    It's not just a "homage" to a random old manga, Urasawa LOVES Tezuka. His "Monster" is basically Tezuka's "MW" except Monster isn't as bleak and nihilistic ("MW" is straight up all about horrible awful people being horrible awful people and then dying in really shocking and disturbing ways)

    While I love both eastern and western comics I have to admit that the Japanese have a deeper understanding of what can be done with the medium. There are really good western comics out there but I've never come across one that has sucked me in like some manga.
    I can't think of a single western comic that I can genuinely put on the same level as one piece (the world building is just so expansive and well done). Nor can I think of a western comic that I can compare to Monster inasmuch as storytelling.
    That being said, X-Men, in all of its many many forms, will always have a place in my heart. I love the idea of mutants. It makes for such an incredibly diverse power system. Plus, there are so many interesting and well developed characters in the series.
    I'd like to get into more western comics but I don't know where to start. I've had bad luck. Can anyone suggest something that'll knock my socks off? (Preferably something with a deep interesting plot and no superheroes).

    I agree on Urasawa being the greatest mangaka purely for the breadth of his work and depth of the stories (he often collaborates with writers but still). Where I disagree with you is that he clearly does NOT make each character that visually unique, certainly not in his earlier works. I think he has become much better at it more recently but still gets lazy. The most glaring example of his visual repetition was in Monster when several different doctors in the beginning of the story all resembled Tenma's fat balding friend. I distinctly remember being confused as to whether they were supposed to be the same guy. Main characters he's pretty good with in general, but side chars is where he definitely shows a lack of creativity. Also, the NOSES. He really loves that honking bulbous hawk nose but in reality relatively few people have them.

    • @iliveinsideyourhouse1367

      Really? I think side stories on monster are amazing

    • @sir_john_hammond
      @sir_john_hammond 6 років тому +3

      Pay attention. I was talking about character visual design, not stories. But also when I say "side characters" I'm also not talking about someone like the military guy, or Schuwald's son but characters who only appear briefly.

    • @iliveinsideyourhouse1367
      @iliveinsideyourhouse1367 6 років тому +1

      If you talking about the character design then i agreed and if you mean side characters like eva, julius, roberto, etc. Then i disagreed, they're characters are great.

The concept and mystery is great, and the beginning chapters were very engrossing. But I felt around the middle all the way to the end, you can tell Urasawa just didn't know what to do anymore. Not that it seemed bad, but it was certainly a rather bland and generic introduction to a story.
    I'm at least confused that you didn't try a little harder for your favorite "comic book creator". It seems like you devoted more video-time to far less interesting personalities.
