- Hi folks! Hope you enjoy and learn a little something about a question I get a lot...How can I tune my CBG to play it in any key?? Yes, that age old question that has haunted mankind for years. Look us up on facebook at slackjackguitars and let us know if you have any questions.
Great tips. Sounds good and very versatile. Thank you
+Travis Very helpful thanks a lot. I got my very first cigar box guitar kit today. I tuned it like you showed us in this video, and it sounds great. These chords are much easier than on my classical guitar!
Travis,
Great to see you after a few years. Great guitar and as usual, you speak with great clarity :)
Best Regards
Chuck
Great clear explanation. I will refer back as my beginner skills advance.
Thanks Travis.
Nicely explained.
Travis, really enjoy your CBG videos. I just bought my first CBG. Why did stop making videos?
This is a very helpful video. Many thanks.
The neck and fret board on that guitar are really nice looking.
This is very helpful Travis, thank you.
Excellent lesson. I think the Open A tuning you're using is actually better than the Open G that's now almost standard. Appreciate you taking the time and effort to share this.
Beautiful guitar, and sounds great. Unfortunately, I have no idea what you're talking about.
Awesome.
Thank you, Travis !
Beautiful fretboard ❤️😎
Thanks for the great info Travis !. I just purchased a cigar box guitar, & all great info such as yours is very helpful !!. Thanks again, Dan Watkins.
Nice tuning.
Great question Serge! On a 3 string instrument obviously making a true 7th chord is not possible since a 7th chord is a triad plus a flatted 7th note. However, adding that flatted 7th to the I and V of the chord would sound pretty much just like a 7th chord.
...as long as we are doing a lesson, can you tune it?
I like the headstock design...classy
+Sussi Spriggs Thanks Sussi!
Great lesson for one just getting into guitar and especially the cigar box guitar. Are you using the D G & B strings on this instrument? Also, and sorry for this but have to ask, is the Open D you refer to is A C and F#? My hearing is not the best and that is what I understood. Really need an answer so I can set up one of these guitars.
Again, Thanks loads for this video. It is one of the best I have seen.
Cool !
- What about 7th ? can one even theoretically do them with 3 strings ?
- if yes, how would the major and minor 7th look line in this tuning ?
Good to see my Devil's Tuning method is catching on.
Nice cgb!
is slackjack guitars still in existence? have just stumbled across them and can't find any other information. No website...no facebook site. Thank you! Jon.
nice x
I want a 3-string cigar box guitar. Now.
What 3 strings are you using? D G & B ??
What are the best strings, acoustic, classic (nylon), or electric?
In the case of using magnetic pickup's, it will be better electrical I suppose ... but, the electrical strings are more difficult to press?
Thank you very much!
1430sl these were acoustic strings
I have the same cigar box, I have to build a cbg. Do you use a piezo?
Yes.
I see your website is down. Why did you go out of business?
acesmitty my wife and I own an event business and I just don’t have time to build any more. I miss it!
What strings out of the standard six are you using for this tuning?
+Keith Glass I use the A-D-G strings (from bottom to top the 3rd, 4th and 5th). This is also good because a lot of people like the GDG tuning on a cbg and that tuning uses the same strings. This makes it easy to change tunings quickly depending on what you're making.
+Travis Woodall Hi Travis Please excuse newbe confusion; Ur Reply to MrQuidestveritas "I use the same strings as a GDG tuning" and here you say A-D-G strings. ?? (Sorry if I'm missing the obvious) logan
Typically with CBG's that are tuned G-D-G the low 'G' is achieved by using an A string from a standard pack of strings and just tuning it down a whole step to G. Hope that makes sense.
Far easier ways to do the exact same thing with D or G open tuning. DAD or GDG 151 tuning makes more sense. Most Blues and Rock songs are played in the 1-4-5 method, which is so easy to do in 1-5-1 tuning. This method is confusing and based off of a 6 string concept.
If i tune 151 like almost every cigar box guitar player does, i can play any chord with only 1 finger. GDG, DAD, EBE etc.
Terrible sounding chords with that tuning. Buy a four string cbg. It is a lot more versatile and sounds great with standard tuning.
out of tune - it sounds terrible
+John Richard Your ears must be better than my tuner...or probably not. But, new strings DO have a tendency to go out quickly during playing. You probably didn't know that though.
you should stretch new strings to avoid that problem. There are lots of videos on You Tube that will explain this.
Nice cgb!
+hobouk thanks!
