for my 2 pennies worth - Mancuso is a freak of nature and I've been following his progress for a long time. So clean, smooth, fast etc and yet with 2 virtually unique right hand techniques in the electric guitar world. Whilst the admiration for his skills is everywhere, what I don't see is any degree of commercial output. Who can name an MM song?. I dont see thousands of kids on YT playing like him. The techniques are too far out of the norm. If you look at Guthrie Govan for example, then there are thousands of people posting covers of his songs every day. He plays on many peoples recordings. He plays with Hans Zimmer. He is a fully rounded musician.
Bonamassa is a fantastic musician, singer, songwriter who has been doing it for years, has made a huge fortune and probably the worlds premier guitar collection. He invited Mancuso and he has been talking about Matteo for 3 or 4 years. So he knew what he could do and wasnt 'afraid' to share a stage. MM is no competition for Joe. They are in different worlds. Do you really think that Matteo is going to be selling out large arenas and having dozens of hit albums. I for one just can't see that happening.

Someone had to pick up where Holdsworth left off

@@swiftusmaximus5651 I think a better comparison would be with Shawn Lane.
Holdsworth's music was complex, often dischordant and made up of his own ideas of scales. Vast majority (including me) just dont understand it. The only album I play regularly is Tony Williams 'Believe It'. Matteo's music is still pretty mainstream. Nobody plays like him, but his music is nothing new (so far).
For all his genius, Holdsworth sadly died almost penniless and largely unknown to the musical public at large.

@@swiftusmaximus5651 If your comparison with holdsworth is that they arw borh amazing technical players who wont have much commercial success then i'm agreeing with you.

So I do not get the whole Bonnamassa got his arse handed to him talk/mindset. Music is not a "competition" at their roots Mancuso and Bonnamassa are completely different players. That is like trying to say orange really kicks strawberry's arse. On some level, its nonsensical. Mancuso is a "virtuoso" kind of player. Older comparisons that fit that broadly innovative spot would be guys like Eric Johnson, Eddie VanHalen, and Joe Satriani. Of course Mancuso is different than the aforementioned players but the broader point is appropriate.
If you live in a large city that has decent music scene there are plenty of people who can really play. Ive yet to meet a pro who is great at every style from jazz, classical, blues, metal and country... I have met GREAT players at playing metal that absolutely BLOW at playing the blues. Far too many people shit on the blues because they think its easy to play and sound good at playing... as a PRO let me tell you right now, being a really, REALLY good blues guitar player is NOT EASY AT ALL...

I have been following Matteo Mancuso for a few years, I know practically all his videos, I follow his interviews and, consequently, I know his evolution and his experiences as reported by himself. Obviously, as an Italian I am particularly proud of it. However, I have been following Joe Bonamassa for many years, at least musically, whom I appreciate immensely both as a singer and as a guitarist. The genre he performs, a well-rhythmed and timeless rock-blues, always performed impeccably and by great professionals (and always well recorded, it must be said), represents a significant reference for my listening pleasure. Matteo is different, (luckily for us), not 'better', as Joe is talented and, perhaps not everyone knows, he achieved the highest academic qualifications in music by graduating from the Conservatory of his city. The results can be felt and amaze those of us who know a little about musical theory and practice (and have ears and hearts to listen). With his remarkable performance, Matteo honored and thanked Joe for the invitation and the opportunity offered, and certainly did not intend to exhibit his skills just to highlight an alleged superiority that does not exist. On the other hand, I appreciated Joe enormously when, not hiding expressions of appreciation, he blatantly called the audience to an ovation. Two great artists.

I remember Claudio Quartarone playing like this (right hand) many years ago. Congratulations to Matteo for his immense talent.

Not that I love Joe, but Mancuso’s style and shredd-y stuff is totally different. Mostly not to my taste.
