Scenes like this and Don Eladio's poolside "misunderstanding" really make the case for a BCS style prequel centered on Gus. - Not much is known about Gus's early years. Is he truly Chilean? However, it is known that he and his siblings grew up in poverty. Even as a child Gus did whatever it took to make ends meet. He cultivated a lucuma tree. It provided sustenance and income. But, one day a wild coati ravaged his tree. Gus wounded, captured, and kept the animal in captivity to prolong it's suffering.
Hank's partner's small nod when Gus mentioned Pinochet's government is a nice detail. With his Mexican ancestry, he was probably more familiar with South America's politics and problems than Hank was.
This is amazing, this is years after Gus’s OCD fryer cleaning breakdown with Lyle, it shows Gus is a fighter and has overcome that bout of OCD, not only that but Gus and Hank cleared up their misunderstanding here, Mr Gilligan does it again BRAVO VINCE!

"There's no record of you existing in Chile, which I find strange." Ummm, It's not strange at all, Hank. You're talking about a South American country that went though a series of coups during the 20th century. It would be surprising if you WERE able to find those records. And it's not like you personally flew down to Chile and looked through the files yourself. You probably made one phone call to some guy at their state department who lied and told you "I can't find that name" because he simply didn't feel like digging through a bunch of old government archives just to humor some asshole American cop who thinks the entire world answers to the DEA.
I say this too often, but Hank was a TERRIBLE agent. Every break he got was because of some sort of accident and every lead he gained dried up in front of him until he and his partner died in a hail of gunfire where he had no backup or proper firepower. He never would have “solved” the case if he didn’t use the bathroom at the White’s house and it’s debatable whether or not he even technically did. Skylar and Jr were the ones who alerted the nation, after Hank’s ending. What would make it even harder for Hank is that the CIA bankrolled a lot of these dictatorships (apparently to keep the communists out) so they're not gonna leave evidence behind for other agencies to discover and use against them. That's also what makes Gus' story so believable because the other agencies are absolutely aware of this and know the CIA will be breathing down their neck if they go anywhere near it.
It seems odd that Gus would have chosen an alias which didn't exist in Chile. If anything, you'd chose a super-common name (the equivalent of John Smith). Surprising for someone detail-oriented and allegedly connected to the former government there.
Whats funny is Walts "confession" has so many "truths". Everything that happened really does look like Hank was in charge. This moment can be seen as the falling out Walt says happened between Hank and Gus and Hank basically threatening Gus etc.
Yea but they would have picked up on the fact Gus said Oh Gale apartment etc at the start after they said his finger prints were found at a drug related homicide scene because later Gus said, drug related you say? The papers made no mention of that, I assumed it was just a random crime. So why say arrr Gales apartment right at the start after they said drug homicide? Job done, throw the key away, bring me the next one in please
Gus knew the conversation was going there anyway, he knew Gale was dead, so did the cops & Gus knew there was a possibility of his prints at the crime scene. So by voluntarily offering this information he acknowledges his presence at Gales apartment, but at the same time absolves himself (in terms of the cops suspicions) of his involvement in the murder that took place there. His mentioning of the crime being drug related at the end as kind of a question also serves two purposes, one to create an illusion of ignorance regarding the issue at hand, therefore again minimizing suspicions placed on Gus by the cops & two to find out what other information the cops did or didn’t have regarding the murder, the cop mentioned in the beginning it was drug related, Gus didn’t forget that was mentioned, also he already knew it was, Gus was a slippery one indeed
@@macewindau3060 Very true, however, the cops mentioned a drug related homicide and Gus apparently instantly knew it was related to Gale - Although he himself states that Gales death being drug-related was not in the papers. So how did he know that this whole thing was about Gale without being involved into the drug matter and the murder too? Pretty sure that’s what OP meant.
Gus knows because the cops just told him, but the reality is Gus knew what the interrogation was about before it started. He can’t deny he wasn’t in Gales apartment, but the story Gus gives the cops implies that Gale was the one involved in nefarious activities & that he had no knowledge of what those nefarious activities were. Listen carefully, Gus never explicitly mentions drugs until he pretends to ask about it, he presents a supposition for the police & lets them draw their own conclusions. It’s assigning blame to Gale & since Gale isn’t there to dispute Gus’ account & the cops have no other evidence, the cops to accept Gus testimony which of course absolves him, hell he’s even got a legit alibi for the murder, Gus gives a masterclass in evasion tactics in this scene
@@kronos9186 Yep exactly! The replies are confused about what we mean I think and their responses against it make no sense and keep focusing on different points. Hank seating on the other side of table during investigation already shows his interest was different than the rest three. Mostly quiet and observing Gus closely while other talks is bad ass script and acting level.🎉
Gus really should have taught Walt how to lie like this. Imagine if when Hank showed Walt Gale's notebook, he correctly guessed it was Gale's before Hank even told him. Walt then spins a convincing story about how he met Gale at UNM a few years back and a couple more times at various conferences and such related to chemistry. That the last time he saw Gale, he was sharing some of his notes and asking for advice in a project he was working on. He never got the whole picture but Walt guessed Gale was trying to develop a more economically viable method of manufacturing amphetamines for medicinal purposes, something that pharmaceutical companies would probably pay top dollar for if he cracked it. He gave him some pointers, and Gale showed up a couple of weeks later excited about something, suggesting he figured it out and had Walt to thank for it. He even gifted him a nice little book he keeps in the bathroom.
Funny how Gus subtly mentioned the meal at his restaurant to Hank's colleague. He knows he's suspected by Hank and wants the other cops to start thinking that he might be so obsessed that he's even stalking him.
As smart as Gus was, he was making a grave mistake going into detail about how much he knew about Gale's personality, work ethic, etc. He was revealing a much deeper connection to Gale then just a one-off invitation from someone he hadn't seen in decades.

"Scrambling" ? He went in blind not knowing what they wanted, and produced a detailed personal schedule of his movements providing an alibi for his whereabouts on the night of the murder. I'd call that Ice Cold.
Scenes like this and Don Eladio's poolside "misunderstanding" really make the case for a BCS style prequel centered on Gus.
-
Not much is known about Gus's early years.
Postscript: Hank continued to search and eventually found Gus's records from his time in Chile completely satisfying Hank's suspicion.
The thumbnail had me thinking Hank was about to shred his guitar
LoL
Incredible acting and storytelling
Where exactly does gus "scramble for answers"? He had answers for EVERYTHING!
So why did Hank not ask about the air conditioning unit that supposedly wasn't paid for that supposedly went to Los Pollos Hermanos?
Never reveal all your cards
DEA: Your fingerprints were found at a crime scene.
Gus: I was there. It was a joke.
Gus’s hand shaking was the best part of this scene and you cut it out
"scrambling" lol + they cut the best part of the scene when gus is in the elevator, fans posting scenes always do a better job than these "official" channels
Scrambling? Gus was cool and calm throughout...😊
The man who sat at the end of the table, he looked exactly like Gus Fringe, Bravo Vince.
Scrambling? Gus mailed this!
"There's no record of you existing in Chile, which I find strange."
Ummm, It's not strange at all, Hank.
He endangered his own life, his own career, and his family repeatedly and the only reason it looks good is because we know the truth as the audience. To almost everyone character in-universe, he is a cold, manipulative, obsessive loser.
@BradsGonnaPlay He really was an idiot who was fucking terrible at his job.
You do realize this is fiction, right?
@@rafaelallenblock Yes, we do know it's fiction, your point being? What's with this comments under constructive criticism of plotpoints between different tv series? GoT, Yellowstone, BB I've seen comments like yours everywhere. The fact that it's a work of fiction doesn't mean writers don't have to make sense or try to make it believable, which they do in order to create something truly special and engaging for the viewers.
Of all things that can be said of Gus's behavior in this scene "scrambling for answers" appears nowhere on the list.
It seems odd that Gus would have chosen an alias which didn't exist in Chile. If anything, you'd chose a super-common name (the equivalent of John Smith). Surprising for someone detail-oriented and allegedly connected to the former government there.
3:44 Hanks pulls a classic Columbo. “Yeah, just one other thing…”
Gus is way too polite, calm, corpovative, and nice to talk all those questions, and that gives him out.
Look how Gus cleans the table as he sits down. He does small actions which are in line with his personality.
I cant believe Gus was the bay harbour butcher
Gus proving he had the makings of a varsity athlete
The point is he should have asked about what first instead of instantly knowing it was Gales, before anything was said what so ever and then later saying oh I assumed it was a random crime. He messed up by showing he instantly knew it was about Gales place. Simple as that lol
@@macewindau3060 They never told him a thing, they said we want to talk to you about a drug related homicide, he said oh Gus blah blah, before told anything, then later said oh the papers
forget it lol Its like banging heads against a wall
what a nice man
Gus named it after his friend hector killed. Wonder what would have happened if they looked up that name.
I always thought Gus dropped his guard too soon by being the first to admit that he knew Gale. He should have waited until they dropped the name on him.
They never asked about the HEPA filter receipt that Gale had in his books.
Funny how Gus subtly mentioned the meal at his restaurant to Hank's colleague. He knows he's suspected by Hank and wants the other cops to start thinking that he might be so obsessed that he's even stalking him.
Hank didn't believe one word.
I have no memory of that scene.
Giancarlo is a legend..
Can’t wait to come back and rewatch another 10x
Brilliant how fring handled this. In real life, there would be more nervousness or signals, but perfect here.
Hank's boss was way too eager in dismissing any possible invovlement of Gus in anything.
When the DEA says drug related incident, Gus knows who they are talking about, but then says he thought it was a random crime.
Real life Gus would NEVER do business with Walt & Jessie.
No scrambling was done in this interview.
As smart as Gus was, he was making a grave mistake going into detail about how much he knew about Gale's personality, work ethic, etc. He was revealing a much deeper connection to Gale then just a one-off invitation from someone he hadn't seen in decades.
"Im sure if you keep digging youll find me" 😉
That part were he announces Gale's appartment is shocking for everybody
Gus is so smooth...
Worst part of show was Walt’s brother in law being a DEA agent. Too good for drama.
All that shady stuff happening at Los Pollos Hermanoz in BCS and yet Hank and his goons still couldn't put it together.
Hector coming in and threatening employee and customers. ✅️
Lalo coming in to establish business.✅️
Restaurant getting torched.✅️
Hank and the DEA: We didn't see anything.
Hank also never knew that Mike was the one who put Tuco in prison
I love how Hank is smirking the whole time. He knows Gus is bullshitting
Hank cmon man he saved your life.
The more I watch this show the more I feel Gus is actually the hero. If he got his way the evil salamancas would be out of the picture, walt wouldn't have burned everything to the ground, saul would still be doing business and eladio's empire would be gone.
But noooooo, Gus had to blow it.
Gus is avoiding Hank stare.
He is too cheesy. Hank could smell his cold sweat under false glasses ha ha
We need "The Rise of Gus" to be produced.
Very good poker faces.
How he hands him the cane 😂😂. Like that right bruh what else you got 😂
Psychopath didn't even flinch to every questions asked
Closing in on Los Pollos Hermanos.
I've watched Breaking Bad through twice, the second time seemed like it was on fast-forwards, each scene came and went, gloriously but now I'm condemned to only enjoying these clips.
Maybe time to rewatch Sons Of Anarchy.
Gus was an amazingly clever slick operator. Shame Sallamanca blew his face off in the hospital 🤣
Lmao Gus was so passive defensive you could tell he was BS'ing a mile off.
"I am sure If you keep digging, you will find me". 😂. Since We know Hank nevers gives up, We can deduce that he would have been Killed anyways should Gus stayed alive.
How was Gus Fring ever "scrambling for answers?" I though he was masterful sitting in front of four agents at all times!
As a person who regularly watches real crime documentaries, I had trouble with suspension of disbelief when the full Miranda rights were not read. It could easily have been incorporated in the writing of this scene.
Why didn’t Hank ask him about the part from madrigal that gale signed for?
Because on paper Gus has no relation to Madrigal and there’s no proof they are related…
As Hank said, Gus was kicking their asses here so he wanted to check on the laundrumat without a warrant as he correctly deduced everything
Gus has no relation to madrigall? Los pollos was part of the restaraunt division owned by madrigal.
@@josephsarto689 that is a direct relation though? and makes gus the only possible connection between Madrigal and Gale.
@@potatoplanet14 Gus was the owner of all los pollos locations, its not possible he doesnt know the higher ups in madrigal. No its not a direct connection, but there's too many coincidences there not to look into it, or question gus further.
Gus would stonewall the cartel DEA childs play
Hank is like Marco Mejia from el señor de Los cielos
Scrambling is a stretch. Gus was cool
Am I the one that just rooted for Gus? The only dude that managed to slip by unnoticed while creating an black EMPIRE...and it all fell down because of one middle age chemist going through an midlife ego-crisis
Are you asking how do I know this.?
How did that happen?
How to fix it?
0:49 "Sir your fingerprints were found at a crime scene... drug related homicide"
1:06 Gus: "Gale Boetticher"
2:15 Gus: "Drug related you say... The paper made no mention of that, I assumed it was a random crime. ?"
How did you know it was drug related before Gus? Just a wild guess 😁....?
I'm confused by what you're trying to say lol
@@Ribbit-mx1sd
The moment they said the victim was involved in a drug related homicide, he immediately said that it was Gale. But then later he makes it sound like he didnt know exactly what he was killed over.
Basically he’s changing up his story half way through.
@@afungai1649 He immediately said it was Gale because he knew about the homicide (it was written in the paper). What he didn't know (at least, according to his story) is that the homicide was drug related. That's why he asks "Drug related, you say?".
I don't really see how he is "changing his story"?
gus knew it was drug related because he watched the episode and read the scripts duh
The 'drug related' bit isn't what prompted him to mention Gale. When the agents referred to a homicide, Gus knew that was enough to 'pretend' to come to the conclusion that this is what the agents had brought him there for.
Something tells me he had a hand in General Pinochet's human right abuses.
Why is hank suspecting this chilean philantrophist gentlemen? He looks innocent to me.
Scrambling for answers? WTF 😂
Is that Reggie from Phantasm?
