How I Bought my FIRST Dirt Bike! (Featuring my 1983 Kawasaki KX 125)

  • We’re going over my 1983 Kawasaki KX 125 in this video. This bike is really special to me since my first bike was a 1982 KX 80 with the same rear fender and body style. This body style is a bit of an acquired taste, most people who love the style of this bike have sentimental value with it, whether it’s having one when they were younger or for other reasons.
    I got this bike from a motocross collector friend of mine, Mike, who kept it in pristine condition. These 1982 and 1983 bikes have become extremely hard to find and, like with all bikes, prices rise with condition. My favorite things about this specific motocross bike is the gold swingarm and rims. The colors match so well with he Kawasaki green. Before I got my first dirt bike, I worked after school and on weekends delivering newspapers. My parents weren’t well off enough to buy me a $1,280 dirt bike at the time and were not fans of me getting a bike. But my parents said if I saved my own money I could purchase one. I was twelve years old when I bought a 1982 KX 80 out of the showroom for $1,283.

    We’ll be doing full feature videos on my 1999 Kawasaki KX 500 and my 1989 Kawasaki KX 250 Jeff Ward tribute build. I will go through how those bikes were built and why I love them each so much. Make sure you’re subscribed to the channel so you don’t miss those ones!

    You had the KX80D2... I had the 84 KX80F2.. The 1st model with a disc brake. I loved that bike so much ! Jumping off my 78 YZ80E was such a huge difference.
    Going by how little bikes change these days, it's hard to believe that there was a 6 year time difference between the 2. I love your 83 KX125 .. Such a rare beast of a bike. I have an 83 CR125RD that l just got the frame back from the powder coaters. I'm having trouble locating the water pump side case as most are rotted out.. 😢

    Beautiful bike and story behind it 👍 Love those late 80’s early 90’s KX’s you got back there too!!! Those are my absolute favorite! How awesome would it be to create a showroom (museum) of your favorite year and manufacture. Like walking into a Kawasaki or Honda dealership in 88 or 93 and seeing everything as it was on display back then. From the 50cc to the 500’s to the Jet skis and the sStreet bikes. What year and brand would you pic?

    I have a stock 83 vented number plate. I didn't use it because it's showing its age. You are welcome to copy it if you would like to recreate it for your bike.
    I race my KX. I have a Noleen Shock, 84 cylinder and bunch of other stuff done to it. I am in the process of rebuilding it as it was stolen and trashed. But it will be better than before when I'm done

    Hey Charlie is that just SC1 used to get the bike so shiny or do you use a different product

    • @CharlieFerer
      @CharlieFerer  2 роки тому +1

      I use the SC1 on the tires and that is about it. My bikes that are in the collection are all polished and waxed. My bikes I ride I use SC1 a lot even before I hit the track so the dirt does not stick as easily under the fenders, etc.

      @@CharlieFerer oh okay cool I didn't know you could actually wax the plastic is it a special wax or just like can I use regular turtle Wax might be a stupid question but I've never put wax on my plastic before I'd like to try it I just got my Big bore kit put in my RMZ 250 and I have all new plastics and graphics and I would love to get them the shine you have on your collection thanks for responding God bless

    • @CharlieFerer
      @CharlieFerer  2 роки тому

      @@kylelangworthy9641 Yes, you can use any polish and wax. Then take a clean buffer pad and lightly buff them. The clean wool buffer pad does wonders just be sure not to put pressure because you can heat and damage the plastic fast.

    That was the first Dirt bike I ever bought. I bought it when my Parents went on vacation because they did not want me to have a dirt bike.. I blew the clutch basket out after 2 Days of riding. When my dad came Home and saw it he said (You're going to be sorry) I said I already am. I sold a shotgun to get enough money to buy a new clutch basket.

    That 250 tank is mint. When you go through it, can you tell us how you polished it? I have one as well but way more rough.

    • @CharlieFerer
      @CharlieFerer  2 роки тому +3

      Hi Seth! Tanks are a pain but if you have patience you can easily do it yourself. I start with 400 grit sandpaper. I do go to where I get any defects and plastic discoloration out. Then go to 600, then 800, then 1,000 then I go to an abrasive hand pad - onnamazon look for VSM 401255 abrasive hand pad 6”x9”, ultra fine, gray. Then I will use a heat gun but you really need to pay attention with it. Then a dry buffer. That is it. I do get this question asked a lot so we will probably do a video on this soon. And I could show what tools/material I use.

      @@CharlieFerer awesome! I’m a big visual learner! So that would help and probably a lot of other guys. Would be awesome to see the result afterwards. But I’ll start sanding it down. It’s just the polishing to get that good shine what looks to be the hardest part.

      And yet I love it just how I purchased it from my friend. You will see not all of my bikes are going back to original. I have a 1983 CR 250 and 500 that I would rather have blue fork boots on it than the black…so I installed the oem 1986 blue fork boots. Easy fix for the next owner if they wish to make original.
