  • What are the results of the 2020 US Census and what does it mean for the United States of America? In today's video, we're going to be looking at the US Census and some of the strange categorizations they have for race and ethnicity and why they are archaic relics of the past and how they can be improved in my opinion. We will also be going over my personal estimation for the country with these new and improved criteria. Thanks for watching!

The Brazilian census is more accurated. That's more based by the phenotype than the ancestry, when white include the caucasians (europeans/Syrian/Lebanese), blacks include all africans of dark skin, native american (red skin), asians include mongoloids (East/Southeast asia) and the brown people (mixed race by white, black and amerindian).
I'm white-asian mixed, but I'm considered only asian because of the phenotype

Moroccans are basically the ancient Berber endogenous population of north Africa who has been Arabized from Islam conquest until modern independence nationalism. They are similar to middle easterns but with more African traits like darker skin abd curly hair. There ofcourse other influences from Turkey and Europe. In my opinion as a middle eastern, North Africans are genetically and phenotypically distinct from middle easterns. Both North Africans and middle eastern are not white but their own category.

THANK YOU! I'm Latino and I definitely agree. When regarding ethnic legal information, it's really difficult and annoying when filling out paperwork because we're so uniquely different and complex even WITHIN our own group. I always knew we're ethinicly different and later discovered why (Iberian & native) but because of that, what the hell are we supposed to pick? And sometimes in paperwork, we're literally only forced to pick between: White, Black, Asian, Mixed or other. It's so maddening because picking white almost dishonors our own native heritage and some of Latinos like my brother who's father is literally a Nahua Native but our mother is the typical mixed latino was confused too. Hell, you probably would think he's simply native american when you meet him. And we're obviously not white because actual white people as Latinos in america never forget to remind us why we're not. But I used to pick "white" during high school begrudgingly. Now I choose "other" or "mixed." But since you gave me the idea of selecting BOTH, I'm doing that...lol! Thanks, masaman. I literally already gave my entire family a long story why they we SHOULDN'T be selecting white, they left a little annoyed but intrigued and agreed...lol!

Serbs and other ethnicities from the Balkans that have a slavic background have a problem with US census when it comes to territory.A lot of people (300,000)still say that they are from Yugoslavia, around 190,000 of people say that they are serbs, and then around 400,000 said that they speak serbian in their household. And then there is a problem with territorial ethnicities,a lot of Serbs that originate from Croatia will say that they came from Croatia which places them under the Croat ethnicity, when that is not the case.

Under the US census, Arabs are considered white, although there are some people who want Arabs to have their own category, but that isn't happening with this census. Historically, the lion's share of Arab immigrants to the US came from Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine, and a lot of Arabs from that region look very similar to Greeks, Italians and Spaniards. Here in Michigan, we have probably the largest Arab community in the country. And based on my own personal experiences, a lot of the Middle Easterners I've encountered look eerily similar to Europeans from other Mediterranean countries.
Also, this is the first census where Whites can actually write down their ancestries. So based on your comment, it would be interesting to see if more people with Yugoslav ancestry identify as Serb.

@@ElTigre12024 The "Arabs" from that region are mostly descended from non-Arab-Semitic groups as well as Indo-European groups. Which are Caucasians anyways (In the racial, not regional sense).
I dont know the degree to which Crusader era and Roman era and Hellenic era settlement have affected those populations.
Turkey, Persia and the Southern Caucasus region btw, which are right next door are largely Indo-European.
The middle east and North Afica are largely of the same racial/ancestral background as Europe, there is just a lot of variation in traits, that are more common in some regions over others.
I've known 2 Turks, one had blond hair and blue eyes, the other brown hair and eyes. I've known 2 Syriacs one with blond hair and green eyes, the other black hair and brown eyes. I've known a Mizrahi(Middle Eastern/North African) Jew with brown hair that is European in appearance, I've known a Sephardic(Iberian) Jew whose family moved to the middle east and later France, with brown hair that is European in appearance.
There is diversity of phenotype within national groups and across regions but in the end, Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and even into parts of Central and South Asia are Caucasian.

The Native American aspect of the United States census mainly relates to how much money should be allocated to programs targeted toward Native American tribes recognized by the federal government and their members since the U.S. Supreme Court declared "constitutional supremacy" over many Native American affairs within the U.S. and its territories. People declaring Native American ethnicity while not having any relationship to any federally recognized tribe only inflates those numbers since the U.S. government doesn't regulate nor provide benefits for tribes and their members not recognized by the U.S. government inside or outside its borders.

I don't think much of his data would be applicable, though. The U.S. Census does not measure genetic ratios; it never has. It's always been more concerned with race and ethnicity as social categories rather than scientific ones. The only three categories on the original 1790 U.S. Census were White, Black (which included anyone with even a single African ancestor), and Indian. Obviously American culture has now become a lot more complex than that, but we still tend to think along those lines. Actually, I'm starting to think that the Census should question us about religion and/or political affiliation rather than race or ethnicity; that data, I think, would be much more useful in determining Americans' social attitudes.

I would definitely say my ancestry is multiracial Latino, as opposed to having any definitive mixture, or standalone ancestry. I am Puerto Rican, and like most Hispanic people I am European, Native American, and Sub Saharan African. Like being Latino is great and all I love it but it’s not a race, and it really just annoys me how people think that it is a race. We are a cultural group and a very diverse one at that, there are East Asian Hispanics, there are Middle Eastern Hispanics, like I could list every group of people and you could find them living their best spicy life speaking Spanish, and most importantly there are White Hispanics. And the reason that White Hispanics and Mixed Whites aswell are pushed out of Whiteness is because we don’t fit what is means to be seen as White in an Americanized sense. Just how Italian Americans and Irish Americans were pushed out of what it meant to be White back in the early 1900s and those ideas still exist today. It is so different in our own countries compared to America, like over here even though I am mostly White and being Hispanic is not a race people think my race is Latino and somehow my White DNA doesn’t exist. Meanwhile in Hispanic countries your Whitness supersedes everything else, it’s interesting honestly since race is such an arbitrary concept yet people put such importance on it. At the end of the day whether you are Mexican, Filipino, Puerto Rican like me, Dominicano, Argentinian, Colombian whatever type of Latino you are not only does that matter more than being seen as White or Black or Native American or Asian or whatever, but the United States’ flawed concept and race does not define us or erase the uniqueness in each and every one of our cultures

I also wanted to make a long comment. All the US census categories make NO sense, because they’re vague, and have no real consistency. The one drop rules, the “white is the default and anyone with other ancestry is to be identified with said ancestry”, and the unnecessary grouping of a vast number of ethnicities into one category (like with indigenous North Americans), all of that stuff has to be changed. The census needs to be based on real ethnicity and ancestry, not what someone simply “identifies as”. We can’t have “black, white” those terms are just vague and inconsistent. Better go by ethnicity, like German, Italian, Liberian, Nigerian, Cajun. Somehow even the old Spanish caste system is more useful that this (and it was meant to be oppressive).

They were going to make a MENA category for the 2020 census, but it just fell through. Most of these people don’t feel white, they feel like something other than white, especially the millions of muslims and jews in this part of the world. Most of them don’t really look “white” either. I’m Ashkenazi Jewish and I think it’s insulting that you would not consider me white. No one has ever thought I was anything other than white. My family has been identifying as white on Census forms for over 100 years. Race is a broad category that indicates obvious visual differences. It’s very easy to tell the difference between a black and a white. I can always tell if a stranger is white (like me), but I can’t always tell if a stranger is Ashkenazi Jewish. Jews are not physically distinct enough to be a race of their own. Also, the cultural differences are not so big either. Don’t assume that every American of Jewish descent lives an Orthodox Jewish lifestyle. Plenty of us live the exact same lifestyle as non-religious people from a Christian background.
If I ever saw a Census that had a “Jewish” racial category like you suggest, I would still check “white,” because I don’t believe “Jewish” is a race.

I think people should have to choose what culture they identify with instead of race, because your race doesn't always dictate your culture or your personal experience. People are more likely to make decisions based on culture rather than race. Race is simply too fluid because most people are of a mixed heritage/bloodline, and you can't always assume race by how someone looks. However, in the United States, regardless of what "race" you are, people will always assume based on how you "look" and what "color" your skin is. I understand the need for the Census, however, it is also a problematic way of classifying people.
