Wow, I learned a lot from this video. I never heard of the Ram Rod 350, and I always thought the wing glass on the Cutlass ended in '68. I owned two '69 Cutlass S 2 doors, one hardtop and one sedan. The bench seat on the hardtop had the ribs running front to rear instead of side to side as on this F-85. So there's a few subtle differences on the featured car. Neither of mine had the black rubber blocks seen at the top corner of the front bumper. The steering wheels were different and the tail light lenses weren't in trimmed with the chrome. Confession, the '69 Cutlass S hardtop was originally my mother's car and that's where I began to learn tune-ups and detailing. It was also the car I pushed out of the driveway at night. 😮 The other Cutlass got a 455 swapped in and was flogged a bit harder. These cars were built very well all over.
Hi Mark, Happy to read "Wow, I learned a lot from this video" :-) I'm learning all the time from the CARetakers and I find that to be so much fun. @ryanweaver5867 I raced it around 1971-1973. Don't remember the year of the other car, but it was the spittin' image of this one. When you live in Simcoe, you're close, so you go often. I just remember the car as it looked. I'm actually quite fond of that design.

Hi, Lou! Sometimes it's the low-liners like the F-85 that make the best performers. And it's a simple formula that the mad scientist Dr. Olds knew. Put a big engine into the lightest body style and maybe a little something extra (W-31 in this case) and it only LOOKS humble! Actually the interior is quite attractive for a low-end vehicle. When this baby started up I swear I heard an explosion, and of course the ride was the icing on the cake! Interesting too how the brochure and print ads used the silent film theme. Many thanks, Lou and Ed, for taking us along on this amazing Rocket thrill ride!
Hi iswc27! "Sometimes it's the low-liners like the F-85 that make the best performers." You're right. Happy to read you appreciate the "humble" looks of this car :-) Glad you're along for the ride. You're welcome, Lou
Hi Lou! These are a treat, no doubt. Trunk & Treats were great. I noticed the rear gear ratios went from 2:65 to 4:66. Wow! I remember a 70' F 85 when I was a teenager. It was sitting in a small field off to the side of the DOH salt storage area. It was a straight 6. Couldn't locate owner. One day it disappeared. The F -85 is a reference to the Jet of the war era. First A bodies to receive the 455 Rocket engine was the rare Hurst/Olds. 68' model. My favorite car. Thanks guys. Happy New Year everyone! 🎆🏁
Hi Danny! Happy to read this brings back memories of the one you remember in the field. "The F -85 is a reference to the Jet of the war era. First A bodies to receive the 455 Rocket engine was the rare Hurst/Olds. 68' model." Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Happy New Year! Lou

Now that is a sleeper! This F-85 can be thought of as the answer to the Plymouth Road Runner. Very basic inside and out, no brightwork on the body (I love that ”F-Eighty-five" script on the front fenders), bench seat inside, in front of which sits that four-speed Hurst shifter - and under the hood is the all important W-31 350 engine with Ram Air! How cool is that? I remember seeing plenty of Cutlasses and 4-4-2's, but hardly very many F-85's like this one. If you saw one pull up next to you at a stoplight, you'd think, "Oh look, an F-85. Got a Chevy inline six. I can blow that away easy!". Then it's green light, and next thing you know, you're left staring in total disbelief. You missed those subtle W-31 decals on the front fenders! You got beaten by a sleeper F-85! I grew up within walking distance from an Olds dealer in Baltimore when I was a child. That dealer had a '69 F-85 outfitted for drag racing, and had its name on each side. I haven't seen it in years, but I wouldn't be surprised if the car is still around. It is probably hidden away. The dealer is still in business (it sold Oldsmobiles until the bitter end in 2004), but it relocated about 15 years ago and now sells Buicks and Hondas. There is an article of a '69 F-85 W-31 (like the one here, but it's metallic blue) in the January 2008 issue of _Hemmings Muscle Machines._ The magazine named it the "Muscle Machine Of The Year" out of all the cars it featured during 2008 in its year-end (December) issue. If you can, grab either one - or both! Thanks Lou for another wonderful video! My suggestion for a future video : a 1970 1/2 Ford Falcon (the Torino-based one) with a 429 Super Cobra Jet! There are some out there!
Hi Know Bodies Full, I liked the F Eighty Five script too. I thought that was so cool :-) You're right this F85 will surprise you! Glad to read this car brings back memories of the Olds Dealer you remember with the F85 Drag Car & the magazine article too :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing, and you're welcome, Lou

I went from no money to lnvest with to busting my A** off on Uber eats for four months to raise about $20k to start trading with Abby Joseph Cohen. I am at $128k right now and LOVING that you have to bring this up here
Totally! I picked up my first car for like a grand. It needed some work, but it was fun to learn. Thank you for this tip. I just looked the name up, wrote to her through her webpage and booked a session..
Abby Cohen hooked me up with a late-stage fund that got me in on private shares of some hot companies before they hit the market or blew up. Those investments totally paid off when the companies went public and their stocks shot up. Now, I’m stoked because I’m heading into retirement with almost a million bucks in my portfolio.
At 18 years old, the salesman and my dad, who was insuring my car, refused to allow it. So, I ended up with a 1969 recently traded a loaded 442, with 7000 miles on it. Looking back it was a great choice!
G'day Lou, I had to comment on this hit it out of the ball park W31 Oldsmobile. As Australia's biggest Oldsmobile Fan I know exactly what a F85 W31 is, super rare build to go in a straight line. Ed has basically my dream car Oldsmobile all I would ad is a factory tacho in the dash. A belated Merry Christmas to you and your family, and wishing you and your family plus your subscribers a Happy, Safe and Prosperous 2025. Cheers Louis Kats your number 1 Fan in Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺 👍 🇺🇸
Goodday Louis, Happy to read you enjoy this Oldsmobile :-) A rare treat for sure! Merry Christmas to you and your Family too. Ready to get going in 2025! Cheers. Thank you for being my # 1 Fan in Australia, Lou
Lou, I'm sorry to say it, but when it comes to Oldsmobiles, there's pretty much nothing that can beat the W-43 you featured a while ago. With that being said, this is one amazing find. I don't know if the owner told you, but this car, bone-stock looking as it sits there, has had the motor built, balanced, blueprinted, and makes 427 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. (At least, that's the claim from the selling dealer from where Ed got it). So yeah, I'd say Mr. Hettinger has quite the muscle car there. All the best! Looking forward to yet another find from you!

My dad was and OLDS only guy. We had a 65 Delta 88 that I pampered for YEARS since I inherited it as a teenager. 425 Super Rocket engine and god do I miss that car! The idiot that bought it from me threw a rod in it racing it too hard. I raced many newer cars (trans AM's) during my stupid years as a high schooler and won because it didn't have all of the pollution crap on it.

Mid-size Oldsmobiles of 1968-69, particularly the Sport Coupe and Holiday hardtop, were rolling leotards on the highway. This one has 1968 doors and 1970 grille. Oldsmobile would put it in production only for 1970 with all-yellow exterior including the bumpers with gradient orange/brown/black stripes and Olds 350 Rocket V8 power with 300 gross horsepower as the Rally 350.

Great F-85! In 1967, my parents bought there 1st new car. It was a '67 Olds F-85 4-Door sedan. It had the 330 C.I. engine with the powerglide trans. I was 16 at the time, but I was looking at a gold 442 in the showroom. I did not like there choice in buying the F-85!!!
So is an F/85 an option on the cutlass, kind of like the GTO was an option on the Lemans in the mid 60s? I also noticed the vent windows which I thought were gone by the 1969 models and the windshield wipers are not hidden like almost 1969 cars / Mr. Lou another great video
Hi Joseph-Frank, So if it's Pontiac, the F85 would be the Tempest, the Cutlass would be the Le Mans, and the 442 would be the GTO. Thanks for the kind words on the video, Lou
Love the simplicity of the F-85. I noticed it had an "S" on the nose, where the 442 in the brochure had 4-4-2- on the nose. I wonder if Olds didn't have a plain hood for the F085 so they used "S" noses. Does anybody know? Thanks for the great vid, Lou.
Hi Brian, Happy to read you "Love the simplicity of the F-85" :-) Hmmm, I'm not sure on the "S" vs "442". Hoping a Viewer with knowledge can share. You're welcome, Lou
Without the build sheet or the window sticker w31's are hard to verify. The fender tag tells you nothing. This engine does have the #6 heads, which is correct; the positive battery lead is correct along the inner fender and the pcv valve hose is routed correctly but I do not see the thick harmonic balancer on this engine. If this is a clone,it's a darn good one.

Hey Keith, its my car, it does have the thicker harmonic balancer, all numbers matching, carb, trans, everything, its legit, I even talked to the original owner, take care
This demonstrates to me, a guy who was in high school in 1969, how far we've come. This is car as toy. Loud, hot, unsupportive bench seat--everything here was sacrificed to the 'god' of apparent speed. Even then, and more so now, we knew and know that this wasn't necessary for a well rounded car, perhaps an American 'GT'. Perhaps the original owner couldn't afford to get a better-trimmed car after spending on the few options that helped speed--who knows? And certainly, for driving on American highways, a single-dimensional car like this was unnecessary and possibly irrelevant. After all that I'm delighted that someone chose to save this interesting example.

The American automobile industry in the late 1960s,early 70s was at its best! The federal government totally killed the industry. This is why it's in the shape it's in today. My Dad worked for GM at this time. As a kid at this time. I knew all about these cars. My Dad saw the decline of GM. He went from being proud. To hate GM. He ended up taking a partial retirement. Then worked in another industry. GM had a higher GDP. Than a lot of third world countries at this time.

Hi Bradydog, The F85 would be the "stripped down model" (compared to the Cutlass & 442) and the 350 I think is the small block (since they have a 455), however if an Oldsmobile person wants to share knowledge, feel free, Lou
just the basics lt wt car ,only opts big engine , 4 speed and go fast. what a muscle car should be , to bad todays muscle cars are more luxury cars , boat anchors with drivers nannies and power fold tilt everything , settings memory's for every power opt , sad the demon 170 only 50 buyers ordered a one seat drag car out of the 3301 built , most are fully loaded in collection's to be 'rare ' some day

In 1969 I purchased a new Cutlass "S" 2 door hardtop off the lot. I only kept it one year,. Most uncomfortable car front and back I ever owned and came with a ample selection mechanical problems. In my 30+ years as a GM employee it was the only Oldsmobile I ever owned. One was enough.

Disclaimer: I'm an old boomer Mopar guy 2nd car ever was brand new 'Cuda- say no more but here's the deal. Viewing these posts are somewhat confusing in the nostalgia sense for the OG drivers of these cars because old wrinkled fart blossoms never entered the picture, dig?. We were all young, dumb and full of c__. The dis-connect is seeing all those young memories ALWAYS wrapped around old fossils, usually NOT EVER the OG owners and they never drove these cars like they WERE DRIVEN aka like we hated 'em. At a certain age if you were too young to own it was your Dad's F-85 or 429 Marauder or 428 Thunderbird - that's the actual way it happened in the 60s and 70s. These old bubs (like me ) crack me up, the cars were meant to last a few seasons - 4 max before sh*t changed. The thing is people viewing these videos today might actually think old farts aka over say 40 liked these cars, lol NEVER HAPPENED. 🕰

What year was the W31/RamRod 1969? I live close to Cayuga and follow these very closely
@ryanweaver5867 I raced it around 1971-1973. Don't remember the year of the other car, but it was the spittin' image of this one. When you live in Simcoe, you're close, so you go often. I just remember the car as it looked. I'm actually quite fond of that design.
Great Olds with the right amount of pedals ! I’ll take 2 👍🏼

What an adrenaline rush it must be going through the gears 😈 Love the rear end of the 69 too Lou.
Hi David, Happy to read your thoughts. Fun to go through the gears on this one :-)

Hi Donald, Happy to read "Love this car" :-) My pleasure sharing with you. You're welcome, Lou
Hah! I totally forgot about the Dr. Oldsmobile ads!
Happy to read this brings back memories :-)

Keeping an eye out for a Mazda RX-7! Those things are classic and can be found pretty cheap.
Love it!
I've never heard of that car. 😍
Hi Uri, Happy to read "Love it!" :-) Glad to read you learned something new with this car :-) Lou
Love that Olds!
NICE!
At 18 years old, the salesman and my dad, who was insuring my car, refused to allow it. So, I ended up with a 1969 recently traded a loaded 442, with 7000 miles on it. Looking back it was a great choice!
Hi Vito, ....happy ending :-) NICE!
Looks like the one that was for sale at Volo a while back. Beautiful car. It was already sold when I seen it or I may have bought it.
This is that one.
How much was it?
G'day Lou,
I had to comment on this hit it out of the ball park W31 Oldsmobile.
As Australia's biggest Oldsmobile Fan I know exactly what a F85 W31 is, super rare build to go in a straight line.

@@loucostabile 👍👍👍
Raz, Being # 2 (Behind the W-43) is pretty good :-)
@@loucostabile You have yet to find something that can put that Olds (the W-43) in second place... probably a '75 Barracuda would change my mind.
@@razvancalin6453Is that a joke? Last Barracuda was a 1974.
Hey Raz, you are correct and it is so much fun to drive, thanks again

Hi Mark, Happy to share the sounds from this car with you :-) Lou
Your best video ever!
High praise.
I don’t remember many F-85’s from 1969. I’d guess that over 90% sold were Cutlass S’s or Cutlass Supremes or 442’s which were the higher priced trims.
Hi OldRustySteele, Well with very few produced, I'm happy to share this one with you :-) Lou
In 1969 442's were not a "trim" but a separate model with a VIN beginning with 344. This was true from 1968-1971.
Hi Vincent, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Parents car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Usually these W31 F85s have manual brakes and steering .
Definitely doesn't sound stock. Must have a 3/4 cam in it. 😎
......I'm not sure if it's stock, however I know it sounds GREAT :-)
They came with the 308° 474 lift camshaft , yes a bit choppy in the 350 .
A Needle in a Haystack!
I agree.
Nice 😊
Hi Michael, Happy to read this one is "Nice" :-) Lou
Is the 350 Ram Rod engine a solid lifter engine? It sounded like it when he started it with the hood open.
Hi Stacy, Hmmm, I'm not sure. Hoping a Viewer can share knowledge. Lou
It has hydraulic lifters.

Hi LoveIsAll, Happy to read your comment and share this "interesting example" with you :-) Lou

Did he say he worked for Oldsmobile has a Salesman for 10 years because I was a GM mechanic I was the manager for Pontiac and Oldsmobile dealership
Happy to read you were able to work on these great cars.

I’m not an olds man…is that the stripped down model with the big engine? 350 is a big block…

Hi John, Usually you'll pay for something what you think it's worth, Lou
Hey John, Really that's your opinion you get what you pay for, did you see this in person? if you have you would not have made that statement

Hi cuda426hemi, ....and there you go. Thanks for viewing and sharing, Lou
