The simplicity of this is astonishing to me, plus the fact that no one has discovered this before. Adding basically a 3rd dimension to the wave gives it the extra effective length, whodda thunk it!
I have seen where folks use their patio umbrella as an antenna. Using that tape on one of those would be really good for folks that live in HOAs and have restrictions. Great video Simon! W7RTA
Woohoooo thanks Charlie buddy - it's a total blast of an antenna mate, and I can't wait to do more testing on other bands. Thanks for watching buddy. Cheers mate!
Wow, just brilliant! Thanks Simon! That is a great idea. I've looked at our big outdoor umbrella and wondered about using it for an antenna. You should write a book with your antenna designs. I do Emergency Comms and it's good to know how to make antennas out of everything! Thanks again for your channel, Happy holidays to you and yours...73...Hugh...KN6KNB
Hey there Hugh buddy, I am not sure about a book, hahaha. I just love tinkering with things and seeing if they work or not! I tell ya mate.... every back country enthusiastic needs to have a roll of metal tape in their packs. You can make an antenna for ANY band! Cheers buddy, and thanks for swinging by and leaving a comment.
Also, what might have been the math or other reasons to do only 2 of the pie slices/sections of the umbrella and not 3 or 4, and was there any math behind the particular spacing distance between the outer and inner runs of the tape?
Hi Simon, you have inspired me big time (not bigly lol). Big question tho: what was your power output from the rig? Can the umbrella handle a full 100 watts?.
You know mate..... I might start building one wow. Brilliant idea - Infact, that's on the cards for this week. Wooohoooo Cheers Mark thanks for watching buddy
Hey Aaron thanks for leaving a comment.... I added the wire as I didn't have much luck running it as a centre fed dipole with tape on both sides of the umbrella - and also mate, if you do do that it is going to be more NVIS. I like having the additional wire on the ground side... KEEP IT ELEVATED, as you're then running a low take off angle DX antenna. So the wire really does help mate for tuning and also for flexibility. I can't tell you how much I love this antenna. Today was NUTS with some serious DX on it, on both 10 and 15 meters. Happy building mate - cheers!
The umbrella comes in handy now, as a Rain event is here until Dec 7. I should use my walker umbrella in the park with my IC 705. 15 m works as that is the one Frequency I could connect when I was mobile.
Hey Don, oh wow that's a fantastic idea. Get Mr Mike to help you build something like that for when you're down at the park! Hope you're doing great my friend. I'll see you soon when I get to the city. Cheers buddy
At least this gives me hope for what I would like to design... a hex beam that will fold up like an upside-down umbrella so I can hide it behind my townhouse fence. 73. KG7COA
What do you think about this antenna? Let me know below!
What was your TX PWR YOU WAS USING.
@@stephenpadley6684 hey there buddy, thanks for watching. 100Watts mate! Flat out barefoot 100Watts woohoooo! Cheers buddy

Simon, this video is inspirational to any antenna builder, hopefully to technicians (that can use the 10 m band).
Hahaha, that's awesome buddy. It sure is lots of fun to make and making QSO's is even MORE fun! Thanks so much for dropping and watching mate. Cheers
Turn it upside down. Even a moxon. Extra gain. Try a bigger fishing umbrella too woooohoooooo. Mark. Great video
Hahaha that's on the cards buddy. Woohooo! Cheers mate. Thanks for all of your support Mark. Cheers
Back home now had a couple of weeks in Dubai Simon. Wooohoooo
I have a 60inch fishing brolly. ???? I’m going to try it lol. Laters mate
The best ham channel on UA-cam. Thanks mate
I think you could make hexbeam also. Even multiband it ??

I was just thinking about making an antenna out of my umbrella using faraday cloth yesterday, while walking to the office in the rain.
haha, that's awesome mate. Try the metal tape mate it's way cheaper and sticks to anything. Happy building Chad! Cheers
A Hexbrella 💯👍
That would make a great hex beam
You know mate..... I might start building one wow. Brilliant idea - Infact, that's on the cards for this week. Wooohoooo Cheers Mark thanks for watching buddy
Does it require the extra wire element? I thought it was self contained until you added the long wire.

What is the actual impedance at the antenna feed point? Would a Balun help get more signal to the antenna? 73 Ed

Zigzag hexbeam
Woohooo Mark! So great to hear from ya buddy, hope you're doing great.
I guess I will just have to tell the wife that I have been fixing some leaks on her umbrella ? 73 M7BLC
Hahaha thats awesome mate! It really is a fun little antenna. I'm going to try and go live with it today for fun. Happy building buddy. Cheers!
Huge Prank
You're absolutely right! Couldn't agree more
