@Tactical_blasters 139 Heh. This is why I panfish with 8lbs mono and a 8lbs fluorocarbon leader: there's always some jerk, like a bass or catfish, waiting to steal your favorite lure and sacrifice it to whatever dark gods they worship. ;P
@Tactical_blasters 139 Good to hear. I'm a big fan of the perch family, and landing a a respectable walleye on #4 is the mark of a good angler, at least IMO. That, and it will test how well you tied your knots. :P
You should have included catfish since they have very sharp spikes on the pectoral and dorsal fins that can cause much worse injury than other fresh water fish.
I've only been finned by bluegill my entire life. Out of all the fish I have caught in my entire life,"which is thousands of fish" the small bluegill has got me 3 or 4 times. They are so small and jump around like crazy, which makes them more difficult to take off the hook.
Thank you so much!! I am 12 and not used to handling fish as u am fishing this helped me a lot since I'm going on an all day fishing trip to Lake Anna VA tomorrow
I’m so silly, I was purposely pulling my line out of the water when I seen fish going after my bait just b/c I wasn’t sure how to take them off the hook! 🤦♀️ 😂 I’ll study this video & try again this week. Thanks for the tutorial!
To do my best & try to learn. I’ll admit I was just scared of handling the fish, & at that time I had no one to teach me. I was with my best friend & her son. She wanted to take him fishing, & she didn’t know much either. I’m happy to report I did catch several small fish last weekend though! After my sister’s husband showed me what to do, he didn’t help me after that b/c I wanted to learn & needed practice. I’m still skittish handling fish but getting better the more I do it. Going again tomorrow & I’m excited! I’m hooked on fishing! Pun intended! 😂
I’m looking at this because I’m too scared to hold a fish because I don’t like how they like wiggle around and it feels so uncomfortable in my hand and it scared I don’t know why, Im just scared of holding a fish.. 😔
A nice tip on lipping bass is to hold them more straight up and down if you hold them a little sideways like in the video it can tear the delicate tissue around their mouth! Just a tip
You should show how to hold Pike or walleye. When I first caught a pike I had to have my cousin hold his body and tail while I held his bottom jaw open with pliers and used another pair of pliers to grab the hook. I'm a bit more experienced in handling teeth now but it's usually intimidating to first timers.
That's the way my older-"big" brother who has bigger hands told me to do it. I remember getting pierced by their fins on a Blue-gill. And once they were flailing so much the hook got pierced on my hand. Fishing sucks, but fun with your big brother. I don't even like to eat fish.
Great video dude! , you were mostly right about the trout but the one danger you missed is they have sharp teeth . however when I was writing this comment I haddent watched the whole episode.
These are all the right ways to handle fish, but I'd like to point out that beginning fishers may want to use a pair of simple work gloves to feel safer handling fish (preferably a durable thermoplastic type).
Nice video, just a heads up on bending their mouth can dislocate their mouth and when you release them they probably will have trouble closing their mouths and eventually decease.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but shouldn’t you hold a trout in the water and move water over it’s gills to allow it to stabilize before releasing it, so it doesn’t sink and suffocate?
late reply but yeah if you care about the fish and want other people to catch it its best to wet your hands so you don't rub off the slime coat Their slime coat is the first layer of defense for infections of all kinds much like our skin is If you're netting them in make sure your net is wet as well (which is usually always is if you're getting the fish out of water)
Any tips for people like me who never touch a fish even the death fish? When I do want to touch it, it feel like some tingling feeling I don't know the word for it and in the end it will make me don't want to touch it.
@@nathansimpson5721 thank you for the tip! Still haven't got the chance to try touch the fish with glove yet but I almost can try to touch fish using a piece of cloth and when the fish is struggle that is where I got scare 😂. Also the fish I tried to touch was catfish, should have try on a little fish but oh well. I'll try it somewhere in the future.
Generally, it depends on the species of fish and water temperatures. Sensitive species (i.e. trout) don’t handle air exposure as well as hardier species (i.e. catfishes). Air exposure is least detrimental to all fishes when water temperatures are cool (fish can be out of the water longer) but even short term air exposure (60 seconds) can result in significant mortality when water temperatures are warm. The general rule for handling fish is to keep them in water as much as you can (keep the fish in the water when removing the hook for example) and minimize air exposure as much as possible (take 1 picture instead of 5) if you’re planning on releasing a fish.
Biggest fear is that it will be stuck far inside the fish's mouth. I remember fishing as a kid once and I couldn't get the hook out because so far in. I ended pulling out entrails of the fish. I was traumatized after that and stopped fishing all together. There is one thing to eat a fish for food (humanely kill it quick and painless). There is another to brutally murder a fish just to take out a hook.
They dont have scales like normal fish that you would think of. Their scales are very small and smooth the body of the fish almost feels like skin instead of scaly. trout are very sensitive to begin with and when you handle them with dry hands it removes the protective slime off of their body and makes them much more susceptible to death even after release. its good practice to just make sure your hands are wet/ damp before grabbing any trout.
During catch and release, use wet hands to reduce the risk of rubbing too much of the slime layer off. Adversely, when touched with dry hands, the natural coating is likely to rub off the fish leaving them exposed disease.

Gloves will remove the slime coat off a fish and if you release it, fish might be in trouble. Best method is a wet hand and these techniques.

It you’re keeping it to cool definitely keep it hooked when you kill it then remove when it’s dead
Yeah, I guess killing it instead of leaving the hook (which will slowly kill it) is the probably the best way, worst case scenario.
