Your gorgeous Olivia Austin rose reminded me why I bought it in the first place. I didn't have time to cover it this winter, and after watching your video, I am thinking about digging out all the snow and protecting her for the winter. Otherwise, it doesn't grow much in my Zone 4a... Thank you for bringing this beauty to my attention!:)
I would be surprised if you’re not happy with this rose Joe. Mine performed well even in first year. By year two they started to shift. Allows yours to settle and I’m sure yours will do well. :) good luck
Absolutely stunning display of umpteen blooms and that is the beauty of having shrub roses. Feeding roses this year helped them to grow to their true potential. Colours and blooms are perfect.
Thanks Rakesh. Yes the feed and ongoing liquid feed that I’m spraying on I think is really benefitting my roses this year. The colours certainly looked nice to me glad they come out well. Cheers mate
I’m outside in my rose garden this morning, drinking coffee, and watching Jay Jay’s new rose garden update. Peaceful. Thanks for the videos Jay Jay. Zone 6a in U.S.
Nothing better than being in the garden early morning drinking coffee. My favourite pastime! Especially when not a cloud in the sky:) hope you enjoyed your ☕️:)
2:06 I love nodding roses, they have a sort of contemplative, poignant air about them like a Madonna. Idealy elevate them up to eye level. I have no Olivia, but she looks wondrous. Strong performer, it does well to wonder how many thousands of rose plants were tested and passed by in order for Olivia to appear, she is the result of many, many years of hybridization, the distillation of many decades of work and expense to prduce at David Austin.💓💓 Yes, long days and warm weather speed everything up, I must say though, that weather does not cause my Pashmina Veranda to drop her roses, she retains them for a month even, until they look quite dingy and ratty! 😄😄 The happy singing birds add a pleasant ambience to your video, such a glorious time of year. 9:52 Yes, last summer, that is how my Earth Angel looked, this year she is absolutely wonderful with her Victorian era , romantic cabbage roses and wonderful old rose scent underlaid with grapefruit scent. In my opinion, a glorious garden is an antidote to depression. How can one feel despondent in paradise? 10:07 Now THAT in it's bigness and gloriousness never existed in nature. Frequently my contemplation regarding how to have the best success with any plant is to as much as possible, provide it with the environment that it originated from, however, manyof the plants that we grow never existed in nature, so we are growing "glorius freaks" that need coddling to survive.😄😄 The main plant that I have in mind with this comment is irises. I grow the most glorious, wondrous irises, they look like cathedral glass when backlit with sunshine, however, they are plaqued with trouble, mainly basal rot, whereas, there are irises growing roadside here in Ohio that fluorish with no attention whatsoever. I myself am willing to do all that I can for my "glorious freaks" to sustain them.😍😍 10:50 A house buried in rose vines is a joyous sight. Alas, here in Ohio, they freeze down to around 4 feet above the ground level every winter. Thank you for the show and tell. You are more useful in helping people decide what to grow than the salesperson is.
Hi Ralph, yes earth angel and the others still waiting on, what will be left of them after so much rain coming down into there partly opened buds I don’t know, but they are still having a peep nothing more just yet. Yes the bird song is lovely. (And it’s genuine also ;) .) I do like a nice walk around the garden in the early morning especially with not a cloud in the sky. Must dash Ralph and thanks as always for dropping by.
@@Jay_Jay My Earth Angel survived several hours of hammering rain, it flooded out 10% of my 50 by 150 foot vegetable garden. Fifty+ year of gardening has taught me to plant 10X more than we need so that after calamities we still have enough, surplus is given to neighbors. Have a lovely day! Ralph
Hello Jay Jay! A very good observation on Olivia rose Austin, I got her 2 years and 4 months now and that’s what I have seen too! She is so generous with her blooms, continuously creating new buds. I bought because I saw it in your video and I’m so happy with this rose. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Olivia.🌹🌹🌹
I haven’t got this one Jay. David Austin’s roses are sublime. You are right it takes 3 or 4 years in the ground but the ones in containers do well from year 2. I can’t stop looking at mine. I have 26 now. As I’m 78 I hope I’ll be around to see them a few more years.
You see, although I've got plenty to do I've just looked at your video because the other things can wait. Wow, the O. A. looks absolutely lovely. Obviously responds to all the love and attention it gets. As we were first watching the video I could see the red climber on the house and I was thinking, 'What's that one called?' Hey presto, up it came later in the video - Amadeus. I shall have to look it up. And yes, the Maid of Kent is just biding it's time. A lovely look around Jay Jay. By the way, my Rural England is still looking a picture as is The Pilgrim. Thanks, P.
Haha that’s lovely. I must admit I’m keeping an eye on rural England for the back fence but I shouldn’t really. :) you see it’s advertised no scent or light fragrance ? I thought it was lovely.
Thank you Jay Jay for your honest thoughts, and for showing us the whole plant, not just the flower. Olivia is new to me this year, and already budding up for a second flush. Brilliant!
Hi there and thanks guy. Best of luck with your new Olivia. I’d leave her settle for first year or two. But mine flew straight of the bat when planted. But mine gets decent amount of sunshine. I hope yours does well for you and I’m pretty sure it will.
My Olivia is still a baby in a pot but I'm hoping she'll be as lovely as yours! I'll keep in mind the severe pruning in spring & the substantial deadheading during the flowering season. As always, a delight to see that you've got a video up & to hear your greeting!
Hi vintage, if yours is still a baby let her settle for a couple of years. Just whilst the roots grow strong. Then I found deadheading to the first 5 leaf bud isn’t always the best. Deadhead back to a nice firm stem that could support some weight. Best of luck with yours :)
I've just come in from the rain to see that you had/are having a sunny day. Life doesn't seem fair sometimes. I would be tempted to buy an Olivia if there wasn't already so much pink in my garden - as you show, there is a lot to recommend her. I had to smile when you were unable to resist the temptation to show us other highlights in your garden, although you did your best to keep talking about Olivia! I like the way the traditional "flaming June" was turned into flaming July" - are you taking bets on that?
I’m sorry you’re having rubbish weather nik. Like I said earlier I was wearing a jumper only yesterday. But yes this morning not a cloud in the sky, shorts and T-shirt. And yes I couldn’t resist a walk around with camera rolling. In edit, even I hear my brain ticking over at that moment. Yes I couldn’t help myself I’m sure I’m my own worst enemy at times. But I’ve zero doubt I could do that each and every morning with weather like this. :)
Hi Jay Jay, oh she is just stunning, what a beauty. Mine was bare root this year so has a long way to go she is only a baby but just look at what she could become ! Utterly gorgeous, thanks for the video Olivia is exquisite and looks outstanding in your garden there with the house in the background, very lovely indeed.

Some of my cuttings are now 3 years old and are quite large as well as putting on a great show of blooms. Would love to see some other 'spotlight' videos on particular varieties
Hi obiwan yes always an issue with space. I too probably have too much pink I shan’t be getting another. Well… maybe rural England for the back fence :)
Greetings from Kentucky Jay Jay. Your roses are so healthy looking and beautiful. I did grow Olivia Rose Austin two years ago and it is a beautiful rose. However, sadly it developed Rose Mosaic disease last year and I had to remove it. You are correct that when it was healthy it was always full of blooms, and they did kind of hang downwards somewhat. Maybe one year I might purchase it again. Take care, James
@@Jay_Jay Hey Jay Jay, I'm in Frankfort, Kentucky in the US. Which is US growing zone 6B. Our high humidity in the summer makes fighting Blackspot disease a real challenge. Hybrid tea and Floribunda roses don't tend to like our growing conditions. That's why I only grow David Austin roses.
