I think most polish people are afraid to speak english so you may think we are rude. If you speak polish and ask for something I'm sure people help you. Swedish people know english better even the older ones I think they are on top 3 in EU with speaking in english. As for not smiling, we have almost 6 months with this gloomy weather so everyone is hibernating and waiting for spring 😂

You had a real bad luck with the weather this time, 9/10 times it is at least 10 degrees outside in March and you can admire crocus and magnolia flowers that are everywhere, especially at Jasne Błonia.
I really recommend consulting a map if you want to find tourist spots in Szczecin, they are a bit more hidden and scattered here then in Kraków or Warsaw.
I almost had a heart attack when I saw you crossing the street on red light at the entrance to Trasa Zamkowa when it was snowing, most people drive at least 70 km/h there even though it's still in the city centre.
I wish you safe travels and hope that you will visit us again (maybe when it's a bit warmer? ;)).

  • @Marmurienna

Polish people rarely express their feelings in public, we also tend to avoid contact with strangers. The reminiscence of our communist past, when you couldn't trust anyone, is still very much rooted in people. Also we don't really have a reason to smile now - current economics, political division, war in Ukraine etc. are very depressing for Poles. But don't worry, we will cheer up a little as soon as the spring comes.
Also, I understand that you like to discover thing on your own, but you often miss/overlook things that are really worth seeing. If you don't like to look in your phone all the time, maybe consider buying some good old paper tourist guide?

Szczecin is a lot of green places and lakes. I recommend visiting the Arkonski Forest near Aqapark Arkonka. Deep Lake ''Głębokie'', Jasne Błonia next to city hall, Emerald Lake ''Szmaragdowe''. - All this has a specific positive atmosphere that helps to calm down and commune with nature.

Also, when it comes to Polish attitude towards people accosting them on the street I have a story that may explain this a little bit more to you. One time I went with my friends to a club and I got some kind of a drug put in my drink without my knowledge. I drunk only one drink in that place and immediately felt very sick to the point when I threw up and even lost consciousness for a moment. My boyfriend was trying to sober me up and take me back home, but I was completely unable to talk to him. Since he was new in the city at the time, he didn't remember how to go back to our new apartment. So he started to accost people on the street. He was stopping on every street crossing and every corner to make sure that we are heading in the right direction, each time he would ask strangers. At first all of them were very reserved, some even looked at him with disgust thinking we are both just drunk. But as soon as they were discovering that he really doesn't want any money, he doesn't want to scrounge cigarettes and doesn't want any trouble, the change in their attitude was immediate. It was so visible in peoples faces that he was truly amused how they can change that much in just a blink of an eye, he was talking about this over and over the next day.

This snow is maybe specially for you:) Because Szczecin and the region has the warmest winters and it is the least snowy in Poland. In last winters number of snowy days was sometimes below 10 days per year. For example in winter 2019/2020 in west Poland there was no snow at all. March in the warmest regions of Poland should be warmer even above +15 but can be chilly too:(

Oh daym, my hometown! I could tell you so much about it! For example when you were "at a random corner" the white tower you pointed was not a church but rather a Pomeranian Dukes Castle, the home of House of Griffin family that used to rule whole of Pomerania (about 3-4 todays voivodeship big)! Or in 19:30 you dont even know how close you were to truth! You were on the leftside (lewobrzeże) of the river - original city side. What you called other side, is actually a lot of small islands which is kind of warehouse district. After that there is another river - regalica, and behind that river is, what we call, rightside (prawobrzeże) which consists of Dąbie, Słoneczne, Zdroje and Podjuchy.

We like this atmosphere. Peace and quiet, no disturbances.
On Sunday a lot of people clean up and go to church.
People and families either lie at home or go for a walk. It's winter now, so we're staying at home 🙂
At the end of spring, summer and sometimes in autumn we have a barbecue, walk, eat outside or chill.

Szczecin and Gdańsk are port cities. That's why you feel the atmosphere of a small town and even a village 😉
There are ports here, so there are many manual laborers.
I lived and studied for 3 years in Gdańsk, I lived with my grandmother in the city center. I felt like in a small town.
I was born in Łódź, I recommend this city to you. I will be here forever. Come in summer please.
Lodz has the vibe of a big city like Warsaw, but is much quieter and cleaner than Warsaw. There are many students from other countries, so you won't be alone.
I recommend big cities. Life is slower in Łódź than in Warsaw, a lot of young people, children and students, not only employees and grandmothers 🚢
I❤ Lodz 🌉 Welcome! Even live permanently or rent. Now they're building us a subway and we've got a train that goes all the way through the city.
My stop in line is the name of my neighborhood. Radogoszcz East❤

Szczecin the Paris of Poland? first time I hear it. From Szczecin, I suggest coming to Gdańsk by train. The most beautiful city in Poland! :) It has more to offer than Old Town. Murals in the "Zaspa" district, a pier on the bay in the "Brzeźno" district, a park in the "Oliwa" district and much more. :)

Szczecin has been called so for a long time. It was designed by the same architect as Paris. - That is why the streets in Szczecin have as many squares, and star-shaped streets as Paris. 2. Szczecin has more cool spots than Gdańsk... Gdańsk is 70% a large block of flats like wave blocks. Szczecin, on the other hand, can surprise us with beautiful architecture, tourist spots an hour away from the very center of the city. In my opinion, Szczecin is a prettier and more interesting city.

The most pleasant snowfalls are when the temperature is below 0 Celsius. It won't get so wet. The colder it is, the most dry and pleasant air is. Below -4 or -5, the snow starts squeaking (the colder, the more distinct is the sound) when you walk.
That is why many people prefer true winters instead of mild ones, which are warmer, but messy and unpleasant with all the moisture around and in the air.
Now in March, it's rarely true winter, because temperatures are too high, so you get this wet, mushy, barely wintery days. If you get sunny weather, the mornings are typically freezing. If it's cloudy, it's way warmer.
This year, on the south of Poland, we get much warmer weather, even in smaller mountain areas. A lot of snow fell on Saturday, but for most of the day we got plus temperatures. It only got 0 or barely -1 in the evening. In the morning of the next day, we got -4, and it felt like a real winter. However, during a day we got +6 degrees, so the snow melted away in the same day. The birds were singing, spring flowers are popping up, it's a spring all right.

From now on am starting to be one of your followers on here. You had a luck having that encounter with that young woman(Swedish)who was more helpful than any other one(Polish). I know my folk(Polish). Some of them are alright but some not(like everywhere). Nevertheless I look at my folk as an outsider(I’ve been living here in Germany, Cologne: western part of it, Berlin as 1st station: The Place to be: especially when you are young and wild 😜)for many years. Poles are conservative regarding the main religion(Roman Catholic). They are backward and too religious though. Youngsters tho(unfortunately). However there are some open minded people(minority of the society, unfortunately). A typical pole: anti everyone and everything actually. Poles(not everyone)don’t speak English neither. That’s why I left so called my homeland for so called modern western. Germany has lots of positive sides likewise negative(unfortunately). Nevertheless I wouldn’t come back to Poland. Btw. You’re like the most of your folks(Americans): open minded, friendly, cool, positive vibes etc. The Germans say: The American way of life towards foreigners is just a fake thing: saying how’s your going etc: they don’t mind it either(not for real etc). The Germans have copied it though(in an artificial way though). Despite these challenges, issues and obstacles, you still try to keep your own opinion of Poland in a positive way. Thumbs up and respect. Btw. I’ve never been to Cleveland, OH. Although I’ve seen many places in The whole US(Miami, FL: a few days ago one more time). Best regards. Greetings from Cologne, Germany
