the thing is Pilots sometimes chase Orcas away, when stopping, Orcas chase them and so on. It is mostly a huge Pilot group who chases a small group of Orcas. You can find Videos Orcas killing lonesome Pilot. Think it is something like Waterbuffalos chasing a lion pride...they are a threat but also prey. And in most regions Orcas and Pilots are not fighting for food, thats a false information too.
A bit more research and this is clearly a bit of over-hype. For example the prey list of both species is largely different. The pilot whales DO NOT 'give Orcas the shivers'.
When I was a teenager, we used to surf and sometimes these guys would be right next to us in the waves. It would freak me out but once you knew it wasn't sharks, you'd actually feel safer having them around.
A pity, perhaps. If Orcas and the like knew how vile WE were, they'd be attacking us to pull out OUR liver. After all, we are killing their world, as well as our own, and murder them anyway, as we do all animals, but Orcas are actually as stupid as all animals and don't KNOW we do this, so not clever anyway, but then, neither are we, cos we can't live without the planet we are killing every day. Ha! Losers!
Pilot whales are slaughtered annually as they pass through the Faroes Islands on their migratory route. The islanders corner them in a bay, stick hooks in their bodies to prevent them from escaping and kill them with machete blows. The bay turns red with blood. The islands belong to Denmark, which protects the massacre with its navy. The killing is done for fun as they do not need the meat as they live off industrial fishing. Pilot whales move in families, fathers, mothers, children and nephews.
I almost got head butted by a dolphin. I was setting up for a wave and it came within 6 inches. That feeling of a shark jumping at you is crazy. Luckily it was a dolphin and barely missed me
It should be noted; Pilot whales are the second loudest species on earth, with their vocal range reaching up to 240khz. This may have something to do with the orcas avoiding them. Loud sounds can disorient an orca. It's believed that a sperm whale, being able to achieve sounds of up to 270khz, can actually paralyze an orca if the sound wave hits them directly multiple times. This may be the case with Pilot whales, too.
I remember a female diver trying to swim with sperm whale being victim to a ultrasound that hurt her very badly and she was lucky to survive. With some animals you just shouldn't get into the water.
Thanks for sharing 😊 that was very knowledgeable. I had no clue that these whales were so loud. Very intelligent creatures. We take them for granted by capturing and slaughtering them or selling them to aquariums like SeaWorld. I understand if the whales Injured or in need of our assistance but to capture them for the parks pretending to use them as knowledge for the public when they leave all of these parts out when your dining with shamu. Just saying the public almost caused SeaWorld to go bankrupt after the attack from a killer whale. Made promises to drop there breeding program yet another orca got pregnant after this bill was signed and supposedly they mated through the gates since a male orcas private parts reach the length of 13 feet. But that was bs and people still support them. Smh. Hope I shared something knowledgeable as well. Save our whales and marine life!
240kHz is not a measure of their loudness, it is a frequency that we would call ultrasonic. maybe they can see your insides :D loudness is measured in decibels (dB) and anything above 100dB is painful to humans.

Without scuba I kayacked out to a moving heard of these off Malibu in the early 70's and with just mask and snorkel I dove down roughly into the middle of their midst. I was astonished at how big they all were. A trio of smaller ones came near me as I treaded water in water so deep I could not see the bottom. I heard their whistles and felt their calls ripple through me sonicly. It was an experience I'll never forget. There had to be a few dozen and they were moving north. I was anchored with my sailboat on the BAJA side of the sea of Cortez near Loreto. I saw what looked like a pod of dolphins approaching us. I got my 2 grand kids up to see them. As they got closer, I realized that they looked too big. Hey! Those aren’t dolphins, they’re PILOT WHALES! Wow. My grand kids and I quickly jumped in my 12’ rigid inflatable dingy and took of with the pod. I had to be on a plane to keep up with them. They were doing 8-10 kts with no effort. We followed with them for about a quarter mile. Unlike dolphins that will often play with you when you do this, they completely ignored us. An amazing experience. Very interesting video, you don’t hear much about Pilot Whales. Thanks. PS. The Sea of Cortez, Mexico is an amazing place for whale and dolphin experiences. We had a giant Blue Whale come right up to us while we were sailing along. He paralleled us for about half a mile so close that his pectoral fin rubbed the hull a little. He was at least 80 feet! Nearly twice the length of our 46’ sailboat. Yeah, another amazing Sea of Cortez experience. And I could go on. Capt Fred.

We saw pods of dolphins every day and it was a real treat to see pilot whales about every other day.😊Of my many trips to the beach since the 1980s I haven't seen a pilot whale since. All ocean mammals populations have been reduced, but I miss pilot whales the most
So because you haven't seen pilot whales at a particular beach you conclude that "all ocean mammals populations have been reduced". Glad you are not a scientist with that false logic. Pilot whale are the 'Bogans of the Sea' noisey, agressive and scrappy. I was in the water with the ones at Cheynes Beach WA a year ago. One of the first things I noticed was the scars of teethmarks on many of them. At first I thought it may have been close calls with Orcas but I was told Orcas leave whenever pilot whales are around. It suddenly clicked that the scars were the same spacing as the pilot whale's teeth. They fight all the time amongst themselves. A hard thing was when you were assigned to a baby. It would keep moving around the survivors squealing looking for their moms. It was loud and begging. This sound will never leave me. Most of the adults died the first night because volunteers were turned away and the few that were there, could only turn over and drag the little ones back to the water. I will NEVER AGAIN listen to "Stay away, you cannot help". But by far the hardest was when the MEDIA LIED about the whales re-stranding and in fact the authorities pulled the survivors out of the water, one by one and shot them. I had to leave at that point, as did many others on that day. If you look at most stranding incidents, you will see a long gently sloping beach with one or more headlands. When they come in close to shore, it's suspected they do not get an echo back from the beach and get confused. They then make the wrong choice.

You have two different types of orcas, one who eats fish and one who eats seals, dolphins, whales, sharks etc. Both are called killer whales, but the one who eats seals, sharks, dolphines and whales will see a group of pilote whales as a buffet.
I seen that footage of Lisa Costello and was horrified, relieved yet horrified. I wanted to be a marine biologist but saw an episode of Jacque Cousteau and they showed a huge whales eye just under the surface of the water and under the rubber boat and that freaked me out. Of course JAWS came out and sealed the deal. I gave up my dream of becoming a marine Biologist and now live in a land locked state and I own an African Cichlid fish store..

Love these dolphins for their behaviors against the bullies of the sea. One thing they should pick up from the bullies is to eat white sharks and leopard seals of the southern oceans.
It seems odd to me that orcas are called "killers" and "bullies" because they survive by eating smaller creature who survive by eating smaller creatures.. What else should they eat? Should they kill cattle and make hamburgers or become vegans?

The only reason the Orcas avoid the pilots is probably because of the size of the pod. Take 3 Orcas and 3 pilot whales and the Orcas would butcher them.
@@harshk9342 😂 yup it's like chimpanzee vs gorilla you only have 1 male silverback per group and you have 30 adult male chimpanzee per group. You have to really account that's gonna be group battle. I actually theorize that orcas only became apex because we hunted pilot whales close to extinction that it's rare to see a pod of pilot whales close to their maximum known pod size. In short if their population return to what it used to be we might actually see orcas not just dethroned but also pushed to fringes of ocean pilot whales do not inhabit.
I wonder if the Orcas leave, when Pilots are around.. Because Pilot Whales are one of the few creatures that can eat a baby Orca. And, although much slower than orcas, pilots in numbers can catch young orcs.
Tigers get chased by wild dogs...does this make a wild dog an apex predator or feared by Tigers? Of course not, just a very well exucuted strategy by the dogs. The Tiger weighs the risk to reward and usually makes the decision to move on. I would hypthosize the same thing is going on here.

We were snorkelling on the Great Barrier reef a few years back when a pod of pilot whales arrived. On first sight of those dorsal fins we thought they were huge sharks and got out of the water fast. Once we realised they were pilot whales we jumped back in to watch them. We had absolutely no idea they might be dangerous. Unfortunately (or fortunately) by the time we got back in they were moving away from us, and too far off to see clearly.
Re your last line, the danger was probably as much as with orca / sharks, anyway. No recorded attacks. To be honest, I don't understand why they are called cheetahs. The mako shark looks like a cheetah of the sea - it is a loner, very slender and light, mobile, is an active predator and develops speeds up to 120-130 km/ h.
@@ibrahimsultanov7355this is the one time i agree with you, pilot whales cant even catch orcas in a sprint or reach them, and cheetahs dont have huge numbers. Cheetah of the sea would be mako like you said, smaller but much faster and very agile

Frankly I love whales but i watch this thinking the best way to see a whale (or the best emotional response) is by fluke. years ago I was living in the Pilbara region of WA and at the end of one of the really long wharves up there. Whales had become endangered and one hadn't been seen for decades. as i stood there watching the expanse of the ocean i saw something on the horizon and it was coming toward me. at that time i had no concept it was a whale. I stood there and continued to watch it and it went basically directly underneath me (and the wharf) and then kept on swimming. no one was there with me at the time and no one believed me. About five years later my dad saw one and then he believed me. Their numbers are greater now, but i can honestly say it was a magnificent and unexpected and even magical experience.

Once I was trying to catch fish in Florida in a pass/inlet and there was a huge school of mullet around. Bottle nosed dolphins showed up and herded the mullet together and attacked. Then something bigger showed up and took over. They must have been pilot whales or maybe false killer whales, I don't know which. But they were bigger than the dolphins by quite a bit, and dark. It was fascinating to see. I grew up fishin' in that area and spent a crazy amount of time around the bay and beaches of Sarasota. That's the only time I ever saw those animals, whatever they were. Another time in Costa Rica I saw something very similar, dolphins feeding and something bigger and darker showed up. Both times they were a little too far away for a good look. In Costa Rica I was on the Pacific Coast, so it probably wasn't the same kind both times.

Orcas that eat sea mammals would probably not be as intimidated as those that primarily eat fish. I am not convinced that Orcas in general are scared of Pilot whales. A large group however could threaten a small pod of Orca. Not with being harmed so much as being harassed to the point of driving them away.
Pilot Whales drive off Orcas, and Sperm Whales (the individually most powerful apex predators) actually fuck them up (as well as many species of great whales such as Humpbacks). Only humans with current technology generally lack something to worry about in terms of conflict with other species.
Right. The mammal eaters are quite ambush hunters. More aggressive and fearless .. they’re confusing smart with fear. Orca’ fear nothing but god. The name itself orcinus orca 'of the kingdom of the dead,' the champion of the deep 🌊🐳 the whale killer..we call killer whale now.
Pilot whales generally have larger groups, and both species are intelligent group animals, this why Orca tend to avoid serious confrontation due to the number imbalance. 1 on 1 it is not even a contest.

I can see how an individual could be targeted for food and vice versa if an entire pod came by a solo orca they could likely kill it. I could also see a large pilot pod being aggressive or territorial to an orca pod if there were babies in the pod or they were feeding. That's really interesting to hear an orca raising a pilot whale, theyre known to have string motherly instincts even after theyre young grow into maturity, but never heard that theyll raise another species

Les globicéphales sont massacrés par les japonais
the thing is Pilots sometimes chase Orcas away, when stopping, Orcas chase them and so on.
Luckily it was a dolphin and barely missed me
Imagine your headstone saying "Eaten By a Shark While Surfing".
Imagine being eaten by a shark
It should be noted; Pilot whales are the second loudest species on earth, with their vocal range reaching up to 240khz. This may have something to do with the orcas avoiding them. Loud sounds can disorient an orca. It's believed that a sperm whale, being able to achieve sounds of up to 270khz, can actually paralyze an orca if the sound wave hits them directly multiple times. This may be the case with Pilot whales, too.
Agree. The only reason Orcas stay away from sperm whales is because of the loud sound they make. Not because they are scared of them hunting them.
I remember a female diver trying to swim with sperm whale being victim to a ultrasound that hurt her very badly and she was lucky to survive. With some animals you just shouldn't get into the water.
Wow very good to know.Such mesml Thanks for sharing your knowledge of the whales 🤗
They look like Dolphins who didn't watch their diet and drank too much beer.

Exactly! But poor Belugas are prey to even polar bears. Only if they have similar abilities to the Pilot Whales. That would be nice for their species.
It was a hard paddle to catch up to them. The water was crystal clear and I could see many from my viewpoint.
Capt Fred.

Back in the 1960s Pilot Whales were being trained by the US Navy to help in retrieving deep ocean . They were diving down to 3000 feet
In the early 1960s my family would vacation at Ormand Beach near Daytona.
By the way pilot whales are actually terrible "pilots" and they beach themselves way more often than any other species.

As these two species are two of the most intelligent at sea, cooperation, games may not be excluded between killer and pilot whales
Can they hybridize?
This is my first time hearing of these fascinating creatures.
Yes, they are also called sea devils. They are super cute, despite their reputation and tenacity.
Indeed!
Thank you, you are special. You work following your heart, not your ego. Be safe, and be blessed. Ps, don't stop writing, maybe we could get some of the others to wake up and start listening.
Also, careers in marine biology are scarce and competitive.

😂 yup it's like chimpanzee vs gorilla you only have 1 male silverback per group and you have 30 adult male chimpanzee per group.

Species in question smart enough to know 'all kinds of hell could break loose' should they choose to attack a human.

To be honest, I don't understand why they are called cheetahs. The mako shark looks like a cheetah of the sea - it is a loner, very slender and light, mobile, is an active predator and develops speeds up to 120-130 km/ h.

Watching this video today, I learned something.

And I won’t go on because I’m only just now lifting out of some despair with the weight of so many murdered children from the war 😢 The saying is “It’s darkest before the Dawn” and I’m feeling that we are on a precipice inbetween times. Coming into a lighter time where we can exercise our God given virtues of kindness and compassion. This is what I am envisioning for humanity 🤍💙🤍
Interesting! We were in Nova Scotia in 2019 and we took a whale watching tour in a Zodiac. There had been Orca in the area the previous two days and we were out in search of them and all the tour boats were in contact with one another on their radios and no one could find the Orcas but one of the guides located a large pod of Pilot Whales, so now I am wondering if that is why the Orcas were gone. Never would have thought that would be an issue.
Good to see Orcas worry too.

This is givin Jurassic world cross species genetics cuz I’ve never heard of these ever in life til just now lol.
Fact’s
Pilot whales generally have larger groups, and both species are intelligent group animals, this why Orca tend to avoid serious confrontation due to the number imbalance. 1 on 1 it is not even a contest.

Yes!!! What those people do is horrific, sadistic and primitive.
So, they ought to start breeding cows and pigs in small cages, just waiting to get big enough to go to slaughter house?
I’m a fan of you work brother thanks for the video
I appreciate that
Im surprised by a lot of this info. Ive heard of polot whales washing ashore and hearing it was killed by an orca.
Fun fact pilot whales similar to orcas are actually husky n large dolphins whose size put them in the whale weight class
FANTASTIC ANIMALS !!!
