheel. We had to remove the wheel few times to free it. Wonder where we went wrong.
Just getting back into fishing after 15 years or so. I have one question, is it okay if I don’t let the fish pull my line? I see you let it run, should I be doing that as well?
I just don’t know how to set my drag to the correct amount and there are no good tutorials. Surely if you pull up with the drag loose it will just give line?
I've lost a couple after getting them to the bank. Should I lift them from the water with my hand instead of by lifting the fish out of the water using the line? In other words, should I keep the fish in the water and bend down to pick it up?
I always wanted to have a dad that takes me fishing , but it never happend untill i started fishing myself. Totally gonna be the "old man" type dad that has a wooden boat and takes his kid fishing
I went fishing and I had around 3 fails 2 times I yanked it and it kinda came off like twice and the last was the fish went into some grass and I guess it came off
Lost 2 of the biggest fish I’ve ever had on line this week. Don’t think I had enough tension, or I’m just used to fighting dinks. Thanks for this video
I made the mistake of constantly reeling it in just like he said not too and my reel exploded in my hands and broke haha. I didn't even know also that there's drag and the reel is supposed to let some line go when you catch a fish. I set it to the tightest and my line kept breaking. Being a beginner is so overwhelming when you don't know anyone who fishes
I’m confused on when to to let the fish “run”. I see videos of people fishing wacky rigged sinko worms and when the fish hits they set the hook immediately and reel it in.
That is typical with bass fishing. However when you hook something with weight, especially greater weight than your line is rated for, you should use the rod and reel to tire the fish.
Today I had about a 8-10lb pike grab my spinner and because I didn’t reel it in properly it snapped my line. As soon as I hooked him I tightened my reel and tried to pull him in, he fought hard and snapped my line. If I had seen this video I would’ve easily caught it
Thx dude amen to jesus Matthew 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
please work, i have 4 minutes before I go fishing and I made a $50 bet on who can catch the most fish with my friend, I don't even know how to catch a fish
Thank u bro... A very clear and concise video on the fundamentals. I'm going to totally show my kids this video. Thank u again :)
Al Lasad You are welcome, thanks for the comment.
Line twists when you reel a spinning drag.
Thank you for this, it's amazing how many "fishing for beginners" videos just don't mention reeling in at all. Probably because it's just second nature to most anglers, but I'm just starting out so I know absolutely nothing. Thank you again.
Yea mahn...was finding a vid like this and beginner vids only show casting

Glad I could help!
Going to fish for the first time soon. Glad I watched this first, seemed unlikely constantly reeling was the right method.
Great Explanation of the basics on ' how to reel in a fish' ...
Glad you enjoyed it

Thanks bro.
thank you. I am a newbie and i tried fishing for the first time the other day. didn't catch anything but that is ok.still learning. going today again.
Sometimes it is more about the experience than the catching, keep at it.
yea but it can get discouraging if you never catch anything..i went fishing again yesterday..at least i taught myself how to catch minnows by hand..that was pretty fun,,,
First to comment, I just love your videos. I am not the best at fishing and your tutorials really help me. Thank you.

Great vid man thanks....I’ve lost some big ones but thanks to your video I’m pretty sure I won’t lost another one 😎😎
Great stuff. It was clear and very informative. I like that feathering technique you showed. I think i need to graduate to that. Keep it up!!👊👊🖒🖒😁
I just started fishing and this is perfect man, I was like ok I got everything I need, now what happens when I catch one haha Thank you so much!
Same here ahah, tried 2 weeks ago and today i tried all by myself and i was "ok, and now if i catch a fish what do i do?"
I just lost two big fish because i didnt know these rules..when the fish was running i got so pumpped i started fighting right away..tomorrow im gonna let him.run and when he stops.im gonna start.reeling in like you showed..thanks
Sorry to hear that
Same here
Me too! Darn so disappointing. One time I let my rod get too lined up with the fish and snapped my line...and he was BIG!
This was a great video. Thank you.
Great video man!
Well explained. thanks.
Very helpful, thank you!
Great video thanks. New to fishing

0:42 what does “set the hook” mean? How do you do that?
This is a great video! Thank you. Very Clear and understandable
Glad it was helpful!
This was super helpful for a beginner like me!
Glad you liked it!!
Great video
Capt. Joshua, could you maybe do this again the end of April for those of us that have forgotten how to fish due to cold and Ice? Nice video and informative for the beginner. Was that a Red Bellied Chris Fish you were fighting? lol God Bless Guys!!
I imagine you all are tired of the cold by now? Nope it was my wifey lol.

at my local spot the fish seem to stick to the bottom like a rock and not swim once hooked, any tips for this?
Good video, with good fundamentals, even ends with a joke. Thanks partner
Hey capt josh I just bought a Daiwa bg 3000 and I’ve seen you’ve been using that spiderwire camo braid ! How’s it holding up for you ? I was looking to spool up some 15 pound test on it . Let me know please ! Thanks
Spool it with the Spiderwire camo and you will not be sorry. I love that line and no I am not affiliated with Spiderwire.
does this trick worked for fishing on the river
Yes indeed
Awesome brother thank you. Very informative. -But wouldn't allowing the fish to run some of the line, wouldn't it just make it easier for it to release from the hook viewing you gave him more line, n it's in its habitat
I still can't figure it out, I have an old rod and reel, and the line is very loose. I can't figure out how to reel in the line at all. Any idea?
im new to this but why do you give the fish slack as soon as it gets hooked?
Typically you wouldn't.
Hey its early morning and me and my kid are going to our first fishing trip. New for both of us with a rod and spinning wheel. Hope it goes well. THANKS for the vIdeo bro. Been a great help.
Hope you both did well.
@@SaltyscalesIts was a fustrating outing. The line got badly entangled inside the spinning wheel. We had to remove the wheel few times to free it. Wonder where we went wrong.
can u say why you allow the fish to run if it starts to run
So it doesn't break the line.
My first catch was a perch and it was just barely bigger the the minnow that I used as bait
How Do You Make It Go? 0:41
Big fish make it go ;)
thank you!! First time fishing and I have no idea what I am doing.
great video

Yes, or use u know that thing that goes down mesh/net idk what's it called,
Nice video. I'm definitely going to show to my bother-in-law. 😆I should of filmed him.
Reely good video
Thanks
But what happens if you reel down and the end of the rod pops off?
I always wanted to have a dad that takes me fishing , but it never happend untill i started fishing myself. Totally gonna be the "old man" type dad that has a wooden boat and takes his kid fishing
great! Tnx!
Gotta remember to let him run some more, I’m too hasty. Gonna try the forearm lever instead of bracing it against my lower body. Too many bruises!
how about a landing video?
Autoo Zero hey bud just got your channel, can you get us back? Thank you
Autoo Zero I can do that.
thank you! wish i watched this in the morning before losing a big fish
Any time!
That's tough, sometimes those big fish are just too strong!
Thank you Joshua! Fish on for Christ🕊️
Any time!

i know you can say from experience, most new ppl dont know how to real in a fish very well
Thank u...
You're welcome
thank you
Thanks alot bro. I Keep brokenken off my reel

Caught a fish halfway thru vid thanks I used it and got one
That is what I am talking about
No longer will I lose a fish hopefully. Going fishing again this weekend

Just lost an over 15 pound pike. I reeled it halfway to the shore, and the arm sized big boy bent my hook and took the jig with him.
I bet his wife was like "what the fuck is he doing out there? he said he was going to mow the lawn".
She encourages me to do what I love, I got a good one...thanks for watching
Thank bro now no more breaking my spinning reel
👍👍👍
Thx dude amen to jesus Matthew 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
How does one that fishes not know how to reel in a fish?
James Kingsbury many people fish, that doesn't necessarily mean they know how to properly do so. This topic is searched for quite a bit.
James Kingsbury hey bud just got your channel, can you get us back? Thank you
now, I know why my Walmart reel fall a part. Cuz I was set it to a tightest,
Gotta be gentle
💥💥💥👍
please work, i have 4 minutes before I go fishing and I made a $50 bet on who can catch the most fish with my friend, I don't even know how to catch a fish
Sorry to the fish I caught last week before watching this video, which all most likely have holes in their lips as I didn’t know how hard to yank
