It's good to see trains on the Portland line. Portland, our only natural deep water port. The neglect of this line is truly lamentable with a 40kph speed limit ,hopefully, this line has a brighter future, closet port to the Wimmera, mallee grain producing regions, enjoyed the video👍Upgrade the Portland line and put more trains on it
As local lad, I saw one of the last trains on the now removed Balmoral line. With mines, grain and freight imagine the traffic that could be on the line today, linking the Port to Western Victoria ☹️
Great video as always Adam, was a nice chase and got plenty of photos and videos of it myself. Nice to see you out there chasing them too. Keep up the awesome photos and videos mate.
@@Thetiersofmadness Never heard of it. Why are they fucking up Melbourne? Union station? Is that what they're calling Sunshine station now? Or is it some new junction station on the Western regional line?
@@garynewton1263Union Station will become a well-known place in Melbourne’s east after it was selected to be the name of the new, premium station being built at Mont Albert and Surrey Hills. The name was selected from a number of possible names under consideration following extensive public consultation and feedback in 2021. Union Station reflects the coming together of the old Mont Albert and Surrey Hills stations and includes recognition of the nearby Union Road shopping village.
@@garynewton1263 Mont Albert and Surrey Hills stations on the Belgrave/Lilydale line were demolished and line was put into a rail trench where a new station called union was put in the middle as part of the level crossing removal project
Wait, did they turned the whole consist around at some point? Unless I'm mistaken they would have had to run all the way back to the Ararat Triangle to do that, I just expected them to do a normal run around and have C501 leading with the SoP parlour car at the rear on the way back.
Great video Adam, well recorded, a little more footage of the port area would have been nice. I haven't been to Portland since 1977 so good to see the line is still open. Nearly skipped past your video as I thought it was Portland NSW and not Victoria. My Grandfather had a half share in a piggery at the back of the sawmill (is it still there?) near Gorae level crossing. Looks like a lot of speed restrictions on the line too.
State Govt should re-open passenger services to Portland. They could just run it from Ararat to Portland. Extend the passenger service to Horsham or Kaniva. I'd love to have been on this. Only thing is where is Portland, Hamilton and Dunkeld stations? I know Portland is gone coz I explored it twenty years ago but Dunkeld & Hamilton......have they been demolished?
The old stations being there isn't necessarily going to make it easier to reopen the line, just look at Geelong to Ballarat where the cost of refurbishing the stations to meet modern requirements for disabled access and the like while retaining the heritage aspect is insanely high. Most likely you'd end up with something similar to Creswick; the old station/platform still not being in use by the railway but a brand new one built as close as feasible to it that is.
@@cabbagepatch8947 Why wouldn't it be now? I'm assuming people in Hamilton and Portland want to travel to Ballarat and Melbourne and vice versa? Anything beats coaches.
Fantastic presentation, thankyou

Exactly. Victoria's oldest town, lots of towns along the line. Beautiful countryside.
Once again, your sense of visual artistry greatly enhances the train content of your video. Thank you for it.
Nice well thought out locations Adam
Nice work. Lots of great captures. 👌

Good on you being able to film the Union shuttles and make it all the way to Portland👍
Union shuttles? What's that?

Great video, much enjoyed! Shame this line is very under-used. I know that Portland is a great deep water port. Cheers from Wagga
Line speed looks to be reduced to about 40km/h?
Correct!

The Portland - Ararat line was not very busy with passengers when it was running.
