Yeah this movie is a classic. Love the 80s vibes! Did you know there was a real incident back in the late-70s I think. It was in Russia. They had a new system to detect inbound nukes and a human had to be at the controls to launch theirs back. One day it was a new guy fresh out of training who was just watching the screens for an hour or two. He got a launch detection but it didnt seem right for some reason. He called his superiors and they said its his call and to make it quick. He decided to wait for another minute. Suddenly the screen cleared and it was revealed the "inbounds" were actually clouds reflecting sunlight. Good thing the new guy wasnt all gung-ho. We would not be here today. You can Google all this. You cant make this stuff up.
I grew up in the 80s under the threat of nuclear war and now it's here again. Nothing changes.

This is one of my favorite movies from my childhood. My brother was WAY into computers when he was young and unfortunately did learn a few things from this movie. I heard it so many times because he used a tape recorder to record it when it was on TV before owned VCR. My husband worked a factory job at a tannery cutting leather for years with no A/C. Luckily he didn't do it that long. They sent the jobs overseas and then tried to trick people out of unemployment by paying them a "settlement" of only $300. They even made a Wargames reference in season 4 of Stranger Things.
There are pluses and minuses to computer controlled versus human controlled missiles-But of I understood it right, even before putting the WOPR Computer in charge, the man operated missiles still had computers somewhere in the chain.
Missile launch controllers are generally on duty in 24 hour shifts.

Fun Fact: The film is still a favorite in Silicon Valley. Google held a 25th anniversary screening in 2008.
Historical Fact: This movie inspired Congress to create the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1984. Democrat Rep. Dan Glickman (KS-04) opened the committee meetings by showing the movie.
What Script Fact: According to John Badham, the jeep trying to crash through the gate at NORAD and turning over was an actual accident. The jeep was supposed to continue through the gate. They added the scene of the characters running from the jeep and down the tunnel and used the botched jeep stunt.
Computer Enthusiast Fact: The computer in David's room is an IMSAI 8080. According to the person who supplied the computer, Matthew Broderick saved a shooting day by figuring out a programming sequence for the keyboard on his own after instructions were lost. It could do everything shown in the movie (see: Historical Fact). The movie includes the first cinematic reference to a "firewall" concept, a security measure used in computer networking and Internet security.
Location Location Fact: The NORAD command center built for the movie cost $1 Million, making it the most expensive set ever constructed at the time. The producers were not allowed into the actual NORAD command center, so they had to imagine what it was like. In the DVD commentary, director John Badham notes that the actual NORAD command center isn't nearly as elaborate as the one in the movie. The tunnel and exterior used for the entrance into NORAD is located in Griffith Park, Los Angeles, California. The same tunnel was used to enter and exit Toontown in Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), and in the climax of Back To The Future Part II (1989).

When you turn the keys, you launch 10 missiles. All armed with atomic warheads aimed at Russia (at that time). The launch commander refused to obey the launch order.

No, they have it right.. They are talking at he says it should be at 5, but it's at 4 because of the stunt he pulled, and if they hadnt caught it, it could have gone to 1... and you know what 1 means? WW3..
One of my favorite movies. So very 80s. And in fact someone has hacked the pentagon tho it was invited by the pentagon, to figure out how they'd do it probably. And point of fact, they'd probably offer David a job after graduating school in this movie! Lol Also just to know we're seldom at defcon 5, we're usually at defcon 4. Right now however thanks to russia, we're currently at defcon 3.

Hello there! Great reaction!!! I have loved this movie as long as I can remember. I was 9 when it came out and my family and I used to watch it all the time! Although, our 1# Matthew Broderick is Ferris Bueller's Day Off! My brother IS Ferris Bueller... and Will Smith's character Alex in the movie Hitch!!! LOL
I was the same age when this came out. As this was during the tail end of the cold war, I still recall it did touch a few nerves as we lived in an area that would most likely be a target. Great cast and a timeless movie. One scary thing - there was an incident a few years prior that somehow a simulation made it into a "live" computer system where things got pretty close to starting WWIII. Look up the 1979 Norad incident. Russia had their share of close calls as well.
Our missiles are still controlled by the same technology as in this movie; a good no really knows programming codes that old to break into it bad because it would be very costly to upgrade.
Also because the old computers are run on a closed system, so you can only hack them if you managed to get into the silo facility.

I forgot only a fifth of those chosen to turn the key refused to do so. That’s WAY too low considering it was offing *20 million people* and probably many more in the aftermath and retaliation lol. Also probably a fairly realistic percentage. The issue for me with AI is as always the humans. People here wanted to use AI simply to give the powers that be more control. Because they were apparently willing to off tens of millions.
In the end, the AI was far more reasonable and adaptable than humans. It actually learned to not be a totally destructive monster in a few minutes as opposed to humans who still haven’t learned lol.
Also reading future predictions made in like 1899 lol made me sad about how we’ve used technology. (Though we’ve done it this way before then as well!) Instead of new technology making things better for everyone, it’s feared because it takes away jobs! It can also of course make services and products worse and far sloppier, but apart from that, if the tech replaces jobs, at least SOME of it should not stay at the top!! People envisioned a world where we were able to have more free time, not less.
I am Gen X and the one phrase that every Gen X'er knows is MAD which stands for Mutually Assured Destruction. To my generation and the Boomers, the threat of nuclear war was real. Something the younger generations have no knowledge of which is a good thing. I remember when I was in grade school, we practiced hiding under our desks in case of a nuclear war and my school had a bomb shelter. I think you can still find bomb shelters in old abandoned schools. I was 15 when this came out and there was a lot of talk about nuclear proliferation and nuclear disarmament. Luckily, it never came to nuclear war but there were some very tense times and the threat of nuclear war didn't really start to alleviate until the fall of the USSR.
You mean the perception of the threat of nuclear war. It was all fear mongering on the part of ultra nationalists, particularly under Reagan in the 80s.

#4 depends on the pull-tab. You are correct with aluminium and non-conductive pull tabs, but you could with a steel pull tab, which a few tins still used in the 70s and early 80s.
