Beautiful car! I was 14 in 1964 when my dad bought a new Galaxie 500. I begged him to get the XL because the interior was so cool, but he was too practical for that. It was a 352 V8 with three speed standard on the column. I learned to drive in that car, and did most of my dating in it. I was already a detailing nut and kept it looking like new for years, including the engine compartment. This video makes me want to go looking for a 500XL of that model. I would probably want the 390 automatic with floor shifter simply because that was the one that caught my eye on the showroom floor at 14. The look of that car inside and out is burned into my memory.

my grandmother who was selling real estate in 63 bought a new '64 Galaxie 500 four door hardtop in this color with a 352 off the lot at Escobar Ford in San Pedro calif ..in '67 she bought a new Plymouth and sold the Ford to my folks...in 70 it became the car each one of us kids used as we got our DL when our hot rods were down ....good times
Hell yeah! When I was a kid, our next door neighbours had one of these in black, think the interior was black with red accents. In summer when I'd be in bed, I'd hear it as they'd pull in their driveway, always sounded great. I got taken for many an ice cream cone in this car. Thanks for the memories. Awesome owner too! This was a great car
i had the same car in high school!!! fire engine red 390 with a 3 speed stick craiger ss wheels. never lost a race, i loved that car my dad bought it 4 me. god rest his soul.
Ford Motor Company really knocked it out of the park with the design of the 64! I have a 64 Galaxie in Dynasty Green also, and get many thumbs up and conversations at the gas station. I'm never getting rid of it, as it was my late father's car.
I have always liked these mid 60s Fords. The XLs had such beautiful bucket seat interiors. The color and just everything about this car is cool. Great car! Great story! Thanks so much, Lou.

Very cool 1964, The Owner looks period correct too, just what you would expect to see driving in 1964 Chicago, Reminds me of something out of the 1980's TV series Crime Story. The sounds and the look, very cool. I didn't know about the T-Bird column in a Galaxie. Back in the late 1980s I had 2 chances to buy 64s both original Black cars and 390 cars. One toploader 4 speed Black and Black needing some work and One very nice Black over red with power windows in very clean condition. Like and idiot I passed on each, sadly I didn't have the space to keep them, wish I did. Greatful that there are people like this Guy who keep them going. It's always nice to see how they did things back then. Great work Lou ! Thanks for putting this together.
I remember first seeing this car previewed at the 1964-65 worlds fair Ford pavilion , it was one of my favorites although i must admit i had liked the 63 Galaxie body styling a bit more . Very popular color for this particular model at the time.
My father had a 1960 Ford Galaxie four door 500 in white then traded that in for a 63 in burgundy and then the last one he had purchased in 1967 which was also in burgundy all four doors. I did not like the 67 as much because in 1967 Ford had built what seemed to have been a larger car they did the same thing with the Thunderbird that year, my favorites of both models were from 1966 down.
lersh!! whoo, golly- this made my night.. the body style of this exact car might not have always been my cup of tea as a young fellow, but the entire concept and feel, captures the american dream. lightning in a bottle. thank goodness this isn't a resto-mod in bright red with garish wheelz. it's the fruition of local motion. pow!!

Ooooh, what a lovely restful oceany color! It's very much like the color of amazonite too, which I love, and so sharp with the silvery chrome... like a big pretty piece of jewelry. Beautiful classic lines to this Galaxie. I always enjoy the treats and pause lots to see it all. Sounds purry but the rev has a nice snarl. Very beautiful car and very excellent vid. Thank you... appreciated!
My grandpa had a 64 xl big block. It was pristine...garage kept. In 1984 they had to drive it ( their little truck blew the motor and they were waiting for there new car from the dealer),and were hit by kids running from the cops, they were doing close to 100mph, ran a light and hit my grandparents in the passenger front fender. They were hurt bad, but recovered and survived I believe because of how massive the galaxy was. It only had about 30k on it, not a scratch anywhere before the wreck. I was 13, I begged and begged to let them let me keep the car and fix it. My grandfather couldn't bear seeing it as it was so alas he sold it. I still miss that car.

Lou, our family had a 4 door(keep in mind, we were a FAMILY) Galaxie 500 solid black hardtop with grey interior with a 390. For a 4 door , she had a great look. The factory paint on those cars were very high gloss - or luster - and with black paint it had to be correct. Not to be outdone, in my small community of Dequincy, LA another family(the Jasper Russell clan), had a solid black FOUR DOOR '64 XL hardtop with a crème WHITE interior, bucket seats(of course) and other XL interior frills including factory pleated leatherette seats, 390 option as well. They were identical except his was an XL and had white interior. We Ford fans all know these 390 equipped cars b/c of the Thunderbird (with the familiar cross checkered flags behind the 'bird) badges behind the front wheel well on the front quarter panels. I have to admit, my hat goes off to Jasper's car, what with the crème WHITE interior in a black car. They both were very nice looking cars. I remember my dad holding the accelerator to the floor(when passing a slow car) and "breaking traction"(a little 'squeak' of the rear tires) when the car changed to 2nd gear on the Cruise-O-Matic transmission! Being a car lover yourself, I just had to share that old memory with you.
I had one, my first car. 289 car but it had a 352 with a mild cam, sounded great. Sold it about 10yrs ago. Can't afford to buy one now. I really miss it
I liked this model.year Ford. We had a 1965 Ford and it was a station wagon and it was called a Country Sedan. They road really nice and I love his color seafoam green in color. Studebaker used a color like this I loved it. A very nice vehicle. We had a 352 in our 1965 Ford Country Sedan wagan it was a four barrel like this but boy would not pass a gas station! They used that motor for years. He has a nice ride!

In1977 I bought a 64 XL. Mine was maroon with white vinyl buckets with black carpet. The automatic shift was on the console. Mine also had the 352 cid. Wish it still had it😢
My first car when I was 18 in 1984. Same color, Dynasty Green. Originally had a Wimbledon White roof, but it had been repainted to match the body. As I recall, the NASCAR versions were capable of mid 160's on the straightaways. How come the glovebox trim is from the regular 500? Should have the 500/XL emblem. The family car we had when I was a kid was a '64 Country Sedan. My dad bought it in Detroit when it was a year old, a year before he moved the family out to the west coast. He bought it from a Ford employee, a manufacturing engineer who was being sent to Central America to start a plant down there.

My neighbour still has his 1964 Custom 500 4 door that he ordered in the Spring of 64. He ordered the automatic and the 352 Option while the car is a desert sand metalic with the matching colour inside. The paint is original while I can't see any dents or body rush hole and the bumbers only need re-chroming. The FORD plant is 25 miles away and he was told by the dealer it would be 4-6 weeks but 2 weeks later they called about his car that came in. The cars on the lot weren't the colour he likes and had too many options or were the Taxi-Special with the inline 6 . It has the dog dish hubs caps while the Mirror was a dealer installed after market item because a mirror was optional . He puts it away in the winter because my City went from sand to salt in the 1970's to deal with ice and snow .

Good video, nice car. I would like to no more about that coolant reservoir separate from the radiator. Is it a recovery reservoir like the plastic ones in modern cars, or does the coolant flow from the engine into it before going through the radiator. Is it there because the car has a cross flow radiator and that was how Ford did that type of radiator. I had never seen that before. My dads Galaxie had a down flow radiator in his Galaxie. Could that be the difference had to do with the engine size? My 76 Cougar, 351 cu in, had a cross flow radiator, but not a separate tank like that.

I grew up with those cars and that is the first one that I saw the steering column slide sideways, seriously... very first one. The 352 was faster than the 390 on take off but the later had legs so you could go past anything but a gas station. I didn't like the fordomatic transmission, I mean they were okay but the four speed or even three on the tree was better. I did see one with the three on the tree and overdrive but only one. The power steering one were a joy but non power steering ones sucked. That car smelled clean even on the screen/LOL

Thank you, Lou Costabile I thinking buying fog lights like got on your Galaxie too!
You're welcome :-)
In1977 I bought a 64 XL. Mine was maroon with white vinyl buckets with black carpet. The automatic shift was on the console. Mine also had the 352 cid. Wish it still had it😢
Sounds like a great car :-)
Omg that car is so beautiful
Hi thomas renner, Glad to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Lou
The 64 XL seats were my fave of all time from Ford.
Glad you enjoy the seats in this one :-)
WOW!! Amazing
High praise :-)
Very nice ride ! Hoping to find one for me in the very new future. I was born in 64 and would like to get one that was built on my birthday
Hi edwh164, Glad you like this one, and hope you find the right car for you soon, Lou
Thank's Lou my friends dad had one when i was just a kid it was white there a nice car
Sounds like good memories from your childhood Mick W :-) Lou

Hey Lou. Lovely looking 64 Galaxie. I used to know a neighbour who had a 4-door hardtop version.
Hey Jason, Glad this one brings you back to nice memories in the old neighborhood :-) Lou
I love those cars, I'm the proud owner of a 64 galaxie 500xl white on black
You have a cool car too :-) Let's get other people interested too, suggestion, can you post this link to your FaceBook page? Lou

You have a cool car too :-)
a very nice looking car.
Glad you enjoy the looks of this one estpst :-) Lou
Good video, nice car. I would like to no more about that coolant reservoir separate from the radiator. Is it a recovery reservoir like the plastic ones in modern cars, or does the coolant flow from the engine into it before going through the radiator. Is it there because the car has a cross flow radiator and that was how Ford did that type of radiator. I had never seen that before. My dads Galaxie had a down flow radiator in his Galaxie. Could that be the difference had to do with the engine size? My 76 Cougar, 351 cu in, had a cross flow radiator, but not a separate tank like that.
Hi Daniel, Hmmm, I don't have the answer to your question. Hoping a Viewer with knowledge can share, Lou
Hi Daniel, Happy to read you enjoy this video. Hmmm, don't have any info on the radiator, Lou

Lou those poverty hubcaps are correct for the 64 Custom and Custom 500 sedans but not the original spinners that came standard on 64 PCs.

amazing car, sorry i can only give one like
Glad you enjoy this one :-)
I can imagine being in '64...receiving my draft notice...quitting my job...and selling the '64 Galaxie...so I could report for induction.
Hi MrShobar, That would be challenging. Lou
Nice :)
Glad you enjoy this one :-)
Now I know why Chicago is also known as Windy City...
You're right about that one :-) It was windy, cold, and damp so I was happy to take video under the hood and in the car on the ride so I could stay warm.
Does this still have a generator, or was it replaced with an alternator?
Hmmm, not sure. Hope a Viewer with knowledge can share.
There a way to move the seat up?
Hmmm, I'm thinking you can.
On 64 Galaxie 500/XL. That is what I meant to type.
Ok :-)
The only thing I would change would be the "dog dish" hubcaps. Use the nicer factory correct Galaxie 500 XL wheel covers.
Thank you for viewing and sharing your thoughts.

Hub caps are wrong

Is that a 427 or 390????
352 CI
So cool Lou, a Galaxy xl with T bird feature’s. Do you remember the weight? It’s a heavy car as I recall
I thought the carpet mat was a transformer symbol
That would be cool :-)

Thank you for viewing and sharing.
