Great pedal indeed. I use a Maxon DS9 - which is the same pedal - after a lightly cranked Boss Blues Driver, into a Fender HR Deville 212 ML. This combination gives me nearly everything I want. Important for me is keep the tone knob around 9 'o clock. A white Xotic RC Booster and a Boss EQ after the SD9 is my way for a greater sound, no modification needed.
The SD9 was my first pedal which I bought in 1985 along with my 1st guitar. I still have it today but it's mostly retired as Line 6 nailed it in the Helix.
First, great playing, man, liquid and pleasant, just wonderful. I have one I bought in 1986 and it still works! I love it! It is true about the tone control, don't go past 9 o'clock, unless you like ice picks in your ears!
It's volume responsive like an old fuzz at the front of the chain....and it's awesome as a boost into a duel rec.... Plus the highs can make the dogs howl...the way huge geisha drive that's being rereleased is a boutique version of the sonic distortion....thanks for the video i love your intro...
Nice sounding Distortion. Doing a YT search, I found that John did a video called "One of the BEST Drives in the Helix - Ibanez SD9 - Underrated for Four DECADES" in which he demos the Line 6 version called the "Hedgehog DS9." I'll have to give it a go on my HX Stomp. Thanks
Line 6 had it right nicknaming the SD9 "Hedgehog" as it definitely has spines - this is the pedal gives the doesn't-really-drive amps [Fender Twin, Jazz Chorus] not just a full on drive channel but a hot modded one, fun stuff.
Interesting. Don’t believe I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with an SD9. I admit that I am not a TS fan at all so perhaps I missed the boat on this one. Thanks as always and Cheers!
This and another clip I found of the Ibanez SD9, is what has inspired me to find an Original early 80s on on eBay this morning and the guy accepted my counter offer of £120 posted (he had it for £150 originally) Another one for the Pedal GAS collection 😂😅👌
I'm and SD9 user since way, way back. It has been a bit of a secret weapon for me, until now anyway. I'm starting to hate youtubers discovering my tools of the trade. Now people just think I'm following some trend. Another of my secret weapons: Bad Bob in the front and Digitech GSP 21PRO and Roland SDE1000 in the loop !!!
The standard pedals I feel are literally fine - I've got to the point where I question whether buying the 4x pricier "boutique" alternatives really make much sense? This goes for Tube Screamers, Blues Drivers, SD9 and so on?
I had the SD9M on my board a while and imo that can do all the stuff the boutique variations do and they’re much easier to come by Edit: I guess they aren’t in stores anymore but still not expensive used
John, I have an original Ibanez SD-9, and you're not kidding about the position of the tone knob. That part of the circuit should be fixed at that setting, and that knob should control something else, because it sounds hideous anywhere but right around 9:00.
I used one on my small board for years: Comp Timmy SD9 Volume Pedal CE-2 Delay The volume pedal was to compensate for keeping the SD9 at a max volume. Unity gain was out of the question in that situation so I had to compensate. I ended up axing the volume pedal, and lowering the SD9 volume control. Still sounds great. Tone control at 9:00. I liked the gain at 2:00 though the 10:00 you’ve got is great as well. Rarely play any of my glorious pedals, nowadays but won’t sell them. SD9 is a keeper for sure. Scott Henderson was really into it: ua-cam.com/video/hMDP4o9UJ-s/v-deo.htmlsi=7O5vLaN5uSu5mYog
Almost the same as my chain except TS9/808 boosting SD-9. Guess we’re all a bunch of Landau fanboys. I still think it sounds way thicker with output maxed and overall loudness controlled downstream via volume pedal or something else. Something in the mids is missing when volume pot is not fully open.
I’ve never played a real one but I use it as my main drive in the HX Effects. Matteo Mancuso also uses it known at the Hedgehog in the Helix. It’s a crunch machine! I’m using it for punk/George Lynch tone and it’s fantastic
Please do a, “ That Pedal Show “ appearance with mick and Dan 🙏🏼. I’d love to hear/ see that 👍🏻
Yessssss. That would be amazing.
Teach them.how to use modelers properly (including with amps and pedals)
Haha they are tone snobs... That will be a cool hang 😮🔥🤯

As long as Mick, Dan and John think it's good, I won't argue. Great sounds, a lot of depth and dimension. Great demo.
I used an SD-9 pushing my JCM 50w mv combo from '86. Still my go-to lead sound.

Mateo Mancuso uses the SD9 model with a Matchless amp model for his lead tone on his Helix.
Hey, thanks! I just tried it with the Matchstick Ch1, Drive at about 5. Great sound!
Nice Tone! Professional Sound!
Ah, that SD9. The bane of my life!!
However you use it, it always sounds great !!! One of my favorite.

My first pedal back in the 90's
Michael Landau and Scott Henderson secret weapons 😄 SD9
I just bought this pedal, sounded good. It didn't have enough output so I moved on to others. I bought it because of a interview with Scott Henderson.

It has nothing in common with TS, it’s a hard clipping, diodes-to-ground distortion.

After owning the Butter Machine and Analogman modded SD I'm happy with standard Maxon SD9. I tweak the mids with Boss GE-7.

The most important with pedals is.. tha amp😅
Thomas Dawson uses this, checkout Animal Situation. Also Scott Henderson's new album Karnevel! except he made his own mod of an sd9 called the sh9

Tone knob is modded? No harsh above 9 o clock
Can you mind telling us what you're using at the end of your chain ?
An amp? A modeler and FR speaker ?
We're a few to ask ourselves here...
Hello, i didn't understand which amp are you using, because i had this pedal and it didn't sound like this.
I used one on my small board for years:
Comp
Timmy
SD9
Volume Pedal
CE-2
Delay
The volume pedal was to compensate for keeping the SD9 at a max volume. Unity gain was out of the question in that situation so I had to compensate.

Sounds huge! Are you playing through and actual amp? Or through an HX preset?
Everybody asks the same question, and nobody knows.. me also🤪
hes playing through the hx stomp, using the eric leeds preset he’s mentioned in previous videos.
I’ve never played a real one but I use it as my main drive in the HX Effects. Matteo Mancuso also uses it known at the Hedgehog in the Helix. It’s a crunch machine! I’m using it for punk/George Lynch tone and it’s fantastic
You need a dummy coil in that strat. You might love it as much as I do.

Yeah but only just! Who piled up all the chairs behind the door so I couldn’t get in? I had to climb in through the toilet window!
Sounds noisy ... maybe a better fit with humbuckers? ...
You’re right, does sound noisy. Maybe it’s just the high-gain in proximity to his computer/filming setup?
Fellers! - Single coils with any kind of gain are gonna' be noisy.
