The 1994 Jeep Wrangler YJ that was rescued from a junkyard returns for bigger 1-ton axles and giant 40-inch tires. On this episode of Dirt Every Day presented by Tire Rack watch as Fred Williams and Dave Chappelle transform their Junkyard Jeep into a trail monster, and then head to the desert with some other Jeepers to see how well it rockcrawls.

Talk about burning your fan base. 6.5 million subscribers and only 345,000 views in three months. These guys have pissed off all their fans so bad, nobody’s even watching the free episodes when they launch them. Good job motortrend. Bravo!
Videos like this are perfect for us broke people who prefer to buy old jeeps rather than pay to watch motortrend
I miss you Dave and Fred on You Tube. Thank you for the free show.
When is Dave going to show us his R/C rock crawlers?
I will enjoy this free episode! But I still won’t be purchasing motor trend on demand :) thanks
Amen
They are running a one dollar per month special right now. I'm in for 12 bucks.
That’s actually a good deal. Still probably won’t do it but much better than the 8 or 9 a month it normally is
@@bghouse2853 its 4.99 a month bro dizzle
Bummer it’s not on UA-cam anymore but Its cheap and good content.
I love that these past 2 episodes have been back on UA-cam...and this build especially, since it's very much a budget minded junkyard parts centric build...I'd love to know what the total budget cost was, and hopefully you guys mention it by the end of the episode...
Johnny Cliche atleast 5 or 6 grand
This is a past episode from December of last year.
@nicholas- they probably paid 5 or 6 grand for each axel
They paid almost 4 grand for the Jeep
@@getchasome6230 1500 tops for each
Makes me miss the old days of free d.e.d
HAHA DED. I still quote that all the time.
The Intro music brings back good memories of when episodes where free :(
Free Dirt Everyday just like the old days...…………...
There is still a free episode on the Motor Trend on Demand website every 4 weeks. (Using a desktop, or laptop computer)
Wish there were clean Jeep's like this in Michigan for projects.
Facebook a guy named Chris Fitzpatrick from Memphis mi
14:50 your motortrend commercial within a motortrend commercial got interrupted by a ... commercial! lol
I'm just here because its free.
Game Bred Duramax I know how it works. Wish they’d release them all 3 or 4 months later on UA-cam. Hit both markets that way.
Game Bred Duramax don’t forget when they had the contract with Netflix and had that revenue. Which is why they pulled all the old free episodes that were on this channel they sold to Netflix.
Agreed
Snobs at ultimate adventure, that jeep is cool.
25:25 Fred: "Want me to spot?“ Just goes and sits in the shade! LOL
Your ability to do the kinds of "conversions" is incredible. Keep it up !!!
Isham is no joke for us modest jeepers. Made it up the last obstacle/waterfall in my YJ, last November at Panamint Valley days, then blew the rear driveshaft yoke apart in that v-cut left turn. Definitely looking forward to going back and beating that trail sometime soon.
Awesome that you guys are posting vids here again. Keep ‘em coming.
Aside from the 4.88's pretty sweet build. 40's would really benefit from 5.38's to get the power back to stock or a bit better than stock.
This show and roadkill were awesome.
@@mctigmctiggy1475 exactly
25:30 "You want me to spot" translates to: "I don't want to be in this Jeep anymore" 🤣
Bring this back to UA-cam!
A major benefit of a spring-under setup is that it helps control axle wrap. Axle wrap likes to kill u-joints.
Thank you motortrend for finally freeing up some of these amazing guys content. Truly artisans. Moaaaaaar please =)
If you have a desktop, or laptop computer and live in the US (Or some other countries) You can watch episode 96 for free right now, on the Motor Trend on Demand website. (Episode 97 will be free this Monday, January 6th. Episode 98 will be free 4 weeks after that)
Only reason I’d consider buying the subscription is to support Dave and Fred. Solid dudes.
Thanx Dave & Fred
I love you guys! Y’all inspired my Jeep purchase which subsequently lead to my husbands Jeep and on to our YT channel! Thank you for inspiring me to chase my adventure!
Love the Jeep it's a realistic budget build
Dirt Every Day is probably an awesome enough of a show to get me to buy your motor trend deal or whatever, this show is so rad. Really getting the itch for a trail rig again
Love the name of the Jeep. Glad to know I'm not the only Dirthead around.
Keep up the full episodes!
Great episode. But the last thing this world needs is ANOTHER video subscription service.
“The West wasn’t won on coil overs. “ 😂
4:08 - Just keep jumping to this and listen to that impact with your eyes closed.
... Lewd..
Needs a bit more gear. I would of went with 5.13, 5.42, 5.67s. With 37s on my YJ and 5.42s on tons it’s better than factory ever thought about being power wise. 👍 laying a posi patch grabbing 2nd with 37s it runs 💪
Nice build! Lottery would be you two helping a viewer customize their own truck!
Hey Fred and Dave.....Yinz should come to the Bantam Hertiage Jeep Fest in Bulter Pa Birth Place of the Jeep.....June of 2020.
Here, here!
i couldn't stop smiling the whole time. I love yjs
The Junkyard YJ used to be my favorite DED build. Until now.
I had a 1992 jeep wrangler from a junkyard ran like a top until a year later no oil pressure after going to haspin acres
daniel davis was it the sending unit?
No oil pressure I had a regular oil gauge on it no leaks and still stayed at zero at idle
nice - 40's and tons. Did pretty darn well for a budget build. I love this show
Now that I own 3 jeeps I wish I learned the skills these guys have . I have to do the same thing to my axles on my 99 tj . It has a 35 and 30 and I want to offroad it more than it can handle
really like to see this channel like before, real video like this full episode. hope will be alot more video coming soon..
I miss this being free and I also like how they make it look easy as if it’s plug and play but they don’t show the hard tedious stuff like running brake lines and bleeding the brakes
Nicely done, but needs a rear anti-wrap bar bad - with a proper length anti-wrap that rear suspension woulda calmed down & you may have been able to get a smooth bump at & over that last climb.
7:15....Dave, Fred...I have a high 'pinion of you both 😉
JUNKYARD JEEPIN!!! Such a Rad Jeep! You guys rock!
I miss all the free episodes.
atlast a free episode of this show!
I am impressed that it still the same tires and rims as the original episode....
I'm patient and I wait for the FREE shows. :)
man i loved this show and roadkill
I listed my YJ for sale a week ago.... now this episode comes out and I remember why I don't want to sell it.
That jeep is neat. Mainly because of where you got it lol. You guys should do something with that red/white chevy sometime
I'll say it again, miss ya Fred and Dave Motortrend... your website sucks, put adds in the episodes all us gear heads will sit through em.
If you don't like the website, or the mobile app, if you have Amazon Prime, you can pay the extra $5 for Motortrend on Prime.
As allways Dave's fab work is on point. 🤟😎
Correction. A locker doesn't send the same power to both tires, it just makes them turn the same speed, regardless of the power applied. An open diff sends the same amount of torque to both tires, limited by the lower traction tire. If the lower traction tire can only plant 20lbs of force, it'll only apply 20lbs of force to the side with more traction.
Enjoyed the episode. I will happily watch ad supported content but I cut the cable for a reason. Dirt every day was one of those shows that let me give the cable company the middle finger... then MTOD came out and tried to become the cable company...
You can still watch the 3rd latest episode for free every 4 weeks on the Motor Trend on Demand website. However, you have to use a desktop, or laptop computer.
Missed the days where I would binge watch dirt everyday for FREE
I have MT on my TV but never watch it. I watch UA-cam so it's the only time I watch it. Lol
The only full episode released anymore is just an ad for your ad trip
Would love to have 1 tons under my YJ, great build...
Bring back Dirt Every Day!
Even though HUGE tires are heavy, they are easy to mount!
Did they successfully swap in the JKR transfer case? They didn’t mention it after it showed up.
Great episode. Thanks!
Commercials upon commercials upon commercials
That guy said this Jeep wasnt good enough then he gets stuck and the crappy Jeep didn't
Crappy-jeep is a oxymoron
@@niks983 no it isn't.
@@gs6810 fer sure it definitely is man, haven't you ever watched any recovery videos?
It's usually a POS looking xj pulling out a expensive rig.
That dude seems like a prick
are we ever gunna see a update on the blue crewcab OBS Ford monster truck ???? that beauty needs to be refeatured on a episode SOON....
Fred sold it. Pretty sure they sold this Jeep after this episode too
@@jwoodsrt NOOOOOOOO....well thats sad end to that project... i thought they said they wouldnt sell it...
Right? The F354 and Junkyard YJ were a couple of my favorites
The best Jeep , YJ!!!
"the heater works" you're in the middle of the desert lol
Desert gets cold at night
With no roof or doors 😂
It was 32 degrees the other day in Phoenix and it was 39 degrees that same morning in Chicago where I used to live, it's crazy man. When the desert gets hot, it gets hot. When it get's cold, it's cold!
Bring back dirt every once in awhile
I'd love to have the tires you took off that jeep for mine lol
Milestar is giving all these off-road channels Patagonia MT tires for free like crazy. Free advertising I guess.
I'll watch this here on UA-cam in the hopes that you'll bring your content back here.
MORE FREE EPISODES
You can watch free episodes of most of the Former UA-cam shows on the Motor Trend on Demand website every 4 weeks. (Using a desktop, or laptop computer. New episodes are usually released every Monday)
Need big enough motor to pull those bigger tires as well. Unless you do not like using low gear all the time. But on the road days that would suck wouldn't it? You would think with that much room for added height they could've found a way to keep the steering tie rod from being in front of the front axle so it wouldn't get beat up on the rocks and end up making the tires point in from one another after getting bend on the rocks.
And there hasn’t been a new episode of roadkill garage in months
cracking up watching dave get beat up on that ledge
Love the simplicity of this build! I actually have the same very similar. But did you guys do anything for steering? I can’t turn 41s with a locker. My steering assist is not working properly? How did this jeep turn with stock steering? Love the show thanks!
I would get a motortrend subscription if it wasn't geolocked in New Zealand. Any chance it wont be in the future?
Favorite episode of DED
What's ironic is this show would probably make way more money showing it for free on UA-cam with add sence and sponsors then the very few people that have motor trend subscriptions
Scott Babcock how many people have motor trend subscriptions? You mentioned very few..how do you know?
@@TheFouledplug there reach on UA-cam would be far greater no matter what that is obvious
Who thinks Tube-sock needs to go on ultimate adventures?
YOU GUYS FORGOT THE ROCK SLIDERS , NICE JEEP YJ AFTER ALL , SWEET
Great show guys sorry not willing to pay to watch your shows there is too much free on UA-cam, you do have a great show if I was willing to pay for TV I would watch your show, ask your advertisers to do the paying and many of us would watch your show
Some custom links (I've used shocks) to dampen axle wrap makes most of that brain rattling drive train hammering go away. Wind the spring, & POP it loose ! hmmm?
I would love to have a Jeep like this.
Only reason i stopped was cause of the app. They seemed yo be doing just fine before with sponsor and youtube revenue.
I love this. I think I'll cancel my amazon prime and get this.
If you want to keep Prime, you can pay the extra $5 a month, and watch them on Prime as well. (Through Motortrend on Prime)
I have motortrend but its more satisfying watching it here
Appsolultly love this show. But 2 free full episodes ?? I guess Motor Trend TV isn’t doing as well as expected.
Graham Oldreive Full, not free
@@jonasthemovie they are free. I never paid for them.
Connor Twomey Did you have an ad before the video? Maybe in video?
Should have put 538 gears and not 488
The feeling you must get when a free episode on UA-cam gets more views than your paid for app
You know it's important to have a Jeep in Los Angeles. That front wheel drive is crucial when it starts to snow on Rodeo Drive.
STEEL RESERVE
bring motortrend back to youtube!
thank you
" We want some variety." Almost everything is an R2.8 Cummins or a JK/JKU, so yea tons of variety.
This year in Alaska, they had International Scouts, a Dodge Ram, a Jeep TJ or LJ Wrangler, as well as newer JKs & JLs so they did have a pretty good variety.
@@AndrewAMartin I totally agree with you about the 2019 Ultimate Adventure. That was pretty cool.
@@AndrewAMartin Anything Toyota or Nissan or Land Rover or BMW or
@@donewhiskey Maybe a Taco or two? I honestly don't remember, you're better off checking out the video yourself...
@@AndrewAMartin No, I mean I would like to see some serious variety.
You're right I never take anything used on a trail I have to have the most expensive beautiful-looking Jeep so I'm the best looking man out there....lmfao
I Wait for the free episode every time, because I still don’t want to by motor trend on demand
Classic fords It is a full episode. Not a free episode.
I think they found the limitation of those cheaper tires
You mean that you can bold a 241r to an ax15 with out an adapter?
Detroit Lockers do NOT send power equally to both sides at all times. Power equals Torque x RPM and a Detroit Locker allows up to 100% of the torque and power to go to the wheel with traction and 0% of the torque to the wheel with no traction.
So Detroit Lockers:
1. Allow up to 100% of the torque and power to go to the wheel with traction. This means that even if 1 wheel is completely off the ground, instead of that wheel spinning rapidly it just spins at the same speed as the wheel on the ground and the wheel on the ground gets all of the torque, driving you forwards (or reverse if you're in reverse).
2. Ensure the wheel RPM is at least the same as the ring gear's RPM. A Detroit has essentially a ratcheting system built in that allows a wheel to spin faster than the ring gear, but not slower. When a wheel spin faster than the ring gear (like when going around a corner when there is good traction and the outside wheel spins faster than the inside wheel due to it taking a longer path) you can actually hear the clicking of the ratchet system. So going around a corner without "gunning it" you will hear this fairly quiet "click", "click", "click"... until you straighten out.
3. Similar to how you can change direction of a ratchet to tighten and loosen bolts, a Detroit Locker's ratcheting system can also change direction. The way it works is when you shift from a forward gear (like Drive) to a reverse gear (like Reverse) there is a bit of "slop" in the Detroit Locker (the ring gear rotates slightly without either of the axle shafts or wheels turning). This slop isn't actually slop, but it is how the Detroit switches the ratchet direction. One of the downsides to this is you will hear a bit of a "clunk" when you switch from drive to reverse and vice versa.
4. Every now and then Detroit Lockers will be 1/2way between the forward ratcheting direction and the reverse ratcheting direction while you go around a corner (or are off-roading on rough terrain). When this happens you'll sometimes here a horrible and very loud "SNAP" sound as the ratchet pops between directions. Luckily, although it sounds like total destruction has occurred, Detroit Lockers seem to be able to handle these "Snaps" without damage. My truck is running Detroit's (and 4.88:1 gears) in both the front and rear and I've heard that loud "SNAP" probably 100's of times without any sign of damage.
I'm actually running a Dana 60 in the front and a GM Corporate 14 bolt "full floater" in the rear of my Chevy K20 (just like they installed in this Jeep) and I have to agree with them that this is an awesome combination if you want a strong, reliable setup with excellent off-road functionality. I used to break axle components, but in 1998 I installed the Dana 60 and it has been rock stolid reliable ever since.
