- I am beginning a series of posts of the pieces that I have included in my book, HONORING MARCEL MOYSE, FOLLOWING IN THE STEPS OF A MASTER ALONG THE PATH TO TONE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH INTERPRETATION FOR THE FLUTE.
This book is written in a similar format to Marcel Moyse's Tone Development through Interpretation, complete with all new musical selections and examples with thorough explanations and suggestions toward artistic mastery of all the cited genres as well as personal reminiscences of my studies with Moyse.
Moyse had me promise him that I would write such a book, & now decades later, semi-retired, I have finally had the time to fulfill this promise.

Saw him yesterday, August 19, at the extraordinary new opera venue inaugurational gala in Budapest. This fantastic aria was encore #3!!! At 11.15pm!!! Bravissimo!!!

I have NEVER heard this aria sung before in such a sad and hopeless tone. Kaufmann may not be the best tenor ever but definitely one of the smartest who cares about his roles and tries to take the most of them. For that I take a bow.

What a beautiful strong tenor singing all Vienna songs takes me back to my childhood when Sunday we would sit in the lounge room listening to the songs. His voice just gives me tingling.
To Rasvana Cernat, I am sorry I did not see your question earlier. This is from the 2009 Opernhaus Zurich's production. JK had a very good relationship with the Zurich Opera House because he lived there (Munich was mistakenly not paying attention to him). A very unusual production because of Cavaradossi's drawing Tosca's eye on the wall as he sang "E lucevan le stelle" - very charming and touching. I have this DVD and love it!!

Mio nonno classe 1887 amava l'opera è mi ha attaccato la malattia. D'estate passavo interi pomeriggi a leggermi i libretti d'opera che aveva nella sua biblioteca. Questo pezzo prende il cuore grazie alla musica e alla bellissima voce dell'intreprete
Ho visto alcuni commenti di persone che forse sono piu' competenti di me e per curiosita' ho voluto comparare la voce di Kaufman con quella di Pavarotti e in effetti risulta parecchio.gutturale rispetto a quella.di Luciano che era limpida e potente.

comparto con Claudia flX. Es un actor que canta y encima canta con una locomotora en la garganta y el huracán catrina en el diafragma. Sus dotes actorales no son las del montón. no sobreactua nunca, generalmente el cantante de opera sobreactua. Kaufmann se mete adentro del personaje, esto diluye la partitura, directamente traspasa el plano de la representación. Su voz es ductil aunque sumamente complicada de manejar, pero forma una sola unidad conceptual con su "feeling" y es allí que surge la chisma de la magia en el escenario. No me cansaré de decir que no tiene igual. Así con toda la perfección y toda la imperfección que le atribuyan, no tiene comparación. Recaven registros de Till, Domingo, Corelli. Traigan a todos, y no comparen si llega a un agudo o sostiene una nota más o menos. En ese terreno estornuda y no deja a casi nadie para competir. Comparen el dramatismo en el canto. Pocos han logrado en la historia del canto llorar en las notas, en lo popular, La Piaf, en el canto lírico a parte de La Callas no conozco otra. Y ahora parece que las lágrimas se ponen pantalones y aparece esta "bestia del bel canto". La verdad da gusto tener sentido de la audición.
Kaufmann has a solid baritonal middle (similar to Domingo) but his characterizations verge on the monotonous and are less than thrilling. Mostly, he is unvaried in expression and tone.

Kaufmann has one significant advantage over Corelli--i.e., 21st century state of the art sound engineering clarity and amplification which Corelli's powerhouse sound was denied (especially) during his live performances which drove audiences into a frenzy. Electrifying and aberrant Kaufmann is not.

Tuve el privilegio de escucharle en Carmen con Veselina Kasarova. El Don José más emotivo que jamás he oido. Pura expresión tanto lírica como teatral. Una maravilla.

Since I wrote Kaufman is best I've heard one whom I think is possibly equal if not better. I know what the scene is about so it's maybe easier for me to feel what he's singing but I think even if you know nothing about this opera you can feel the depth of emotion.
