    The reason why Gus is impressed is because the first engineer he brought over and "interviewed' was (despite being smart) full of $#!+ saying that he could get it done lickedy split with no problems. • @Dunkelz
      @Dunkelz Місяць тому +8

      Only exception to this comparison is Gale knew much more about what he was getting involved with, he knew he was helping Gus make refined/high purity meth and testing meth samples of competitors. I don't think the show ever portrays Werner as knowing exactly who/what he is working for, as a lot of his behavior would make no sense if he had even the faintest idea.

    • @wlockuz4467
      @wlockuz4467 Місяць тому

    One thing I never understood about this scene was why Gus went to such lengths to keep the location of the worksite secret from the Germans only to tell Werner his real name. If Werner had survived and felt compelled to he could’ve easily done some research into Gus and found out he does most of his business dealings in Albuquerque, and Gus seems to own the laundry in his own name which wouldn’t be hard to find out if Werner wanted to. Just seemed out of character for a man that is exceedingly cautious to the point it is one of his defining character traits.

    • @uncleanexecution
      @uncleanexecution Місяць тому +3

      I think the point was that Gus had already made up his mind that this was his guy. All of the previous caution had been to avoid complications if he wasn't the guy, just like with the previous person. Once he was involved, Gus knew he could probably sus it out the location anyways, so he dropped the secrecy.

    • @jesusnthedaisychain

      @jesusnthedaisychain well it was also trust being a bigger issue. Not only did Warren escape, but iirc he was talking about project at a bar. Even if you put a ball and chain until the project is finished so he can't escape again, you can't let him go afterwards.

    According to Vince Gilligan, ultimately the project is given to German engineer Werner Ziegler after he conducts more thorough measurements of the facility and devises ways to support the existing structure and machinery working in complete secrecy underground, which the French engineer did not take into consideration and was willing to openly brag about his previous projects. Gus wanted someone meticulous, honest and pragmatic.

    I never understood how this could happen! Werner is portrayed as highly intelligent, very honest, he loves his wife and his men, and he’s just an all around respectable engineer and person. Someone like this would have no shortage of work building for people and companies that will not hide you in a warehouse for months/years and will not threaten your life if you breach your agreement. So how in the hell could he ever voluntarily put himself in this situation? When it was Gale (similar to Werner in many ways), we get a brief explanation when he converses with Walter (“I’m a libertarian and if people are going to use meth anyway, it might as well be good”) but I don’t recall anything like that here. I’m sure this job paid enormously, but again, Werner probably has no shortage of opportunities, and he doesn’t strike me as someone who would be materially happier having tens of millions of dollars (euros) instead of only millions. So how does this scene make sense? Why would someone who has worked for and earned stability, love, respect, and comfort ever get in bed with people like Gus and Mike?

      New washery would have people watching it as it gets built, and noticing the rather large space being excavated. In order to build anything, you need plans, approvals, and inspections to verify that you're following the plans. Regularly. Routinely. And all of these would be filed away in government offices. Building even a 1-family home brings a lot of government oversight, and building a commercial building brings even more. Gus wanted something that wouldn't show up on any plans and have no record of it even existing. You'll never get that following normal procedures.

    One thing I never got in the whole Zeigler arc. They go thru all this effort of bringing in engineers and workers without letting them see where they are. They live indoors in a warehouse with no outside view. They're not supposed to know what state they're in, let alone what city.
    But once they kill Zeigler, Fring's team drive the workers out to a secluded location before having the workers all drive themselves to the airport. You can't get to where you wanna be unless you know where you are, right? Was this maybe a change in the original plan that was made once Zeigler died, or was Fring always planning to let everyone drive themself to the airport despite all the prior geographic secrecy?

    I believe Gus always planned to kill Werner. Why else would he reveal his identity to him?

      @@Skinhound They don't show it in this video.
      There is an earlier scene where the first engineer comes and gives a half-assed and overly optimistic assessment of what to expect from the project. After the guy is done talking Mike gets a phone call though we don't hear the caller's voice, Mike essentially says "OK", hangs up and tells the engineer he didn't get the job. Combined with this scene we can infer it was Gus on the other end, and that he's listening in from outside the room somehow. After hearing Werner's assessment he's satisfied to comes out to meet him face to face.

      @@M3ntok also, the other engineer boasted about having constructed cartel tunnels going across the border. Gus wasn't gonna hire an engineer with loose lips
