- I’m 2011 NASCAR came to Road America for the second year in a row with the then named NASCAR Nationwide Series. At the time the track was not a proven commodity for NASCAR so the race had to deliver, well it did in stunning and bizarre fashion. This is NASCAR’s most bizarre race at Road America.

Do you think NASCAR made the right call with this finish?
No because at the moment of caution Justin Alligier was leading. Even if he ran out of fuel he should of been awarded the win.
@@kymmburkhart2046 Its in the rulebook that you must maintain caution speed
I do agree. It sucks for both Justin Alligier and Ron Fellows but rules are rules. Sorensen got the win fair and square
Greg Biffle Kansas says otherwise
I agree because sorenson was 2nd when allgaier ran out caution or no caution sorenson probally would have won
People forget how competitive Sorenson was in Xfinity.
And he was a point leader in 2011!
I remember when he drove the #41 Discount Tire car
This was his 4th and final win in Xfinity.
And he finished in 2nd place.
he could have won the championship if he didn't get dropped
Jacque Villenueve was wrecking ball, Justin Allgaier ran out of fuel, Ron Fellows ignored the yellow, and Reed Sorenson of all people won the race…
*Yeah… I think this race was on steroids already…*
Jason Leffler also ran out of fuel.
Villeneuve was the perfect example of a driver who has nothing to gain by playing nice. He did the same thing in Montréal. What he needs is a good ol' boys tune-up.
McDowell also got redemption at Road America in 2016 via winning in the 2
'Superstar voided.. forgetting 1997 f1 world champion Jacques Villneneuve and Max Papis, another legend.
No shame in losing the lead to Fellows, Villneuve, or McDowell.
Fun Fact: This event was Reed Sorenson's last NASCAR win
Got screwed over in that ride if I remember correctly
@@ahhculdee wasn’t he doing well in points too?
@@nolancain8792 Sorenson was 3rd in the points & then all of a sudden Turner Scott just dropped him from the #32 with like 5 races left in the year. There's a couple rumors out there as to why but we really don't have a concrete answer
@@DaPurpleDawg like what rumors?
@@daviclar867 The only thing thats actually known from the situation was Dollar General (their main sponsor) was leaving the team after the year was over (not sure behind the reasoning of benching Sorenson if that's the case). Some rumors I've read involved his teammate Justin Allgaier, after they had a wreck together a week or two beforehand. The rumors range from Allgaier wanting Turner Scott to fire Sorenson because of it, to Sorenson himself getting heated with management over Allgaier. Like I said, nothings really concrete besides the fact that Dollar General was leaving the team for JGR after 2011.
Jacques Villeneuve may have been too over-aggressive for his own good but he was damn fun to watch.
Correct me if Im wrong, didnt he run in F1?
@@lettucelettucelettuce Yes. He actually won the 1997 championship.
@@48fanfromky wow thats crazy
@@lettucelettucelettuce He sure did. Villeneuve is also an Indy 500 winner.
He had plenty of talent but did not make a lot of friends during his career.
@@MrBWhite88 I believe Villeneuve is also racing NASCAR Europe right now.
Reed Sorenson was very underrated for quite some time. Should've had more success in NASCAR but kept getting screwed over.
Now he’s a spotter in Xfinity.
Villenuve thought he was still in IndyCar.
They do that all time on restarts.
If this weekend is anything like this with fuel mileage.
It’s gonna be crazy.
62 laps.
Hot topic road America is the most underrated road course in North America
It might honestly be the best and it’s definitely in the top 10
@@TheGreatCornholio. Ever hear of Lime Rock Park? For cup racing it probably wouldnt work, but it puts on quite the show for IMSA
@@zacharyosvald251 I said it might be the best but I can’t think of 9 tracks that are better than road America in North America
@@TheGreatCornholio. Watkins Glen is great
@@WaifuScientistGambler agreed, I still don’t think imsa should go 6 hours there, it’s to short of a layout for endurance racing but none the less it’s one of the best tracks in the world
This race makes me sad yet happy, seeing McDowell wreck out of the win, but seeing Reed Sorensen win makes up for it.
I'm so excited for this weekend race. I am so happy that there is finally a cup race in Wisconsin. And I will be there and be loving it
I'm also from the area. I go to road america races everytime I can. It's truly the best place on earth.
Man I love those Dodge Challengers! 👌
This is exactly what the Xfinity series needs to return to. IMO this season was better than the cup season in 2011
XFINITY always put on a show at road america. The races between 2011-2014 were always great.
I’m honestly excited to see the Cup series race at Road America. It’s always been a fun race to watch in Xfinity.
I will be there tomorrow.
@@sludge4125 Same.
@@dairylandsportswi We had a great time on Friday!!
Oh yeah, I remember watching that race when I was 10
Same here and I was 18
I was there it was pretty nuts
@@joeymayorjr8240 man oh man, I bet
I was 11 years old going into age 12 and I just finished 5th grade.
Perhaps the craziest NASCAR race in recent memory. No rain, no whackers, road ringers, a fuel mileage race, and a revolving door up front.
And don’t even get me started on the last 10 laps + the OTs, absolutely amazing.
That was a great Nascar Nationwide series race at Road America ten years ago in 2011 and this is a fantastic video from the Iceberg and that is awesome Nascar will be racing at Road America this Sunday
When I saw that 32 car I flashed back to 7 year old me all I remembered was Reed won in a crazy way. Thanks for the refresher lol
I think I saw part of this race when we stopped at a pub somewhere in the midwest in 2011 on our road trip back home from a 2 year stint in NJ.
I hadn't heard of the track at the time and for sure I look back at it now and see the amazement of this specific race
I just watched that race not too long ago.
The way Allgaier lost this race was brutal.Running out of fuel while under caution on the final lap.
McDowell won there in 2016 for RCR
nascar actually made the right decision for once. What a shock
I think Vilneuve forgot the track narrowed up at the point he went off, but the man was a freaking maniac in a stock car
The whole day at Road America was crazy. In the Rolex Sports Car Series race, a Camaro had brake problems, crashed into a Mazda, and went over the fence at turn 1
Didn’t that car actually clear the fence at the end of the front stretch?
@@2themoon863 yea he did
The beating and banging is the best part. So much better than mile and a halfs.
One of my favorite road america races i ever went to can't wait to be there for the weekend
Funny how things work out, both Michael McDowell and Justin Allgaier let a potential win slip away at Road America in 2011, but Michael McDowell would return to Road America 5 years later and win in the Xfinity Series there in 2016, and Justin Allgaier got his Road America win 2 years later in 2018.
5:25, Kasey Kahn did the same thing earlier in that race, but NASCAR didn't say or do anything about it
I like the way the xfinity cars have looked in the past 10 years. The Supra and challenger really showed off some make and model individuality. I want that in cup.
I listened to the mrn radio/motor racing network 'classic races' broadcast of this race as a podcast a few hours ago
Feel bad for Sorensen, I don’t know if it was that season or a season after but from what I remember he was nationwide points series leader for a good portion of the season but then didn’t have enough sponsorship to continue with his team. Who knows that could’ve been a potential resurgence in his career.
Love living 20 miles away from the track😬
Made the trip from Alabama. What a great state to have racing events. Beautiful state! plenty of things to do before and after the race. Heading to slinger for srx! Lest go Hailey!
We All Remember This Race. This Race Was Fantastic
It's still a massive shame sponsorship issues costed Reed Sorenson a potential Nationwide Series Championship in 2011. He was definitely having a career year that season prior to his release from Turner, could never recover after that sadly
I was at Victory lane after this race. Reed Sorenson had to go into the woods behind the podium to throw up before getting interviewed. I dunno if he was exhausted or nerves or what.
Michael won at Road America in 2016
This is how the Cup race is about to go. Gonna take an hour to run the last 2 laps
Love all this road racing
I actually watched this race to prep myself for this weekend
People also forget Reed was fired from that ride a few races later.
It seems like Road Course races in the Nationwide Series from 2010-2013 were all pretty exciting and memorable
4:44 it wasn’t HScott, it was Turner Motorsports in 2011
"There were no cup drivers in the field" *ten seconds later* "Michael McDowell had the pole" (he ran all but two cup races that season).
I'm really excited for this race!
Those dodges looked so good.
The challenger Xfinity car was so badass looking
Thanks you Jacque ... good job.” - Max Papis
That was a boneheaded move by Villneuve.
Of course not. They penalized the winner, who was a part-timer, so a series regular could take the win. They just cannot resist the temptation to manipulate a race when they get the chance. It isn't a sport -- it's "entertainment" -- the E in WWE.
Cup at Road America should be interesting.
NASCAR says HELLO WISCONSIN!
I was hoping somebody would make a video on this
That was such a fun race
I remember being there on turn 12.
They made the right call by putting the 7 behind the 32. He could’ve easily been put to the last car on the lead lap just like The yellow line debacle at Daytona and Talladega
ITS PRONOUNCED VILL NERVE
Jacques Villneuve on the first GWC: Oh yeah, now the real fun begins!! (Wrecks Brian Scott and Max Papis)
Max Papis: You'll pay for that!!!!
I'm Excited to watching of NBC Xfinity and Cup Series NASCAR racing at Road America.
I remember this wacky race. Always enjoyed watching Ron Fellows, he was one of my favorite Canadians to cheer for. Definitely his mistake at the end passing Sorenson under yellow, I think NASCAR made the right call. I never knew what to think of Jacques Villeneuve on the other hand, he was entertaining to watch but way too aggressive and prone to bone head moves
I've always liked Ron Fellows from Canada. If he didn't make that little mistake he probably would of beat Reed Sorseen. Reed career was totally screwed up. I think he was a good racer..
Does anybody else ever rewatch NASCAR on ESPN races only to find yourself watching the bottom line looking at old scores and headlines? 😂
They should have told Allgaier to back if down while he was leading by a bit.
I was there! My first NASCAR race
I was at that race it was a such a good weekend
If only Sorenson didn't piss off Dollar General lol
Sorenson won at WWT Raceway in 2005 and 2007.
Nascar made the wrong call every time a race finishes under caution
Reed was such a talented driver man wish he got another shot in cup
NASCAR did make the right call
I was hoping that McDowell would win that day.
People forget he could have won the title that year if Turner didn't fire him him Vickers
Why McDowell could win this weekend
Haha he won’t.
@@TreyK54 hes won at road America before
@@TreyK54 2003/2004/2016 Win 🤷🏻♂️
I remember this face vividly
I couldn't stand Villeneuve because the guy couldn't run a race without making some stupid move which would in turn cost him a victory. The idiot couldn't win any of the races he ran because he had no clue how to race clean.
I'm going to the cup race this sunday
Timmy Hill finish P11 :)
RIP Jason Leffler
It has not been since 1956 since the Cup series has been to Road America the year is 1965 since they been there.
Fellows broke the rule though, I think.
I think if Sorenson slowed down too much, then Fellows should win.
I miss Dodge!
32 team screwed Sorensen out of a 2011 championship
Reed SOreNsOn wAItiNg iN tHe wINgs
i miss Alan Bestwick calling nascar races
Poor McDowell
You skipped over the fact the two that almost won this race would go on to win in 2016 and 2018.
I was there, it was a great race.
Wish f1 would do road America but that’s never gonna happen
Typo in your info
“I’m” instead of “In”
Bonehead move by Fellows. If only he drove at the caution pace instead of speeding ahead…
Why does the top comment always have to be a spoiler??
Milwaukee Mile > Road America
The way he pronounced Villeneuve makes me uncomfortable
Nascar....with a wreck filled multi green white checker finish....never. 🤮🤮🤮
Every one look out for a shoe that's all I am gonna say if you know you know
