  • UT Extension Agent Chris Cooper and Mike Dennison show how to use a soil drench to treat Crape Myrtle Bark Scale. The plant they are treating is covered with the scale. First, they discuss the history of the crape myrtle bark scale in the United States. They are using the systemic insecticide imidacloprid. They measure the circumference of each stem at the four-foot height and after doing some math they mix the imidacloprid concentrate in a gallon of water and pour it on the ground around the crape myrtle. It may take several months for the imidacloprid to start killing the scale, but it will be effective for about one year after application.

Looks like you used 3.1416 times the required insecticide since you measured circumference rather than diameter. Like you said, “it’s the law.”

diameter is distance thru center. distance around is circumference.

Would it be possible to get an update video on these trees? Super helpful video, thanks!

Thanks for the question. This video is a few years later and about a different subject, but is the same tree: ua-cam.com/video/lJA2qc9Z-L0/v-deo.html. Since the treatment took effect the Crape Myrtles have been scale free.

Yes you said diameter, you are measuring circumference. As well as reading directions you need to interpret the directions.

We have had dozens of crapes for several decades now…. never notice scale bark issues on any. however this year one of our newer/smaller crapes does have bark scale really heavily. I’m thinking nature will take care of itself… people way over-react in todays world to stuff like this! Old timers didn’t do all these things 60-70+ years ago and stuff survived. Todays world is driven by $$$$$$ and selling you some remedy!

That looked like more than one gallon of water in that bucket.

Guess if your on City water this is better than if you are on a well! I would never pour insecticides into my ground anywhere near my well. also since we have 26 crape myrtles no way I ‘m treating via this method!

I just noticed we have 2 trees with a good amount of the white stuff on the limbs/branches and the leaves are turning a yellowish brownish color. Can I treat the tree now or do I have to wait until late winter? Would a neem treatment work?

You can treat now with imidicloprid if you would like. It is late in the year and the imidicloprid drench works for 12 months so you might want to wait until late winter to get the most bang for your buck and protect for the whole growing season. Neem will not work now because the scale is in its protective shell so the neem could not reach it. There is an excellent publication from Clemson Extension here: hgic.clemson.edu/factsheet/crapemyrtle-bark-scale/ It outlines several methods for control. It recommends Dinotefuran, which is another systemic soil drench. Imidicloprid or Dinotefuran will work and either will kill the scale..

@@FamilyPlotGarden Thank you for this! You don't think I'll lose the trees if I don't treat now and wait until late winter? I have dogs that go all around the trees, do you know if either the Imidicloprid or Dinotefuran are safer/more natural?

I only have one crape myrtle that's affected, so far and it's a short enough plant that I can hold the branch tips with one hand and use the "jet" sprayer on my hose to blast all those critters off the length of the stem on all sides in just a few minutes. I've been doing this just a few times in a season and having good luck with that. I've never seen this on any of my other crape myrtles - only the most recent one with purple-black foliage. I hate pesticides and herbicides, but I will resort to them if I have to.

how many gallons? You say "one gallon" and my label instructions say one gallon

3 ounces of pesticide per foot of tree

That looks like an excessive amount of pesticide material being used on one tree. After doing this application, You'll barely have enough material remaining to treat another tree. Something seems totally wrong here.
