Alright, Kevin. Great video. I think it’s really difficult to use the best of what you have when you’re on trips and holidays that aren’t conducive to “proper” filming. Given the time and ergonomics, the A7C is definitely going to be the best image quality but you do have to have the time etc. to get the best out of it.
Overall, the GoPros are probably the best for real “off the cuff” capturing of instantaneous moments. They’re defo not the best for overall for image quality but are easily the best for robustness and ease of use (when they work properly 😂).
However, and I totally agree, smartphones are probably really close to being the ultimate travelling companion for “out of the pocket” shooting. They’re not as robust as a GoPro, not as high quality as a “proper” mirrorless or DLSR but you can’t argue against the convenience of being able to shoot videos on the same thing that you make phone calls, text, web brows and load of other things that you can do with something that’s always with you.
I’ve personally found GoPros to be the best overall for me. But that’s mostly because I don’t want to “nanny” whatever I’m using and I want to be able to throw it about a bit. Even though I think that for my use, we are probably very close to where a smartphone will be able to do at least 70% of what I’d want. I still think I’m someways off from losing a GoPro completely.
Anyway, great video based on “proper” practical use and real world scenarios for use.
    Cheers, Dave.

Thanks Dave. I was limited by which photos and videos I could share in the video as it was all of family.
Yeah it was interesting to get out there and try different filming. The lack of a tripod didn't help with capturing good photos and videos, nor did the fact I was usually holding our son too haha.
I think it's easy to get bogged down with specs and features. You need to get out and test everything. That's something you do well on on David Harry Uncut, extensively testing phones and cameras to know what they can do.
The GoPro is far from perfect, but I did enjoy how much it simplified recording. It's just a shame how bad photos and nighttime footage is.
I was initially tempted to only take my phone, until my wife reminded me that the main reason I bought the A7C over alternatives was that I could use it on holidays!
I got the media mod and light and a few other attachments earlier this year. I should really get out and do some videos with it. I did a few tests of the setup in the car after I got them, but I didn't notice a world of difference between the mod mic and default mic. I suspect an external mic makes all the difference.
Moving forward, I'm keen to get some more lens for the A7C and then pick up another Sony full frame camera in the future 👍
