Hello there. Is it possible to build a coil for Chameleon CHA25 , which is a 25 feet telescopic antenna, for a power rating of 700w, to make it work on 40m, and maybe 80m band?

Wondering how the calculations went since 17 foot whip plus 10 inches of coiled wire is about 6 ft short of the 40meter 7mhz. Should I add a few more feet just in case ?

I have some 14 AWG stranded wire, would that work for this purpose or does it have to be 16 AWG?

Great video Simon. I'm guessing the antenna screws into one of the 3/8-24 couplers and the other coupler is to screw onto your stand. How does the coax get connected? Wire from a balun or unun? If so, where would the wire connect on the coil?

Interesting, Simon. I have that magnet mount and the hardware you used to convert from the UHF (Type-M) to a 3/8 threaded mount. Too much snow to get out to a park right now, but I will be testing this out when warmer WX arrives! Trim an antenna perfect in 1 cut.... When you made your antenna, you knew the exact length. When you analyzed it, you found the resonant frequency. Multiply the length by the frequency to get a new dividend. You can use any standard, or even non-standard you like for the length: inches, feet, yards, meters, centimeters, beer cans, whatever. Just be sure if your dividend is based on beer cans, you use the same size beer cans when you cut the wire. Write that number down and tape it to the wire spool so you know the formula to get the exact cut you need for the next HF antenna. Normally, the 1/2 wave formula is 468(dividend)/f=l in feet, but you may find that the dividend for your wire is actually 465.5 for the perfect cut.

Personally , I think the ethernet wire is a little thin, giving way too high Q. I scored 3 x 1000m rolls of side by side speaker wire for $10 each, so essentially each roll is 2klms of antennas. 12AWG or so, so I get a slightly better dip with slighty broader tuning range, easily handles 100w too. Many a dipole and many a vertiical have been made so far, biggest damn problem I have is tangles, GOD AWFUL tangles...I need to LEARN how to roll up wire, I spend more time untangling bloody wires than I do on the air sometimes.

If you change the Firestick to a 9 foot stainless, you'll be able (sometimes, if your lucky) to get 40m aswell, I have Marty's coil and with my 9ft and 3 clamps on the coil, I get 40m, 20m and 15m or with a retune, 20m, 15m, 11m and 10m with the three clamps on the coil. You could conceiveably run a longwire from the coil aswell, and possibly even get a tune at 80m or even 160m, Marty made a damn nice bit of gear....I haven't played with it this deep yet, and any antenna for 20m or down would be severly compromised, but if you can hear them, they should be able to hear you....might not be a big strong and loud S9 report, but a HEARD report is STILL a report.....my logbook is full of S1-S4 contacts from all parts. I will work in a pinch. I used just such a whip on the trunk of my car and fed it with a remote tuner mounted directly under the antenna. Worked great going down the highway. I could TX from 20M-10M with ease, and if conditions were good, I could use it on 40M locally. Just push a button on the IC-706 which would tune the AH-4 in the trunk. No coax between the tuner and the whip, so losses were manageable. Keep up the good work Simon. Never stop experimenting!
