Thank you! This tutorial worked perfectly for me. I tried two others tutorials and neither worked. I am glad I found your very detailed video. I have a 2019 Mac running Mojave and the only hitch I ran into was that I had to go back and turn off my T2 security settings, instead of setting them to medium, which is no big deal.

    3 things:
    1) You are like a nerdy Australian James Franco!
2)This was awesome, and worked like a charm.
    3) When running Windows from the USB drive, how can I access my internal hard drives? I currently cannot see any of them, and in diskpart they show up as offline.
    Thanks!

  • @headsoftech
    @headsoftech  4 роки тому +20

    COMMON TIPS
    - If changing T2 security to medium doesn't work for you, try turning it off.
    - Newer Macs require the latest v1909 of Windows 10, however for older Macs and eGPU support you can download the most compatible version of Windows 10 (v1903) from a link in the official Microsoft community forums here: answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/install-an-older-version-of-windows-10/3d4b9139-383b-4736-899e-c8cda1619aac
    - Can you uninstall the Virtual Machine after Windows is setup?
+ Yes, but it's useful if you want to read/write files to your Bootcamp drive.
    - Can you install Windows 10 on a slow (non-SSD) USB drive?
+ Yes, but it can run very VERY slow (try getting something faster than 10MB/s): ua-cam.com/video/-g-6l59JjFA/v-deo.html
    - After the free Windows trial, what happens?
+ They ask you every now and then to buy a licence, but you can still keep using it with certain features like changing the desktop wallpaper disabled.
    - Wait, can you access your Windows drive from Mac?
+ Yes, but READ only, for write support you need to install a third party app like Tuxera NTFS - but third party apps can sometimes corrupt your file systems, so do this at your own risk. Alternatively you can use the virtual machine as a proxy.
    - Can you partition your drive to be half Windows, half Mac?
    + From
Guilherme Moreira in the comments: I managed to delete ssd on MacOS creating two partitions one mac os journaling another exfat, with windows I formatted the exfat partition for ntfs, I had to buy wintousb pro instead of choosing the option gpt to uefi I chose “keep the existing partition scheme” (not available in free version), in boot partition select the ntfs drive and so you will have a partition with windows 10 working perfectly and another that appears only on mac for time machine.
    - Can you upgrade Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro?
+ Yes, go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation

Tip: if your external drive isn't showing up in parallels.
1.Download the trial of the NTFS tool by Paragon.(a bit of a slow installation)
2.Use it to format the drive to NTFS.
3.I had to manually disconnect the usb cable, wait a few seconds, plug it back in.
4.When Parallels prompts about where to use device select Windows.
5.Open Windows Explorer to see if the drive has been picked by Windows and not just with (Mac) beside it.
I had to do steps 3 to 5 a few times until the drive showed up. After this you can follow the instructions in the video about opening WinToUSB and install Windows.
Install successful with Mid 2015 MBP 15"(Catalina) on Western Digital BLACK 500GB drive in a USB 3.0 hard drive dock.

Did you have bootcamp normally installed before? Weirdly it did work for me when i did the setup, but now it freezes when i try to boot from the SSD. Sure its another one of the great bugs of Catalina (but wondering if deleting the bootcamp partition i still have from before would make it work again because it does work on all other macbooks without bootcamp and a lower OSX...)

This is awesome!!! Thank u so much :) a couple of things- when I followed your steps my built in keyboard and trackpad worked (no plugin required) and I wasn’t given any additional options when selecting “Security Utility” (in the disk utilities in the startup section) it just requested I input a password twice. Simply adding the password (and repeating it) and then restarting the computer (and holding down the option key) gives a grey padlock over the black background and a password entry box where you can type in the password to get to the disk/drive selection section. Maybe it’s because of a recent update to Mac. :)

Can't believe this worked. Things like this NEVER work for me. I was holding my breath the entire time waiting for errors. I did have a couple hiccups I'll mention in case anyone in the comments experiences the same problem.
    1) If, upon restarting and selecting to boot in your SSD drive it still goes to the Mac startup, try holding the options key again immediately after selecting your SSD drive
    2) If you get an error in wintousb that says there is an iso problem, try repeating the step at 3:53
    3) You will need an external keyboard AND an external mouse for the step at 7:30
    Thanks again for this, Vtudio.

I am so grateful to have discovered these instructions for more reasons that simply loving your enthusiasm and super cool surfing shirt. :) I have trying to achieve success for +/- 10 hours and have tried similar instructions at various from all over the web to no avail until NOW(!) Your guidance is appropriately comprehensive in that you include a few crucial steps which may seem trivial but I just couldn't figure out. I was never seeing my external drive after arriving at the stage of creating the bootable external drive ARrRrgGGHh! But what YOU where ALL others had an epic fail, is to 1) actually call out connecting the external AFTER the VM was running, hence Windows can SEE it but also gave an explanation that sometimes it is not seen and covered the reformat steps again as well as switching back and forth. Dilbert move by me I guess (for 10 hours lol) but it seems it simply wasn't mounted to Windows mischievous eyes heh. It seems I had always had it mounted on the Mac side erroneously. THANK YOU! You saved the day and are as wonderful a human being as they come, cut from golden silk. I love you. hehe Seriously, I deeply appreciate your instructions as they may have prevented me from willing admitting myself into the psychiatric ward of the hospital close by for a 72-hour hold "5150" as it's called here in California. You think I'm kidding? It's called "Adventist Health White Memorial Hospital and is 1.1 miles from my apartment! OK, I am kissing but the sentiment is authentic and a weight has lifted from my chest and previously crumbling sanity. Sending all of my Light both you and all of your loved ones. Disable driver signature enforcement otherwise apple drivers will not install correctly.
    From windows:
Start >> Hold shift >> Restart >> Troubleshoot >> Advanced Options >> Startup Settings >> Restart
On reboot hold option and boot into Windows SSD. On the list of options which appear press F7 to disable enforcement of driver signatures.
When back inside of windows open Device Manager right click all the unknown devices and update driver. Select the folder where Boot Camp installer is as the installer should have extracted the relevant driver. Ensure scan subfolders is checked.
Repeat above for all unknown devices. When prompted about driver signature click install anyway.

You can easily use the on-screen one (click on the bottom-left icon) and just create the user/password combination with that keyboard. Once you are in Windows, the first thing you do is installing the boot camp drivers, which will also install the built-in keyboard drivers.

BootCamp is only intended to assist you with installing Windows on your Mac's internal hard drive and will NOT work with installing on an external storage device. For this you would probably need to use a virtual machine such as Parallels or VMWare.

We've got an old 2015 MacBook Air, and so have been able to complete Windows setup on that- but can't install the specific Windows Support drivers intended for my Mac mini (I have installed the MacBook Air ones). I'm obviously avoiding intending to spend £15 on unwanted USB keyboard/mice rn, so any pro tips on either forcing install of Mac mini support s/w via MacBook Air, or are you rightly going to say "just spend £15 on a one-use cabled keyboard/mouse"? Many thanks!

It would be the same, you could also use shared file systems and switch faster from one system to the other. I see that with ur guide its two single isolated systems, but what exactly is the value the user gets out of this instead of using parallels on the mac itself?

Hello Guys, I have a Sabrent Rocket Pro NVME USB C drive and for some reason the wintousb installation would always fail randomly prompting me to either turn of my antivirus or giving me the message "the system cannot write to the specified device", after a week of installing and reinstalling parallels, using different windows 10 iso files, trying different drive formatting options and even downgrading from macOS Catalina to Mojave, I realized that for some reason the usb c cable that was provided with the hard drive was what was causing the issue. I changed the cable and used the USB C charging cable apple provided with my MacBook to charge the laptop and it worked no issue. I just wanted to let you guys know if anyone had a similar issue.
On my 2018 MacBook Pro I also had to turn the T2 security to off as it would not boot on medium security. I also believe the May 2019 (1903) iso file is better as I had more luck with this than the latest one (November 2019) on Microsoft's website. You can download the previous version of a Windows 10 iso using Rufus.

    • @hackitmaster1505
      @hackitmaster1505 4 роки тому +1

It is possible. You will need over 200gb of storage free though(just delete old downloads or .download files as they are useless). You will need to first download the windows 10 iso from Microsoft’s website, then you will need to open boot camp assistant which is in the utilities folder in applications. Once the app is open it will have instructions and then a graph which lets you adjust how Much storage you want windows to have finally click the install and let it do its thing and eventually it will reboot into windows 10 and with Apple’s driver installer open and then continue with that like in this video

@@johannesschroder9813 I just find the solution, when I tried to close the main window, instead of use the restart from the top menu, it asked me if I want to change the initialisation disk.

Got through to the boot-up. I'm working on a 2017 Macbook Pro, so I by-passed the Startup Security Utility for the boot, and am trying to boot off the USB directly from Startup Disk. However, my WinToUSB drive is still not being read after a few tries. The drive is definitely mounting, and i've gone through the Windows install carefully, so I'm not sure what the issue is. Any help is appreciated.

    Hello,
Excellent! Easy to understand step by step tutorial.
I used WinToUSB Free software to install Win 10 on OWC external SSD for my PowerBook Pro.
It worked fine, but somehow didn’t work for my late 2013 Mac Pro. Does WinToUSB Free works for laptop only, not compatible for Mac Pro?
    Thanks.

The HDD is your windows hard drive in that situation. If you remove it, you're removing the brain and the computer will crash. You can also chose to install bootcamp on the internal drive if you don't want the external drive connected

Victor Lazaro Hi can you elaborate? There’s a way to have Windows running still even if you don’t have the HDD connected??

Loved the video, just one question, my external drive is 2 TB, can I still use my drive as a external drive to storage things and stuff and have a partition of the drive LIKE 500 gb for Windows?
