    *JUNE 2020 CATALINA ADVICE*
    i don’t know much about this but i read up and this worked, i used a macbook pro 2018 and 2tb hdd drive from seagate and spent 2 days trying to get this to work so i thought i’d spare you all the time lol:
    download *wintousb 3.5 from filehorse* on the internet
    download the latest windows 2020 version iso from microsoft
    follow the instructions in the video (see other comments about hard drives not being seen by vmware).
    when wintousb 3.5 is at 100%, *immediately click home* (the first time i did it i waited too long and vmware shut the window)
    then transfer the windows support folder to the boot camp disk.
    shut down vmware.
    when you reach ‘startup disk’ it will not show ‘boot camp windows’ because the latest macs and macbooks have a t2 security chip in them which disallows booting from external media.
    to solve this: restart your mac by clicking apple > restart, then immediately hold down command+r to boot the mac/book into recovery mode. put in your admin password and then you’ll see ‘utilities’. go to the menu bar where it says ‘utilities’ and click on ‘startup security utility’.
    the setting is automatically set to ‘full security’
    choose ‘no security’ and put in a firmware password if you want to make it a little more secure.
    also tick the box that says ‘allow booting from external media’.
    close the window using the red ‘x’
    then go back to startup security utility.
    (staying in recovery mode)
    if the settings *are* as you changed them, then you can select ‘startup disk’, and select ‘boot camp windows’ and it will boot from that without verifying through apple.
    if the settings *aren’t* as you changed them (this is the problem i had) then restart your mac using ‘startup disk’ with macos, and restart in recovery mode again. this time it *should* save your startup security utility settings.
    your mac/macbook will now boot in windows using the external usb/hdd/ssd hopefully!!
    *you will need a usb mouse and keyboard to control windows until you install the drivers from boot camp*:
    i had an issue where if you ran the drivers from ‘setup’ as shown in the video, the installation gets hung up on ‘apple usb virtual host controller’
    if you run c:\windowssupport\bootcamp\drivers\apple\bootcamp.msi instead of the normal setup.exe the installer runs well but the drivers won’t be 100% as good as macos - the @ and “ key will be swapped and the speakers sound pretty crappy (if anyone has a driver to sort this i’d much appreciate it).
    UPDATE: i tried through setup again after doing bootcamp.msi and it worked fine that second time.

      @owenbaker3779 4 роки тому +1

      alice souza have you tried booting it into recovery mode and starting windows up from there? make sure your external hard drive is connected, but the way i always boot into windows is through holding the option key on startup and selecting boot camp so am not sure about through startup disk :/ hope that helps somewhat

    • @jabberwockyings
      @jabberwockyings 4 роки тому

      owen baker yeah, i tried through recovery mode, pressing option, everything. my external hardrive, when on the wintousb software only has one partition, so i'm thinking maybe that's the root of my problem. thing is, i have no idea how to format the drive as shown in the video (like, with an efi part and a data part)

    • @owenbaker3779
      @owenbaker3779 4 роки тому +1

      alice souza yes just ensure you do it exactly in the video with the disk management on windows and wintousb. it should be named ‘boot camp’ like you called it so maybe the partition renamed your drive. did you use wintousb 3.5 from filehorse?

    When you erase the partition of the external disk on MAC (minute 3:00), open Disk Utility then select View --> All Devices because if this is not selected you might not be able to choose the Scheme GUID Partition Map. Also use WintoUSB 3.5 otherwise the latest version 5.8 it will ask you to format the partition again and you will use the EFI partition. I hope this helps :)

    For those following this now....
    Oct 2019, OS Mojave
    Retina 15, mid 2015
    Download wintousb 3.5
    You will encounter error during installation.
    Head back to disk management, allocate another 200MB of space, and format as fat32, name it Boot (or whatever you like, just differentiate it from Boot Camp)
    Go back to installation, use the NEW “boot” as efi. Vola! It should install!
    Try change startup disk, and you will encounter the “bless error”
    Reboot your Mac and hold alt. Your efi should appear. Boot into that, now you will most likely encounter a BSOD while booting for first time.
    From here, reset your PRAM, (Command, Option, P, R) and you should be able to boot into windows using the method i mentioned above.
    You are welcome!

    Worked perfectly except for a few minor issues. I installed Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit on an external hard drive. Since I am using El Capitan on my Mac I had to use VMware Fusion version 8.5. Also as someone else commented the older 3.6 version of WinToUSB needs to be used. Otherwise everything went smoothly. Kudos to 9to5Mac! To boot into Windows I had to use the Startup Manager (press the Option key while restarting) to boot into "EFI Boot"; the System Preferences Startup Disk pane only shows “Boot Camp Windows” which will NOT boot!

    • @jameswilson9011

      I think it's a new idea, with new bugs and firmware/driver consideration. USB and PCIE is becoming synonymous, and hardware matters more for bandwidth. USB-C 3.1 Gen 2, platform controller hubs between CPU and the USB port has to deal with bandwidth outside being large, and transfer power with Thunderbolt
      Bootcamp dual-booting, NTFS (windows) and exFAT works in both environments. Modularity w/ support behind it, standard protocols, and acknowledgement of pros/cons to particular behaviors.

    • @Superficialt
      @Superficialt 6 років тому +9

      Because I believe it goes against the Microsoft EULA which states that you can only install Windows on a computer's main boot drive (although I haven't actually read the EULA...). I don't think there's a technical reason why it couldn't be incorporated in BootCamp, but Apple isn't going to facilitate shady activity like that.

From there instalar win 10 to the external drive via wintousb. Then go back to MacOS and delete bootcamp. Method 2 - use a pc with windows, maybe your old laptop or a friends pc to instal win 10 via wintousb.

    I just finished this on my MacBook Pro 2019. A few hiccups but all in all great tutorial. Here were the issues I ran into and hopefully it will prevent someone from searching around like I did. First issue, when I erased the external ssd in Mac the formatting options shown weren’t available. Under the disk utility menu click view and choose show all devices. Second was my option to boot from my ssd said I didn’t have permission to do so. Follow this tutorial is you have T2 security chip: support.apple.com/en-us/HT208198. Third was you must make sure you use wintousb version 3.5 or it won’t allow the steps to proceed. Fourth was if you are using Win 10 home, you must use the April release or Windows will begin to load then go to blue screen of death. Fifth was my boot camp setup would bomb out or lock up when running to correct drivers. (You must use USB keyboard and mouse to setup the first time). Run the boot camp.msi instead and it worked perfectly. And finally, my Windows activation would not work and kept throwing an error. Slui 4 function would not work to activate either. Do the following to activate from running cmd prompt as admin. Type slmgr.vbs /ipk . To activate online, type slmgr.vbs /ato. These extra steps got me up and running. Thanks!

    Tip for Mac OS High Sierra users and people that get "The bless tool failed to set the current boot disk":
    On the disk partition tool (when you want to format the external drive), select "Show all devices" (Show volumes only is selected by default). And then, format the *disk*, not the volume. That will give you the option to select GUID partition map, which will create an EFI partition that will allow you to boot from the disk.
    Then, just proceed with the instructions as usual.

You will need to use terminal to reformat do this, otherwise there will be no EFI partition to work with win2usb. Second I could not get VMFusion 10 to work correctly detect the external drive. Hi I've tried it 5 times and these are the things that made me succeed :
    - I have an internal Crucial SSD 240 GB card that I have put in an external case (Orico), every time the windows 10 (October 2018 version) didn't recognize my drive via VMWare, it kept connecting and disconnecting (tried to format in MacOS, NTFS, MS Dos but didn't work). Then I took the internal SSD (formatted in MacOS journalized system in GUID) and put it in a USB Docking station, connected it to windows 10 through VMware, it was recognized by windows 10, and allowed me to format it to NTFS
    - The WinToUSB 4.5 downloaded on the web site didn't work (it told me that Windows 10 Pro wasn't supported in trial mode, the same thing with Win 10 Home), I downloaded the 3.5 version (googled it) and it worked nicely
    - After installing windows 10 on my external SSD (plugged in on my USB docking station) , I updated it with all the possible windows update, then shut down windows. I took out my Crucial SSD from the docking station and put it again on my external case (Orico), booted it again on windows and it worked. Think that the windows upgrades downloaded the correct drivers for the USB Hosts.

    Hello everybody, thanks for this tutorial Jeff!
    I followed your introductions step by step but stocked on one...
    I got a MacBook Pro from 2016 with High Sierra and I want to copy windows on a SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD.
    But the SSD doesn't connects on windows. As seaabird suggested I solved the problem that my Mac asks me, where I want to connect the device.
    When I connect the device to windows I can hear the "connection sound" (like on 6:54), but I can´t see it under "Disk Management" and after a few seconds I hear the "disconnection sound". After that, the device reconnects and disconnects all the time...
    I tried both versions of windows, April and October but I still got this problem.
    Does anybody got a solution for this problem?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Tom

    I followed this and it worked.
    Just to share, the stage where you boot from the USB drive for the first time can stick at the Windows Logo, Getting Ready for literally hours (over 6 in my case, I ended up leaving it going overnight.) So my advice would be don’t get impatient like I did on my first attempt, as long as the Windows spinning dots are moving just let Windows do it’s thing and it will eventually work.

    • @MrChrisTattersall
      @MrChrisTattersall 3 роки тому

      @Safiullah Taufiq yes, as far as Windows is concerned it’s a normal installation. Whether they’re playable is a different matter as Macs tend not to have the greatest graphics chips or cards as they’re not really targeted at the games playing market. But yes, you can install them and with the graphic quality settings put to low or medium they are playable.
      Of course 1 caveat, all of this applies to the Intel based Macs only, Windows support on the new M1 Mac’s is a different kettle of fish altogether.

    For anyone trying this right now and coming up on some obstacles such as:
    - if your drive's partition doesn't look like a really big/extensive rectangle or named similarly to the one in the guide;
    - if when you attempt to delete it and then do the New Simple volume but can't find an 'unallocated' volume and none of
    the ones you have available show the " New Simple volume" when you right click them;
    - if when you do the New Simple volume step but then the drive connects disconnects and reconnects over and over;
    Here are some solutions you might be looking for:
    You need to go back to your Mac desktop, connect the disk to the mac specifically and remove any passwords you may have given the disk.
    Once you do this and attempt the "delete volume" step again you should see the partition rectangle is bigger/longer and named differently as soon as it shows up on screen. It should allow you to do the delete volume and new simple volume steps without problems. Is this your problem? maybe not, but it was for me so I thought I'd post it here for anyone having similar problems and looking for solutions.

    Doesn't work on Mojave. Followed every step to the letter, even paid attention to the comments that suggest to format the DRIVE and not the VOLUME, but nothing. Windows installed on the drive, pops up in macOS as NTFS drive, Parallels offers to mount it - but won't. It also won't show up in SysPref/Startup Disk. I already lowered security level in recovery boot mode and allowed booting from external drives, but nothing. Windows 10 on an external drive in Mojave just isn't meant to happen.

On my previous Hackintosh, I could just select in the BIOS to boot from another drive entirely before getting into the Apple bootloader, so there it wasn't an issue. But with the 2018 Mac mini, you're outta luck if you don't have a system drive that's large enough for both Windows and macOS. Luckily all gaming platforms (Steam, GOG, Origin, Uplay, Epic, Blizzard, ...) can install to external drives, so since I only use Windows for gaming, I can live with a small partition on the system drive for Windows and an external drive for my game libraries. 11:20 after doing all the steps and getting to this point, the Windows hard drive doesn’t appear in the Startup Disk. The only way I can boot up from windows is going into Recovery Mode.
    After selecting the Windows drive in recovery mode, I then need to restart or shut down the computer a couple times because I get a folder with a question mark and nothing boots up. After doing this then I am able to boot up in Windows.
    I have my Mac OS installed on an external SSD. When I want to restart in OS X via Boot camp manager in Windows, it points to the internal HD and sees nothing so again, I would need to go back into Recovery Mode to find my Mac SSD.
    Feels like too much of a hassle based on my experience. Is there a better way to switch back and forth from each OS? I just want to use windows to run my Steam games without lag or performance issues while not having to reboot my computer multiple times.

    This still works perfectly by October 2019. However, there is one more thing I concern about: Since we are using the trial of VMware Fusion, is this only working within 30 days?

    • @oscaraguirre5911
      @oscaraguirre5911 5 років тому

      No, VMware is just a software for virtual machines. Once you have installed windows in your external drive you'll have it there until your drive dies. The thing that happens after 30 days is that you'll not be able to use virtual machines anymore, but cuz you already have installed everything is fine.

    Thanks for that Jeff. A couple of quick questions...
    1 . To start your new version of Windows from the external drive from cold I take it you just hold the Option key when powering up?
    2. Once all fully up and running do you just uninstall VMware? (and that will remove your temporary copy of windows too)?
    Thanks

    To those who can’t see the boot camp drive after restarting the computer(or it shows “the bless tool was unable to set the current boot disk” when selecting disk) I had the same problem. But after some research I finally solved it. I found that we have to have an EFI section in our drive. I’m by no means an expert so I’ll try my best to explain. So go to disk utility. In the top left corner, tap view, show all devices. Then select whichever drive you’ll be using. Then click erase. Format will be “Mac OS extended (journaled). Scheme “GUID Partition Map). After this just follow along the tutorial. After you’re done, restart your Mac and hold down command and R. The system will go into recovery mode. Click “utilities” on the menu bar and then “startup security utility”. Then select “no security”(not sure if full security mode would work, but you can try) and “allow booting from external or removable media”. Exit the window and open it again to see if the changes are saved. If not, restart the computer and log into recovery mode again and it should do the job. Then restart your Mac and hold down option key, you should finally be able to see the boot camp drive disk. Hope this will help some of you.

    For those with (very) new macs that are having issues when booting: you need to start your Mac in recovery mode and access boot security settings. You need to change both! I'm getting stuck at 06:53 onwards. I'm trying to connect to a 2TB Seagate Expansion Desktop Drive via a USB-C Adaptor and working from a MacBook Air. Disk Management doesn't recognise the drive. Any ideas on how to fix? Thanks very much.

      Bmw Mperfomance that’s because Disk Utility has become simplified. In Disk Utility, at the top of the screen, select View and View All Devices. Now perform the Erase on the highest tier of the external hard drive. It should allow you to set Scheme to GUID now. I made the same mistake at first by not going this route and ended up with the same error message.

      Also at the time of creating new volume in windows please uncheck the quick format option. It take some more time to format the disk but it will solve your issue. Here in Step 21 you have to apply 9to5mac.com/2017/08/31/how-windows-10-mac-boot-camp-external-drive-video/
