I felt like Victor got killed for a few reasons. He got seen at a crime scene for one thing, Gus wanted to make a point to Walt that he's willing to kill his trusted employees, and also he stepped out of his lane and started cooking without his permission.
Also my favorite thing is Mike pulls his gun on Gus out of reflex when he cuts Victor. Like he was truly afraid for his life in that moment.

Yeah! Every time I watch this scene I look at Mike. He didn't see it coming. I wonder if he spoke with Gus about it after it happened or if he just kinda figured it out by himself.

@@IvanIlev In a commentary track Vince Gilligan reveals that Johnathan Banks (the actor who plays Mike) pulled the gun out in a purely spontaneous ad-lib, and also that was the only take as the complex blood-spurting effect made re-sets for additional takes impractical. When it was first described to him Gilligan thought "Damm, that doesn't make sense for him to do that, I'm going to have to cut around it in editing somehow", but when he actually saw the footage he realized that reaction was Perfect.

The act of Gus killing Victor works on multiple levels
    1. Partially because Victor had been spotted at the crime scene and could be identified, potentially leading back to Gus. Although, this doesn't seem enough of a reason to kill him, seeing as how Gus has, in the past, always tried not to resort to unnecessary killings of his subordinates.
If it were JUST to prevent the police from picking him up, Gus would have sent Victor out of state and given him hazard pay. Gus doesn't generally kill his subordinates for becoming inconvenient; otherwise why even have hazard pay?
    2. Partially because Victor overstepped his bounds by cooking that batch of meth. Gus didn't invest all that money into the lab for as Walt put it to have a "short order cook" make his product. That's the chemist's job. Victor's batch would be an inferior product. When you're under Gus's employ, know your place.
    3. Partially for punishment. Victor and Mike had failed to protect Gale, Gus's investment. Mike is too senior and too important with Victor being a subordinate. Out of the two, Victor goes.
    4. The MAIN reason however was to prove a point. And that point is... do not fuck with Gus. After Walt's actions, a drastic example needed to made and out of the four men present (Walt, Jesse, Mike and Victor), Victor is the most disposable. Without Walt, Gus has no product. Without Jesse, Gus loses Walt. Without Mike, Gus loses a valuable private investigator, tracker, assassin, intelligence officer, the muscle that can keep the other employees in line etc. Victor is basically a security guard / secretary in Gus's operation. Easily replaceable. Gus had to show that anyone is disposable, that he's willing to get his hands dirty, willing to take out his own employees, and to put fear into Walt and Jesse to keep them in line. And lastly, that Gus is not one to be crossed.

Viktor's top priority was to protect Gale at all costs until he was ready to run the lab himself. Not only did Viktor demonstrate his incompetence by allowing Gale to be killed, but he allowed Jesse Pinkman of all people to do it. If Jesse, a man Gus views as a "useless junkie" can outsmart Viktor, then how can Gus allow him to continue as his right-hand man?
And of course, as many noted, Viktor was eyeballed by multiple witnesses at Gale's apartment.

Since this episode went out of its way to talk about the big deal between pretty pure (96%) and really pure (99%), I'm guessing Gus' main reason for killing that guy is because he tried to cooked meth while ignoring the finer details that get the best results.
I think this makes the most sense because merely following a recipe wont consistently make the best product. If it did, Walt and Jessie would both be worthless to Gus, meaning he could just kill them and find someone else to make it.

Yeah as evil and bad as Victor was you have to imagine he has parents somewhere, and they will never know what happened to him. He will simply be missing forever.

I doubt Gus killed Victor because he was seen. No one knew he was seen besides Mike when Victor told him. If so, there's no way anyone else could've known he was seen, so he must've killed Victor for some other reason

Watching this episode makes me realize that the one improvement they could have done with scripting would have been to tie in the mineral collecting somewhere in the final season. Like Hank recognizing some mineral where Walt stashes his barrels or something. I dunno, but that would have just been so good because it would have been such a good long burn.

I ve never thought about it before but Whenever walter takes a step for the worse its always for or because of jesse...and jesse is so fucking stupid / unlucky every time in order for walt to step in, i m really curious what would be the course of the show if jesse died in the first season because i can't see walter taking so many risks without him, jesse literally stopped being useful the moment walter met saul and he fucked up countless times before that too

I feel like you guys are 77% correct. Gus did not kill Victor just because he had been seen, but, that was most of the reason. The other part, is that he decided it had come to a point where he did, in fact, need to employ a fear tactic. In Gus' eyes, things had "gone nuclear," so to speak. By killing Victor, he had tied up a loose end, and, tied up a loose end. Thoughts?

walter was to blinded by his own paranoia that he failed to see gale was his ticket out of the meth bussiness unscathed. Gus didn't want gale to take over so he could kill walter and jesse, gus knew walter would have to eventually stop due to his cancer, so he had gale as backup. gus was a bussiness man, not a basic druglord such as don eladio, who he already despised.
side note: you have to love how mike reaches for his gun the moment gus cuts victor's throat. he certainly couldn´t tell if he was next right there.

He didn't kill Victor just because he was seen! He killed Victor because, in that moment, Victor was running his mouth about being able to cook as good as Walt, assuming that would make it easier decision for Gus to kill Walt. BUT Gus knows (and we know because of the flashback) that no one can cook like Walt can - not even Gale. The message Gus was trying to send by killing Victor is "If you're so determined to be my only cook - have it your way."

When Gus and Jesse looked at each other I thought itbwas more that they came to an understanding. That if they fuck up again they'll be next, as long as they just work they'll keep getting paid. Something Walt didn't understand since he thinks Gus is going to kill him later.

The writers of this show would never reference Billy Ray Cyrus in this show. You know why? Cuz they weren't little girls who grew up in the mid 2000s watching Hannah Montana. They're older experienced men, honey.

Mike and Victor have Walt's number, but not Gale's?
