    Instead of using electrical tape, slide a five inch length of electrical heat-shrink over the rope before tying. Then slide it down over the end tag. Then poor some boiling water over it. It's a neater way of doing it. Maybe even do the tape then finish it off with heat-shrink.

    I live in the most historical site in America and have access to some really exclusive waters. Already found multiple objects from the 1700s, and was with a buddy that found an anchor from Pre-Civil War era which was given to a museum. You can find the article somewhere, found in Suffolk Virginia.
    And this video STILL HELPED me, thanks for the great tips. I hope my finds are increased and I find some more cool stuff.

    Hi there, I got a 400 kg pulling magnet the rope had a 150 kg pulling force. So I bought 2 ropes. I figured tying both ropes to it , however I can't imagine pulling anything heavier than 50 kg realistically. Or do you think I should tie both ropes together currently 20 m long one rope. So essentially make it 40 m for deeper spots. My rope looks identical to yours on the video i bought at a magnet store. Appreciate the feedback and thank you!

    • @magnethounds8683
      @magnethounds8683  2 роки тому +3

      Hey Mike, I would buy another rope that has at least 400kg pulling force, so at the very least you are matching the magnet pull strength. You accidentally connect to a side of a bridge, a metal pier, to a car that has been submerged, etc. and your rope is going to snap as you try to pull it off. The last thing you want to to do is lose your magnet. I have been there and done that when I was first starting out with cheap store bought magnet kit and it was money just wasted away. Regardless, it has all happened to us at some point and not a great feeling. If you are tight on money right now to buy another rope, you could braid two ropes together to increase the strength as a quick fix right now, although not ideal. Good luck!

    Thanks for the video. A word from my limited experience. I lost a magnet last week because the throw snapped my belt loop and my magnet and rope sunk to the bottom of the river. If you've got a rugged sturdy belt I'd try that over the loop. Thanks for the knot advice.

    Thanks for the information. I just received my first magnet that has the ability to screw the eyelet into the round side as well as the flat side. Which side would you recommend? Thanks

    • @magnethounds8683
      @magnethounds8683  Рік тому +1

      Absolutely, glad it helped! In regards to what side to screw the eyelet into the magnet, it really depends on the type of magnet fishing you are doing. If you are magnet fishing around a dock, pier, off a bridge or dropping in an old well (my favorite) than you want to screw the eyelet into the top of the magnet as you will be doing the drop method (just dropping the magnet off the side of the dock or bridge, etc. and pulling straight up. Screwing the eyelet on top of the magnet and doing the drop method will give you the most pull strength. If you are magnet fishing in a river or just want to throw out the magnet and drag the bottom of the lake, pond, etc. than go ahead and screw the eyelet into the side of the magnet. This will allow the magnet to lay flat as you drag it across the bottom. Either way, make sure to use locktite on that eyelet! Enjoy!

    Wouldn't a simple uni knot work I've got a 3600 magnet haven't used it yet look for a rope that could handle that and whatever I might be trying to pull out of the water any suggestions on what type of rope to match with this magnet

    • @lecobra418
      @lecobra418 Рік тому

      I guess 3600(LBS I presume) stands for 1600kg, so a Barbarian magnet, I would suggest at least a 10mm (0.40") rope, concerning the knot, why would you take a chance to lose a good magnet with a bad knot? Go for a double bowline, secure the lose end, if possible obturate the eyelet and enjoy your magnet!

    • @magnethounds8683
      @magnethounds8683  3 роки тому +3

      Thank you!
      Not a silly question at all ... You do not need a permit to Magnet Fish in the US (I am assuming you are located in one of the states), except for one state where its illegal. That state is South Carolina as they have some law about removing artifacts and fossils out of the waterways where you need a Hobby License (don't quote me on this as I'm not from SC, but there has been a lot of discussion from folks in SC about this exact subject). Outside of South Carolina in the US, no permit is needed, however, you will want to ask for permission on any private property. Now of course park rangers and law enforcement could give you a hard time, but most will be fascinated if you have found anything of interest. Happy Hunting!!

    Questions? 1) the best rope to use? and 2) best Length to use?

    • @magnethounds8683
      @magnethounds8683  Рік тому

      Lot's of answers to these questions, but I like to use a polypropylene rope that has a tensile strength a little above the magnet I'm using. So if I'm using a 500lb pull-strength magnet, I am using at least a 600 pound tensile strength polypropylene rope. In regards to length I'm using a minimum 65ft in length. That allows enough length for multiple locations off bridges, docks, etc. Of course increase that based on the location you are at.

    If you buy good equipment, you won't have a problem!!! I seen knots slip and good bye magnet!!!!!! Seen it happen. They get hooked on something heavy, the knot puts out, there goes their magnet. I a trapper, ever try to hold a 75, 80lb beaver in a trap and I done it with a piece of wire, and a 1 1/2 foot hold trap. If you think after spending 150 on a magnet, I going to tie it off to any piece of rope they send, try cable rope. You ain't going to break it and you have clamps that bolt your cable loop together. Oh a swivel work great too.

  • @thomasoliver6728

    Reasons to not use the carabiner:
    1. Could get stuck easier (Never had an issue like this)
    2. The magnet could be too strong if you have a cheap carabiner, not like this one though (This literally comes with magnets because it is strong enough. Yeah, don't use the Chinese carabiner that literally says not for rock climbing, because it isn't used for this.)
    So really, the 2nd issue isn't an issue, and the 1st isn't something I've ever experienced or many others. IMO, this argument against carabiners makes no sense.

Plus, once you get snagged on a tree branch under water through that carabiner and you are walking across the lake to find an angle to get it undone and backing up your truck to try and use force to pull it out just to you lose your magnet, you would of wish you used a knot.
