@A9107 YDM technolog is at least 30 yrs (anywhere around the world) old but faithful and standing the test of time and terrain. Might I also mention that many of the YDMs in India were ALCO prime movers (does that ring a bell buddy?). Of course YDMs are not built anymore.
wow..now thats what I call a smoky fella! btw,is this a normal thing in India? Its kinda rare to find a loco smoking out that much out here in the USA especially after the EPA emmission treaty..
So I see, well in Calfornia we are stuck on using these new generation ES44DC & ES44AC locomotives because that Schwarzenegger character issued out a clean air act.But of course on the other states of the ol' USA you can still see lots of smoke puffing monsters !
Pretty much normal for India, probably due to lower grade fuel, hard(er than usual) driving and 1950s technology. Maintenence is of a pretty high standard there.
@chirantanaranya It wasn't a notion filled rant, but the experience of travelling thousands of KMs behind these machines, the smoke produced WAS due to harder than usual driving and I certainly wasn't belittleing the YDM4s, I'm a huge fan. And YDM4s do not generally smoke hard during transitions, in fact the DLW built YDM4s don't even have transitions, just field diverts.
@A9107 ..For a country that has the world's 4th largest passenger network and arguably 2nd largest freight network, first please try to realize how much is going on for the astounding reliability and overall timeliness Indian Railways maintains. But that needs one to observe; writing what only meets the eye doesn't...
@A9107 ..well, this is what serves notion filled rants without fact having to do anything here. US or India, or for that matter anywhere, you'd find YDMs 90% times spewing smoke when it "transitions" during the initial acceleration. Hasn't gotten much to do with "fuel quality" or "hard driving" (Driving ??!!). Ignorance is forgiven, but please don't belittle those YDMs..
The real clag monster!
Another great video of the YDM 4 accelerating

@chirantanaranya What exactly are you trying to say? Your comment doesn't make sense.
Tasty, tasty, very very tasty!
