I was present in the studio for the recording of this episode. They recorded for 2 hours straight- with literally a 15 second break while they did 'something technical'. It was comedy gold from start to finish- often referencing previous exchanges in later rounds - and we left thinking 'how on Earth are they going to edit that down to the 30 minutes for the main show, and even the 45 minutes QiXL format.

The Alan winning thing, I saw an interview, where Alan said he got tired of being the whipping boy and started to avoid traps, and therefore winning, whereupon the show runner (John Lloyd) sat him down and explained that that's his function, and the purpose for him being there, and that he isn't dumb etc. In the future, he falls on traps more readily and starts losing in a comedic fashion, basically so the other guests are more relaxed and get into the comedic side. They are also hence more likely to answer things which they aren't 100% sure about, due to being less scared of the klaxon .

Ah, but what was the theme tune to The Likely Lads, and Bewes disappeared without much trace (he might have done a bit in music ?), whereas Bolam went onto When The Boat Comes In and New Tricks, among other roles. Thelma of course ended up in Last of The Summer Wine.

QI needs Alan to give the obvious answer fearless of klaxon, to keep the pace up regardless of panelists' willingnesss to be seen as mistaken. David and Dara are not insecure about their intellects (indeed they are known for them) and as performing comedians do not hesitate to take the spotlight with an answer (right or wrong... though mostly funny).
Recommended it before and now here again: for more David Mitchell, please, please react to Peep Show.

I have a theory, well more of a pattern i'v noticed. It seems that Alan wins when there are really good, funny guests, Alan's more than happy to sit back and give them the laughs. Its in episodes when he has to 'carry' the show sightly more, he usually get the stupidly low scores.

Rodney Bewes was an actor who played in a much loved sitcom, The Likely Lads, amongst other things. I guess he was most famous in the 60s, 70s and 80s . Graham grew up in Ireland so might not have seen the show.

Graham's number was discovered by Ronald Graham for this specific mentioned problem. At the time, and for decades afterwards it was the largest number that was meaningfully used in a mathematical paper. Since, there have been larger numbers used but Graham's number is still the largest named number.
For the actual problem the lower bound has since been increased to 13 and the upper bound decreased to a much lower Hales-Jewett number.

Rodney Bewes with James Bolam was in the sitcom 'The Likely Lads' and it's colour successor, 'Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?' In the first, they were two young guys doing what they do whereas in the second series they met up again but their individual circumstances had changed somewhat. Bewes was also in the 5th Doctor story 'Resurrection of the Daleks'.

Stephen made a vast understatement with Graham's Number. It's so big that even if you divided the entire observable universe into Planck length cubes that each are about 100 quintillion times smaller than a proton, and you somehow got to represent each of these cubes with a binary value that would not be enough space to contain the binary value of how many digits Graham's Number has, let alone contain the number itself.

I understand on an intellectual level the value of number theory as a discipline and how it's led to advancements in information theory, computation, cryptography, etc., etc.
But on a visceral level, my human inadequacy to conceive of quantities so vast triggers a barely contained real sense of anger. It's unreasonable, and my prefrontal cortex at least tamps it down, but it's there in the back of my mind. It feels like being thrown into the Total Perspective Vortex.

As someone who has loved the show since it began, it's really wonderful to see someone who has discovered and appreciates its brilliance. To experience these episodes again through your enthusiastic reactions is great. And I think you are on Alans wavelength, preemptive joking that Amadeus and Leonardo would get rid of there competition. And appreciating a Mitchell rant.
Belated congrats on the 10k subscribers b.t.w. Suggested for a QI reaction from the I series S09E16.
No reason you should know Rodney Bewes. You might have seen him in a Ken Branagh Shakespeare movie. Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads if you want to dip your toe in a 1970's sitcom.

Strong episode, Neil, especially since one can't beat a Mitchell rant. I actually like the fact that Alan is being Alan, instead of being asked to dumb himself down, which makes the atmosphere more relaxed, and doesn't feel like he's being ganged up against.

At least as far as the edit goes, Alan won because he didn't leap on the "how old are you" klaxon. (Yes, entirely true, the edit of a show and scoring doesn't necessarily follow-through: Alan has often had an extremely low score without, in the edit, getting many or even any klaxons, so huge grain of salt there.)

It's amazing how much stuff we were taught in school in the 80s that is just not true.
The tongue rolling I knew had to be nonsense when in class I couldn't do it and I practised and practised and in a few months I learned how to do it. It's not hard to learn, it's just time consuming. The tongue is a very flexible muscle and you just need to use your mouth to shape it and then you soon learn the muscle control to do it.
The taste map of a tongue is another junk subject we were taught.
Earthquakes are measured on the Richter scale. No.
Airplanes fly because of the shape of the wing. No.
There's only 3 states of matter. No.
It's not the teachers fault. It's the school funding. The teachers are just reading out of books from the 1920s because there's no money in the education sector unless you are paying for it.

I feel very disconcerted when I hear the myth of the generous Leonardo. What inventions do we have at present that can be directly associated with Leonardo's generous: none. Leonardo was a man of novelty, including his painting techniques, that rarely lasted as long as Leonardo. His inventions couldn't be constructed to work, as the modern material needed were not available in 1600s Italy or France. Even his so called tank had a Leonardo devised gearing system that drove the front wheels forward and the back wheels backward, hence the term sitting target. He was however good at self promotion, unlike Leon Battista Alberti, who was the real Renaissance man.
