    I was going to get a 40' Spiderbeam pole, and put a pulley on top and tape measure on the bottom. Then an actual fishing reel as the pulley line tractor... I could see feeding the tape through a conductive sweeper that you could clamp to so as change the length w/o having to re-clamp an alligator clip. That counterpoise array looked pretty sweet. Did you use a balun, or what what the impedance of your lead line?

    Great Video Simon! I actually tried this a few months back. I was too lazy to run to Home Depot and buy a screen to make a magic carpet and has a roll of sheet metal. I put them out like I would radials, used a bunch of Alligator clips and fired my rig up. After a bunch of fiddling around and a few well placed swear words, I got some decent results. I've been building all of your antennas and love the idea of being able to do a MacGyver and throwing together something works. It has saved me a few times, Thanks again...73...Hugh...KN6KNB

    Nice video, Simon! Did you by chance get an inductance measurement? WRC claims their Sporty Forty is on the magnitude of 40 uH if I recall. I was planning on building one like yours since they are having production issues but I think I would need about 28 turns for that inductance. Thanks! de KC0DWZ

    I think it was Aurora flutter you may have been hearing, I am think if it were long and short there would have been some delay , not much but some. Still very cool !! VE1SK

    • @aarongriffin81
      @aarongriffin81 4 дні тому

      I agree with the flutter caused by the Aurora. It is a useful natural phenomenon if you are close enough to hit the north pole, it will carry your signal very well in all directions, albeit in fluttery intensities. Long path doesn't have any discernible characteristics and the delay would only be noticed if you hear short/long path simultaneously. The caveat is if long path included the north pole along its route the it would have the flutter. One thing consider, if the flutter only existed on one direction but not the other, then it stands to reason that maybe it was long and short path after all.

  • @sc20910

    Wooo hooo Simon! Always a great video my friend! Here's a real world question for you ... given the size of that amp coupled with the IC-705, why not just replace both with an IC-7300 for an easy and consistent 100W on 160-6M? It's a much cheaper and more convenient package (not including the VHF/UHF option). Maybe those operators who mostly do QRP (with their IC-705 in this case), an amp like this gives them a QRO option once and awhile? What do you think since you primarily POTA with an IC-7300 like me 😀73 KJ6ER

    • @thehamjazz
      @thehamjazz 14 днів тому

      Wooo hooo Buddy! So great to hear from ya mate! You bring up a great question - I love my 7300, but here’s where the IC-705 + amp combo really shines-versatility. The IC-705 is ultra-portable, and while it’s QRP by nature, adding an amp gives you the option to boost power when needed, keeping things rather light and modular.... speaking of which mate, the combo of the 705 and amp is a smaller footprint and still lighter than the 7300 - Plus, unlike the IC-7300, the IC-705 can monitor FM broadcast, which is a great feature for staying informed while you're out in the field. It can also receive weather channels above the 2-meter band, which is perfect for those of us doing portable operations in unpredictable conditions. Thanks again for the awesome question, Greg buddy! Let’s catch up on the air soon. 73!
