I have a 2002 Jetta with this problem and wanted to share my experience. If you have the CEL for this speed sensor and want to drive around with it you must leave it in 2nd gear. If you let it shift into third it's going to eventually damage the transmission. The transmission is in limp mode and trying to protect itself. Thankfully, the way I drive my Jetta it's around town so I drove in 2nd gear for around a year but it's not a daily driver. The first time I replaced the sensor I think I got a faulty sensor. The problem went away but came back 20 miles later. I made my own overlay harness and bypassed the stock wiring. Wiring the sensor directly to the transmission computer. I just replaced the sensor again and hopefully it works this time. Fingers crossed. One thing that I found interesting was the factory original sensor - when I took it out I cut away the outer wire shield to see what color the wires were inside. And the sheathing on each of the three wires were totally disintegrating. The outer sheath was in great shape. I guess stuff falls apart after 20 years.
Excellent video. I have a Golf Mk4 with the exact service code and shifting problems. You saved me countless hours diagnosing the problem. Especially learning to use a unibit as a reluctor wheel for an oscilloscope. I thank you for the video.
I liked the vw cars a lot but I was too afraid of the technology thanks to you I porches a new beetle 01 with trans problems said in the add and all it was is the speed sensor .......thank you very much!!!!!!!!
Hey Thomas, thanks for the video!! Very well done. I use Curil-T in all those type of seals and even on the outside of cam/crack seals with great results. Highly recommended!
Usual hard faults on mk4's is due to bad sensors. The ABS module does not go bad (that I have seen) on mk4's. If you have uneven tires... that can set ABS fault codes. If you live in an area where vehicle rust is an issue, the rust can cause false ABS activation (and set causes if the rust pushes the sensor away from the tone ring. You can check / compare resistance of the sensors to determine if they are within spec.
@@EXOVCDS Thanks for the explanation. The car is not in the rust belt, but does snow around here a couple of times per year. All the tires are the same size and the same brand/model. I'm going to check all the sensors, do you have a video how on that?
Haynes wants me to remove the VSS to check the differential lubricant level and makes it sound so easy but your video here shows a lot more work! Haynes says: 1. Raise the vehicle. 2. Disconnect the electrical connector. 3. Remove the mounting bolt and withdraw the VSS.
That's because I'm working on a different speeds sensor. The speed sensor that is used to check fluid level is on top of the differential. That sensor is also the one that is used to drive the speedometer needle.... the sensor in my video is a totally different sensor with a different job.
@@jeffreyhancock8170 If you need pictures of the correct sensor / location, I can post that here. I'm surprised that Haynes would make you think that the sensor is the one in my video. Hmmm, weird.

What happens if you change the vehicle speed sensor and you still have a shifting problem. I had my vehicle speed sensor changed if my car check engine light is off it will not shift at all when the check engine light comes on it stays in seconds and then our third and then at 40 miles an hour it's just in the third gear but then it will not shift in the 4th gear so at 60 miles an hour I'm at 3,000 RPM there are three more sensors the transmission a
Thanks for the concise video. Issue: I just pulled my 02 New Beetle with 1.8T and AutoTrans out of winter storage. Although it was shifting perfectly before I put it into storage last fall, now it's shifting semi-hard into 3rd at roughly 3800 rpm's and WON'T shift at all into 4th. Could it be my fluid level (changed by VW dealer last summer with good success) or the AT speed sensor? Also, what are the bare minimum tools required to tackle this job? Any direction would be much appreciated. Thank you very much for this vid!
I wouldn't suspect fluid level unless the floor under the transmission has a lot of oil on it now. Solenoids and ribbon cable (the part that connects the solenoids to the TCM wiring) are common failure items with age. Start with scanning the TCM for fault codes.
@@EXOVCDS Ok, I bought a VW scanner and got the codes: 00281 Driving Speed Sensor & 00652 Gear Monitoring. What should I do now? Replace the speed sensor first? Do you recommend a specific brand? I will check for fluid leaks as well.
@glisse_1 Check out the following links. wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/00281 wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/00652 The second code is probably set because of the first one. Confirm that the wiring & connectors (at the sensor & TCM) are ok... if yes, replace the sensor. If your scan tool can view TCM sensor data, you can remove the sensor and wave a piece of metal in front of it to see if the scan tool can see a change in "speed". If wiring & connections are ok, replace the sensor and do the same check before installing. www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-New_Beetle--1.8T/Search/SiteSearch/G68/

Great video. I have a 2001 golf 2.0 automatic transmission. Had a coolant flange blow last week and antifreeze sprayed everywhere above that speed sensor location. Now I have P0722 and shifts at around 4000 rpm. Would u say I need a new speed sensor and is the job the same as in this video. Also I’ll get new bolts for mount but what r the torque specs. Thanks in advance n great work me friend
Although possible (that it failed due to coolant)... I'd lean more towards age being the cause. If it's a 4 speed (01M) transmission, then yes, it's possibly the same sensor / issue. workshop-manuals.com/volkswagen/golf-mk4/engine/4-cylinder_injection_engine_(1.6_l_engine)_mechanics/engine_assycylinder_blockcrankcase/removing_and_installing_engine/torque_settings_for_assembly_mountings/
Hey thx for responding!! I ordered the new bolts for tranny/gearbox mount. Dealer said they’re r 6 of them? In your video u removed 6 bolts for the mount I believe? Also thx for the link to get the torque specs. Really appreciate your help buddy
Hi, your video is amazing, very detailed information. I wanna ask you something. Do you know the value of resistance between positive & negative pole (1,2) for a g68 speed sensor in good condition?
Thomas - First thanks for the video! Question if you don't mind. 2001 NB AVH engine. 00281 Vehicle Speed Sensor (G68) 03-00 No Signal from VAG-COM. If I reset the code, I get the same error as you, BUT then the transmission shifts flawlessly when it should....but within just a few miles, code was thrown again and the DTC returns 00281. Had the timing belt done and the coolant flange replaced and then within a couple days the fuel pump died, which I replaced. However, my son-in-law towed it to my house with all 4 on the ground after the pump died, but did tow slowly. About 10 miles. After I replaced fuel pump, transmission was slow to shift - would go up to 4,000 rpm then shift. I thought his towing ruined the transmission and was not too happy since I thought it meant the car was now worthless. In you video, when the sensor is out, you say to turn the wheel to make sure that the internal part is working. Would you suspect that internal part was ruined by the tow or would you think it actually is just that the sensor died concidentally at the same time as the fuel pump?
The sensor is cheap & easy to replace... while it is out, it's easy to check the reluctor wheel for movement. I don't know if towing a car with the wheels on the ground is harmful to the transmission. Replace the sensor or check with a transmission shop if towing could have caused damage.
My owners manual says don't tow with all 4 down, but maybe some is tolerable. Feeling it shift flawlessly after I reset the code gives me hope that the transmission is not ruined after all. I'm certain I can do the repair having your video as a guide. Thank you so much for doing what you do! I'll let you know how it goes.
Yes it completely stop working as off two days ago and it's the same stop for a stick shift as a auto? It's hard to find a store that sells the manual sensor. Do they both look the same?
Hi! Great video! So a few questions... When checking circuit integrity with the crankshaft sensor plugged into the oss connector and using the drill, how can I check without the diagnostic system you have? Am I checking just for voltage one higher than the other like you said in a comment to someone else or is there a specific voltage that should be reached (5v) to insure the new sensor will function properly. I would like to test the circuit integrity as well as the new part before installing. I have a 2010 vw jetta 2.5l, throwing 0721 it starts no problem and drives until it reaches 3rd gear cant shift or go over 30mph. Could this just be dirty fluid/filter, low fluid, should I change those first? Also many peolple are suggesting it is the internal sensor, behind valve body not this external sensor under the mount as pictured here? I apologize if my vernacular is not correct I am a newby to transmissions and automotive work and as a female I cant seem to just get the answers without getting "help" from people when I would like to learn for myself. I can't decern between the two sensors. The one in your video is not very expensive while the internal is 2-500$. And seeing as i just serviced a different transmission I know I am capable of doing that and the job shown here but do you suggest having a mechanic do the work if it is the internal sensor? Thanks again I feel confident about doing this job now except for how to check output of sensor with no computer. As soon as you confirm that is the sensor that correlates to this code that is...lol Super clear and super helpful video! Your now my vw sensi ❣️🙏
Ok adding on I was watching another video and they were talking about open circuit codes and I thought maybe it was important to let you know that it's also throwing code 0651 Voltage B circuit open/ sensor reference
Being a 2010 jetta with a 2.5l engine, the transmission will be different than the one in my video. Open circuit fault codes can point to a wiring / circuit board / sensor problem. You need to get your hands on a wiring diagram & service manual for "your" transmission, then you can do some troubleshooting before buying parts. I'm away from the pc... if you let me know what automatic transmission you have, I can supply you with the info you need. Using VCDS, a system scan will list all the info for all modules as well as transmission type & production code.
My 00 bug speed o is at 35 when going 55. Also dies a lot at slow speeds. It is an automatic and it sluggish to go into gear when cold, I will be taking it in to check this sensor. Thanks!
Nice video Mr.Thomas! My nice 1999 VW Beetle brakes with rumble at a speed of 20 km/h and do not get a diagnosis from mechanics!Runs normally at any other speed! And if I pull the handbrakein stationary the ABS and ESP warning lights on board after leaving and reaching that speed(20Km/h).I appreciate if you have time to answer!Thank you!
One of your speed sensors at one of the wheels might not be showing the correct speed to the ABS module. Check tire pressure and tire size... low pressure or wrong tire size can cause unwanted activation. If tires are OK, check the pulse wheel for all the sensors.. check for cracks, damage and even air gap between sensor & pulse wheel.
Hi sorry I know this video is old but I’m having this exact problem with my beetle with this exact code popping up. The piece was cheap and I thought I could do it myself but are you saying I can’t without mounting it?
I don't know what you can or can't do... I don't know what tools you have. The video shows where the sensor is and how to get to it. The video also says that the transmission needs to be supported from underneath... are you able to do that? If you feel like you can do it... replace the sensor.
I just got a 98 bug it's auto and parks fine and reverse works fine but seems only forward gear is 2nd or 3rd no shift while going forward at all.??? Ya think it's the G68 sensor??
i have almost same problem with mk4 4 speed , when i want to move forward or reverse i need to put too much gas on acceleration almost 5 rpms when its cold, and when i drive the engine warms up i dont have this problem, i have this same error code in scanner.( oil and filter are new)
Can you verify with your scan tool that there is no signal when cold, but there is a signal when warm? Best place to check is at the sensor connector with a scope. Multimeter will also work, but not as well. Quickest thing to do is change the sensor. If nothing changes, take a closer look at all of the wiring / connections from the sensor to the TCM. I don't think that the gear inside the transmission could be to blame... but I'm not a transmission guy.
Question my wife's car is a 2000 beetle 2.0 manual. Her speedometer has completely failed. The check engine light has been on for awhile indicating sensor. Where is the location on a manual.
At 11:16 in the following video, you can see the sensor next to my coworkers hand. The sensor is usually covered with a heat shield / fabric pouch. You can get to the sensor from the top / through the open hood engine bay. ua-cam.com/video/OjdsKg1LsC8/v-deo.htmlm16s
Hello friend, good afternoon. I have a new bettle 2008 automatic 2.0. Yellow, like this video. Today the car stopped. It turns on and accelerates normally, but when it engages the gear it moves a bit and stops, but the engine continues to run normally. All the tail lights are on, as if all gears were engaged. Do you think it could be the speed sensor? Many thanks from Brazil. Congratulations on the video. Sorry bad English.
Hi... no, I don't think that it is a speed sensor problem. I would start with scanning the TCM (Transmission Control Module) for fault codes. Could be a wiring problem or a fault inside the transmission / valve body, but that is just a guess.
If you feel the transmission shift from 1 to 2 and then to 3... no, this sensor is not the issue. The "speed sensor" for the speedometer & odometer is on top of the differential. It's a 3 wire sensor. It could be that the sensor is bad... or it could be the plastic gear inside the transmission that is bad. 4th gear engagement is a separate issue.
Great Video, I am having a weird problem with my 2003 Beetle with a 2.0 engine. The cruise control starts to surge if set at 70 MPH or higher. This also causes the speedometer to bounce and not read speeds over 80. no check engine light or engine codes. speedometer works fine if I don't use the cruise. It also seems like my speedometer is about 2 MPH faster than what I'm actually going. Any ideas? Thanks!
Guidelines that manufacturers have to follow: Speedometers are allowed to show faster than actual speed (up to 10% if I'm not mistaken), but are not allowed to show less. This can help prevent getting speeding tickets... in a way. Watch this video... it might be the reason for your bouncing needle: ua-cam.com/video/w27c3euMsiw/v-deo.html
Sounds like this is my car. I got a call from my daughter who was on a date telling me the car started to go limp and make noise. She pulled over and the code P0731 came up? Looks and sounds like a Speed Sensory. I don't have access to a VCDS?
@@EXOVCDS no noise just won’t go past first gear. I will check the fluid first I guess. Then pull sensors to see if they see faulted. If it is mechanical a rebuild in canada is $4500-5500 so for a 2007 with 200000 km off to bed it goes. 🥲
I doubt it is starting in first... it most likely is in limp mode and starts in 2nd or 3rd gear, because there's no speed signal. If it were in first gear, the rpms would climb quickly and you wouldn't be able to go past 30-40mph.
@@EXOVCDS thanks for your response. If it is starting in a upper gear and I have a basic odm2 reader that I reset and it still does it. After fluid is their anything I should check? Thanks again

2004 2.0 randomly shuts off. Check engine light does not get activated. But there is a “pending” code of p0725. Would that correlate to this sensor? Pulling hair out trying to solve this for someone. There’s no rhyme or reason. I turns off very randomly. No codes nothing. Once, it stumbled but saved itself. Again, no hard faults. the ONLY thing I have to go off of is that pending p0725. I also replaced the plastic plug since the old one had the tab broken (probably while trying to remove it withouth knowing how or without the special tool) and no difference. I also just swaped the TCM and no difference, same code. Does it sound like a broken wire to you? I'm working with a 2000 VW Jetta (AEG engine with the 01M transmission) thanks in advance for your promp response.
What is the actual code? Usually (with a wiring problem) there will be a "short to plus or ground" fault code. Can your scan tool view live TCM sensor data? I'm heading out for some errands, will reply again once I'm back home.
@@x-man4702 Using OBD11... find the data / sensor value for G38 (Transmission Vehicle Speed Sensor)... verify that the speed does not change when driving. You can test the sensor like I did, by removing it (leaving it attached) and moving a metal object rapidly across the face of the sensor. If nothing happens, check that one of the wires has a voltage on it, the other wire might also (I'm not a transmission guy, but one of the voltages should be higher). If you do get a signal when wiping a wrench across the face of the sensor, but not when driving, then the sensor wheel in the transmission is not moving. Does the car drive? How does it shift? I have a 2004 Beetle which is shifting into and out of park, reverse and drive just fine and always has. But suddenly when I am driving, when I get up to about 20mph, it gets loud and the RPMs go up to 4000 or a little over, the faster I try to go the louder it gets and the higher the RPMs get. Basically it seems to not want to go into 2nd gear. Seems to be pretty much the same issue, right? Thank you for the advice
What happens when you manually shift... 1, 2, 3? In this video, the rpm were slow to build (because the transmission was starting off in a higher gear. If your transmission is stuck in 1st gear, rpm will climb quickly and the engine will get loud (because of the high rpm). Check for fault codes, check fluid level... probably an issue with the valve body (solenoid bad or sticking). Have a transmission shop test drive it.
So which other sensor would it be if I'm still having shipping from because it will not shield unless the check engine light is on and it's a 2001 Volkswagen Beetle diesel
If the transmission computer is setting a fault code for a specific sensor or solenoid, then you have to check that sensor, solenoid or wiring. At this age, it is common to see wiring faults or faults with the ribbon cable inside the transmission. No one can tell you what the problem / fix is. You have to check things yourself to find the problem. Using a scan tool, multimeter and a wiring diagram. Sometimes it is quicker & cheaper if you take the vehicle to a shop that is familiar with vw automatic transmissions.
I have a 98 volkswagon beetle manual transmission went through a rain storm and now I have no gears ..is the transmission computer module located on passenger side.
Standard transmission does not have a computer / module. Did you drive through a deep puddle? Does the shifter feel weird or normal? Does the clutch pedal feel normal or weird?
In this video a sensor that is mounted on the transmission is bad... the engine itself has no running issues. Your codes are stored in which module? Engine / Transmission / other?

No... your transmission probably has other issues. A faulty speed sensor (such as in this video) causes the TCM to select 2nd or 3rd gear (I can't remember which) when starting to drive. The car is slower to accelerate (due to being in a higher gear) and the TCM does not shift into the next gear until engine rpm is quite high & the throttle is released. No harsh shifting. Harsh shifting is usually a valve body / solenoid issue.

Thank you sorry about the paragraph lol
It could be that the "tone wheel" (pressed on to the differential) for the speed sensor is loose... causing it to slip at low speeds and start spinning at higher speeds. Vehicle speed & ABS sensor speed signals are compared... non matching signals can cause ABS / Traction control activation which could be the jerking that you are feeling.
@EXOVCDS I think I'm having the same problem my nieces car. So is that something that could be done from outside or transmission has to come apart aka replaced with another used one. Thank you for the video and taking the time
If it is a 01M transmission, yes... if your shifter can me be moved to the right and then shifted between +/- to change gears, then no. What's the actual issue? TCM fault codes?
More than one type of transmission available in the Beetle.... that's why I asked. More than one sensor in those transmissions. The more info I have, the better I can guess. If your mechanic is able to read codes, he should be able to fix the issue. Was the estimate too much? An hour of shop labor compared to not being able to drive the car for the weekend (trying to fix it), might be money well spent.
Would you happen to know why my cruise control won't engage? My car runs fine other than that. My check engine, ABS, and traction lights are on and have stayed on for a year or so.

What is not working? Speedometer? Transmission not shifting correctly? Which automatic transmission is in your car? What fault code is stored in the TCM? The more info I have, the better I might be able to help.
Hello Thomas, Thanks you for quick response. 2008 Rabbit manual transmission (USA). Speedometer and odometer are not working. Brake and ABS light are yellow. The DTC code is: P0501. The Chilton manual says the VSS is integrated to the TCM and the replacing is beyond the coverage. I saw a youtube video shown that the Golf IV has a speedometer in the transmission box, however I can not find it Sunday when I tried to repair. Today I watched another video shown that the VSS was under the transmission mounting plate which should be removed in other VW golf model before 2006 model. Also I can not get the VSS part online. I am thinking to consult the dealer as soon as possible. Thanks for concern.
Intermittent stalling... but starts right away, could be due to a bad ECM power supply relay. Or something else. If the stalling / no start does not happen long enough for you to do some testing... it can be difficult trying to trace down the actual issue. It will be easier to find the problem when it gets to the point where the engine does not start at all.

Si es así, entonces el problema está en el grupo de instrumentos, si no, entonces el problema podría estar en el sensor de velocidad (g22) en la parte superior del diferencial en la transmisión. estoy usando el traductor de google
Hello sir.. Can you please help me with my mk4 2.0 auto trans is stuck on 3rd gear if I put it on Drive.. It doesn't wanna shift out of 3rd gear 😢 please advise
Can i lube the oring with normal engine oil? must it be an atf? I have similar problem with my golf 4, AG4 transmission gear. But it works at firsts few kilometres, later the "clock" is jumping, and at least i have 0kmh speed, and an icon with low fuel levev every time when i'm turning
If the speedometer "needle" stops moving... then it is a different sensor that is the problem (or a problem with the gear inside the transmission, that turns the sensor). Yes, a little bit of engine oil on the o-ring is not a big deal. If the needle stops moving, let me know and I will tell you which other sensor to check.
As far as what has gone in yes brand new parts all good quality was told by shop that speed sensor could cause the injectors to spray right and mess with spark

I have a Mk4 1.8t that was Automatic but I made it standard, everything works in the cluster except for the speedometer, btw I have a GLI computer installed on the car. Would that be the problem or definitely the speed sensor is bad.
@@FenixPajarito you need to compare the ecm & instrument cluster wiring diagrams to see how the speed sensor is attached / wired up. I don't know if the signal goes to ecm or instrument cluster first. I would also have to check the wiring diagrams in order to tell you. On the mk4's when the speedo does not work, the fuel gauge will act strange. Does yours?
@@EXOVCDS Yes, the fuel gauge acts weird, it moves to the right and left depending on how I drive, especially when I'm low in gas the low gas warning ⚠ icon beeps non stop when I make fast turns or if I push the gas pedal a bit aggressive the fucking low gas warning icon ⚠ will appear and beeps lol so my only choice is to fill the tank with $20 bucks and the gas icon would still beep sometimes but a lot less than when I'm low in gas, however the fuel gauge acts crazy no matter what lol.

If the engine stops running... and you can't start it until the engine has cooled down, then I would say that the crankshaft position sensor is bad. Transmission Output Speed Sensor should not cause / affect engine running.
Thomas EXOVCDS The engine does start just the car will not move when I put it in gear it’s usually after like 15 minutes of driving thank you for your response
@@sonidovertigo2003 That is a weird symptom / condition that I have not yet come across, sorry. Which automatic transmission do you have? If it's the 09G 6 speed transmission, you can read about the G195 sensor here: (page 45) www.evosoft.dk/diagrams/DSG.pdf Sensor failure "should not" affect vehicle driveability... as listed on the same page (ABS speed input is used instead). I would first make sure that the transmission has the correct fluid level and that the correct fluid is inside of the transmission. Have a transmission shop (that is familiar with VW transmissions) look at the vehicle... you'll get a quicker diagnosis from someone who is familiar with the transmission. You can also leave a comment under this video: ua-cam.com/video/MhG1DfJsGyQ/v-deo.html He is familiar with these transmissions.
Hey I just changed my speed sensor with an After market one. I test drove it and it still ha s the same problem. Do I need to drive it a few times for maybe the computer to realize it was changed since my check engine light is still on? Thank you Sir
No... but you might want to clear the code if you have not already. Use a scan tool to confirm that the sensor is putting out a signal (like I did in the video).
Ok so I cleared the code and I’m still having the same problem. I am now getting codes P0753 & P0758 & P0768 & P0773 “Shift solenoid B electrical”. Any advice on what to check next? Thanks
@@pujo28 Not knowing what all you disconnected / reconnected / not reconnected... makes things a little difficult as to guessing what the issue might be. In general, if codes were not present before a repair, then double check what was done. I usually go to the Ross-Tech website, enter codes in the "Google Custom Search" field (at the top right of the page below the address) and then read through the info that comes up. Year, make, model, transmission? I'm assuming it's a 01M as in this video... since you are posting under this video? Retrace your work / check connectors / connections.
I’m sorry. It’s a 2001 vw golf 2.0 I changed the G68 output speed sensor but it’s still in limp mode and not shifting right. No 4th gear. After I changed the sensor and cleared the codes I still got codes P0758,68&73 Any advice and is it worth a DIYer like me trying to fix it. I can’t justify bringing it to a mechanic when the car is worth scrap at this point. But otherwise runs great so I’d like to try n keep her going. Plus no good mechanics that I could trust in NYC. Thanks
Here's a question for ya.. At the end of the video when you showed the driving clip, isn't 55km/h a awful slow for an 01M to be shifting into 4th? On my TDI 01M I hit 3rd around 50km/h and 4th around 70km/h assuming normal acceleration. Does an 01M mated to a gasser have different shift points?
+Michael Shone I was driving it quite gentle... gas pedal angle wise (if I recall correctly). Driving more aggressive, it will shift later. I did do basic settings as well... I'll check the next one I get my hands on... well spotted & good question. Did I send you an Auto Tranny pdf? I think it contains shift points.
I have a 04 Jetta GLI that portentously has a bad speed sensor. I was told that it might not even be a speed sensor but the cluster that needs to be replaced. When i turn the wheel my gas light turns on at times. My odometer doesn’t work. Any suggestions?
Speedometer needle not working & fuel gauge issues, both can be caused by a faulty / bad Vehicle Speed Sensor. Depending on which transmission you have... the sensor is either on top of the differential or inside the transmission. To rule-out the instrument cluster... you can perform an "output test" using a capable scan tool, to activate the operation of all of the needles. If all needles function as they should (when activated in output tests), then the problem is NOT with the instrument cluster.
Look for the sensor at the back of the differential: fkh161.ca/VW/A4/SpeedSensor02M.jpg You should be able to see it from the top (use a flashlight). Check the wiring / connections.
Check the instrument cluster for fault codes using a scan tool that can do it. Perform "output tests" with that scan tool... to activate the needles. The needles should swing full right, left and then stop in the middle. If the tachometer needle does not move, then there is a problem with the instrument cluster.
Thanks for the video. I have a 2002 VW Bora 1.6SR.auto trans. My own code is 00529-engine speed signal missing. My car shifts normally but after sometime, it will go into gear 3. When u switch of the car, everything returns to normal. The cycle repeats often. Other codes displayed are 00518, 00545, 01314 and 01314. Pls what could be a lasting solution to this erratic shifting of my car. Thank you.
01315 in ECM says to check TCM. 00518 - Throttle Position Sensor (G69) 00529 - Engine Speed Signal missing 00545 - Engine - Transmission, Electrical Connection 01314 - Engine Control Module The ECM & TCM are losing communication between each other... you need to check the wiring that goes from the ECM to the TCM. If turning the key OFF & ON resets things, check for a relay problem.

Hi thomas, i got a fault code p0501 with my 2001 NB 1.8T;it seem to be my G22 sensor is gone, I would like to ask u , is the vcds the Engine measuring blocks group 005 the vehicle speed its G22 value?Cause it just show 0 km/h ,but Tansimission measuring blocks vehicle speed which g68 gave me its the same with my cluster. so i would like to know is normal that group 005 the vehicle speed be 0 km/h?
In the engine module... any km/h value should be G22 input. If the speedometer works but the engine does not see vehicle speed, then there might be a wiring issue. wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/16885/P0501/001281 Check a wiring diagram according to which transmission you have and do some checking.
yap, i think my G68 its good to work; cause vcds 02->08->Group(004) vehicle speed looks good, and G68 voltages too, so i ill check my g22 wiring, thx a lot Thomas, i ill let u know what i have found.

Thank you for watching & taking the time to comment!
Thank you for sharing.

Could you make a video about how to diagnose hard faults on ABS systems? Particularly MK4 cars.

That was an excellent tip using a unibit to test a speed sensor. Too bad I didn't see that many years ago.
@@EXOVCDS Thanks!
@@EXOVCDS Ok, I bought a VW scanner and got the codes: 00281 Driving Speed Sensor & 00652 Gear Monitoring. What should I do now? Replace the speed sensor first? Do you recommend a specific brand? I will check for fluid leaks as well.

Check out the following links.

The second code is probably set because of the first one.

Hi, your video is amazing, very detailed information. I wanna ask you something. Do you know the value of resistance between positive & negative pole (1,2) for a g68 speed sensor in good condition?
0.8k Ohm or 800 Ohm (0.9k or 900 Ohm max). Information can be found in the service manual.
Thanks a lot for your answer, I have one g68 new and throws a valuf of 1,145 k or 1145 ohm is this sensor in bad state?
Thanks a lot for your answers my friend. Best Regards.
Thank you.
Hi nice video but how do you unclip the sensor, that part is not shown and we can't get it off using multiple tools?
Push the connector towards the sensor... pull back on the release tab with your thumb, pull the connector off.
Any luck? I recorded a how-to video just now. Will post it on the weekend.

Great education
Thank you for watching!
If I don't have the ability to clear the code....and replacing the G68 fixes it.....will the code clear on its own?
In theory, yes... the TCM should clear the code on its own once it no longer detects a fault with the sensor.
As soon as you confirm that is the sensor that correlates to this code that is...lol
Super clear and super helpful video!
Good video ! I like the drill trick too 😀
How much will the shop cost me to look at my beetle I have the same problem
I don't know... you have to ask the shop that you will go to.
My 00 bug speed o is at 35 when going 55. Also dies a lot at slow speeds. It is an automatic and it sluggish to go into gear when cold, I will be taking it in to check this sensor. Thanks!
The speedometer sensor is a separate sensor from the shifting sensors... there might be more than one issue.
Possibly... scan the ECM & TCM for fault codes. Let me know what the codes are (if any).
Do you know where the same sensor is for a manual transmission 2008 beetle 2.5 engine
5 speed or 6 speed?
What's the actual issue? Speedometer not working?
i have almost same problem with mk4 4 speed , when i want to move forward or reverse i need to put too much gas on acceleration almost 5 rpms when its cold, and when i drive the engine warms up i dont have this problem, i have this same error code in scanner.( oil and filter are new)
Can you verify with your scan tool that there is no signal when cold, but there is a signal when warm?
Best place to check is at the sensor connector with a scope. Multimeter will also work, but not as well.
Quickest thing to do is change the sensor. If nothing changes, take a closer look at all of the wiring / connections from the sensor to the TCM.
I don't think that the gear inside the transmission could be to blame... but I'm not a transmission guy.
How do you get the plug undone? I can’t get it off the bracket.

Thanks a lot Thomas. I will check. After i talk to you!!!
you need transmission oil added must be a guart or so low that is what they do when low a safety precaution to prevent burning transmission out.

So I have a 2000 Jetta won’t shift into 4th and both the speedometer and Odometer are not working. Is this speed sensor the issue?
This can help prevent getting speeding tickets... in a way.
Watch this video... it might be the reason for your bouncing needle:

Sounds like this is my car. I got a call from my daughter who was on a date telling me the car started to go limp and make noise. She pulled over and the code P0731 came up? Looks and sounds like a Speed Sensory. I don't have access to a VCDS?
If it's making noise, it's probably not the same fault. Check the timing belt.
Sorry, I just saw that it's a 2007. Different transmission than the one in the video. If you xan tell me the production code of the transmission, I can look for some specific repair info.
What’s the cost to replace the speed sensor?
Not sure... phone a local European repair shop in your area to get a quote. Click the following ling and then enter your postal code to get search results.

After it does stall, it takes a few seconds of cranking to fire back up. Then all is good again.
Sorry about the late reply... most likely a bad crankshaft position sensor.

Hello Thomas, I'm having an issue with the G38 senson, no signal. I replaced both, the G38 and G68 and no change.

No... your transmission probably has other issues.

Hello Thomas, Thanks you for quick response. 2008 Rabbit manual transmission (USA). Speedometer and odometer are not working. Brake and ABS light are yellow. The DTC code is: P0501. I am thinking to consult the dealer as soon as possible. Thanks for concern.
In addition, I can drive without any problem.
Front left ABS Speed sensor is the VSS (the instrument cluster uses the front left ABS speed sensor as a Vehicle Speed signal).

Kind of you to say... thank you for watching!
My beetle stalls then cuts off while driving but starts right back up, does it every blue moon, what can be my problem

Thomas EXOVCDS its a 6speed manual.
Let me look at a wiring diagram... I'll get back to you.
Thomas EXOVCDS you the best brother.
Look for the sensor at the back of the differential:

You should be able to see it from the top (use a flashlight).
Check the wiring / connections.
i have a 2001 1.8T. i have no tachometer but speed is ok. What should i check?
Check the instrument cluster for fault codes using a scan tool that can do it. Perform "output tests" with that scan tool... to activate the needles. The needles should swing full right, left and then stop in the middle. If the tachometer needle does not move, then there is a problem with the instrument cluster.
no needle movement..
With the scan tool? You activated output tests?
Thomas EXOVCDS vcds..all ok in other needls..but not the rpm one..
Χαράλαμπος Καναλουπίτης You might have to replace the instrument cluster or have it repaired.
Thank you.
Are all those codes from the ECM or are they from the TCM?
00518, 00529, 00545, 01314 are from Auto Trans address: 02 01315 is from address 01:Engine
01315 in ECM says to check TCM.
00518 - Throttle Position Sensor (G69)
00529 - Engine Speed Signal missing
00545 - Engine - Transmission, Electrical Connection
01314 - Engine Control Module
The ECM & TCM are losing communication between each other... you need to check the wiring that goes from the ECM to the TCM. If turning the key OFF & ON resets things, check for a relay problem.
Thomas EXOVCDS
Thanks for the info. Pls which relay do I check and where do I trace the wire from the the TCM to the ECM.
I'm busy editing videos right now... I will look for a wiring diagram / information for you later today and will send you a link once I have something.
Thomas what does vcds stand for on your lap top based scan tool
You have to ask the makers of VAG-COM / VCDS.

+Thomas EXOVCDS OK my friend. One more thing is it just a VW factory tool
All VW, AUDI, SEAT, SKODA (everything under the VW group)... it has a Global / Generic OBD2 function as well, but they can not guarantee communication with all makes & models. www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/faq_4.php#4.11
+Thomas EXOVCDS OK thanks
i have a 2001 beetle shifts good but when slowing down and. when accelerating it slips what could it be
I assume it is an automatic? Could be an issue with one of the solenoids in the valve body... or low fluid. Check the TCM for fault codes.
Thomas EXOVCDS yes automatic will check the codes

Check a wiring diagram according to which transmission you have and do some checking.
yap, i think my G68 its good to work; cause vcds 02->08->Group(004) vehicle speed looks good, and G68 voltages too, so i ill check my g22 wiring, thx a lot Thomas, i ill let u know what i have found.
