How to calculate distances on the map or in reality using the map scale

- Learn basic calculations concerning the scale in maps: how to calculate the distance in reality from the distance on the map, and vice versa.
The scale of a map is actually a ratio, such as 1:200,000 or 1:35,000. A map scale 1:30,000 means that one unit (whether inch or centimeter) on the map corresponds to 30,000 such units in reality. That understanding is the basis for all the calculations we do.
Essentially, to go from the map to reality, you would multiply by that number 30,000, and to go from reality to the map you'd divide by it.
Thank you for this❤❤

thank you
Nice mem
so I'm not sure if i'm confused but, for my equation I have 1 in. : 150 mi and the question was "9 in." so I multiplied 9x150 and it got me 1350. So I took away the 0 and put "1.35 in." as my answer. PLease someone tell me if i'm confused ;-;
3 years later
i think you got it right good luck
Appreciate alot Mrs but can you try to use statement questions like maybe some of us can't panic to understand otherwise thanks teacher
Given 1:200000 convert to word scale ,how do you work out this?
Wouldn't it be 1cm equals 0.2 km on the map
Or 1cm equals 20 000 cm on the map
good teacher
What is the difference between the two different scales given here 1:50,000 and 1:100,000
1:50,000_big scale
1:100,000_small scale

How did you get three fourth
too comprehensive for my liking. Thank you .God bless you
i love youuuuuuuu
Its a bit difficult though 😢can u do it a bit more easy and explain
🎉🎉❤❤
where did 5280 come from
There are 5280 feet in one mile.
The first question I don't understand
How long is the distance in reality, juxtaposed to the scale.
Too complicated..n she is just doing, not explaining any figures from where it comes from???
thank you
