Correction: London Studios was not working on any VR titles. They actually only produced one VR game (blood and truth) and the VR demo disc before that. They were currently working on a flat-screen live service game. No VR plans at all.

"PCVR is not really popular...". Right, that's why there are so many mods being made to actually have what Sony had been promising before launch - hybrid games. And that's why those mods are so popular. If only multiplatform vr games really took advantage of the power PCs offer the sales of PC versions would be much higher. But this takes additional times and resources, and it's a lot easier and cheaper to just conform to the low baseline that quest creates and just have more or less the same quality ports. And you have more or less the same, then many people will choose quest version, either if only for convenience.
And for why Sony pushed out psvr2 at all? Easy, they had pretty solid plans for it and the desire to back it up with 1st party titles as well as deals with 3rd parties (like e.g. Capcom) to create hybrid games. The ambition was to even have vr modes at launch with players being able to choose how they want to play, switching from one to the other. These were a little overly ambitious plans, especially when we remember that when covid had hit and everything gotten more complicated and difficult. Sales as well were awful, due to lack of supply and many people suddenly not having money to spare and adopt the systems early. So the player base wasn't there to support new exclusive vr sony games and the plans had to change.
They could at least mitigate this a little by having psvr2 be PC compatible from the start but they had slept too long on it and then Q3 came out which is a very compelling competition from the company that tries to support it with exclusives. And if somebody already had Q3 and even better - vr ready PC as well, it's hard to justify buying another headset.

I'm also somewhat baffled why Sony launched PSVR 2 without any apparent plan to support it with first-party software.
To be clear though, Sony is actually supporting it, just by paying other people to make or port games for it. They paid Capcom for both Resident Evil ports, they likely entirely financed Synapse, Switchback, and Firewall Ultra (oof). They've also partially financed a bunch of indie games, like Legendary Tales, and have probably put at least a bit of funding into future titles like Metro VR and Alien Rogue Incursion.
So Sony didn't completely abandon it, but one of the most baffling things to me is, why aren't they telling anyone about the support they ARE giving the hardware?! It's almost like they're going out of their way to give the impression they've given up on it, when more people might've considered buying one if they knew Sony was paying to bring decent quality games to it on an ongoing basis.

I think Sony is keeping their toes dipped in the water. They don't want to be the company to bleed money driving VR forward, but they also don't want to get left behind when VR takes off. I think Sony does foresee VR becoming a big thing, but it's a matter of when. So in the meantime, they're just keeping their VR support warm, gaining experience and expertise, but not investing in it heavily. Playing a conservative strategy and leaving their future options open.

I think that there's been a concerted effort to downplay PSVR2 and what it's roll in the PS ecosystem is by people outside of the PS community. Anyone who has a PS5 can attest that the PSVR2 is and has been featured prominently in Sony's PS store and they have most certainly made VR a part of their marketing in thier State of Play presentations. However, the biggest problem VR as a whole faces is that it doesn't generate the kinds money that is needed for big budget triple A titles, which is why Valve has only created Half Life Alyx and has left the growth of VR to third party....it is why Metaquest just recently started buying studios to create "first party" games and has largely survived on third party support and with PSVR2.....the VR community saw a major publisher who has a vested interest in attracting players to thier platform and they thought that Sony would become the champion for triple A VR games. I don't think that is the way Sony saw the PSVR2, which is why they have a periphal that cost more than the console needed to use it. Sony sees VR as an alternative for PS gamers who have an interest in VR to not needing a standalone unit or an expensive PC for VR....they never intended for PSVR2 to be the champion of mainstreaming VR and I think the community have dubbed PSVR2 a failure but I think Sony sees it as an alternative to what's already out there. Because the VR community has thrown its lack of triple A gaming at the feet of Sony and said it is on you to create triple A VR games, Sony has responded with a vision of VR that is very internal to the PS platform.....and clearly that makes alot of non PS VR fans mad. PSVR2 was never about VR being mainstream for Sony or getting the masses of PS gamers to adopt VR, it was always going to be about supplementing thier existing catalog of games with the VR experience and to contribute to VR as the need mandates. In its first year Sony has experiences that are unique to its platform prominently but the VR community who don't have access to PS5 or PSVR2 and even those that do have access.....have worked tirelessly to downplay Sony's VR offering at every turn. RE8 VR is best played on PSVR2 and PS5 but PC VR players will say they have it on PC except it's not the same thing at all. Same for RE4 with Metaquest users comparing the 2023 GOTY nominee remake to the 2005 port released on thier platform. We pretend Legendary tales doesn't exist....Synapse is seen as not a PS game even though it was prominently featured in State of Play and largely funded by Sony... Switchback released in a poor state and people will never forget that even though it is much better now. People love to attribute Firewall Ultra to Sony and it's failure has been the marching cry for fanboys who have said it's the only game Sony has brought to the headset outside of the sparse launch titles. Speaking of launch titles....its wild how many people loved The Climb but hate Horizon Call of the Mountain....PC players make it a point to make sure everyone knows that they have VR driving games even though none are nearly as popular or as polished as GT7. Like I said....people wanted Sony to champion triple A VR gaming and it has not sat right with them that they only intended that for PS5 owners who see VR as a supplement to the flat screen main course.

    • @SargonDragon
      @SargonDragon Місяць тому +1

@@corey_massey I agree. It seems like either Sony has to be pushing 1st party AAA titles and outselling Quest or the PSVR2 is a total failure and Sony is pulling out of VR. Black or white.
And I agree that most of the bashing comes from outside of the PS community. Commentators constantly complain that "You have to buy a PS5 to use PSVR2" and then add the cost of the PS5 to the headset for any comparison, but don't include the cost of the PC when discussing PCVR. Since "obviously" everyone already has a PC, and the PC has other uses, while the PS5 itself is considered an expensive paperweight apparently.
When you look at the price of the PSVR2 in full context compared to the rest of the VR industry (not just Quest) and from the standpoint of someone who is already in the PS ecosystem, things look very different. Like PCVR, it's a more powerful system and comparisons to cheaper and less capable mobile VR aren't fair comparisons. And this is where PCVR gets bashed on, too. The PSVR2 should more properly be compared versus PCVR.

PSVR has some really cool titles that would breath a lot of life into the AAA space of VR gaming, but I'm not going to buy one just for that, and especially not when I already have an expensive enough headset for PC. If Sony decided to be less exclusive with this stuff (like they have been lately with their other games), and it gets ported to OpenXR, there is a solid chance we'd see some of this stuff playable with any headset, which is awesome. Here's hoping.

Assassin’s Creed bombed on Quest so I can’t see Sony paying to rebuild Astrobot for mobile graphics. It seems like the only thing that people engage in large numbers on Quest is Gorilla Tag and Beat Saber.
Sony only mentioned giving existing PSVR2 owners access to PCVR games so it’s not any part of their planning to port their VR games to PC at this point.
I suspect that Sony put too much work into GAAS that it temporarily derailed some of their VR initiatives.
Sony London was working on a GAAS game not PSVR2 content. Firesprite is actually working on a PSVR2 game which could be The Persistence 2 or Until Dawn 2. Titles while unknown are getting patched to perfection and there’s a lot of good quality. It only will take 2-3 exceptional Sony first party hits to resurrect PSVR2 sales and then a lot of the games already there will hook new players. Legendary Tales and Hellsweeper are pretty fantastic as is Ancient Dungeon.

If psvr2 gets pc support, will it mean it's going to be through a Windows only app that handles the encoding stuff for USB-C?
Eg.: we end up with a situation like what we have for the Quest devices (Oculus Link)?
What is needed for this to work on Linux? I guess a simple HDMI input would be our best bet?! Not talking about a specific headset, just easy plug and play OS agnostic support.

    • @Nighthunt01

it would be Windows only most likely, don't think any Sony games natively support Linux or MacOS...as far as connection wise must be USB-C since it doesn't support wireless. @@Nighthunt01 Thanks for your input. ✌️
My main concern with this is the actual need of a mandatory extra app to handle the data conversion part. Would be nice if it was something like USB-C alt mode (eg the display port variant), or what's it called, where you can power a device and get a high res video output as well with only a single USB C connection.
But this is most probably not the case since I haven't really seen a GPU that actually supports this and to my knowledge we don't really have easy to use options like this in PC space.
The Linux part is.. *_sigh_* my Quest is the last device / thing that kinda locks me into Windows.
That's why I occasionally boot it up..
My next headset will probably come from Valve. 🙂 I'm just interested in this topic.

The screens in VR are trying to take up as much of your sight as possible for the sake of immersion. Putting letterboxing on the VR screens would just make it look like you're looking at the world through some sort of mask with rectangular eye holes. So yes, immersion would definitely suffer.
Also, the perspective you get in VR is already somewhat wider than it is tall, because you've got two eyes side by side seeing the world through an offset perspective.
You'd gain some performance from rendering less of the scene every frame, but imo it's not worth the hit to immersion.

If they do day and date releases, I'll be even more completely baffled. Do they really think anyone would be buying a PS6 if all their games go to pc and they're supposed to pitch to third parties to make ports for it. Heck, what makes them think people will continue to invest in their current console if the consumer becomes well aware that all their games go to pc.
