@@gregbaxter6162 Are you thick? It's not about "a quick buck", it's about getting income so making videos can be his job. That way he can entertain us AND have a life. lol
You got quite a point. I mean...was Golem like ever in any important pokemon fight in the game? I think in the base game it could have been brutal (RBY) because of how common normal attacks are, but you quickly reach a point of getting grass/water moves which is like an instant kill for it. So it should be looked for counter moves for grass and water pokemon if it gets implemented.@@Panikdemet
Not only does Giovanni own a massive underground base, he also straight up owns the game corner. Which is where you get the most expensive TMs in the game. So yeah, I think Giovanni having access to every single TM he'd ever need is pretty lore-accurate
Speaking of that, why Thunderbolt on Rhydon when it has access to Body Slam? Its Special is pretty garbage so you're best off going for EQ or Rock Slide even against targets weak against Electric.
@@ShiningJudgment666 There is some argument to be made for it being about sending a message over being supported by the Pokemon's statistics. Very mafia.
@@Shalakor I suppose. But then again, why not Blizzard or Ice Beam in that case? Even if they're weak off its Special stat, there's the Freeze chance and Gen 1 Freeze is broken.
Blaine not having Magmar in Gen 1, especially Yellow, felt so wrong on so many levels! I wish there was an appropriate storyline encounter that could make use of Electabuzz as well, but c'est la vie...
Gotta love how Bug's reputation for being bad juxtaposes the "turns out if you give the bug type even one decent move it breaks the entire game, it's just that strong".
A few years back, my local anime con ran a Pokemon League Challenge using the Gen 6 game cartridges. I was the Bug-type Gym Leader. I ended up making a team of powerhouses that were a rather effective wall against most challengers. In the hands of someone who doesn't worry about traps, setup moves, etc., and just wages (as Misty puts it) an all-out offensive, Bugs can be the deadliest type in the game with insane amounts of type coverage.
I am all for adding Butterfree onto Eirka's team. It fits the vibe of Erika and the lack of any bug or flying type trainers means it's not gonna be on a major battle otherwise. Plus having three poison/grass types feels redunt and vileplume and virtbell are pretty iconic to her. I think Eggxcute could also work for her but that's neither here nor there.
I always thought that removing Bruno and adding an all normal type E4 member would’ve been good. Gen 1 had a nice assortment of normal types that were rarely or never encountered.
The point is to keep it as close as possible to the original game but changing the things that are lackluster about it, removing an iconic elite four member is the complete opposite of what Smith is trying to accomplish here
Love these changes. Ivysaur works on Erika, but I would give my vote to butterfree instead. Both fit her theme well enough and I feel like her being forced to take so many poison types, while there being a poison gym, is weighing her down.
I'd almost like to see Misty with a wartortle if Erica and Blaine get their respective type starters. Still I think your changes will make things a lot more interesting.
I was coming down to the comments to suggest Squirtle for Misty once I saw him give Blaine Charizard. Given the player character will be collecting the original starters, having a stage from each one featured on a leader's team seems appropriate.
I mean, the second Gym Leader fight doesn't really need any more Pokemon on the team, while at least the Ivysaur is already teetering on the chopping block anyway, but Squirtle is cool. ...Honestly, though, with all starters being gift Pokemon, kinda makes having them on Gym Leader teams not really needed as far as representation goes. Would maybe prefer to see it show up on the Gym Trainers instead if anywhere, and also any pre-evolutions dropped from the Leader's team, like Staryu from Misty to one of her Trainers. On a huge side-tangent related to this project, one of the really cool details that the Let's Go games did over Yellow is made Misty's Gym Trainers represent her three sisters from the anime. ...Interestingly, the moveset philosophy in that game actually matches the all out offense Smith decided to honor as well, basically being the same as what he picked but not limited to Gen 1 moves.
I like how you make the gyms harder without adding a stupid amount of difficulty. I played another one where fawkner had a jumpluff use power herb solar beam in the first gym.
There's a really cool video about that. Onyx was made as a tutorial boss, not a usable pokemon. Given that the original idea was normal moves were "basic attacks" and elemental moves were "spells/special attacks", Onyx is there to teach you not to spam tackle. Given this is made for fans of the game, it doesn't need to fill that role anymore, of course.
To make grass types not feel so weak in the game, i recommend removing confusion from either Misty's Psyduck or Starmie. Just one of them. By the time you get grass types, they only are good against Misty and Giovanni. And if out of 5 pokemon in Misty's gym, 3 of them have a counter to grass (goldeen's peck), that means grass types will struggle in the one thing they're good at. It may not be much, removing one move from one battle, but it might be enough to make people feel grass types were more useful in their playthrough.
As always, amazing work by Smith and the team - very excited to get to play this version of Yellow when it drops Some minor suggestions I would have for Gym Leader teams are: Misty - Change Goldeen for Horsea, as she also has a Horsea in the anime, and it ties into her Kingdra in Crystal Legacy. Erika - Change Ivysaur for a Butterfree with a STAB flying move. As mentioned by many others, a butterfly aesthetically fits perfectly for her, but it also checks someone looking to run a bug sweep. Koga - If there are dynamic levels for the Gym Leaders, maybe add a Scyther if he's fought 6th/7th? Granted, it's not a poison type but it is very ninja-like with it's speed and sword arms. Avoids him getting swept by grounds/psychics too.
New Solarbeam looks awesome, great change, and when combined with sleep will be brutal. But do we want to remove Vileplumes signature move? Its pretty good and you don't see many signature moves so showcasing them when they appear can be quite good.
I feel like raichu knowing surf goes against the anime since surge famously evolved his pikachu as soon as he got it, but knowing surf implies he raised it as a pikachu for a while
I am very concerned by how overly buffed you made Onix. First off, now its base stat total is higher than Rhydon and Golem. It also is given a new 100% accurate rock throw with stab for 75 BP rock throw while the ONLY pokemon you can have with a rock resist at this stage of the game is Mankey, a pretty frail pokemon. This is going to turn his onix into a Whitney's Miltank situation, but on the first gym leader while players don't yet have access to reliable grass or water type pokemon to exploit its multiple x4 weaknesses. This will be a very brutal fight now. Also its now able to take special hits better than Golem and Rhydon. For Giovonii's team, I think giving his Rhydon Thunderbolt is a total trap. This is because the monstrous 130 attack stab Earthquake or Rockslide will do more dmg than his pathetic 45 special stat thunderbolts. Using either EQ or Rockslide would do more damage against any pokemon, even the insanely high defense with low special defense cloister will take more dmg from the Rockslide than thunderbolt. However with Giovonni having good AI, he will always priortize thunderbolt even when it will do less damage than EQ or Rockslide, such as vs a Starmie. Instead, giving it Substitute or Body Slam (For higher paralysis chance) may be a smarter choice.
Hear me out, but I think Erica should have had a Parasect, it fits her gym style, and its x4 weakness doesn't really change much as you'd most likely be using a flying or fire type in this gym anyway. You then give it Spore, Toxic, Mega drain, and leech-life. This means that it would act like a parasite, slowly ebbing away at your health, and a nightmare to face for non-flying/firetypes as it would continually heal itself and either poison your or put you to sleep. Especially if you put it at a higher level.
Reducing the moves is one way of providing a bit more control of what the AI is going to do too, as in many cases it is picking randomly. If the 3 moves you're giving it are the only 3 it needs, adding another would just give it a chance of using an inferior move, like in the regular Yellow game where Starmie has Bubble which is strictly inferior to Bubblebeam.
Bide wouldn't be such a bad move if it weren't for that random 2-3 turns timeout. I believe in later generations they change it to 2 turns flat, and give it +1 priority. Anyway, it's a shame that the move you get as a reward for defeating a gym is so weak.
Bide is weird. It's hard to use because it's inconsistent like that, but it's hard to face because of the same reason, especially if they outspeed you. You'd have to guess if it's unleashed that turn, and if you guess wrong, then you either did big damage and they just took you out, or you missed your turn to do damage and now they're using bide again. Like Brock's Onix, it seems like Bide was designed to be a boss strategy, and not balanced to be used by the player. It's weird though since it's the first TM in the game.
I wonder what it would feel like if it worked similar to future sight. I also have thoughts in my head of it buffing your defense while the user is “bidding” but that might be too much.
What if Bide was a little like seismic toss? If you don't get attacked at all, it's .5x your level, attacked once is 1x and twice it is 2x. That way it always has a chance to deal at least some damage. It would also remove the need to take more hp damage
You know, adding Ivysaur to Erika and Charizard to Blane, I wished you would have added Squirtle to Misty, just to mimick the Super Smash Bros. Brawl Pokémon Trainer, who had a Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard. :D
So for koga, the reason i think they had so many venonats then the venomoth was to stimulate the venonat getting stronger and evolving mid fight. It was thematic because it was like fighting it until it evolved just like the anime.
I think for Koga and Sabrina, the venonats were supposed to feel like the same mon in different rounds that eventually "evolves" mid battle. For Sabrina, she has an abra that evolves into Kadabra which finally evolves into Alakazam. I think it was a thematic choice.
Starmie is arguably worse, and it's already there in the Base game. The thing about the base stats is that the gap between pokemon with low bst and high bst isn't that large at low levels, only being a difference of 3 to 4 points in a stat. Imo, It really just makes onix an actual pokmeon later in the game. As a side note, it seems oddish and poliwag were added to route before Brock.
@isuckatgaming1873 Imo the point of Onix is for it to be a bulky defensive Pokémon Buffing its HP is definitely the right call and its attack, too, but base 95 speed is overkill for what it is
@@shaunduzstuffs I think I would agree in that case, the 95 base speed isn't necessary for onix's original intention The is some precedent, seeing as it's vanilla base speed is 70 and it also has gen 1 wrap/bind utility, but it does seem unnecessary
Hypothetically, I agree. However, that's why they've been doing balance playthroughs. They want Onix to not be one shot, but if he keeps killing pokemon who are supposed to counter it, then the stats would have been lowered. So, counters like Mankey and poliwag must still be able to kill it more often than not.
I love these changes! They feel so true to the game's vision, with just the right amount of hindsight guiding the decision-making process. I especially love how you consider the lore that the game presents you as both justification and guidance.
An idea, in the anime it says that a gym leader has many teams to match however many badges the challenger has. So what teams would the Kanto gym leaders use against a trainer looking for the 8th badge at their gym?
Great job done. It is going to be amazing mod. My thoughts: 1)I think the biggest problem of Brock is all his pokemons have the same weaknesses, which includes 4xGrass, 4xWater. I would add Diglett with Dig or Zubat with Bite if you want to keep anime vibes. 2)In theory, Surge solo fight seems cool, however many people will have full squad of 6 pokemon and in the end, that will make fight a bit lacking. It would be better give him Electrobuzz, Magnamite and keep Raichu, so if you want, you could easily create opportunity to have Pikachu vs Raichu final fight with full HP. 3)If you want to keep Sabrina's Abra, then maybe give Confusion and Disable as proof of her superb teaching. 4)If you want to give away pokemon's starters to gym leader, then Misty also should also have Squirtle. 5) How about making the final Showdown with Giovanni with 6 Pokemons and add Kangaskhan with Dizzy Punch, Mega Kick, Submission and Hyper Beam?
Regarding Surge, I think it could make sense to add Magnemite and Jolteon, since he has them in _Pokémon Puzzle League,_ which is based off the show. (He actually had a Magneton in that game, but Magnemite doesn't evolve until 30, which would be higher than his ace. 🤷♂️)
@@Blue_EmeraldX Sure. I mentioned Electrobuzz as I think it is a natural pick for Surge. It can learn fighting type moves, so it can fight against rock type pokemons. It prefers more physical approach to fight, so it would fit with Surge ex-soldier.
I’m so pumped for Yellow Legacy! I absolutely loved nuzlocking Crystal Legacy. Live streams and relays have been awesome too to get a sneak under the hood of what you and the team are cooking up!
Even in Blue version I thought Koga's team was weak, why has he got two Koffin's, and why has Agatha got an Arbok? It would have made more sense to give Koga Arbok, and then maybe give Agatha either a Marowak, due to its connection to the ghost type, or a hypno, due to its creepy lore.
5:39 especially since in the anime, they can take creative liberties in making lower stage pokemon more powerful than normal, sometimes even more powerful than their own evolved forms when in the ownership of a strong trainer. the games cannot
Status changing moves are secretly great in Gen 1. Because any stat change reset the bonus that the badges provide. Therefore, the move Flash in a lategame boss battle makes a lot of sense.
I'm playing Kanto Expansion Pak after it was mentioned in the live stream. And while I enjoy it, it really makes me appreciate your minimalistic intuitive design that doesn't require documentation to understand on a fundamental level.
glad you're getting sponsorships now, it's about time! even when we don't agree, your videos are always fun to watch and i'm always happy to see more gen 2 love.
The simple answer is that it's not the midgame at all. Your badges don't accurately measure how close to the end you are, you get badges 5 6 7 and 8 all in quick succession as part of the end-game boss rush. The midgame is the point between SS Anne and Silph Co.
@dontmisunderstand6041 it's not so much that we're supposed to beat the last 4 gyms one after another. The idea is that they are upping the difficulty by forcing us to fight them while being underleveled, since people think Koga was easy with ground and Psychic types. After the path from lavender to Fuschia, the bike path, silph Co, and the fighting dojo, we are only expected to be in the lower 40's. So the issue isn't really the game setting them so high that we can't keep up. The issue is us wanting to catch up in the first place. If we were supposed to match them, then Giovanni wouldn't only be 5 levels higher 3 gyms later.
@@Alienldr No no, you literally are supposed to fight them all back to back. It's literally not possible to NOT fight Sabrina and Giovanni back to back, Koga locks Blaine, and even Koga is scaled above Silph Co, which is the last fight in the game that doesn't either give you a badge or is directly in the way of becoming Champion. They're literally designed to be the last 10 fights of the game. And that's pretty wild considering there are more than 60 mandatory battles in the game. Viewed through that lens, gym 5 is actually 85% of the way to the end of the game.
This video is really awesome. I've had my own ideas for Gen I Romhacking before and I'm so happy someone who has a similar respect for flavor vs. gameplay is finaly doing a big Romhack. That being said, I have a few suggestions: 1. Give Misty's Starmie Confuse Ray or Recover. Confuse Ray would be a great way to give Misty more options while keeping her offensive theme, while Recover would give her a healing option at a point in the game that isn't terribly common. 2. Give Lt. Surge more Pokemon. I know the whole "keep the spirit of the original fight intact" thing, but Surge really needs more than a single mon to even stand a chance against a Nidoking or a Dugtrio, both of which the player has access to at a high level by this point. My reccomendations would be Voltorb and Magnemite, since they can at least do some damage to them with Sonic Boom and offer Thunder Wave support for everything else. 3. Ditch Koga's Golbat for Tentacruel. Coverage in general is honestly super important in Gen I, and STAB Surf would be way better than whatever Golbat can offer. I would also give Sabrina Slowbro and Jynx (which she already had in LGPE) for similar reasons. Ultimately, it's your hack, so do whatever you want. Thanks for hearing me out though. :)
Kind of wish they’d boost Onix’s stats now. I understand not wanting the first gym to be too hard back in the Red/Blue/Yellow days but that doesn’t mean it needs to be weaker than several Pokémon that are no where near as intimidating as a giant rock snake. How does an 8 inch, 4.9 lbs Dedenne have a higher base stat total than 28’10”, 463 lbs Onix? I know the bigger Pokémon isn’t always the strongest but Dedenne, a mouse, has a higher attack stat than a giant rock snake.
Some fun changes in here. Here are some ideas from me~ - The idea of one overlevelled, strong for that point of the game, boss pokemon is really good for the earlier gyms before you have strong pokemon yourself and it might work for Starmie itself. I'd drop one of Misty's mons and raise the Starmie level by 4. Would really encourge you to keep Pikachu with you just so you can Thunder Wave this beast for the rest of your squad to whittle down. - Exeggutor would be a really cool choice for Erika and an early indicator to how dangerous Psychic types are before the Sabrina fight. It gives the player more reason to want to bring a Bug Type to the gym too! - Tentacruel is another cool choice for Koga, that mon lives in the sea right outside his house and its nice special might prevent him getting completely bowled over by anyone using the Psychic TM you just picked up in Saffron. Koga having 5 mons for one of the most repped (and bad) types in the game seems fine to me too. - A stat buff for Magmar would be needed otherwise the 7th gym leaders ace is weaker than the 1st gym leaders ace. The moveset it's using doesn't allow it to use its solid 95 base attack either, which is higher than its base 85 special. I would drop Confuse Ray for a physical move like Body Slam or Submission. Magmar is so frail it can't really afford to be using a turn for a luck based move. Maybe making it the ultimate glass cannon by lowering its terrible defenses further but give it boosts to attack, special and speed is the play? - Normal Type not having a boss rep despite it contesting the Psychic type as the best type in Gen 1 and having a ton of good mons feels wrong. What could be fun is utilizing Giovanni as a Ground AND Normal gym where he can use Persian, his RBY Kangaskhan that mysteriously goes missing, & another fercious looking normal type like Snorlax or Tauros. Normal also encourages the use of a Fighting Type, one of the most neglected types in Gen 1, and Normal types learn a bunch of crazy moves which supports Giovanni having access to all the TM's even more.
Yo. Subscribed! Bless you for making a more proper "Yellow", my generation. The original is both good funky (the characters and all that jazz) and bad funky (what you're mentioning here). Brock/Takeshi's fine. Misty/Kasumi (also known as best leader) is nearly perfect. I like how the sisters' Goldeen is added. If Starmie needs a 4th move, give it either (an average, but standard choice in) Tackle or (a way early) Recover. Surge/Matisse is fine. Erika (who unfortunately uses the element I hate the most to this day in grass), I'm conflicted on. I like how you did say that "Pokemon" is a game first, and you are trying to make grass okay/decent. That typed, Staryu and Pikachu at the time only have 2 form stages while Bellsprout and Oddish have 3, and I'd personally keep Erika at just only the 3 pokemon she used from the start. Keeping the anime forms would please me for the wrong reason (Misty/water > Erika/grass), but sticking w/ them here will make the game release order line go backwards, which we don't want. Oh, if Ivysaur must be kept (seeing that Misty doesn't get a Squirtle or Wartortle), give it Tackle or a better suited normal move for a 4th move to make a dent of some sort on opposing grassy poisons assuming that worse comes to worst for players. Koga/Kyou's fine. Sabrina/Natsume, it's about as good as it gets given the limits. Blaine/Katsura, see Sabrina. Giovanni/Sakaki takes advantage of the TM mechanic, and I love it. I look forward to the Heavenly Four Emperors and Champ fights!
Something to be wary of when giving boss mons Agility in gen 1 is the potential of making Poison/Fighting mons an auto-win. If they don't have a damaging super-effective move for either of those types, and they have gen 1's "good AI," they'll see Agility as a super-effective move and spam it, which will essentially neutralise them. Given that the only other existing AI in gen 1 randomly picks its moves, I'm hoping there's a plan to make better AI for a true new experience.
To be fair about Gen 1 bug types, it is super effective against 34 individual Pokémon, and quad super effective against 11. It's tied for 3rd place with Ground for being at least super effective against the most pokemon in gen 1, under ice (47) and electric (48). And it is quad super effective to the most pokemon in the game. No one noticed back in the day because it was either on Jolteon with its poor attack, beedrill which is outsped and one shot anyway, or it's base 20 power.
I've always had a soft spot for Onix, so I'm glad to see it get more respectable stats. Gonna use it on my team for my first playthrough. I'm really looking forward to what else you have in store for Yellow Legacy!
I'm kind of a Yellow hater, but I'm still really looking forward to this romhack. I'd also just like to voice an opinion that maybe you should rethink working with Hello Fresh in the future. They're well known for treating their workers poorly and are aggressively anti-union.
i lovee this series!! i hope one day you can make a cartridge for the 3ds for the games, it feels better playing on ds then on phone or pc. great job, you are fixing the slight flaws that prevent the games from being a masterpiece.
These look really cool! My only concern is that if you're just alright at the game, will you learn the mechanics well enough to form a good team and be able to put up a fight against these gym leaders? I guess it's up to the game itself to teach you what you need to beat the new and improved gym leaders, and that would require changes to the overworld as well. Still, from a game design perspective, I'm really curious what that would entail. I'd love a potential video on something like that as well!
While I've not looked into your test plays yet to confirm, I do worry buffed Rock Throw being on buffed Onix may be a bit too powerful for a first boss that's supposed to focus on a defensive strategy. We might kinda need a weaker Rock move than that so early in the game if 80 base Strength/95 base Speed Onix is going to have access to STAB. With the Higher HP and Special, Onix should be more than capable of taking a few hits from the limited available counters even Yellow Legacy is likely to have so early. Butterfree is certainly not viable now.
Let's be fair here, I think Koga's Yellow team is actually a pretty substantial upgrade on his Red and Blue team. That team was two Koffing, Weezing, and Muk. It might sound better at first, since it's got two fully-evolved Pokemon rather than one, and Koffing is a little stronger than Venonat, but it's mostly in their movesets. See, Yellow Koga actually knows that TMs exist. All three of his Venonats know Psychic and Toxic. The strongest one knows Double-Edge, and two of them have Sleep Powder. This means that they can actually deal some pretty substantial damage, or just status your team into oblivion, despite their low stats. Meanwhile, Red and Blue Koga has two identical Koffings: they know Sludge, Smokescreen, Tackle, and Smog. Smog has a base power of 20 and 70 accuracy, and even that 40% poison chance isn't gonna save it. Tackle is Tackle. Smokescreen is basically Sand Attack. The only passable move here is Sludge. Muk has Poison Gas, which inflicts poison and has 55% accuracy, Disable, which in Gen 1, chooses the move it disables randomly rather than disabling the last move you used, and also has 55% accuracy, and Sludge and Minimize, which allow it to be slightly annoying. Weezing swaps out Smokescreen and Tackle for Selfdestruct and Toxic--and since he usually sends out Weezing last, that means it's likely that he'll blow up and instantly forfeit the battle. Plus, because his whole team is pure Poison rather than Bug/Poison, that means they're weak to Dig, which is a very powerful move that's easy to get. And he's got no coverage besides Normal and Poison. Haunter absolutely destroys this gym, Graveler doesn't do much worse, and let's not even talk about Psychics. Add in the gap in levels (Yellow Koga is in the mid-40s, Red and Blue Koga is in the high 30s), and you can probably see what I mean.
@@smithplayspokemon I'm assuming that Onix won't be on Bruno's team. I'm assuming that his team will be Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, Machamp, Poliwrath and Primeape. If we're including 6 pokemon then probably give him a Kanghaskan because Kanghaskan (sp) is based on a Kangaroo and Kangaroos love to box.
You do realize Sabrina's team was "abracadabra alakazam" before you changed it, right??? So you had to kill the joke... and thus, making the team worse...
Man, every time I see a video from you about Yellow Legacy I dread that what you do will be too similar to what I'm doing in my ROMhack and make mine redundant, but I think we keep getting the right things the same and also making the right things different.
I cannot even imagine in my head how Pokemon that are one type can even get another type of move. For instance, is Raichu surfing off its spit? Does it find a well in Lt. Surge's gym? How does a squirtle for that matter surf? Unless near a body of water, does it have like unlimited gallons of spit to make a wave on which it surfs on? I never understood that.
I am not sure I fully agree with the Sabrina choices. To me it seems like Abra was designed as bait to trick an opponent they had to only worry about over-leveled damage sponges before getting nuked by the other two. The game design intent seemed more around the intent to using Abra's useless moveset to set up against, thus teaching the player the true benefit of stat boosting moves, as most of us just ya know, punched everything as hard as possible with no finese I would keep Abra as is as the lead and make Sabirina slightly more dangerous and have an NPC in the gym say something like "SABRINA likes to toy with her opponents at the start of her matches. Maybe if your POKEMON could increase their stats during battle would give you a better chance at taking her down when she starts getting serious." As post battle text. It would also be a nice nod to the anime and how welll...kinda pyschotic Sabrina originally seemed and traping her opponents as toys in her doll house to "play" with when they lose.
Man, you have to put a fire TM before you get the Eevee, part of the reason that makes Flareon so awful in comparision with the other eeveelutions is that you don't have a STAB to teach him, like bubblebeam for vaporeon and thunderbolt for jolteon, before level 31, which is Ember
jesus that level boost, after saffron there is not much to do that gives you a lot of exp... some swimmers maybe? this is gonna be very dependant on knowledge, nice stuff.
I'm not sure I like the idea of Blaine having a Charizard with Seismic Toss. I get that it's an anime reference, but it's not Blaine using the Charizard with Seismic Toss in the anime. It feels very bizarre to have on his team even with the reasoning that it's an anime nod. I like most of the other changes though
I don't like the stat changes on Onix. Onix now has more HP and more Attack than Steelix! Just change his movepool and keep Onix's Stats the Same as his Crystal Legacy counterpart! Crystal Legacy won't feel like a "sequel" to Yellow Legacy if You start changing some Pokemon Stats. Its fine to change Pokemon Stats, but at least keep it consistent throughout all Legacy Games.
I don't think you should give Psyduck Bubblebeam since it's sort of her Starmie's signature and might make it redundant and maybe a bit too much on the difficult side. Bubblebeam is a very powerful move at that stage of the game.
Awesome can't wait to see this out. Aside from emerald next and I'm sure finishing crystal, will you be doing a legacy stadium and stadium 2 with better learnsets? If it's possible?
Onix having an effective BST of 540 (475 in Gen 1 terms) feels wrong. 540's already greater than every single fully-evolved starter in the series and its evolution Steelix, while 475 BST puts it in the top 10 of everything in Gen 1. With those stat changes, I think Onix arguably ends up outclassing Rhydon and Golem too. It lands crits far more often than the other two, can trap with Bind, and can still go boom just fine. Keeping its base Speed at 70 (still quite fast for the early game) makes the total a more reasonable 515 (450 in Gen 1 terms), still a touch higher than Steelix's 510. Cutting the Special by 10 I think makes the most sense, this would push Onix down to an effective BST of 495 (440 in Gen 1 terms), which I think is just fine for a Pokemon of extremes like Onix. At that point adjust the rest of its stats around the 495 total, maybe even give it a slight Defense nerf since the total is still quite high for a Gen 1 Pokemon
These all seem really cool! I do wonder if you'd consider also adding a Tauros to Giovanni, it is very strong in Gen 1, arguably one of the best mons, and its design seems like something he would use. I know he already has 5 slots, but with his goal being power, it feels strange to me that he would only use 5/6 slots. Plus, its another Safari Zone mon to replace the Kangaskhan he is no longer using. Also, this isn't related to the leaders, but I wonder if you'd consider taking away one of the Snorlax's and giving it to Blue, he always talks about you lagging behind, so I can't imagine you beat him to the punch on both, maybe have the other disappear after you catch one, and then have an NPC mention that Blue just caught it like 10 minutes ago, so it seems like he's had already caught that one right before you started the battle with yours. Just an idea.
Hey, love the videos & really seem well thought out. Just an observation that you might want to look into (and maybe just my audio settings) but I notice you sometimes mumble or put on a low voice in your narration that makes it hard to make out what you were saying. Otherwise, great video as always!

Considering he's also the leader of a nation-wide crime ring, I doubt he'd have much trouble obtaining them even if he didn't already own them 😂
What makes you even think he paid for them. @@WesM369
Yes it was always weird to me
And outside of Blue, no way to encounter a magmar outside of train
Maybe you could if you made the gym trainer right before the electric fence have one as a psudo-gym leader team before fighting Surge
He doesn't have a magmar in yellow?
Bruh blaines magmar was a complete menace in the anime that's such a missed opportunity
@@hopelessamaturerougeofhope4399Yellow was released before the episode was planned to that part no longer followed the anime
It's a real shame that Electabuzz is just too good for a gym as early as Lt. Surge.
I love the idea of Lt. Surge throwing out a single OP Pokémon and telling you "if you can beat this one, the badge is yours."
then you just bring one of the ground types the game offers before Surge and 1-2 shot the guy ( in OG Yellow )
@@denman2991 "Man, that's really interesting. Sandslash, break his fucking legs."
What I like about these videos is that the justifications presented do make a lot of sense. They are very reasonable.
Really appreciate that! I try my best, so to have that acknowledged really goes a long way!
I always thought that removing Bruno and adding an all normal type E4 member would’ve been good.
Gen 1 had a nice assortment of normal types that were rarely or never encountered.
Yeah, Blue Kaizo has Oak instead of Bruno.
The point is to keep it as close as possible to the original game but changing the things that are lackluster about it, removing an iconic elite four member is the complete opposite of what Smith is trying to accomplish here
@@masterx6883 Well Bruno doesn't pose a real threat in Gen 1 with how bad Fighting type was.
Apparently, Professor Oak is going to have a mono-Normal team.
@@groudonvert7286 He is fixing them, not removing them
Love these changes.
Or a Squirtle since she’s early game. It would then also be all Smash fighters: Squirtle, Ivysaur, Charizard.
So true! Squirtle for Misty, Ivysaur for Erica and Charizard for Blaine. I would love that
All great ideas.
I’m happy these type of videos are back, because I love videos like this.
I'm glad you gave Blaine a Magmar. It never made sense that he didn't have one, considering you can catch one right next door.
Only in Pokemon Blue.
Sabrina sure got stronger now, good thing Caterpie now learns Cut and can easily sweep her 😎
solo caterpie run incoming

I like how you make the gyms harder without adding a stupid amount of difficulty.
I played another one where fawkner had a jumpluff use power herb solar beam in the first gym.
Onix was always a cool pokemon but it was impossible to use because of terrible stats, good job to you for making it useable
As always, amazing work by Smith and the team - very excited to get to play this version of Yellow when it drops
Some minor suggestions I would have for Gym Leader teams are:
Misty - Change Goldeen for Horsea, as she also has a Horsea in the anime, and it ties into her Kingdra in Crystal Legacy.
I feel like raichu knowing surf goes against the anime since surge famously evolved his pikachu as soon as he got it, but knowing surf implies he raised it as a pikachu for a while
But why can’t a Raichu surf if a pikachu can
@@smithplayspokemon it's quite a pudge
Doesn’t the Alolan Raichu kinda surf. Why not
Because it’s not an Alolan Raichu
Pikachu doesn't get surf by level, how much you raise it is irrelevant, lol
Onix deserves it
Hear me out, but I think Erica should have had a Parasect, it fits her gym style, and its x4 weakness doesn't really change much as you'd most likely be using a flying or fire type in this gym anyway.
Kinda weird to have Starmie only have 3 moves when Brock had an Onix with 4 moves
Also, that usage of the P3 Reload tracks. Nice
After using evolution stone pokémon didn't learn new moves on their own in early gens. So it's not THAT weird.
The number isn’t the point. It’s meant to be balanced and only offensive. Another move would give her too much coverage or be redundant
@@dragomanpl1109 Oh yeah, i forgot about that
With only 3 moves it's guaranteed to be more offensive, as the AI has one less bad move to pick.
Please let up rematch the gym leaders. I love doing that.
I think for Koga and Sabrina, the venonats were supposed to feel like the same mon in different rounds that eventually "evolves" mid battle. For Sabrina, she has an abra that evolves into Kadabra which finally evolves into Alakazam. I think it was a thematic choice.
Heh as NOW elite 4 imma just leave it to janine
I can already tell that Onix is definitely too strong for an early game encounter. 80 base attack and 95 base speed is insane for the first gym
@isuckatgaming1873 Imo the point of Onix is for it to be a bulky defensive Pokémon
Buffing its HP is definitely the right call and its attack, too, but base 95 speed is overkill for what it is
@@shaunduzstuffs I think I would agree in that case, the 95 base speed isn't necessary for onix's original intention
The is some precedent, seeing as it's vanilla base speed is 70 and it also has gen 1 wrap/bind utility, but it does seem unnecessary
Yeah, 1st gym is about teaching the player how to play. It isn't supposed to be difficult, that's for the rest of the gyms

My thoughts:
1)I think the biggest problem of Brock is all his pokemons have the same weaknesses, which includes 4xGrass, 4xWater.

I think that Persian should know a Psychic move to really make it tough....
Iirc Persian does not learn any psychic moves in gen 1

why would you let Bruno keep using Onix?
You have enough fighting types to fill his team without onix
Onix is very iconic in Bruno's team, and it gives him coverage against the Flying Type and explain the origin of his Steelix in Crystal Legacy.
surf thunderbolt is absurdly strong this gen in the level 20s. there are very few pokemon with high enough special to survive this other than ivysaur
Status changing moves are secretly great in Gen 1. Because any stat change reset the bonus that the badges provide. Therefore, the move Flash in a lategame boss battle makes a lot of sense.
The Team Rocket casino dealing TMs as prizes should be a strong hint that their boss uses some himself

Love those changes!! You’ve been doing so many great stuff with those projects man
One thing I never understood about Yellow, which you have kept in this mod, is the weird level jump in the mid-game from around 30 to 50
It was always weird. Most games the 8th gen is maybe around 50 or less. But in yellow, the 5th gym is level 50.
There's at least a lot to do in the mid-game. But it is pretty sharp.
That being said, I have a few suggestions:
2: surf
@@basnaspe4578 That's fair. I still think the fight would be more interesting with more Pokemon, but I didn't think of that.
I prefer the old Thumbnail, since that appeared more accurate to the current generation.
A beautifully intergrated sponsor. I wish more channels did it like that. Love the work you're doing on Yellow!

@@intergalactic92 In Crystal Legacy. But otherwise it's Magmar.
i'm really happy about the new feature, i'm sneaking to your file you share with us.
I hope to see very soon the new victory road and E4.
Some fun changes in here. Here are some ideas from me~
- The idea of one overlevelled, strong for that point of the game, boss pokemon is really good for the earlier gyms before you have strong pokemon yourself and it might work for Starmie itself.
Didn’t expect that change to the poison/bug effectiveness, but that honestly makes sense!
I'd love to see vulpix added to Brock's team as a little nod to the anime
I LOVE these type of videos! 💛

Wow. The menu sprites lol awesome. Bravo to whomever had that on their to do list 👏🏻
Misty: "I'm going on an all out offensive."
Me as a kid: "Those *astards lied to me." - meme
Can't wait for this. Crystal legacy was one of the best balanced rom hacks out there.
i lovee this series!! i hope one day you can make a cartridge for the 3ds for the games, it feels better playing on ds then on phone or pc. great job, you are fixing the slight flaws that prevent the games from being a masterpiece.
These teams are great man!
looking foward to see what you will do with the elite four (especially agatha and lance)
all i'll say is this: they're cracked now :)
Seeing how you've given Blaine a Charizard and Erika an Ivysour, I think it would be cool if Misty had a Squirtle.
I think for Brock just give Onix rock throw and give players the opportunity to catch water and grass types beforehand
Man, every time I see a video from you about Yellow Legacy I dread that what you do will be too similar to what I'm doing in my ROMhack and make mine redundant, but I think we keep getting the right things the same and also making the right things different.
What is your obsession with giving Pikachu and Raichu Surf? I get that surfing Pikachu was a thing, but come on!
I really like the Onix buffs! Makes me excited to use it.
Brock's looking kinda scary. Are you adding more early-game encounters that are strong against Brock?
Yea he added a poliwag and i think oddish before first gym.
There’s Poliwag on the same route you find Mankey and Nidoran now
I am not sure I fully agree with the Sabrina choices.
To me it seems like Abra was designed as bait to trick an opponent they had to only worry about over-leveled damage sponges before getting nuked by the other two. The game design intent seemed more around the intent to using Abra's useless moveset to set up against, thus teaching the player the true benefit of stat boosting moves, as most of us just ya know, punched everything as hard as possible with no finese
I would keep Abra as is as the lead and make Sabirina slightly more dangerous and have an NPC in the gym say something like
"SABRINA likes to toy with her opponents at the start of her matches.
Flamethrower tm maybe
Happy Raichu got buffs one of my fav Electric types of gen 1. Also 180 powered Solarbeam is crazy O-O.
jesus that level boost, after saffron there is not much to do that gives you a lot of exp... some swimmers maybe? this is gonna be very dependant on knowledge, nice stuff.
Yay for Raichu seeing love. As a Raichu fan I'm happy it can learn surf too.
So much for anime canon
Surge's Raichu could have had surf in the anime, we don't know. Also it's a nice throw back to Pokemon stadium where his Raichu had surf as well.
What's more unacceptable about Erika not having fully evolved teams, she lives in Celadon City, right near the store that sells the necessary stones!
Okay right!! Thank you!!
"Brock is kinda easy"
*Jrose enters the chat*
I'm not sure I like the idea of Blaine having a Charizard with Seismic Toss. I get that it's an anime reference, but it's not Blaine using the Charizard with Seismic Toss in the anime. It feels very bizarre to have on his team even with the reasoning that it's an anime nod.
I like most of the other changes though
Bro really 'cooked' with Giovanni's team! 💀
who wrote this hello fresh ad script? Its the best one Ive heard.
I’m sorry I’m only to Onix with Brock and Onix was the right level strength for gym 1. Now it outclasses middle stage evos as a first gym
I am so excited for gen 1 gymleaders to finally feel like intimidating matchups
Your Yellow Legacy playlist only has the moves video in it.
Personally, I always thought it was stupid they never had 6 Pokemon.
I need to be better at that! Thanks!
Lt. Surge bringing his one-man army raichu, sick!
