Listening to Nick Drake's music just breaks my heart and gives me such an incredible sense of melancholy but in a very peaceful way. This guy can touch your soul.
I'd never heard of Nick Drake before, I was just browsing through random music vids and there was a related video of "Things Behind the Sun" and I clicked it. I thought it was one of the more beautiful songs I'd heard, so I kept clicking related videos. I wanted to know more about this person so to Google it was, and there I learned about a very talented young man, judging by the songs I've listened to, more talented than at least 90% of today's "artists." How saddened I was to learn of
You are so right my man, those strings are what make this song something hauntingly special...it is never the case that the support guys get any recognition-and yet, and yet they make it happen
I love Nick's way and the grace in his voice, his loneliness. I never met him, but we would have been brothers, I just wish I could have talked to him, I would have loved him, just like we human beings should. You break my heart Nick.
my favourite nick drake song. so british in its weather references and concerns and how that effects your mood. i love when the violins come in,its like a clearing sky.
Your knowledge is inspiring, thank you. I'm glad to be alive, to hear the beautification of the sound, the total sound, the sound of Nick Drake, and how he plays guitar...thanks again!
Recorded live with the string section in a semi circle in front of him at Sound Techniques. What you hear is what was recorded on the 4 track. Unbelievable.
listen when he sings "betty prayed today for the sky to blow away" how the string section is played. i think it symbolizes wild wind and stormy weather approaching.
his untimely death... not surprised though; it seems like most of the really great musicians die young. Still I wished he (and Jimi, and Janice, and Otis; Hank, Patsy and Cass; Kurt, Jim and Bob; John, Elvis, and Freddie and so many more) had lived on to make more music... RIP Nick Drake; thank you for the beautiful melodies you left behind.
Like all great artists, the work of Nick Drake is elusive. Although there are several characters related to existing musical languages, the set of the form has no name except that of the author. What makes her so cruelly poignant songs is "detachment" of the song. With a capacity to place the phrases in the rhythmic beats that is incredible, Drake said, describing, confesses without any emphasis. Thus, by contrast, we have the optimum effect with a minimum total of the means
Oke sorry for my comment I read in Wikipedia only the words of river man is from Nick alone the music is composed with Harry Robinson and Robert Kirby, I didn't know that. Nice weekend for you
The song is unusual, it is written in a 5/4 time signature. Robert Kirby the string arranger who was on his very first job with this LP was perplexed and felt he needed some help, so the studio brought in another arranger Harry Robinson. He finessed the problem by ignoring the 5/4 and set the orchestration in a slower 4/4.
One thing I've always noticed is that whilst Nick has been recognized, what about Robison? What ever happened to him? Without a doubt, this wouldn't have been such a stand out track without his haunting strings. I mean come on! They slice straight through your flesh, & rattle your soul! What about the performers? Where are they now?
The irony is that the bloke who wrote that incredibly beautiful string arangement had a top ten UK hit with Hoots Mon There's a Moose Loose Aboot This Hoose.
Yes that has always bothered me. Even people today.. Adele, who didn't even write Skyfall, who had nothing to do with the manuscript, production, composition, who sings in a fake American accent.. gets full credit for the song! Yet the man who plays the violin has more talent, skill, & knowledge of his craft than possibly all the POP stars put together. I say it's high time we put a stop to this glamour, fame & celebrity posing era & bring back the perspicacious talents that Nick Drake had.
There were a couple of reasons why Robert Kirby didn't do the strings. One, he didn't feel up to it because it was his 1st arranging job and Riverman is a complex song. And two, Joe Boyd had some cash spare so they got Harry Robinson in because he was experienced. And a mighty fine job he made of it as well.
Are there two recordings of this song, one with children laughing/ talking in the background? i seem to remember it that way, or maybe a senior moment. Anyhow im sure the overall feel of this song is similar to the territory John Martyn was aiming at, ... thankfully
Actually that's only partly true. He had a great deal of input into the arrangements. I read an interview with Robert Kirby, who said that Nick rejected the original arrangements, insisted on them being more baroque. According to Robert, Nick wouldn't be pushed around.
Nick Drakes music gets better with age. This is one of the most beautifully written melancholy songs I have ever heard.
Listening to Nick Drake's music just breaks my heart and gives me such an incredible sense of melancholy but in a very peaceful way. This guy can touch your soul.

I hear this as a prayer by the river.
I always pour my heart out by the water.

Love it. The orchestration is hauntingly beautiful.
magnificent song....sheer beauty................
This is the only "video" of this song where the uploader doesn't try to do something stupid with the track, or the video. Thank you for that.
Your knowledge is inspiring, thank you. I'm glad to be alive, to hear the beautification of the sound, the total sound, the sound of Nick Drake, and how he plays guitar...thanks again!
Simply too intense.Thank you Nick.
Superbe musique 🎶
This music is sublime.
The tune is 100% Nick Drake. The string arrangement on Riverman was written by Harry Robinson. The rest of albums strings were done by Robert Kirby.
this song has so much potential to progress and go further as symphony
River man only knows to row... I asked him. song gives me chills every time.
Happy Birthday Nick Drake!
filled my ears with beauty, affected my emotion, now thats skill craft.

The minute they invent the time machine I'm going back to Sound Techniques studio and sitting in on this session.
Nicks first album 'Five Leaves Left' which included this song sold just 5000 copies during Nick's lifetime.
Its almost like him and the music are having a conversation.
5/4 has the most sensual flow... And this song is cosmic :)
simply wonderful
Hopelijk krijgt Nick van boven mee dat wij zijn muziek nu WEL weten te waarderen.
Rust in vrede, Nicl.
There's a documentary out there called "A Skin to Few". about Nick.
his untimely death... not surprised though; it seems like most of the really great musicians die young. NICK DRAKE IS A FUCKING GENIOUS OH GOD!
Nick's music is like alcohol being poured onto an open wound.
@dadgadable yes. in western Canada we just recently stopped living in teepees. ;D

I die a little each time I listen to this, but that's ok I love this masterpiece.

thanks wikipedia
I heard the name on occasion but had no idea -special
@thaispansani It's sort of a similar progression, but not really. I think it shares similar root notes.
What was going on when Cliff Richard was selling so much(music?) and so few appreciated the magic that was and is Nick Drake???
Perhaps my favorite song. I have no clue (do know the "river man" reference though). Oh well.
why cant it be the 70's again..
Are you still with us?
This song is so weird and i like it
always a genius is misunderstood during his life, and loved after death

Some people live long lives and leave nothing.
Some die young and leave a large imprint.
so sorry to hear that
the man sang in infra-red...

Nah it's perfect the way it is...If it's not broken etc.
Is it me or does this tune resemble Beck's, "Round The Bend"?
