McCartney Plays BASS on Long and Winding Road!

- Okay, the song is a masterpiece, but there have always been things about it that bugged me, the main one being John's bass part. So..I thought it'd be interesting to hear what it would sound like if Paul played bass. This is from the "Bass Players in the Wrong Band" series, • If U2 Hired Chris Squ... but in this case, it's the RIGHT bass player!
Just for fun.
Nelson Montana: Bass and re-mix
Phil Spector did not compose the orchestration. He just produced the recording. The orchestration on 'The Long and Winding Road', 'I Me Mine' and 'Across The Universe' was composed by Richard Hewson.
Did not know that. Thank you.
I actually like the orchestration on this song, and this is coming from someone who considers Spector to be a no talent hack and a parasite to the real talent. I think it's because, TBH or IMHO, the song isn't that great in the first place. If it were a great song, adding all this would be over production and would ruin the song. In this case, it saves it.
I want to heal the sadness of my brother who loved the Beatles and died of blood cancer.
Someone once said John Lennon was playing bass out of tune and Ringo Starr said John Lennon playing bass out of tune is still better than most! Great line Ringo and you are absolutely right!

That was very well played and in the right style and super fun. Kudos.
For me, a bit too busy, like he did on Something. But he is Macca, so it's OK.
Very notable on a conceptual basis. A bit busy and/or strong in certain areas, but kudos overall. Well done for being "just for fun", as you say.
No Paul Bass would not be so busy. Some parts are interesting though.
Years ago I thought it was Paul on Bass. why not, he's the Best bassist! Of course John or George had to play it in the "Get Back" movie
but as far as recording, wouldn't be Paul❓ But I guess Phil Spector" released the song before anything could be changed.
This is a good mix! I like Pauls voice more dominat, Strings laid back, and that Mcartneyish bassline 👍🏼
A friend of mine just sent this to me. OK, so Macca would never be QUITE this busy on one of his own songs or on a ballad. Still, none of that takes away from the fact that this is pretty friggin' impressive. And I'm saying this as a fellow bass player. Oustanding work, Macca-wanna-be (but hey, deep down, aren't we all?). And why was he so busy - why did he do some of his best bass work - on other peoples' songs? Think about it: Something, Don't Let Me Down, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Hey Bulldog, Savoy Truffle, Only A Northern Song - and that's just off the top of my head. You've left me no choice but to subscribe to your channel.
Much appreciated. There's lots of stuff in lots of different styles but for more along these lines, you might want to check this out. ua-cam.com/video/384OE6smVZ8/v-deo.html
@@NelsonMontana1234 While I'd agree that bass is where U2 is weakest - as a side note, Clayton, Gene Simmons and Tom Petersson are my favorite whipping boys - U2's musicianship is weak all around. To be a good band, they'd have to replace all 4 of them.
@@timothyd9543 That's just the first of a playlist. There are 25 of them! (Including a replacement for Gene Simmons).
@@NelsonMontana1234 That I'll watch. Maybe have one for Tom Petersson. I wouldn't mind him so much if he didn't get all show off with a 32 string bass or whatever it is when he only plays root notes and never uses the other 31 strings.
A bit busy in sections when it's not called for, but a neat interpretation of the song.
2:26 - 2:40 is sublime!
Gracias a Spector
i think around the 1:16 mark you went too far but this is nice otherwise, would love to hear a bassline like this over the naked version of the song
It took a while, but, here ya go. Thanks. ua-cam.com/video/7UUYzPLCqzE/v-deo.html
I remember when this song was released, and it was all over AM radio. At the end of the song, Paul sings Ya-yay-ya-ya. The DJ said. after
all they years they still sing Ya-Ya-Ya! ❤🚶♂🚶♂🚶♂🚶♂🌞
Let It Be & The Long and Winding Road on one album. Amazing.
nice job with the bass!
Nice, really nice and seems softer
Nicely done.
It's Paul's song, so there would be less notes, and even lesser notes because of the song was supposed to be an epic. Also lower in volume. You could barely hear the bass on "Stairway To Heaven" until it was re-mixed.
In one of many of George's interviews he said how pissed off he and John used to get having played bass on a track only to find that Paul had come back in and re recorded it!! Actually Jeff Lynne did the same thing during the Wilbury's sessions!
And here's the "Naked" version: ua-cam.com/video/7UUYzPLCqzE/v-deo.html
Bring me memories of the 1960s.
There is nobody like the Beatles! They changed the world for the better. I have loved them from the first time I saw them on Ed Sullivan, when I was fives years old and still do! All there music is great, as a group and individually.
Too busy. This song has to breathe.
Your very well done rendition👍accenting the instruments and no background orchestra for me would have sounded much better.
That was basically the approach I took when I did the naked version
Have you got the tabs?
Sorry, no. I have hundreds of vids and I just knock them out and go to the next one. In case you don't know, that little gear on the lower right of screen adjusts the speed, so it'll be easier to figure out. Enjoy!
I actually like the Naked version of TLAndWR. It's perfect.
I don't understand the title.
Lennon played bass on TLAWR -- not very well. I made recording of what it might sound like if Mac played bass. (With a little exaggeration).
Nice lines but a bit too busy maybe
What if..... maybe if you played the piano fills on bass and swap the piano for a strumming guitar ?
Nice as a bit of fun, especially like the held note on the second chorus, but actually much prefer Lennon's original. Sloppy as it is, there is something strangely right about it.
"....in is his bass playing......." What??!?!
You're the only person out of twenty one thousand who is confused by that typo.
This actually sounds more like Joe Osborn.
I'll take it!
I would too!@@NelsonMontana1234
Love the general variation at this listening of TLAWR tho'
Muito carregada. Nada como a versão original, mesmo sendo John
Way way way way way TOO much.
not baryton guitar ....a Bass VI is a real bass not a baryton guitar :)
Billy could have played the piano...
The bass here is a bit distracting from the melody and overdone sometimes.
Don't like it. Too busy. Too many notes. You should have kept it simple as George did on Ho Darling or Paul on Something.
You missed the point, but, thanks for the tip.
THE DRUMS sound awful on this. This can't be Ringo.
Absolutely BRILLANT! That's what Paul would have played!
