Were barely got anything "Next Gen" in the last 3.5 years to justify the current consoles so for a lot of people to buy into another 5-600 dollar price tag for a mid gen refresh seems unrealistic. I don't think this mid gen refresh is going to see the kind of success the xb1x and ps4pro saw.
A lot of consumers are making the jump to PC over the last few years which further compounds the console sales woes.
Ultimately until we see a steady flow of high impact titles to win back consumer confidence, I see the console market remaining stagnant.

It's like the whole industry is waiting for GTA 6 for "next gen" to finally arrive.
But for the most part the more powerful hardware has been spent on 4K target output & performance modes, even with upscaling tech. It's better, but nothing that makes you think "we haven't seen this before'
And everything's getting so expensive of course people are cutting back on non essentials.

Yeah this is definitely it. I remember going from PS2 to Xbox 360 and being genuinely stunned. That just doesn't happen anymore and probably won't ever again. The less dramatic the leap the less enticing the console becomes. The console manufacturers want to keep the consoles relevant with mid gen refreshes (which also generates sales) but it's really in their interest to let the consoles become obsolete so that the new one's actually have something to offer. Look at everyone clamoring for a switch 2 because the first one isn't powerful enough now. Nintendo knows what they're doing.

It's the perfect storm of circumstance:
    - pandemic-induced supply issues compounded by scaplers at the launch of new consoles, delaying the time people get their hands on them
    - lacklusture, often buggy games, and not enough of them.
    - lack of disposable income, meaning people hold on to older hardware and games
    - consoles now 3.5 years old meaning they're not exactly cutting-edge, yet prices haven't meaningfully dropped

Yep, there's nothing really appealing about the current consoles, be it hardware itself or the lackluster games that are being released on them. As such and with the last gen consoles still being catered for and with a lot of those gamers still playing on less demanding but well established games (especially the big hitting online games like Fortnite, Destiny 2 ect), then there's simply not enough incentive for those console gamers to even bother upgrading to a current gen console.
Even on PC a simular situation applies, where fewer and fewer gamers are bothering to upgrade. This is due either to being held back by having a limited budget and the current sky high prices of GPU's or again them simply feeling theres absolutely no need to. Since likewise they too are also mostly playing on the same or simular less demanding titles, where an older GPU/CPU is more than sufficient.
And in that situation I can completely understand thier stance. If your older system/hardware is still good enough for the games that you mostly play on and it's still being supported, then why would you even bother in upgrading it?
It also, doesn't help with us being in the middle of a worldwide economic downturn. Where affording basic items like food and paying off the bills matters far more, than buying an expensive luxury item like a new console, a new video card or even another poorly made generic or re-hashed AAA game for $70.
I guarantee unless things drastically change and change pretty quickly in the videi game industry, then there's going to be another major gaming crash, happening very soon. The writing about it's arrival has been on the wall for quite a while, now.

Consoles are going through a very tough phase I think. It’s still got a lot of players but I feel like consoles peaked in their traditional format, and it may be a bumpy ride to figure out what the future of consoles/gaming looks like. It is interesting that a lot of the major franchises are typically getting quite old now. Some still have big appeal, Zelda does well, Grand Theft Auto is obvious, but some things like Halo seem to have lost big traction. I’m approaching 40 and remember when most of the big franchises came out, but do younger gamers care about them? I keep up to date with the news but I don’t actually play that many games at all these days. Games are probably getting too complicated and too costly, and when they only end up releasing one or two big franchise titles over many years there’s a real lack of hype.

F2P and Live Service changed the landscape and users simply aren't needing to move to new hardware very often. Like as it stands over 60% of played time in gaming is on titles that are 6+ years old like Faortnite, GTA Online, Roblox, LoL etc. and only 8% of time played is on new games. I teach digital arts and digital design. So I get a lot of students that are interested in tech and gaming etc. I think there are a few factors: the first is the economics. Most families don't have as much expendable income as they did 5 years ago. I believe the second factor is mobile phones. Most students are sucked into their phones. Most young people are on social media more than anything else. Their current hobbies are more often to watch other people have hobbies than to have them themselves. There's more kids watching streamers and influencers then playing games themselves. And of those that do have games a lot of them are on mobile or on a switch or on a PS4 or on a Nintendo Wii. There's a lot of last Gen gaming happening or mobile gaming happening. The final Factor that I observe is that many young people haven't played any of the big Sony games. They haven't even heard of the big Xbox games. And well they might be big fans of the old Nintendo properties, there just aren't that many new games that are getting people excited. I literally never hear about young people talking up the next new game. If there's any hype at all it's in the PC space and it's a very niche audience. Not a lot of young people have a good enough PC to be an enthusiast for PC gaming. But honestly that's where most of the gamers of this generation seem to play. I would say that the typical gamer of this upcoming generation has either a Nintendo switch and a PC or they have a Wii or a PS4. That's it. Beyond that we almost never hear of PS5 or Xbox Series consoles being in people's homes. At least the ones that I talk to.

Retro gaming on the other hand is seeing a massive surge in popularity... My take on this is that the middle-aged gamers that have been around since day 1, are deserting the console space as they no longer have the time to spend on increasingly grind-focussed games, and, instead, have pivoted towards the golden days of 'pick up and play' arcade gaming. I am definitely one of those people choosing this path, namely spending my money on a arcade cabinet setup whilst my PS5 sits there and gathers dust...

If Sony wants the PS5 to sell as much as the PS4, they need to cut the price or build a cheaper version of it.

AMD ought to make APUs for consumers at reasonable prices that can form the basis of competition with consoles. Steam OS or Chimera OS on an APU comparable to the XBSX or PS5, or even the XBSS, would be pretty appealing IMO as an alternative to console gaming.

The problem is you can't BUILD an APU like that to be BOTH socketable in a standard motherboard, AND affordable. Part of the thing that makes consoles work from an ENGINEERING perspective is how tightly integrated they are. So either they would have to sell you a weaker system in terms of a socketed APU but a fairly standardized motherboard, or you're buying the whole thing from them, which is an SoC, NOT an APU, and it's _still_ going to be more than a console because they're not making money on the back end like a Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, or even Valve.

They have a lot of applications in games and even more so in the prosumer software space. Combined with the RT cores they have seen massive uplifts in many workloads like the 3d rendering space while also offering the best upscaling and ray tracing experience in games. AMD doesn't take the prosumer space serious enough. If they ever truly want to compete with Nvidia then this is an area they need to prioritize. Not just at a hardware level either. They need to work closely with the big creative software companies to implement and optimize for their hardware like Nvidia does. They have the money to do this now and they don't have to make it from scratch like Nvidia did. The likes of the 7900xt and xtx would have sold significantly better if they were up to scratch with the features and software support of Nvidia. The average Joe isn’t gonna bother with “emulation”. People want good games on a convenient platform where they can just plug and play.People also want games they can enjoy. Only Nintendo seems to care about the “good games” part recently. They spend less and still make amazing games. While Playstation spends unreasonable amount of money on every game to showcase its “capabilities” while making less games for the ps5

That is really bad news. But I have felt that this generation has been really underwhelming. I bought a series X and then sold it after Halo Infinite as Halo Infinite was not great and there was no other good xbox exclusives coming. I kept the PS5 and as many games had free PS5 upgrades I bought the PS4 boxed copy and played both versions. I struggled to tell the difference between the PS4 and PS5 versions. Even PS5 only games seem to be the last gen engines with little or no improvements to physics, destructability and AI. Some games like Starfield have all the AI and daily schedules removed from their NPCs making them shop dummies that hardly move. The xbox series x Starfield gameworld feels less alive than the xbox 360 skyrim gameworld. Personally I think GTA 6 will re-ignite the console market and finally give people a real reason to buy a new console. Consoles are media players and now the media you like can take 7 years to make.

The fact that companies expect for there to be Constant growth even after their main audience has already bought one or more of their products, is sad and sick.
It's a sign that they aren't prepared for healthy spending habits in society and depend on addicted consumers constantly buying more and reaching new audiences to stay afloat. No wonder why so many companies unnecessarily fail.
They should be prepared for plateaus and drops once consoles have sold millions. When it comes to PC, AM4 is just so good that people have no need to upgrade, even with new GPUs (which is how producfs SHOULD be made) and it happens to fall alongside an economic slump lol. What did they expect?

Shorter games = less time needed to make it = more time to polish game = smaller budget = more games released = everyone happy? I don't say I would like to see again games with 6-8 hours campaign but it makes mi sick when I hear about another game with vast open world which require 60+ hours to complete it 100%...
About "new" consoles, I personally know people who still play on PS4 and they don't really feel need to buy PS5 because generation leap is so little and there are still new games on PS4. Try to show "PS5 power" to someone who is not invested into game graphics that much as we who subscribe DF. C'mon, there is almost nothing to be impressed. For average gamer modern games look a bit better than older generation at best, and some new games like Rise of Ronin, Dragon's Dogma or Baldur's Gate 3 looks very much PS4-ish.
Currently I'm playing Forza Horizon 2 and I was curious how much difference there was between Xbox One and Xbox 360 versions of this game. There was MASSIVE leap between generation. And now compare Forza Horizon 5 on Xbox One and Series X... Sure, there is clear difference but it's rather details, resolution etc. but new generation is rather mild evolution than revolution. Or I played Days Gone recently. It looks great even 5 years after release date. If you would change some blurry textures and swap checkerboard 4K to native 4K or even some modern res bumper technology this game would be great looking current gen title...

The problem which I have said time and time again is shareholders, if a product is broken or not finished they don’t care release it, they want their investment back, if gta 6 released now it would sell millions of copies, the demand is always there it’s the end product that is suffering because of shareholders. Microsoft don’t give a stuff about the console space that’s why they bought king, they know mobile gaming will supply fill any shortfall in revenue. Shareholders are poisoning the gaming space.

Not a hot take, but gaming studios have long forgotten what makes a game good: FUN FACTOR. People understand that games are fictional, and didn't always expect the hyper-reality current gen consoles are trying to produce. Graphics can ADD to a game, but they can't save a game. So many triple A titles (I'm thinking about God of War) are just straight up boring. I don't want a playable movie or novel. I don't care if I can see accurate reflections while swinging around as SpiderMan. It's such an inconsequential detail. Have you ever awoken on any morning saying, "where's my ray tracing??? I want to be drawn in. I play more Dead Cells than anything, and the PS4 ports have been buggy because Sony doesn't prioritize indie games. I don't think I'll even buy a PS5. I think I'd be perfectly happy with just a Steam Deck. Stop using games to showcase your hardware. Console owners don't care about hardware. They care about the experience.
