I actually held onto some clothes for the last 4 years that didn't fit me. When I looked at them I didn't feel good, not because I was holding onto something I would never fit in, but because I had failed myself by staying in bad habits that I KNEW if I put my mind to I could change. It took me quitting my job and focusing on getting myself mentally and physically healthy. I recently did a closet clean out and went through 13:48 everything. I'm so glad I kept those clothes. Some I felt were something I may never fit in, so I moved on and got rid of them. I can see those feeling like "bullies" when you sit and wish they would fit, even if it may not be realistic. I know mentally I am focusing on healthy, not a certain "goal size" So now, as I get in physically better shape I won't be spending ridiculous amounts of money on clothes, because I have some things to transition into. I think THAT was what truly held me back. Hundreds or thousands of dollars sitting there and knowing they were going to waste, but now they'll come in handy! My goal is to be where I feel comfortable by summer, and I'm moving in that direction. Whatever doesn't fit after that, will get a new home! I thinks it's all how you look at things
I declutter my closet by moving the first five things to the right each time I get ready. If I don't want it, it goes. That way it doesn't become a huge mess. Everyone has to use what works for them. We are all different. I have to do it in small chunks or lose motivation. Good video. Makes you stop and think about what really needs kept.
Realistically, we don't need much!! My closet is very, very tiny - less than 2 feet long and only 20" deep. I have an up & down bar. I work in a professional setting so I have 4 suits, 8 blouses, a couple dresses and a couple cardigans. The lower rack has my casual clothing - a couple bottoms, a couple tops, a couple hoodies and a few skirts and my workout items. Total wardrobe= 40 items (almost all are thrifted or vintage). 🇨🇦

I make my own because of you., And at this very moment my bed is filled with of my clothes / shoes and etc.. from my closet .. A rod in my closet broke and sent everything into shambles. That sweater looks great on you. I do my closet like that. It is what really works for me. Thank you for your dedication in wanting to help us with your knowledge and experience. ❤️
I went through the clothes in my closet today and got rid of some clothes that I was holding onto for no other reason than they reminded me of my dead sister. It's been 13 years. I got rid of the sweater i was wearing the day my sister died. I haven't worn it in years and it really hurt to let it go. It shouldn't have, but it it truly did. She died on Christmas Eve 2010. Our tradition is that we open a present on christmas eve. I got rid of the Utah Jazz jersey that I opened that night. Again, that shouldn't have been hard, but it killed me inside.
Thanks for the great video, it was a good reminder that I haven’t been keeping on top of my closet organization. I switched all my hangers to wooden ones years ago, as you described - buying a pack here and there until finally I had replaced all the plastic and wire ones. I bought a roll of weather-stripping tape (tape on one side, foam on the other) and cut pieces to put on the shoulders of the hangers - works great to keep clothes from slipping off!
I recommend postponing laundry ... If youd rather wash clothes than wear whats left clean, maybe you should let what you're not wanting to wear go. Secondly, as a caregiver, I keep "maybe" pile at the folk's house. If i find i have to spend the night or change, I grab based on need alone from a limited selection. Aka long sleeves. This allows some use and detachment until I let the items go (or return to my closet). Also useful if you're traveling and want to bring new stuff back - take your maybe pile, and don't bring it home
Thank you so very much I am wanting to do this soon. I use tea bags for smelly shoes 👞 👟 I will be trying the baking soda hack 😅❤ I enjoy your videos always from Bandon Oregon ❤
I started off with velvet hangers, then switched to wood because they were more esthetically pleasing. I ultimately ended up going back to velvet. They take up significantly less space, and my tops stay on them better. I suppose it just comes down to personal preference.
Love your videos. Thankyou! Why do Nth Americans keep their shoes in their bedroom closet and not all together near their main entrance in shoe cupboards or somewhere separate? They are dirty and germy for one and secondly it leaves so much more room in your bedroom cupboards for everything else.
We're in Australia and hubby and I have shoe racks and shoe boxes in our walk in closet. Would never have them sitting out in the main entrance , looking untidy.
Canadians always take their shoes off when entering their house, or maybe sometimes a friend’s home, and storing them would be a seasonal thing. I keep my summer shoes, sandals in an under the bed box in the winter reverse in the summer
Hi Melissa I love all your videos and learned so much from you. I accidentally spilled coffee on my cashmere jumper . Can I ask for your advice what kind of detergent can I use to clean the coffee stains off? Thank you

Hey! Great video, the decision fatigue is real! I have a question: I had jeans that had a stain on them that I treated with alcohol. Unfortunately I used dish soap on the same spot while the alcohol wasn’t washed away completely and now I have a blue stain. It’s on jeans. Do you have any recommendations on how to get that out? Can I get it out?
Oh! Sorry to hear. Seems that the alcohol may have effected the jeans dye, so you may be out of luck, at this point, treating the spot may make it worse!
I’m guilty of having lingering socks with holes, and mismatched socks for that matter, so when I come across a sock with a hole, single or not, I throw it out now
I hate darning so socks with holes go in the fabric recycling too. I've made it less wasteful by buying multiples of the same socks so that when I toss one holey sock I can still use its mate as a pair with another identical one. That also means I don't waste time matching socks, which is great! One bin for thin black, one for thin navy, one for thick black and one bin for "others" (mainly novelty socks I get as gifts).
@@fuzzyx2face You're welcome! It has really made my laundry easier. I also keep a "socks-only" laundry mesh bag hanging on the side of my laundry basket so dirty socks go right in when they leave my feet. I wash and dry them in the mesh bag so I just need to take it out of the dryer and immediately sort into my sock bins. No more lost socks!
For those of us with ADHD this doesn't always work because we might not get through everything and then we are left in a pile on our bed. For us It might work Better to work in sections.
Try really small sections. I do just t shirts or pants at a time. I also leaf through first and anything that needs repairs that I don't have the energy for I ditch. Same with items that need a lot of special care. I don't have shirts with floppy collars or things that need a lot of ironing after line drying. The only things I dry clean are my heavy wool winter coats and blazers. Turn your hangars around each change of season and those not turned around by the next change are probably not your favourites. (Not counting special occasion stuff) Keep it manageable or you might not finish the job.
What if you love everything? Everything is in great condition, fits and you find it impossible to get rid of anything?? Yep that’s me. I desperately need help and have way too much. I find it so difficult to get rid of more. Ugg 1 tip is to get a color analysis done. That helped me get rid of a lot of the tops that were in the wrong colors but now I have a lot of the same wow colors for me. 😭
If I would repurchase the item again for full price, I tend to think it’s worthy of keeping. But also, be honest with yourself how often you wear an item. After I decluttered some items a few weeks ago, I can’t really remember what I’ve let go now.
Hey Mellisa.. Hope you answer this. I am asking this from India. I am doing my new home and for the cupboards would you suggest I go with a something like a chest of drawers with the cupboard and half hanging? Considering Indian clothes and my style I prefer to wear Kurtis n leggings and comfortable jeans or track pants and tees. I personally do not want a one door cupboard in my bedroom as I feel I have to open n expose it all even if I have to get a hanky. So could you throw light considering i am in India and how should I design my cupboard
If I hang my jeans like that 😅 Oh Lord I had no space left 4 sure! 30 vintage Levi's and much more from other brands. And since I learned to do sashiko they are all awsome and I ll never let them go! So hang is not going to solve the problem 😎 However I do really enjoy the way u can reinvente space, but I think closet is not the one 😉

Probably because most Americans(especially women) have too many shoes, lol
My main entrance is into the kitchen. Only room for 1-2 pair of shoes there.
You looks so beautiful! I love your sweater! ❤
Thank you lovely Melissa.......great tips and in time......can I read your book online as I'm in Egypt Africa.....
Great channel…love the sweater! Can you share where you bought it from?
Hi Melissa I love all your videos and learned so much from you. I accidentally spilled coffee on my cashmere jumper . Can I ask for your advice what kind of detergent can I use to clean the coffee stains off? Thank you
I would just soak that part of the sweater in warm water with gentle fabric soap (like woolite). Don’t let it set. Let it air dry. Repeat.
Great suggestions!
Where is your sweater from ? ❤
Very helpful!
Thank you.
