  • Magnet fishing? This is a VERY important video to watch if you ever plan to go magnet fishing for treasure. I go over three important things you need to know about, and show you how to get the magnet unhooked from the bottom if it gets snagged.

    Good video I have a thought about how you may improve on your magnet.
    If you find a plastic funnel and a tube of silicone( exterior calking of any type would work fine I'm sure. Cut the wide end of the funnel to the same size as the magnet and the small end the same as the screw shaft on the mag. Because of the eye you would also need to cut down the length of the funnel.(if the eye on your magnet were smaller then it may be slipped over the eye by only cutting a small silt at the small end and feeding the rope through) Now slip the funnel in place and sue tape to reseal the cut. Next tape it to the magnet temporarily while filling the funnel with the silicone. Let it cure for as long as necessary to allow the silicone to set totally, I would think 3-4 weeks in a warm dry location (you don't want it in your living space as it probably isn't good to breath the fumes that will come off)
    I don't do magnet fishing as there is little to no chance of finding much where I live. I do think this would work well and prevent a lot of hang ups GL&HH
    I really hope this helps someone.

    Putting a plastic bottle on end helps too
    Cut off bottom slide rope thru neck heat bottle to form around magnet a little
    Like a upside down funnel
    works well

    Don't forget you can clip on some heavy weights like a bunch of old style sparkplugs or lead weights and slide that down the line until it pops the magnet loose from the backside.

  • @downunderwest2501
    @downunderwest2501 8 років тому

    Give this a try Beau. Feed the end of the rope up inside of that rope for about 12 inches then pull and the rope wont need a knot at all. Also use a cut plastic bottle like a inverted funnel covering the top end of the magnet and ring, this makes it a bit more smooth when pulling and prevents most snagging between rocks.

  • @glenpierce777
    @glenpierce777 8 років тому +25

    Great tips Beau. One more thing, if you get a snag and you're pulling hard on the rope, be careful that it doesn't suddenly come free and shoot back in your face. This sometimes happens with fishing lines and is more common than you would think. Peace out.

    • @SpiritBear12
      @SpiritBear12 8 років тому +4

      +Glen Pierce
      It happens with fishing lines because the fishing pole is bent like a bow and storing energy, as is the fishing line. When your hook suddenly comes free, that bent fishing pole and line will of course spring straight back and that's what helps shoot that hook filled lure out of the water right at you. It's happened to me on more than one occasion. But when yanking on a rope you're not storing that same kind of energy. Also a magnet like that is fairly heavy too, so it's not going to come flying out of the water as easily as a light weight fishing lure tied to really thin stretchy line will.

    • @SpiritBear12
      @SpiritBear12 8 років тому +1

      David Hicks
      OK, new magnet rules.
      Don't tie them to stretchy ropes.
      Don't pull them with ATVs
      Wear a goalie mask in case one flies out of the water.

    Purchasing a manual winch or use your vehicle if you can pull up to the waterway can also be a big help when all other techniques don't work. Been there, done that on several levels. The hobby is fun, when you can get out to do it though.

    Hey Chig... with the braided rope you can create a knotless loop that will NEVER come undone... if you feed the end of the rope into the weave (so the rope end is fed into the center of the rope then pull the main end of the rope. The main rope will tighten up on the rope in the center... (think chinese finger torture) the loop doesn't close and it will never come undone!

      yup, i do that also and see others do it using a pop bottle cut down to create a tapper on the rope pull side of the magnet to help get rid of the flat surfaces to allow it to get over irregular surfaces easier.
      For some night time fun, you can put small glow sticks or small led bobber, zip tied on the inside of the clear bottle half to see it in the water when its clear/semi-clear as you pull it.

    If your dragging against the current and you get caught, you can thread a n empty plastic bottle with a handle onto the line, give out slack,and let it drift out on the current to below where the magnet is caught and it should lift it out also

    what about a masdam rope come along and a nylon sling? you could wrap around any tree, preferably back a tree or two in case of ricochet and if it is a tree, crank out the entire thing if necessary.The nylon sling keeps from girdling the tree, displacing the pressure, chain will kill the anchor tree. Plus if the rope puller is on your rope it can clip to anything that will fit instead of pants. Just remember seeing a 30 inch diameter oak tree going down the river roots and all, with only twigs above the surface is all. I know the puller is another ten pounds to hump but remember, the tree I saw, was going faster than I could run.

    I wonder if you couldn't take a transmission oil fill funnel and put the line through the narrow tip of the funnel and then attach your magnet to the end of the line at the end of the funnel. It would seem to me that the funnel would prevent the magnet from snagging in a tree crotch. Sound feasible guys? ... Jim.

    I doubt you'll see this as it's an old video, but a tip for if you get snagged.,.,.. get a cheap speaker ring magnet and wrap it in duct tape as they break easy, or a thick washer made or steel or iron etc, and attach a rock climbing type cheap clip to it.... when you snag, clip the metal ring onto your rope hold the rope up so it slides down to the snag, just a little flick will get over any hurdles, and the magnet will spring out of the snag and stick to the metal ring. Works everytime.

    Hi Beau.
    Mostly good advice. The only thing different I would suggest is, attach the rope to something on the river bank, not yourself. Theres always something to attach to, wether its a tree, railing, old person or small child, just look around and see.
    So far I've mostly found rubbish, but I've started doing research so hopefully next year, I will find something a little bit more interesting.
    I opted for climbing rope with a breaking strain of 3500kg doubled up, how you tie your knot, and checking the condition of the rope is important. If all is well, I will break before my rope does.
    Stay safe, healthy, happy, contented and making youtube videos my friend.
    Happy new year.

    Easiest way to get magnet or fishing lure back. Have extra rope on hand for this tie a 2 liter bottle 3/4 full of water close as you can to magnet stuck in the water on the magnet fishing rope have and then tie another line if need for enough to throw the bottle of water in another direction thus pulling the magnet in a direction that you could not otherwise access without some sort of watercraft or getting wet. This hasnt failed yet for getting my magnets unstuck. Great video by the way and great tips.

    HI Beau , Nice informative video once again. While looking at your magnet and hook assembly i had an idea that could help minimise its tendency to snag itself. I guess by putting the hook straight trough one of those orange plastic ball , like the one that kids play hockey with, it would divert most object from the flat spot of the magnet. Just a random idea but i ghuess it might work good with your magnet assembly. :) YMMV .

      I keep looking at them on Amazon, but there are quite a few negative reviews on all of them.

    Thanks for the good video!
    I seem to have eliminated snagging,... by making a metal funnel which is upside-down on the magnet, held on the rope with a dab of silicon.
    You then are pulling up on a permanent 'taper"
    Happy hunting guys!!

    Beau : if you build a cone shape Aluminium piece ahead of the Magnet it will slip over MOST snags// Perry

      Or even wood would work. Just like a bullet shaped plastic worm weight. It will still snag, but not as bad and not as much.

      I was jumping off a dock and on the other side a guy was using one of the hooks to catch things, i watched him pull up one of his hooks he lost a week prior that he forgot about, but he remembered losing it after the fact, pretty funny
