Gary Thain was a fantastic bass player who sadly left us way too soon. The whole band really gelled together and really brought out the best in each other when they played together which became the classic era of the band. It is certainly a cracking live album and one of my all time favourite albums. Great memories Phil.
Heep live 73 we teenagers at the time, we used to listen to that beautiful album after school and we would party on school nights. Can't get that back.
I was a huge fan of Uriah Heep after buying The Magician's Birthday. Then I bought Demon and Wizards which was even better! I never bought this live album as I never had the money for it but I've heard it since and it is an excellent live album. I gave up on the band after High n' Mighty but I know they have put out some great music since and Mick Box is one of the greats!
Uriah Heep Live 1973 is an Epic live album. At the time, I could not stop listening to it. David Byron and Gary Thing were the foundation of this live Epic Album, which still has a special place in my music journey in 2025!
Evening Phil, affectionately known has Friday night in Birmingham I saw Heep on this tour and once I saw them I never looked back, have I’ve said before it was Gary Thain that made me want to play bass this is a brilliant live album with the classic line up thanks for reviewing it Phil it deserves to be mentioned has one of the greatest live albums of all time.
Uriah Heep especially the original lineup was my favorite and this Live album from 1973 is really great thanks for showing this and seeing the photos inside the album was awesome thank you Phil.👍👍 🎶🎤🎸🎸🎹🥁🎶
Congratulations. A wonderful review and description of the essence that perfectly captures the appeal of UH. The mixture of first-class songwriting, passion with pure power, emotion, fantasic singing, rousing drama is hard to resist. Phil Aston is one of the best ambassadors when it comes to pure rock music and an extremely likeable professional.
Maaaaate! Like you, I bought this when about 13 when it came out - at the time Deep Purple's Made in Japan was all the rage (in Australia), but after hearing the single "Easy Living" on the radio and seeing a video clip of the same song on the telly (GTK on the ABC for those locals) I HAD to get UH Live, and was totally awestruck. My other favourite live albums I bought at the time, saving up every cent of my chores money at the time: Cream Live Vol2, The Who Live at Leeds, ELP's epic 3-record Welcome Back My Friends, and the mind-blowing Space Ritual (Hawkwind) - I feel blessed to have those first edition albums in my collection. UH generated an amazing rich sound on this recording. Still got the booklet too! I used to use the Rock n Roll medley on party tapes when I was at Uni 'cause it was much better than playing the originals. All this time, I've never known any friends who even liked UH let alone have a copy of the Live album. It was great to run into your video and read the other Comments, and find I'm not alone anynore!!!!! LOL
Love this album. It often finds its way into my car CD player for those long trips. Gary Thain and Trevor Bolder are two of those bassists that I'm always listening out for when I play an album.
“Friday Night In Birmingham” as Byron says. This was my first exposure to Heep as well, aged 14. Fell in love with “Sweet Lorraine” and loved the whole album! Thank you for the great memories!
Hi Phil, I saw Heep three times in 1972 in Jacksonville, Florida: Feb, July, Dec. During the Wonderworld tour, I was able to meet all of them at a hotel lounge and got their autographs. 1970-1978 was quite a run, never to be duplicated. Cheers, Pat
My Aunt talked about knowing Gary Thain as a youngster in Christchurch, NZ. I also remember my brother bringing this album home from a second hand shop in the 80s. Super talented band all round. They don’t get enough credit.
Never forgotten this album, saw them on that tour at the old Liverpool Stadium, front row seats with my two best mates sadly no longer with us. Amazing band, amazing live album, dare I say even better than Made in Japan😮
I was at that concert in Birmingham Town Hall, I bought the album as soon as it was released (£2.50 I think) it really captures the night completely, a concert I will never forget.
"I got some chewing gum on me boot and I keep sticking to the stage". I love this album, I need to get the lp again. I have a cd copy but it's missing the medley on the end. Thanks Phil'
Enjoyed your review. I was introduced to Heep by a friend in school who brought in a cassette tape of the Magicians Birthday and we played on my portable cassette player during breaks. It was the spring of 1973. I was immediately a fan and they became my band. That summer I invested in both Demons and Wizards and the Live 73 album. Played them to death. Then in November 1973, at the age of 16 went on my own on the train from North Wales to Liverpool to see them live at the Stadium. It blew my mind. The volume was amazing, my ears rang for weeks after. I remained a Heep fan right up to High and Mighty , when I gave up on them. Years later I still play their stuff from time to time , owning all the cd's from the 70's, except High and Mighty. I have listened to all their stuff on UA-cam, but none of the later stuff appeals, except the Sea Of Light and Spellbinder albums of about 20 years ago, which I bought.
GRANDISSIMI.
i fell in love with this album before i dropped the needle. looking at the pages inside the printed lp sleeves with all the reviews and articles. mick box absolutely shreds! when David shouts out" fooor an enemy "! on circle of hands the hair on my arms still stands up. it is my top live lps amongst who ,leeds. deep purple, live in japan, grand funk ,live album. cheers.
I saw Uriah Heep in concert in autumn '82 and got that live album a few months later in '83. I remember the album as a pretty accurate representation of their sound on that tour, and for me it's always been like a souvenir of the concert.
Hello from Canada. I've been a Heep fan since I was 6...I'm now 54. I have been playing bass for over 40 years. Gary Thain has been one of my biggest influences...and still is. I simply love his style...his open E boom after lovely melodies in the upper range...beautiful (listen to studio Sunrise). I believe it was Ken (RIP) who said that everyone who hears Gary's playing falls in love with that playing (or something like that lol). So true. Its wonderful that Heep are being included now with the Big 3. RIP Gary Thain. Never forgotten, always loved. Love your channel my friend. Canada Proud. The Great White North.
I don't know much about Kerslake's history with Heep but I was introduced to him through the Ozzy albums. The best move Ozzy's camp ever made for his rhythm section was bringing in Lee and Bob...everything about that band was perfect for just two albums.
Purchased this wonderful live album in 1973 and along with MiJ …these two were constantly on my record player back in the day …I actually feel this is Heep’s greatest album
Uriah Heep was the first band I saw live in the early 70s, and as a young bass player, Gary Thain was my hero. I've played this album many times, but watching this has just made me want to go and play the whole album again
Phil thank you thank you for this review of this great live album I also owed it at 14 years old and this revue’s dead on 100% my thoughts to the tee I saw on the same bill at Anaheim stadium in California Kiss ,Bob Seager Ted nugent ,and uirah heep, what a show that was all on the same bill in 1976 kiss the spirt of America tour this review brought back those memories and the passion for this LP a spot on review no fan of this LP can say enough about it I hope you get into more reviews of classic live LP’s from the 1970’s like the grand funk live LP ( would love to hear your take on that classic live LP the humble pie rocking the Fillmore and other classics you can get the passion in your voice in these classic LP’s and what they meant to you please keep them coming and let’s see some more classic live LP’s because these live LP’s for most are the entry point of bands we heard in the 1970’s fantastic review 100 stars thank you and have a happy thanksgiving to you and your family and may god bless -- Anthony ( queens NYC) today will be a thanks for giving this to in from uirah heep I will listen to this on thanksgiving today thanks for the memories Phil I just with the wizard would have been on this LP to top it off
Phil, ah what memories. A Bostin album from a great band. Just promoted it on my playlist and will listen again to it next. An absolute classic from a friday night in Birmingham. Kind regards
Watching this on silent as it's 6.24am. The written text has Mick Box as "MC Box" and the band as "Urinal Creep"! So I'm laughing and likely to wake the household up despite best efforts to be quiet.😅 Thanks, Phil - great review. Uriah Heep Live must've been compared mainly with Made in Japan in '73, especially as Song Remains the Same wasn't put out until '76, with Lizzy's and UFO's live doubles even later in the decade. By coincidence, Rainbow's in '77 featured Jimmy Bain - and his name is very similar to Gary Thain... Have a real urge to listen to the album after this video. Like the comparisons between Lee Kerslake and Simon Kirke. Your point about Purple and Heep is good: Jon Lord and Ian Paice were exceptional virtuosos with no other "duties" onstage, whereas Ken Hensley and Lee Kerslake were also singers (and a guitarist in KH's case). The two bands were/are very different, with the 5-piece line-up the greatest similarity. But both July Morning and Child in Time have had a global impact, both songs having been adopted as anthems for freedom. Who would've predicted that?
Yes, very unique side one, how it flows from one song to the other like the whole side was just the perfect combination to open the show. Lee Kerslakes drum solo on Gypsy is too this day one of few drum solo's that is not boring. And like ohn Magician's Birthday is an actual part of the song. I was in 7th grade when it came out it was just like a book with 2 live albums that were perfect.
Thanks for the primer. There are many bands I didn't get into or just passed me by. Uriah Heep was one of those. They did not have much of an impact here in the pacific northwest u.s. when I was first buying records (late 70's early 80's). My girlfriend at the time had 'Fallen Angel'. Columbia House sent it to her. Coincidently she resembled the cover art, except in green corduroy overalls. Did not find out until much later, that was not the best album to get introduced to their music. Thank you for your thoughts. I will give it a listen. 😎👍
Oh dear. Phil I’m afraid we can’t be friends anymore. I’ve been a drummer for almost 30 years and you saying you don’t like drum solos! Woe is me, twas like a knife to the heart! 🤣😂 Great video as always. 🙂🤘
Hi Phil really enjoyed your Uriah heap live I still have my original copy on vynal an also got it for Xmas love the heep since I first saw them on look at your self tour 👍 really took me back
I haven't forgot about this album. It's been in my top ten of live albums since I bought it, which was when it came out. But I hadn't seen the inside of the album for quite a while. I liked your presentation here.
This live is a classic. Remember buying it when it come out 1973. Still have the same album to this day. Another live classics is Humble Pie "live at fillmore east" & Grand Funk "live album". Love all of these.
It is a really great album. Being born in the 60’s I had some Uriah Heep albums. But I didn’t get this until in the 2000’s. I totally agree the bass playing on it is fantastic!
Superb, one of my favourite live albums. I bought this when it came out and I saw Uriah Heep several times in the 70's. I think the first time was at Guildford Civic Hall in 1972.....I was 15 years old......wow, long time ago, I had just left school. I played this album a lot. July Morning is one of my favourite songs on this album. Thank you for this review Phil, took me way back, great times!
Thanks for another recommendation for an album I missed the first time around. Will be checking it out on Qobuz this long weekend. Thanks and happy thanksgiving to all who celebrate!
Like so many this was my first Uriah Heep album and is still my favourite. Have never tired of listening to it. My vinyl copy is well worn now but I still play it. Nice to hear you mention Gary Thain and how his bass stands out in the mix. Definitely a classic live double album from that era. Your enthusiasm is very infectious Phil. Thank you.
Thanks Phil, you took me back some 50 years. I was drawn to this album while thumbing through records at Reddington Rare Records in Birmingham (circa 1975). I think the fact that it had been recorded in Brum made it more attractive. I purchased it really cheap not knowing anything about the music it contained. It looked classy, and I was not disappointed. It's still in my top three live albums. It's solid and for its time, sonically brilliant. Cheers.
Hi from Oklahoma, Phil. That Irish Heep album does rock for sure. I have the vinyl that I bought in Germany in 1974 or 5. You probably know this. Check out Wishbone Ash Live Dates and Rory Gallagher with the Irish Tour 1974 that both get played weekly by me. Both in vinyl. So good. Liking your channel buddy.
I like you got this album for Xmas one of the last with my Father my uk copy is now warped on disc 1 but I also have a copy included in a box st I found at a hospice shop in Ipswich and had it posted to Brisbane. I think I will have to play it tonight while unpacking stock I did see a version of the Heep in Sydney many years ago
Thank you, Phil, I am one of those people you spoke of in the beginning of this video & I am heading to a record expo this weekend & this is now on the top of my list to hunt down. That is why I love your channel
Great review. Heep's current bassist, Davey Rimmer is indeed of the same vain as GaryThain. He plays with the same fills and imagination as Gary did. Heep's last 4 releases are some of the best music since the early 70's.
one of many live albums Humble Pie Performance Rockin' The Fillmore, Robin Trower Live Ten Years After Recorded Live Lynyrd Skynyrd One more for'from the road UFO Strangers in the Night the massive 8 disc set Frank Marino live just to add some more killer live records
Yeah my introduction to this album came from my old mate and neighbour. Being an only child he had loads of 45s and albums on birthdays and Xmas. I.e I had a £1 record voucher for Xmas he had a tenner!. Totally agree Phil I def worked outwards from this album once I owned it and def had Magicians next. Glad you have brought to the forefront Gary Thain - absolute legendary bassist…
Really enjoyed your enthusiasm on this video. My love of Uriah Heep involves the first American album. It differs from the "Humble" English version. Gypsy was so incredible. But Bird of Prey knocked me out with that dramatic Mellotron climbing riff. I had a friend who lost his mother at an early age, and Come away Melinda really touched my soul. But Wake Up Set your Sights was almost jazz with some very peaceful moments. Of course i knew the hits that would come later, but this one album really was important to me. Also Elton John's longtime drummer Nigel Olson was one of the drummers on it. One of the reasons Gary Thain's bass was so pronounced was his Acoustic 370 rig. It just punched out bass frequencies like no other amp of it's time. And Gary was a fine player too. Thank you again for your passion.
One of my early lps that I owned.I already had Demons n Wizards and Magicians Birthday which I loved.I saw it in the shop with all the glossy photos inside ,I counted my pocket coins and just made the price, took it to the shop owner who laughed and said that just came in this morning.’And I see we have selling a lot of newspapers’.It was my paper round money.‘Don’t worry it comes in handy for the parking meter customers’.He was a lovely man and anything that was remotely heavy and progressive he would always bring it to my attention. He was a lovely older man who unfortunately died suddenly and the shop was no more.Anyway I loved the album but I did prefer Made in Japan.
I got this album when I was 13 years old, also saw the band live a few times at the Glasgow Apollo theatre , still spinning it to this day. Fantastic album.
Always loved this band and album and yes Gary Thain was one of my favourite bass players ever. He played very melodic bass lines . So sad they had to fire him cos of his addictions that he later died from .
July Morning is a far better song than Child in Time. I understand why they compare them all the time but I can still listen to July Morning in all its forms through the years and today. Can't say the same about Child in time which in my view hasn't stood the test of time. Uriah Heep live is a great live album, warts and all. One of the top live albums of '73. Cheers Phil!
Phil, I am a HUGE Heep fan, listen to stuff off first 5 albums almost daily, and discovered them back in the '70s. Yet although I have the Live T-shirt, purchase when I saw them in NYC, USA a few years ago, I've never listened to the album. Yet I instantly understood everything you were saying. And now, this week, I'm going to embark on this journey. Thank you for showing this band the respect it deserves, and thank you for explaining with such depth this album.
My URIAH HEEP LIVE LPs are stashed ay my mom's. IIRC, my cover is not glossy. I forgot about how great that booklet is. Great live shots of the band (Hensley playing a white Les Paul). You're spot on about Gary Thain. I had just began learning bass...guys like JPJ, Thain, Dennis Dunaway, & Mel Schacher were some of "my" guys. Looking back in time, these guys not only played Riffs, they actually played Lines.
Hello Phil. I bought this album awhile back while I was record shopping one day because I'd heard about Uriah Heep and their legacy and influence on so many. I have a used vinyl copy from the 70's I believe and mine is on the Mercury label. Not sure if it's a first pressing or not. Anyway, I have yet to give it a spin because I just haven't gotten around to it yet but after watching your review you've inspired me to pick it up and spin it. I'll have to come back and let you know my thoughts on it. Really enjoyed hearing your story of this album. That was very cool that your School had a record library. I wish mine would've had one, but I graduated High School in 2018. Records and music weren't very popular in my school unfortunately. Looking forward to the future videos! - Dylan
Obviously he's rhythmic - he's a drummer!😄 I took out the double CD today and listened, and the sound of the album (and the drums) is very natural and sound great. I gotta listened this one through again! Thanks.
Lovely review Phil. And I can agree with almost everything you said about this amazing record. I was thirteen myself when I heard it from the first time back in 1994. Till this day one of my favourite live albums. There are some other mighty live albums by Heep as well. Spellbinder and Electrically Driven are my favourites from the later days.
Uriah Heep were probably my fav band in the early 70s. I started with Demons And Wizards, then bought Look At Yourself and then The Magician's Birthday before catching up with Salisbury and Very Eavy. All great stuff but i was so disappointed with the Live album when it was released. I just thought it was a mass of bass and keyboards at times and sold it shortly after. Hate mail to the usual address folks.
First time I’ve seen this channel. Your obvious love for this band and particular album is quite evident. I am a teen of the ‘70’s, so I do remember Uriah Heap from back in the day. A few songs stood out, but for the most part I didn’t go any deeper back then. Just listening to your review I know I should have followed the band more closely back then and am so looking forward to getting and listening to this album now. Your review also displays the joy and intensity that music we love can bring to our soul. Thank you.
I got it when I was 13. My older brother already owned Look At Yourself but I listened to it more than him. Loved the whole album but my favourite part was and still is to this day the R&R medley.
Great live album, favourite live albums of the 70's Uriah Heep live, Wishbone ash live dates and Purple made in Japan. Have been into Heep since 1972 and saw them live twice in the mid 70's. I totally agree that Gary Thain is a much underrated bass player. Love his playing in the Keef Hartley Band pre Heep.
Gary Thain was a fantastic bass player who sadly left us way too soon. The whole band really gelled together and really brought out the best in each other when they played together which became the classic era of the band. It is certainly a cracking live album and one of my all time favourite albums. Great memories Phil.
One of the best live albums of all time and not given the credit and recognition it deserves….Friday Night in Birmingham!!!
Thanks again for my vinyl copy, Glen. I'm going to crank it tomorrow when everyone is at work. \m/
@ you’re welcome Matt….crank it up and enjoy!!
My favorite live album. The rock and roll medley is EPIC !!!!
Uriah Heep Live is a fantastic example of a band at their peak. I have it on vinyl & it's absolutely my favorite in the catalog.
One of the greatest live albums ever made, and Heep never got lost in endless stage jams as many other bands did at the time.
I hate that about purple and rainbow.
All bands did that on some songs, Heep too extended live.
Heep live 73 we teenagers at the time, we used to listen to that beautiful album after school and we would party on school nights. Can't get that back.
No we can't but we can still listen to the music and close our eyes and remember those times - Phil
@NowSpinningMagazine My faves on that album was Gypsy and Circle of hands, can't remember if Easy Livin was on the 73 live.
I was a huge fan of Uriah Heep after buying The Magician's Birthday. Then I bought Demon and Wizards which was even better! I never bought this live album as I never had the money for it but I've heard it since and it is an excellent live album. I can understand giving up on Heep even before High n Mighty but their last two albums are nothing short of magnificent. Give them a try.
One of my favorite live albums of all time love it
First saw Uriah Heep on the 1973 tour at the Rainbow London I was 15 years old. Heep LIve one of the best ever
Uriah Heep Live 1973 is an Epic live album. At the time, I could not stop listening to it. David Byron and Gary Thing were the foundation of this live Epic Album, which still has a special place in my music journey in 2025!
Also the organ playing is superb too, Hensley

Glad you enjoyed it
Couldn't possibly forget this live record.
I just listened to my CD the other day. Great era for this band that I saw live 3 times between 1976-1977.
Congratulations. A wonderful review and description of the essence that perfectly captures the appeal of UH. The mixture of first-class songwriting, passion with pure power, emotion, fantasic singing, rousing drama is hard to resist.

“Friday Night In Birmingham” as Byron says. This was my first exposure to Heep as well, aged 14. Fell in love with “Sweet Lorraine” and loved the whole album! Thank you for the great memories!
I love that weird keyboard part in sweet Lorraine and its even more magical on the live album.
Hi Phil, I saw Heep three times in 1972 in Jacksonville, Florida: Feb, July, Dec. During the Wonderworld tour, I was able to meet all of them at a hotel lounge and got their autographs. 1970-1978 was quite a run, never to be duplicated. Cheers, Pat
What a great album! David was at the same level as Freddie Mercury. The whole band rocked!
My Aunt talked about knowing Gary Thain as a youngster in Christchurch, NZ.
I also remember my brother bringing this album home from a second hand shop in the 80s. Super talented band all round. They don’t get enough credit.
I still have my album ,bought it the day it was released in the US. ! Still ❤ it 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Great album, great band. I still have the original copy.
Never forgotten this album, saw them on that tour at the old Liverpool Stadium, front row seats with my two best mates sadly no longer with us.
Amazing band, amazing live album, dare I say even better than Made in Japan😮
Its very close!
July Morning on this album simply takes you to a magical space and is the definitive version of this wonderful song!
Totally agree
I was at that concert in Birmingham Town Hall, I bought the album as soon as it was released (£2.50 I think) it really captures the night completely, a concert I will never forget.
Wow - that is amazing :)
"I got some chewing gum on me boot and I keep sticking to the stage". I love this album, I need to get the lp again. I have a cd copy but it's missing the medley on the end. Thanks Phil'
I love that line as well ! Phil

Bought this when it came out. I was a huge UH fan. Very good mix. Just sayin

Regardless of what the critics said, this was one of the finest bands we ever had and their albums were pure musical artistry.
Wonderful album / great analysis / superb band ( especially that line up ) .
Thank you - Phil

Superb album, i have been a fan for 50 years and i love the Medley.
I'm getting this ASAP ❤
You will love it!
Love this subject for videos..classic LPS ..thanks
Watching this on silent as it's 6.24am. The written text has Mick Box as "MC Box" and the band as "Urinal Creep"! So I'm laughing and likely to wake the household up despite best efforts to be quiet.😅
Thanks, Phil - great review.
Hey Phil. Great video! Love that album! Side 3 is killer! Cheers
My favourite of the band, absolute classic, my entry to Uriah Heep too❤
Hi Phil really enjoyed your Uriah heap live I still have my original copy on vynal an also got it for Xmas love the heep since I first saw them on look at your self tour 👍 really took me back
A legendary album! Uriah Heep were the first live band I ever saw on their "Abominog" tour with April Wine. 🎸
Awesome album.
Thanks for another recommendation for an album I missed the first time around. Will be checking it out on Qobuz this long weekend. Thanks and happy thanksgiving to all who celebrate!
This is by far my favorite live album thanks for the great review Phil
Thanks for listening
I'd have to label Look At Yourself as one of the most underrated rock albums of the 70s
Beautifully recorded and Gary Thain gives John Entwhistle a run for his money. Listen to the bass on July Morning. It's just an amazing performance.
Cheers.
The Classic Uriah Heep Line-up in a memorable live performance!❤
The two most underrated live albums imo are Weld by Neil Young and Crazy Horse, and Okonkos by My Morning Jacket. Both stunning
The band I ve seen so many times and love their t-shirt with the text, "Always on tour" 😄. Had that album a long time ago.
I think I will have to play it tonight while unpacking stock
I did see a version of the Heep in Sydney many years ago
Thank you, Phil, I am one of those people you spoke of in the beginning of this video & I am heading to a record expo this weekend & this is now on the top of my list to hunt down. That is why I love your channel
Wonderful!
Great review Phil..so passionate and really stirs up memories from the day..must see review for all Uriah Heep fans..thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Yeah my introduction to this album came from my old mate and neighbour.
Great live album!!
Thanks for this, Phil. As a latecomer to the Heep, I've listened to most of their studio albums, but not this, so I can't wait to dive in.
Friday night in Birmingham!
Thank you for your kind words - Phil :)
- Dylan
Obviously he's rhythmic - he's a drummer!😄
I took out the double CD today and listened, and the sound of the album (and the drums) is very natural and sound great.
I gotta listened this one through again! Thanks.
I do say some daft things sometimes! Thank you for watching - Phil
Fabulous album
I love the live version of Traveller In Time but you could drop the needle anywhere on this great live album.
Thank you.
Great stuff.
I'm going to start a band called Urinal Creep
Could work! :)
I got it when I was 13. My older brother already owned Look At Yourself but I listened to it more than him. Loved the whole album but my favourite part was and still is to this day the R&R medley.
Fantastic Album! Rockn Roll!
Another great video, thanks Phil!
Thank you - Phil
Great live album, favourite live albums of the 70's Uriah Heep live, Wishbone ash live dates and Purple made in Japan. Have been into Heep since 1972 and saw them live twice in the mid 70's. I totally agree that Gary Thain is a much underrated bass player. Love his playing in the Keef Hartley Band pre Heep.
