I have a hoya carnosa that I inherited when my grandmother died in 1975. I repotted it then and it has been in the same pot ever since and has survived even through multiple moves. I have taken countless starts for family members and friends. I think I need to repot it now because it's not growing as well as it has in the past even though the plant still looks good. Thank you for the information.
Thank you for yet another great video, Byron. I have a Hoya australis, that I have had for 20 years. I have had no pests on it at all, and the fragrance of the flowers are intoxicating. It reminds me of Magnolias :D
I have a twelve year old Hoya that is planted in a six inch, self watering, ceramic pot and it blooms all year. It sits in an east facing window in a room that stays 70° all year, and I only water it about every three to four months. They truly are no maintenance and virtually indestructible.
I grew one of these hoyas. We had a heavy hook screwed into the ceiling joist for the plant to hang on. The plant became so heavy it pulled the hook out of the ceiling joist one night, we got up to see the plant lying on the carpet in the living room.
What I found most beneficial about this video is showing the growth habit of hoya (vining up or shrub-like). Also showing what a mature specimen looks like also helps the plant-owner know how to treat and grow their hoya in the home. Now that I've see this, I will be planting my Variegated Hoya Kerii outdoors, at the base of my conifer trees. I think they'll make a remarkable statement in the garden when they drape a curtain of their heart-shaped, variegated leaves across the scape. I live in Los Angeles, far from hoya's native range, I'm curious to see what, if any, pollinators partake in the flowers. Anyone else allowing hoya to grow outdoors?
I was reading his fertilizer advice in the comments and it was so informative. I assumed I was good using “miracle gro orchid food”. He recommended a 7-9-5 NPK for Hoya.. I was waaay off because it is a 30-10-10
I have a Hoya pubicalyx that shot out a vine. When I tried to trellis it, the end of the vine dried up. I un-trellised it and it is just resting on the table. Can I just cut that tip off? The vine is about 18" long.
Hoyas are the hardest plant for me to grow. I've killed so many of them and I just can crack the code with these plants. Calatheas, notorious divas, thrive for me. I just want to see a hoya flower for me :(.
Does a hoya always need to tied up to grow ? I just pruned mine back a little it's growing crazy and istill have very long stems hanging on the floor . What do you recommend ? Thank You.
You can stake them and tie the vines to the stake to help contain them. We often grow them in hanging baskets and take the vining leads and wrap them around the pot. This will keep them in in one spot for a while.
Hi i like more such . Excellent info sharing video !! I haveva Q i feed Osmokot. Do i feed calmag or seaweed too ? Or just only osmokot is good enough as fertilising Hoyas ?
Thanks for this video. Please give the name of the hoya you said that you'd had for about 2 years (at the time of this video). It's such a great looking hoya and the blooms are very special. Thank you.
Back in the 70s, I had an old friend who had a hoya that the fragrance was so sweet and strong I have never forgotten it and have wanted to get one recently. I don't know the name of it though. It is a very strong sweet fragrance and the leaves, if memory serves me, were a thick sorta bent shape. That was a long time ago so I don't recall exactly the leaf shape but that fragrance has never left my memory. Does anyone have a guess as to which one that was?
I created a cutting off my hoya and it was doing fine until the growing tip got smooshed. It still looks lovely and green but it has stopped growing. Anything I can do to get this one going again?
Hello! Has the plant been fertilized at all? If so, what NPK value is the fertilizer and how often is it applied? How many hours of sunlight per day does the plant receive?
Have a Hoya lacunosa for about almost 3 weeks. The leaves are slowly turning yellow and falling off. They have good sunlight and not direct. Not sure if I’m over watering or under watering?! I did put a growing mix in the water could that be affecting it ?
Thank you for this video. Very informative! I bought a small Hoya Carnosa Tricolor three summers ago. It had two branches, one small and the other a little longer. I never heard of a Hoya before, but I thought it was very unusual. The plant has really grown. I keep getting more and more new branches and leaves. My question to you is, why doesn't it blume? Any suggestions would be great. Thank you! Gerry 😁
How long have you had the plant? Has it been pruned at all? Are you using a fertilizer on it? If so, what is the NPK value on the fertilizer and how often is it being applied?
I have had my Hoya CT for three years. It was a very small plant with 2 trailing branches. It now has 4 branches and have gotten pretty long. The one branch has grown about 2 feet in the last month. I fertilize it with Miracle Grow Indoor Plant Fertilizer. I fertilize my plants 1 a month in the Spring and Summer. Thank you for your reply. Gerry ☺
It looks like the NPK value on that fertilizer is 12-4-8. This fertilizer has a lot of nitrogen in it which is great for growing green leafy growth, however, with that middle number being so low, you'll probably never see any blooms on the plant. Try swapping to a blooming fertilizer like a 7-9-5 NPK instead. If you are unable to find a 7-9-5 fertilizer, any blooming fertilizer with an NPK value below 15-15-15 with the middle number being the highest of the three, but still below 15 would be a great option!
My co-worker before she left for Turkey, she gave me a branch of Hoya,I plant it ,it grower well, now just stop and never bloom. What can I do,I put it near the window then bring it outside for summer....I am So disappointed. Please help!
Check and see if the roots are healthy if it's not growing during the summer. Flowering on hoyas is related to the growth it makes in the summer and the temperature it is grown at during the winter. Different species have different needs. First though you need to get the plant growing.
My blessed mother gave me her Hoya over 15 years ago. It has always been so healthy. However, my mother died in my arms a few years ago. Now, my Hoya is dying. The leaves and the stem/vine are all drying up. What can I do? I have it in a Southwest facing window. I live in Canada. This is the first summer it has not flowered. However, most of the vine and the leaves have all dried up and the vine part snaps like a dried up twig. Could somebody please help me. Thank you so much it’s breaking my heart.
LogeesPlants Hi, I just did what you asked me to do and unfortunately no, the stem is dry and breaks up into little wheat coloured flowers. I know you asked me to do that because if there is green there it indicates that the plan to still alive. I am an avid gardener and had to take botany in University. Most of my Hoya 3/4 of it is all dead. I have only one stem that is kind of green. Just wondering if I should try and root it. What are your thoughts? I am so sad. Thank you. Susan
So sorry to hear this. You can certainly try to reroot the one stem that is still green. Place it in a glass of distilled water until roots form and then repot. Good luck!
@@LogeesPlants Hi quite something on one side it can stay without water for days and on the other side one can reroot just by placing it in distilled water.

Thanks so much for the information. I just got a nice haul from a fellow UA-camR and I am loving my Hoya haul. Happy growing.

Should I sprinkle some worm
Casting compost on the top soil of my hoyas?
My Variegated hoya tend to revert to normal leaves. How can I promote the varigation?

I haveva Q

We generally suggest the use of a fertilizer which is below a 15-15-15. As hoyas are such slow growers, they don't really need much fertilizing.
I love your videos
My Hoyas is about thirty years old and blooms a purple and white flower! They both drop a sticky substance. Why?
No signs of pests? If not, could just be the natural sugars excreting from the plant.
Congratulations! 30 Years it is not a joke.
Congrats..30 years ..amazing bonding between you two.
Do you know if hoyas are safe with cats in the house?
Thanks for this video. Please give the name of the hoya you said that you'd had for about 2 years (at the time of this video). It's such a great looking hoya and the blooms are very special. Thank you.

bent shape, possibly a compacta? or krinkle 8 maybe Chelsea
Hi. I would like to know if it's good for hoyas to use terracota pots. Best regards
Absolutely!
Thank you!
what kind of fertilizer I need for Hoya plant
Any balanced fertilizer will work. A 7-9-5 or a formula with a similar ratio will do just fine. Just have the numbers fairly even.
Thank you! 🌞
I love it.
I created a cutting off my hoya and it was doing fine until the growing tip got smooshed. It still looks lovely and green but it has stopped growing. Anything I can do to get this one going again?
A long as there is a growing eye somewhere at a leave axis it will re-sprout. Just takes time.
Well, now I know I don't have to handle mine with kid gloves...😧
What soil mix would you recommend for repotting a Hoya plant?
Not fussy. Any potting mix will do.
I can't get mine to bloom...ive had it for over 10 years. it's bloomed once and then the blooms dried up and fell off.

Wax plant it have stars flowers.
Super Helpful.. I think it is pronounced "Hoyas" not "Hoyers"
that's his accent. if you watch the other videos, it's just the way he talks. he says begonia as begonyur.

If you scratch the base of the stem of the plant, just above the soil line, with your finger nail, is there any green underneath?
