- A Texas medical center has been studying and leasing out the body parts of unclaimed people without the consent of that person or any survivors. After an NBC News investigation exposed its findings, the center suspended the program, a shocking about face after months of defending its practices. NBC News' Liz Kreutz has the details.

There should be more public outrage. This is dystopian.

Money is nothing without humans.
This is exactly why the European settlers in the USA have no respect for ancestral Native Americans and feel they have a divine right to our ancestral remains they inadvertently find! Native American bodies and bones do not belong in the institutions built off the colonization and genocide of the Ethnic American race!! The USA has no right to anything or anyone before the 1500s, or any indigenous body after it!
@@GuyMyGuiver-d3p That's for sure.
This is why many leaders don't embrace capitalism, it's all about greed

My husband wanted to donate his body to a medical school. He had pancreatic cancer. They told us we wouldn’t get his body or ashes back afterwards.
This really makes me wonder.
I never imagined.
I'm so sorry for your loss. You should have gotten the ashes. You might want to look into why you couldn't get the ashes.
@@leasashaver2263 it’s why i refuse to donate, like, anything. I even tried to get my placentas back from the hospital after giving birth lol. They had “misplaced” them. And then there’s what they do with the foreskins from the baby boys they try to bully you into circumcising…
Different state medical programs have different policies about remains when they are done with studies. In CO the medical school track the cadavers through the whole process, and at the end the classes have a funeral for the person they studied on, with ashes going back to family. Sorry your program doesn't have that, sounds like they support themself selling the parts off.
That was your husband's choice.... VERY DIFFERENT
I thought you had to agree for your body to be used for medical/scientific purposes after death. It seems highly unethical to do that to a body, when there is no prior documentation stating that it’s the individuals wishes. An unclaimed body is still someone’s body and should be treated with respect.
It’s TX. What do you expect?
@@emilyfeagin2673I guess it’s the same as having a late term abortion
It was a practice going back to Burke and Hare, but. with improved means it is expensive ,but doable to ID and obtain family consent.
An industry has grown up around it. Disposal is expensive, and trying to make a buck off the situation is common.
It can be done properly and respectfully, with all the respect and formality that expresses respect.
This looks like a clown show, a desecration by any name. There are Medical Ethics Committees even for osteopaths
If a person is "homeless" at the time of their death, that's when the hospitals give them over to the State. Unless someone intervenes and requests the body or if they give the names and phone numbers of relatives to contact. It's the most horrific insult to a homeless person especially a Veteran. They become a State commodity. It's sickening. I think also the elderly are at risk if they have no living relative to claim them.
Treated with respect like being incinerated? Do you expect the medical examiners office to just hold onto these bodies forever?
This is absolutely disgraceful! My heart goes out to the victims and families.

Don’t be daft. Legally this would classify as desecration of a corpse without express consent; in other words, don’t take something that’s not yours and do something with it that you shouldn’t. Hope that helped you understand.

Those medical people knew what they were doing.
What they used to call grave robbers, basically.
Normally or usually, when a body is unclaimed they do check with DOD or local VA to see if the person is a veteran. I know this because I used to work on the records side of the local VA and we got regular medical records requests for for those coming through the country. This is huge red flag.
How would the VA be able to identify a random dead body?
@@Agtsmirnoff The problem had nothing to do with identifying his body. They knew exactly who he was. I don't know how to process that this video said part of this veteran's body was sold to the army. What does that mean?
@@Gode777They said exactly what it meant, they dismembered his body and shipped the parts all over the world for medical and military research purposes, mostly to make money
@@01SaltyWitch What i mean is how can the selling off of veteran who's name would have been seen by the military -as they purchased his parts- not lead to that military saying stop, a mistake was made?
It's Texas, run by conservatives who care only about one thing - money. Very little they do would surprise me. If you told me they were intentionally killing homeless people for this program I wouldn't be surprised.

@Therealhtrinity ok I kind of agree with you, but that's pure semantics. You're starting an argument with someone who you agree with right? You agree that they are making a good point about veteran treatment in this country being sickening, and that our veterans deserve so much more? Yes, the unclaimed status is irrelevant. Clear Consent is needed. One should also not be able to make money from donations for research or for teaching.

There is definitely a lot more to this story that isn’t being told. Their loved one died and their body went unclaimed. That sentence doesn’t add up. Has no one watching this video had a loved one pass? How could you let your loved one live on the streets and have such little communication with them? I do not agree with profiting off of unclaimed bodies, and I also do not agree with allowing loved ones to die alone.
There’s a very very extensive article that accompanies this report that lays out several instances of this occurring and the reasons families lost track of or couldn’t locate them, such as mental illness or poor record keeping. Very shocking.
@@jescan4 I have family members with mental illness and keep in touch with them. I don’t see how you could let this happen to your loved one and sadly I think that’s why any claim would not hold up in court. Could you provide the link to the article?

He was homeless and none of his family had heard from him in 2 years and nobody tried to find him? Sad for sure, but families must do better to keep up with their loved ones. Especially those suffering from mental illness. This should have never happened
You don't knew anything about him or how he treated his family though.
You didn't watch the video. They said they had visited him a few months prior in the hospital.
Aweful
So gross! There are plenty of people who are willing to donate their bodies or a relative's body. They should not take bodies in this way.
This is terrible. This is beyond an organ donor. Family needs to be compensated.
That is horrible I would be so mad they need to be held accountable for there actions.
The fraud in this country is bizarre. Why do this to people's loved ones without their consent or approval of their families.
I pray all the families affected by this get justice.
Wow, this is so shocking. And to think they're making money off this is even more disgusting.
The key statement: "NBC found me in a day."
Which means Dallas or Tarrant County didn't look hard enough - or at all.
I dont believe for one second they couldn't find his family. Stop paying your student loans, your taxes or your mortgage and see how fast someone finds you.
They do the same with aborted babies.
No, they don't. Quit trying to spread your propaganda.
This needs to be investigated around United States because there’s too many missing body parts and organs taken from the deceased bodies
And who else is doing this
The factthst he was homeless and the family didnt know he was dead for weeks. Shows they didn't have a strong relationship with him. I hope theres a lawsuit and the money goes to a homeless vetran charity.
Ghoulish.
First and foremost this is 100% illegal. In no way, shape, or form can any body be used for medical purposes, limb or organ donations or sold without consent from the individual prior to death or the family members. You can’t take a John Doe or Jane Doe and use their bodies. This man served our country, and was not lost by family. I’m extremely shocked to hear this. Especially as a Dallas resident. The homeless community has been rapidly growing with almost little no help for the homeless. Our country is undoubtedly, astronomically failing us.
Every cent made by these awful agencies should be awarded to their families. Absolutely disgusting behavior from the Medical School
Ahh this is sick! So sad such a shame
We need a healthcare system that we can all trust. Unethical and dehumanizing practices have consequences. Doctors are being taught that their education is more important than people's rights, and then we feel that in exam rooms. It's like the unauthorized pelvic exams.
Shady
Absolutely disgraceful! So is it a crime for people to move around? Just because someone is unclaimed, it doesn’t give anyone the right to profit off of them. There definitely needs to be some accountability and legal recourse!
Who’s surprised that this happens in TX?
After the ‘Lease’ agreement has ended, do they ship that body part back to the medical center for burial or is it thrown out like garbage? Isn’t it against the law to mutilate a corpse?
Absolutely horrendous
His family was there, but not right there. They were not there enough to provide a roof for him to sleep under. They were not there enough to claim his body after death. Now they are there, with a lawyer.
That doesn't negate the fact that his body parts were SOLD by wicked monsters
Great reporting!! Thank you for uncovering this atrocity!!😔
Pure evil. Help us Lord. Bring justice for these people and their families.
Mystery Babylon.
So when is the family going to sue them?

What is stopping a hospital from just letting you die than so they can use your body for research?
Why is the ex-wife doing this interview? The kids they have are grown.
This is so DISGUSTING and DISRESPECTFUL!

The news said he died alone on the streets. Then the newss said His "family" lives in the same city. His family left him on the streets to die and now they are upset ?
Now they want justice? They didn't seem to care at all when he was alive.
