Everyone is talking about him getting it right but I'm just surprised by how close he got with the tone
Finn Demaco EJ's tone is not that difficult, just a variation on a standard Strat tone with more chorus, a slight boost on treble and good amounts of reverb and overdrive (not distortion)
EJs tone is more fuzz than overdrive with a tube screamer and actually there is very little treble, he actually turns his tone knobs all the way down in some performances, I keep my tone knob on my pedals and guitar down quite a way and I get a pretty close tone.
I was going to say, what gives Eric that ribbon-like tone is the fact that he isn't using much treble at all.
eric modifies his strats to add tone control to the bridge pickup that normally just sits at a default bright
Lead used to be an over driven Marshall (treble, presence and bass usually turned down a good bit) w. a Tube Driver or Xotic AC Booster in front + tape delay. Tone on the bridge (.1uF tone cap) rolled back to taste, sans tone on the middle and you're basically there. Oh, and nickel strings to tame brightness even more.
Guitar hero was like the gateway into good music
and a generation of self-entitled "shredmasters"... but for good musical taste, its ok

In 10-15 years, all the kids that played guitar hero and actually started playing real guitar and stuck with it because they were passionate about it, will be amazing guitarists.
Pyrozuki True, but guitar hero has no more to do with why they might become amazing players than grand theft auto does. Someone who played real guitar for a year after playing guitar hero for a year is still just one year into their learning curve.

You are the FIRST person that I've seen play the Main Riff correctly, all of the guitar mags in the 90's had it wrong ! Fantastic ...
after the crescendo and the high pinch harmonic...Guitar World and Guitar School Apr 1997, and Guitar for the Practicing Musician have the Main Riff at the 7th fret G position instead of the 3rd Fret Position,it was like they hadn't seen it on Austin City Limits!
That's true! 90's all of 90's what i've seen. I remember 2003,4,5 one of those I Remember when my bro said IT'S HERE PROPERLY! After high pinch harmonic it was always wrong..or other option it was More wrong in various places.

There's no right or wrong way. It just has to sound the same. A riff (Not this) can be played in lower or higher position of the neck all the same.
Except that EVERY time Eric Johnson plays the Main Riff, it is played at the third fret position"G"...Eric can be seen on the Austin City Limits live video of the song...but HIS way is more difficult because of a rather long stretch depending on your hand size, I have smallish hands and I have to play it at the 8th fret.What I was refering to were the tabs available for the song which are derived from the Chris Amelar tab originally published in Guitar School Sept. 1990 which has been reproduced over and over in other sources such as Guitar Pro etc.
My god, this guitar tone is so beautiful. Just the tone is art in itself, and the playing is sublime.

LOL. I have been subbed to Rick G for a few years now, so thats why the following is funny: I see a random video for a Cliffs of Dover cover thumbnail with some dude on guitar. I'm like "ok sure, lets check this out". 5 seconds in: "nice tone, not bad". 17 seconds in "Oh dang, he's good." By 50 seconds in "man, this dude shreds, who is this?" Looks down and sees its Rick. "Oh....duh."
the same thing happened to me with a very old video of his, back when he had a lot more weight.

Dude, this is incredible. All I can say is you MUST have practiced just this for countless hours. I learned it back in 99 when it was first released and it took ME countless hours just to get it satisfactory and now I can Barely pull it of at all!! SMASHING job,my man!

This song is one of the most unique and well put together peices ever written for guitar, it's like standing under neath a legato waterfall, and Rick does it so perfectly, he does everything perfectly, what a perfect prick, just take a break there are other guitarists on the planet that want to feel as if they don't suck in comparison man ;___;

Another incredible performance by Rick Graham.
His tone, his control, his picking, his attention to details, his ability to mute things down to keep it all under tight control while letting the one string his hitting sing loud and clear, ... effortless ultra fast but smooth picking ,but with attack on each note. It is not even possible. If you knew how hard this song was to play. ...even the main melody does not sound so hard, but in truth it is flying by because of all the little slide effects you have to do on that part. I am blown away.

Nice Cover and tone. I love the timing too, a bit like miles davis (meaning not perfectly in the beat but sorta laid back). It's really hard to get those fast pentatonic runs but you nailed it.
