Big Boss wasn't saluting. He was removing the bandana after listening to Strangelove's thought on The Boss's last will. He felt The Boss betrayed herself as a soldier, later vows to never drop his gun. However, in MGS4, Big Boss dropped his and helped Solid Snake do the same via CQC after realizing what The Boss really meant all along. This game made me appreciate MGS4 a lot more.
I played this when I was still a kid so I'm not that emotionally mature enough to appreciate this scene. Now that I'm 22, I actually cried. Took me this long to appreciate this game
The Boss... saw the darkest humanity had to offer during D-day and even giving birth that day. Someone who found JOY in battle realized upon being the first person to see Earth from the outside how fragile it was and lost the joy of war and instead gained a mission of peace... only for it to be twisted by two men who misinterpreted her wishes and ultimately saved by none other than her symbolic grandson David "Solid Snake" killing her only biological son and last remaining family. And this isnt even mentioning Johnny Sasaki being the spanner in the works of everyone's plans by saving Solid. The ultimate soldier ended up being an an average everyman fighting for love alongside a man who absolutely refused to die.
It’s so poetic that Solid Snake and Otacon unknowingly fulfilled the Boss’s will, a child made to be the perfect soldier and another child surrounded by a family legacy of creating weapons defied their fate and put a stop to all that mess
Her memories remained, so this means that after death she, being half-insane because of traumas, was forced by them to be a war machine, and then her own disciple torn her brains, her individuality in parts, leaving only brain stem - reptile pod, and even then to save peace she needed to sunk herself My god, i'm so sorry for boss... i'm crying...
Her memories were all preprogrammed to fulfill her mission which was to give her life for her mission and her country and this repeated in her memories which had her essence, this is why she sank herself as a machine and stopped a nuclear holocaust, 1. because she was selfless and cared about saving her country for the sake of peace 2. she longed for Peace and not War .......this marked Big Boss's departure from The Boss's path of Peace and Big Boss longed for War and confrontation.

This scene is extremely symbolic, Snake throws his Bandana in the Ocean symbolizing his break with The Boss and interpreting her will his own way, when her memories were manifesting her true will of real Peace, Big Boss then proceeds to claim The Boss betrayed him and takes the title of Big Boss which he would not take in PO (at least in this game) if PO is indeed Canon.

Snake eater really got me tearing up but this broke my heart. It was so sad but yet beautiful to see unfold. The boss's final mission is so tragic and seeing how much the boss's death has affected big boss throughout the years makes me feel so much sympathy for him. Amazing videogame series

I hate that Huey became an unredeemable asshole monster in MGSV and I hate how Strange Love's story ends. She's such an interesting character I would've loved to see more of her in MGSV.
Well Huey was fucked up since mgs2. He drowned himself and true to kill his daughter. So it was smart to make him a monster who had everyone fooled and he even fools himself.

Then Ocelot under the guise of the Patriots used Solid Snake to destroy them and the AI and free Big Boss, Ocelot is the real hero for avenging his Mother´s death and saving Big Boss.

The Big Boss story arch ends here, notice when Strangelove says: "There can be no Peace", the camera turns to Big Boss saluting and discarding The Boss's bandana symbolically straying from The Boss's will of Peace and from Solid Snake unwittingly fulfilling it later on (Bandana represents both), the Butterfly leaves with the Boss's memory away from Big Boss, the Butterfly represents Peace and Big Boss's metamorphosis as seen when he was adjusting his remaining eye to seeing it in Snake Eater after losing one of his eyes, the Butterfly gets lost completing Big Boss's descent into a Warmonger.
He was still a great character after this game even though he double crossed and lied to Kaz in 5, while The Phantom Pain was happening, he was rescuing Frank Jaeger from being tortured and mutilated further, so he had some human element, Jaeger reminds us Big Boss was still very human, loyal to his friends and a real father figure to a kid who had no one and nothing much like Solid Snake was a father figure to Raiden.
"Loyal to his friends" - Really? After what he did to Kaz in Phantom Pain? Besides, he was willing to sacrifice the whole hospital staff and the patients of there just to make his escape plan be successful. They practically ruined his character in The Phantom Pain.
Kaz was a false friend, he knew about Eli behind Big Boss's back and was in contact with Zero even if just for business purposes. He did however set everything up for Kaz to be rescued through Ocelot and Venom, now Jaeger was a true friend to Big Boss and showed his loyalty to him many many times, its smart on how Venom's character was handled and wouldn't be surprised if Kaz helped Venom kidnap Jaeger in MG1 before defecting to Zero by MG2 and helping Solid Snake.
It makes sense that Kaz had some elements of a guy who would betray his Boss later as Liquid was his doppelgänger and Kaz did look like Liquid in Peace Walker, Ocelot would later take on Liquid's identity as his doppelgänger being the "main antagonist" to Solid Snake (strange paradox since Liquid hated Big Boss and Kaz did too while Ocelot loved him).
One of the best games i `have played. I buy it for the psp and complete almost at 100% (monster hunter island, some secondaries and never unlock the fulton bazuka). I love all the little songs the mechas do, puppa when enter the corridors, crhysalis and peace walker at the end, what a wonderfull game (ocean its a person so don´t account as a mech when its song play during the last mech fight)
