  • Oprah BLAMES Taraji P Henson For Color Purple Flopping? $100 Million Loss
Just when we thought that the drama between Taraji and Oprah was wrapping up, new reports are coming out that say Oprah made things 10x messier after she went off on Taraji and blaming her for causing the Colour purple to flop miserably at the box office. The film has barely made half of its 140 million budget despite being released over a month ago with a lot of promos.
So according to the latest reports, the film already went digital due to its horrible performance at the box office, and all the producers are now blaming Taraji and all that she said at the promotional tour for causing the movie to fail.
Now when Taraji initially started speaking out and calling out the BS, Oprah and the producers of the movie put her through, Oprah tried to do some damage control.

When we are in a position of power, we need to leverage that to lift our people up not maintain the status quo. Pay her/ them what they are worth. Be a leader in that arena, so others might follow the appropriate standards we set to uplift our people. We need to set or correct the standards.

Exactly! If they’d paid her right, she wouldn’t have had anything to say. But, this is the life of the BLACK WOMAN on all levels. We must all start to speak up so people will think twice before gaslighting and using us. IJS…times up! Oprah is a poor excuse for a so called Black leader.
Who is she leading? And where? This is what happens when you become a greedy selfish mogul.

Actually, Taraji has a lot of power here and abroad. Oprah & Co expected her to go out and promote the movie, instead Taraji used this time to unearth the truth. I am so proud of her courage and stand behind her 100%. Oprah is pissed that she is now found out, in more ways than one. The ones who get the bulk of the $$$ is who Oprah is a puppet for. Many people refused to listen to Monique until Katt! Finally, they're speaking out and pulling the red carpet from under all who have stood so proudly on it, while suppressing their own. Age of Truth....keep coming. Note: I did not view this movie. Done with giving these folk my money while they exploit our past events/history and our actors. Their hands are out everywhere.

The movie didn't flop because of Taraji, people just didn't want to see a classic movie redone. The remaking of some movies is not always a good thing. The Color Purple is a movie that should have been left alone, especially after already having it appear on Broadway. I hope Taraji's career doesn't cease to exist because of her speaking out, and if it does she has more power they think.

But, we are tired of seeing our people in these types of old movies. Put them on the Big Screen! Make them the main characters. Pay them the Big Bucks! Treat them the way you would want to be treated Ms. OW. I was given a ticket as a Christmas gift and still haven't went to the movie. Okay! That's not on Taraji.

I've had it with these Hollywood's remakes. If they are not remaking Black films, they are remaking white films with black stars. Yet, Blacks had to protest so that the Oscars would recognize them by giving them some awards. Every year they get more and more exposed, and Oprah is making it worse.

I wouldn’t have gone to the movie if my parents hadn’t needed someone to drive them to it because I’m tired of remakes and especially the color purple and musicals so blaming Taraji is ridiculous! Oprah needs to get over herself and stop taking advantage of people as do the other producers who think they can make millions on the backs of others without paying them their due then “blacklist” or “blackball” them when things don’t go their way and ruin their careers so that they are never able to work again. That’s the same as bullying and there ought to be a law against it in which the person or people that are doing it have to pay for it.

If the whole process was handled respectfully, we wouldn't be here. If their are reprocussions towards Taraji because of this, it will basically validate that what she was saying is probably true. This situation has to be dealt with wisely and delicately and not with a vengence. Teaching her a lesson is not the answer, fixing what cause this is. Today it's Taraji. Tomorrow, it will be someone else, and it may be a worse situation than this.

It sounds like nothing was done before Taraji made a phone call to Oprah but why would Taraji have to make a phone call about working conditions and no food? That's crazy!

Now we play the blame game. Taraji had every right to speak on how our black actors/actresses are treated. I personally am very proud of her. When Monique spoke on these same issues, nobody seemed to care. As for Oprah, she nothing but a fraud and a disappointment. It's all about her and her counter parts. It's about time we stand with our brothers and sisters and let those who are in control know that we won't support these types of injustices. Those producers didn't think anyone would speak out. It's about time we hit them where it hurts the most, in their pockets. Everyone who was promoting this movie should be ashamed of themselves for treating these actors the way they did. They also need to take responsibility for the film flopping.

Taraji DID NOT make the Color Purple Movie flop. Once people found out it was a musical, it was a flop at that point. We were looking for another movie remade with more very well known actors and actresses. You took a classic movie and made a musical out of it. Not what most people were looking for Oprah! Stop blaming Taraji for your poor choice of movie production.

Let's keep it a buck! It's been a movie then a play, that ran for YEARS, and now a movie AGAIN?! I saw the play twice and the movie too many times to count... To INCLUDE IT IS A CLASSIC, so you shouldn't have remade it because remakes of classics of all types have FAILED repeatedly over the years! So it is not Taraji. We, the audience, have seen The Color Purple enough for ALL OF OUR LIVES. Give us movies about Black people living today, shit we'll take movies in the future... with all these filmmakers out Oprah could have made something NEW instead of a remake! Put the blame where it belongs , whoever GREENLIT this.

It was an unnecessary remake that once again shows black people in a negative light. There are so many themes for black movies that can be brought to the big screen without negativity or buffoonary. Now, as far as Taraji, she brought up some valid points, but the press tour was not the place or time to discuss them. She saw what they did to Monique. I am sure she will be blacklisted moving forward. Maybe she does not care at this point. Hope she saved what money she has made in the industry.

I am a IATSE Script Supervisor - film/television/commercials ... Oprah just stepped in it AGAIN. Producers of any worth know that if they don't take care of talent - talent will not work with them again or they will talk about poor conditions while filming. BASIC - I have had producers pay out of their own pockets for "cafe trucks" , meals and better lodging when things start to go south on a set. When all of this came out - OPRAH said - she was really just a "shareholder" a "producer' just by name - meaning she signed off on the product but wasnt THE producer - she blamed the bad food, hotels etc on Warner Brothers - when she could have easily dipped into her pockets to help her talent - but now she wants to make an example... She should be embaressed. Good luck getting anyone to ever work with her again. She won't get a penny and it seems she is not a producer, just a wealthy person wanting to make an example that she has power. The mask is off.

Taraji is golden and she knew what she was getting into, because Monique already told her and us. Oprah, Tyler Perry, and Lee Daniel are bullying black women into accepting low salaries. Taraji didn't cause Color Purple to flop, I just saw the movie and it was awful. The fact that they think blacks want to see a slave musical is insane. I know Oprah is out of touch with blacks. When I look back every movie she made or was involved with did a disservice to us as a people, but no one said anything. Every movie she touched had some form of lesbian or gay relationship in it. How is that lifting us up, hell that's bringing us down. She needs to be called out on foolishness. She's a billionaire, but I pray these young women don't aspire to be like you. They can be better than you. You help all these people in other countries, but don't help black people right here in your own country. We appreciate all you did Oprah, but now we would appreciate it if you got out the way and let these black women thrive. You are no longer needed as a gatekeeper and take Madea with you. Stop trying to blackball these women that look up to you. I see why Gayle left you alone😂.

I will continue to support her. She told the truth and as we all know, it comes at a price. What they offered her was an insult to her body of work. 4. Why weren't there enough clean trailers? Why would they get them rental cars? And underpay the workers? Didn't they just come out of a strike because of this very issue? What kind of mess is that? Oprah and Spielberg would not have accepted that. Management would have never thought twice about accommodating them. But the rest of them, kick rocks and starve. That sh&t is foul! and 5. The reality is Oprah, Spielberg and Warner brothers ruined this project. It's already streaming......................

If anyone is to take any share in blame for negative press its any and everybody who talked more about the drama than talking about the merits of the movie. Not just media but bloggers, tubers, literally everybody. If the movie just didn't hit with audiences and they didn't turn out, sadly Taraji will be the easiest scapegoat for the studio and executives to place blame on and not themselves for failing to make a hit. Obviously, with no pay increase for 6 years meant Taraji didn't have the best agent. See how all the blame falls on Oprah but Tyler Perry is barely mentioned now. Yet Taraji never called one name specifically

Looks like Taraji got paid about the equivalent to what Oprah was paid for one episode of her show.

I liked the movie in my opinion it should've been Streamed especially trying to do a remake of a classic that they should've left alone first of all. The singing was amazing and the entire cast did a great job. I had mixed feelings about going to see it when I found out it was a semi musical. But I supported anyway because of Taraji and the other actors not because of who produced it or I most likely would've passed on going to see it. To be honest. 🙏

It's terrible that they didn't pay Taraji. So now they get what they deserve. You reap what you sow.

Taraji should have kept her mouth shut until they got a return on their investment so that they can’t blame the movie failure on her. Sometimes patience get you further

It's payback for the way you treated the actors. And now you want to blame it on them for speaking out? Oprah needs more money.

I saw the play The Color Purple and in my opinion that was a flop as well. The Color Purple did not need to be a musical on stage or in theaters.

Everyone needs a scapegoat. There are studio execs fervently looking to deflect their own poor decision to support this film/musical. Objective: "Find someone else--anyone else--to blame for its failure! And so the "trickle-down" commences. Because there is NO WAY it could just be that the film just doesn't possess the "it factor." If Taraji had grinned and gleamed through the promos, the musical would have...flopped! Sorry, maybe I should have put this comment to music?

Taraji is not the only black actress underpaid by far. For the movie to flop by that much, that means A LOT of people would have boycotted the movie because of Taraji telling us. Oprah is full of it. She's the only one saying everyone BOYCOTTED the movie. And we've seen this from Oprah before. Maybe we should boycott Oprah since she gave us the idea.

Should we keep these conversations in the boardroom/ lawyers🤔? Definitely speak up but keep it private. We in corporate America deal with this Everyday!! With the risk of getting fired. (Exit, then speak up with an agenda and plan of attack)

You can’t believe every thing you hear on UA-cam.
Garnering a whopping $18.5 million, almost double said projections, the film became the second-biggest Christmas day opening of all time. It has made $54.8 million at the box office thus far. The opening day success of The Color Purple goes to show that musical adaptations are still relevant amongst today's moviegoers.
    So it wasn’t a flop….
    Budget was 90-100 million
    Box Office- $64,112,598 million
