That one at the time was probably about five years old. It is long gone, but it lives on in cuttings. I have to say though that I don't seem to be able to grow imperialis nearly as well as I could at one time. Always appreciated what you have as it does not always last!
This plant has lived on through cuttings and has been spread around quite widely. I still have it although it is a much smaller and less impressive version of itself. It is currently flowering and the blooms smell of sweet mint to me.

Yes, I am glad that I made the video to remember it by, because I sure can't grow imperialis like that any more. It is weird why some plants that used to do amazing for me, I can barely keep alive any longer.
Omgosh!!! 👀😳. I just bought an Imperialis Red and will be receiving it this week. She’s already about a foot and half tall. I did not realize this particular Hoya grows so fast and so massive. Any tips besides keep it trimmed back constantly? 🤣🤣🤣 Beautiful huge blooms too. Just wow. I’m so excited now 😁
No real tips other than enjoy your plant, and unless you have a greenhouse, or live in Florida it is unlikely that you will have to worry about a plant that gets as big as mine did when I had the conditions for it. Have fun with your imperialis!
@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas thank you!!! I am so excited I dream about Hoyas almost every night. I know that’s insane but I think it’s because I look at and read a lot of Hoya content daily. 🤣 I live in SE GA so similar conditions but cooler winters. I appreciate you replying.💚
You've done astonishing work with your hoyas. I have two of these that have been flourishing in the New Orleans summer. However, each winter they struggle and lose leaves. I bring them inside out of the cold, but they suffer in any case. Do you have a video on winter care for this species? Any tips or information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.
This species thrives in the heat and humidity. If you want them to show no stress when bringing them inside; they will need to live in a grow tent with a led lighting system. I'm afraid it is the only way. Some of these imperialis clones are more susceptible to set backs than others.
@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas Thank you Doug. If that is the case, then that is what I will do. Some last tips though, please. Do you have any recommendations for grow tent and lighting? specifications/brands? I appreciate your time and expertise, thank you again. Aaron

Thank you for replying - the plant is an incredible presence, and the flowers, even the peduncles, are sublime - mint sweet would be a treat. Is it nocturnally fragrant? The rather common Hoya Australis which cohabits with me is the size of a bass viol, from a branch to this monster in 9 years, and it is strangling its trellis. Love her!😎
Hi Doug I’m a new lover of Hoyas as I just discover them. I do have a marble queen and a carnosa I would like to get some cutting from you please let me know if that is possible. Thank you
Hoya imperialis is a plant that can struggle a bit to get going. First make sure it has no pest issues as like scale or root mealies as it is prone to these. This is a plant that needs to be very warm and humid when it is starting out, and then you can acclimate it to regular household conditions. When it is happy, it can grow very quickly and is hard to trellis as the vines are so stiff.

@@asupremum1246 It is not really an option any more. My plant came in a group order from Carol Noel in Hawaii 7 or 8 years ago. Send me an email at dougchamberlain61@gmail.com if you want to be notified.
Where can I buy these Hoya Imperialis? I am going to florida this Spring break for a vacation. Can i get it from there? Do you know any stores that sell these type flowers.
There are no real stores that will carry Hoya imperialis. You might get lucky and find one in a Florida nursery. Most people buy them mail order. I will have some for sale on eBay starting in mid-April if you are interested.
The scent is very minty and there was no real special fertilizer. I just used Jacks 20.20.20. Sadly, I no longer have the conditions to grow imperialis that are nearly as nice.
@Doug I would be very interested know purchasing a cutting of this plant. it is just spectacular!! is there any way you could provide a link to your online shop? thanks in advance.
Edi, I don't have an online shop. I only sell plants sporadically on ebay for a few months in the summer. This summer I am not planning on selling much as I am going to be too busy. Last year I sold a lot of this imperialis, but I don't have any for this year. Next summer (2018) I should have a lot to sell.
It is erbtarzan24. I don't really care for the name now, but once you have one you kind of have to stick with it. I was a big Tarzan fan as a kid and Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote 24 Tarzan books; so that is where the ebay id came from.
I used a 10 inch pot and 5 foot bamboo hoops to trellis it. I have not been able to find the 5 foot hoops now for years; I don’t think they are made anymore.
Really hoping to start growing imperialis one day. Love you channel so much. I never realized that this channel is the same as Vermont hoyas until this video. Any tips on buying imperialis?
Hi Frankie, you want to look for H. imperialis Rauschii. Many imperialis are very hard to flower, and can take up to seven years to bloom. My particular seedling flowers very early - I have flowered it in as little as 14 months. I sold a total of 45 rooted cuttings of my plant this year, but just sold the last two this week. I will have more to sell in the spring of 2019; I know that is a long time to wait, so keep your eyes on eBay and maybe one will show up there. I'm glad that you have enjoyed my channel, and thanks for leaving the nice comment!
not sure you'll see this but I have a problem with my young imperialis, can't find much information on deficiencies for this species and I've been going nuts. Young leaves are much thinner than the others and the veins are protruding a bit with a hint of chlorosis in between. It's been growing like crazy nevertheless and the leaves are big and nice except for their 'thinness' and lighter coloring. One of my plants' leaves are all thin and veiny, minus the chlorosis...unsure what to do with it
You can try to add ground Oyster shell to your mix to see if that helps. I know how frustrating it is to have a Hoya that is chlorotic. I have recently had this issue with Hoya phyllura, and I grew it twice in two different medias and had the same results. I tried different growing conditions and fertilizers and nothing helped. I just threw it out this week. I have never had this issue with imperialis except for the occasional leaf that would turn yellow and fall off. There are some clones however that are much more difficult and fussy than others. I am fortunate to have a couple of strong clones that grow well, but I have tried a couple that were not good at all.
@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas Huge thanks for the reply. I will try your advice :) Mostly it's the protruding veins that bug me, it looks like a dried out plant but it isn't... I'm also thinking a lot of sun could've made the leaves brighter? Like carnosa's leaves turn pretty dull in direct sun. But then again the other one is almost never in direct sunlight and it's leaves are pretty light as well, plus the stems aren't stiff and thick like you see on imperialis usually, so maybe it won't become much of these two :/ I shall continue to experiment, who knows. Thanks again :)
First there is nothing that you are doing wrong, and you should be happy that you have done well enough to get it to the bud stage. The imperialis that you see in this video is a one of a kind plant that is exceptionally vigorous and never drops its buds, but most imperialis drop there buds for a long time, before they get old enough to carry them to term. I have experienced this phenomena myself with other imperialis that I have grown. The only thing I can tell you to try is to scratch a little crushed oyster shell into the top of the mix to see if that helps your bud drop.
I'm sorry; I don't currently have this Hoya for sale. Keep checking Ebay, as it frequently comes up for sale there. I don't have as many Hoyas as you would think. I probably have less than 100 species, because I don't have that much good growing space, I frequently have to get rid of plants to move new ones in.
The plant currently has only one active growing tip; I need it to grow, and I can't take a cutting without cutting that tip off. So if there is going to be more of it in the future, I can't take cuttings now.
@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas Binge watching all your videos. I'm wondering will you be offering this Imperialis cutting and if so please let me know what I would need to do to obtain it and how much it would cost...Please 🙏
@@niceleedone Probably in about six weeks I will take some cuttings; I've been selling everything on eBay under the name erbtarzan24. I have not thought about pricing yet, but probably will sell unrooted for around $40 shipped. Don't hold me to it though.
Hi Doug! I just found your channel, so I’m still watching videos to catch up. My Mom loves Hoyas, and I’m looking to get one in the future. Do you ever sell cuttings of your plants? I think the Imperialis is probably my favorite (which is how I came across this video)
I just took 4 cuttings of this one that I am trying to root. I usually sell on eBay under erbtarzan24 when I have plants to sell. You can send me an email at dougchamberlain61@gmail.com in about a month and I will let you know if they are ready to sell.
Estoy agotado de esta planta por un año. Puede seguir buscando en eBay, ya que con frecuencia aparecerá allí. Si no, siempre puede encontrarlo con los vendedores de Tailandia.
I believe the reason for the small volume of soil is because in nature many Hoyas are partially or totally epiphytic and can live on trees without even touching the ground.
WHO got this plant Doug when you moved??? You must have sold it for a HUGE sum...how much did you get for it, i have got to know...can i be that nosy? Everyone is right. There is something in the DNA of THAT plant ,that is making it grow just fantastically. Since I assume you are long out of cuttings. Where did you get it from ,if you recall? And who got it when you moved? I have now bought 3 Imperialis, and they all look like crap,to be blunt. I am in south Fla. Ihave the sun, the heat, the humidity, and I cant get any to grow, live, let alone bloom! THAT plant has some DNA in it that makes it VERY special. I have many large bloomers, in bloom right now, but Imperialis is just not working for me, and I mUST grow this hoya. PLEASE...if you recall where you got it from, I would like to try buying it from the grower, unless it is from Thailand. Since I assume you are long out of cuts...I can at least TRY and get one like that, from where you got it from, and hope for the same SUPER growth. That is just unreal,in Vermont! Wow!.
Hi Marc, I hate to tell you this, but I gave that huge plant away for free. Somewhere I have a photo of the new owners taking it out the door. The woman that I gave it to, no longer keeps houseplants and gave it away when she became a "snowbird". I was moving at the time and had no time to deal with cutting it up and selling it, and I wasn't selling plants at the time anyway. I got this plant as a seedling, meaning that Carol Noel got the seed in Sabah (I think) brought it back to Hawaii and planted all of the seed. I happened to get the only one out of this batch of seeds that amounted to anything. This plant is truly a one in a thousand. In the last two years I sold around 25 rooted cuttings for $27.95 each which included the shipping. This year I probably won't have any to sell, but but in 2018 if I'm still in the hobby, I should have a lot to sell once again. There is a fair amount of my cuttings out there now, so other people may end up having some to sell, as well. If you join the Houz Gardenweb Hoya group, you could ask Aurora if she has any to sell. She has bought the plant from me, and may have some to sell.
bummer:( man i would have paid for shipping and your time to get that plant! Even if only half of it lived in shipping, hell...what a plant! Wow..what a waste to go to a person that didnt even keep it. She should be shot! yuo EVER have something like that to 'throw out' for some reason let me know, i want it! Ill get it somehow. Take care.
I wished we are neighbours for will take care of it for you. Hope and pray you could take it with you. For as plant garden lover. I say where you fav f,over is..there your heart is..
When conditions are to its liking, this one grows very quickly. You might want to pull it out of its pot and check for root rot, and perhaps start it over:(
This imperialis does not grow nearly as well for me as it did when this video was filmed. My conditions are different now so that t I have had very little of this plant to share over the past couple of years.
I'm sorry, but I have no idea how to put subtitles into a video, or how that would work. There are so many different languages, I couldn't just have Italian subtitles, as I have many people have requested Spanish subtitles. It is beyond my capabilities.
Sorry for the late reply, but just saw your comment. While I have sold lots of imperialis in the past, my plants don't grow as vigorously as in the past so there is no imperialis for sale in 2023, possibly next year.
If you get really lucky, you can use a greenhouse for about 5 months in Vermont; then it gets far too cold to use a greenhouse such as mine. That is why it can't be allowed to just stay there as it will be certain death.

Hi Chim, Unfortunately you are asking the wrong person to help you with your Hoya shepherdii. I have killed that plant so many times that I have given up trying to grow it. The plant grows well for me outside in the greenhouse over the summer, but when I bring it inside it always dies over the winter. I have tried everything and fail every time. Your plant looks beautiful and I hope you don't lose it. I have a friend who lived in a dry climate such as yours and told me that shepherdii really needs a lot of humidity in order to do well, and without it the plant goes downhill very quickly. Thanks for comment on the music; that rarely happens!
A remarkable beauty...so heart breaking to leave it behind
It was difficult, but she lives on through cuttings and happens to be flowering right now. Not nearly so big, but still nice.
Hahaha That’s a monster Doug! The flowers are amazing ❤️❤️❤️ such great memory
Yes, I am glad that I made the video to remember it by, because I sure can't grow imperialis like that any more. It is weird why some plants that used to do amazing for me, I can barely keep alive any longer.
What do you do with those ? If you don’t mind me asking 😜
Gorgeous flowers😍😍😍
Thank you!!
Did you show a pic of the flower ?
Omgosh!!!
@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas
Thank you Doug. If that is the case, then that is what I will do. Some last tips though, please. Do you have any recommendations for grow tent and lighting? specifications/brands? I appreciate your time and expertise, thank you again. Aaron

Fabulous creature! Are the flowers fragrant?🤗
I would describe the scent as a minty sweetness; it is unique among Hoya species.
Love her!😎
@@pchabanowich Hi Peter, yes it is nocturnally fragrant. Your Hoya Australis must be a site to behold. All the best, Doug

@@sketch6774 I will do my best!
She sure loved where she was living.
Hi how do you take care of this beauty? I have oneabd it's been a struggle please help
If it is cold and you don't have grow tents to work with like I do, you better keep it on the dry side or root rot will be an issue.
Wooouuuuu EXTREMADAMENTE 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Thank you Isabella!

Oh man. I so need this plant for my yard here in South Florida. I have a massive tree it could climb up.
Yes, I'm sure it would love a tree like that to climb up. It would probably grow 30 feet in a year with that kind of climate!

What have you been feeding this beautiful beast of a Hoya? 😲😳
Also, how was its scent?
The scent is very minty and there was no real special fertilizer. I just used Jacks 20.20.20. Sadly, I no longer have the conditions to grow imperialis that are nearly as nice.
@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas New adventures await. 😉
Doug Chamberlain thanks for your response!! what is your seller name on ebay so I can follow you.
It is erbtarzan24. I don't really care for the name now, but once you have one you kind of have to stick with it. I was a big Tarzan fan as a kid and Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote 24 Tarzan books; so that is where the ebay id came from.
Doug Chamberlain thanks!! I'll look for you, have a blessed day.
What pot size and plant stake height do you use in this video?
I used a 10 inch pot and 5 foot bamboo hoops to trellis it. I have not been able to find the 5 foot hoops now for years; I don’t think they are made anymore.
@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas thank u so much! I probably will DIY myself a plant tower with tomato stakes.
My buds are falling down before they bloom, are there any tips? thankyou
Doug Chamberlain thankyou

Do you have this Hoya Imperialis for sale. How many types of Hoyas do you have. Where can buy it?
I'm sorry; I don't currently have this Hoya for sale. Keep checking Ebay, as it frequently comes up for sale there. I don't have as many Hoyas as you would think. I probably have less than 100 species, because I don't have that much good growing space, I frequently have to get rid of plants to move new ones in.
Can you at least send little portion from your hoya?
The plant currently has only one active growing tip; I need it to grow, and I can't take a cutting without cutting that tip off. So if there is going to be more of it in the future, I can't take cuttings now.
Aww.. i wish you still have the cuttings available for this plant :)

This shows up fairly frequently on eBay. It travels well so you can find these from all of the Thai vendors for a reasonable price.
Thank you very much
Hi Doug! I just found your channel, so I’m still watching videos to catch up. My Mom loves Hoyas, and I’m looking to get one in the future. Do you ever sell cuttings of your plants? I think the Imperialis is probably my favorite (which is how I came across this video)

Dónde puedo conseguir esa Hoya
Estoy agotado de esta planta por un año. Puede seguir buscando en eBay, ya que con frecuencia aparecerá allí. Si no, siempre puede encontrarlo con los vendedores de Tailandia.
Doug, why, in your opinion, massive plants like this your hoya imperialis, can thrive in such a small volume of soil??
Take care.

When conditions are to its liking, this one grows very quickly. You might want to pull it out of its pot and check for root rot, and perhaps start it over:(
Easy to grow but difficult to bloom i don't know what happen with mine

Hi Chim, Unfortunately you are asking the wrong person to help you with your Hoya shepherdii. I have killed that plant so many times that I have given up trying to grow it. The plant grows well for me outside in the greenhouse over the summer, but when I bring it inside it always dies over the winter. I have tried everything and fail every time. Your plant looks beautiful and I hope you don't lose it. I have a friend who lived in a dry climate such as yours and told me that shepherdii really needs a lot of humidity in order to do well, and without it the plant goes downhill very quickly. Wish I could be of more help!
