    Quiet luxury is more trendy, old money more vintage, therefore I like old money more but both styles are good.

    Very good video discussion. Old mony seems to me to be an awareness of tradition, upbringing and good manners. New money has an excitement factor with possibilities always quite open, especially colors, patterns and combinations. Nothing to get hung up about either way. Personal style evolves.

    Good video, as always. I feel like 'old money' is rather a lifestyle or a representation of 'real old money'. Ultimately, a more elegant way to present yourself than with flashy logos. Quiet Luxury, on the other hand, is much more an attitude, or a statement, against the consumption of fast fashion and a celebration of good products.

      Great to hear that you want to dress classy. How is the second hand market in Sweden? There must be lots of great vintage pieces I assume?

      @@Lukas_Schanderl Hey again Lukas!
      In Stockholm where I live you can find a bunch of second hand stores with lots of classy pieces! I was actually in a store yesterday and found a Loro Piana jacket for around 1800 EUR instead of 5000+ EUR which was the retail price. Ofcource thats still very expensive and I can't justify buying something like that so I didn't buy it but it's great knowing that you can get some nice deals out there!
      Also, I have a video suggestion! Since I'm young. Would you every consider making a video about how younger people like ages 15-25 can stand out of the masses and dress more mature but still not be looking too out of place since we are in our youth. Maybe this was a strange idea but I know many of my friends who are 18-19 struggle with dressing up more classy cause they always feel like older men when they try to. So to put it simply: How do teens and young adults dress classy without losing our youthful vibe? Thanks //Nicklas

    Very interesting- thank you for sharing these insights! I tend to think more about the similarities between the two phrases, but there are clear differences that I knew but hadn't processed really. I tend to a blend of the two in what I consider to be "understated classic menswear". I'm a bit more formal than quiet luxury, but tend to do less colour and pattern than old money. So I sit somewhere in between :).

      @@Lukas_Schanderl Thank you! My style certainly works for me- I think the main thing is to find things that work for you and your life, and build your style from that. I also think your style evolves over time. And mine is understated so I'm not drawing a lot of attention to myself (I'm a comms person, so my job is to make other people shine, not myself), but is also professional and classic enough for my work which can often be in UN or other high level meetings. It needs to be able to work for visits to refugee camps and humanitarian responses, too. So quite the range :).

      @Lukas_Schanderl  11 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for elaborating.
      Sounds like you found the right balance :)
      I totally agree. It would be nice to be always dressed up, but it's not always the most practical choice, like in your case the refugee camps or even on a smaller level, when I need to go to a bad part of town and I don't want to stand out too much :D

    • @SimonChambers
      @SimonChambers 11 місяців тому +1

      @@Lukas_Schanderl I agree. I prefer to be dressed more nicely, but I always try to dress appropriately, and that means wearing different things than my preference at times. Even when I'm not travelling for work, there are plenty of times that I'm dressed much more casually than I would choose because it's what's appropriate for the situation I will be in, whether that's doing housework, exercising, or going out with friends who will all be in t-shirts and jeans, and a suit and tie would be wildly different. :)

  • @Dennis-vh8tz

    A lot of quiet luxury looks are essentially elevated athleisure, more fitted and less baggy, and made from conspicuously expensive materials, for example: cashmere track suits. Old money is a little more formal, more business or business casual attire, and covers fabrics which may be expensive today but were once worn across social classes, for example: a tweed sport coat. Individual Preppy and Ivy items tend to work well in an old money look, but a full Preppy or Ivy look is more traditional or classic menswear than Old Money. The former are what old money wore in the past, while Old Money style is what you would imagine old money people wearing today - think billionaires and nobility at the Monaco Yacht Show.

  • @ABC-rh7zc
    @ABC-rh7zc 11 місяців тому +4

    The main divergence of the old money look seems to keep coming back to the more colourful preppy look. If you categorized the preppy look separately then it seems the differences between OM and QL would be minimal. It would also be interesting to look at proportions and design elements such as waist height on trousers., lapel styles, pleats, etc.

    • @Lukas_Schanderl

      The preppy look seems to be a bit of an outlier.
      Good idea to add more metrics like lapel style, trouser height etc.

    I think what many get wrong about old money is not talking about vintage pieces, clothing would have been handed down (think worn in Oxford shirts and Shetland sweaters)
    whereas quiet luxury HAS to be expensive from high end brands, can you imitate it with Uniqlo and other cheaper brands , yes, but that is not luxury.

    • @Lukas_Schanderl
      @Lukas_Schanderl  11 місяців тому +1

    In America, preppy and Ivy League looks are the same thing. Ivy is just a subset of preppy. Also, the colors one sees in mens preppy looks were often associated with their schools, colleges, or family traditions.

    Because my style taste as been mostly formed from shopping at Brooks Brothers, I often dress in a more preppy/ivy style manner. Now that I am doctoral student in Belgium I'm interested in incorporating elements of French Ivy. If you have any tips on French Ivy, I would enjoy hearing them. Where "Old Money Styles" seems to diverge from preppy/ivy styles is during warm weather. I wear some linen but I prefer seersucker, madras, and other clothing made from cotton in pastel colors. "Old money" isn't just about clothes without logos. It is an attitude passed to the next generation. The way you behave while you dine, talk, your values, and desire to know others' cultures without visiting their malls. You don't need to be born in a wealthy family to have that. This kind of behavior is rare nowadays. That's why wealth is quiet, rich is loud, and poor is flashy.
