The layers of interweaving comedy that Larry David sets up is phenomenal. It starts with him seeing the cleavage on the attractive nurse, which makes his heart race. That leads to him having to wear a heart monitor. He gets hit by a car which causes David Schwimmer's Dad to misinterpret the phone call. The aggressive guy who hit him then threatens him with a crowbar. Larry is then able to dissuade the situation by exposing the heart monitors. And then there's another bunch of disconnected/connected plotlines within the episode. Incredible.
Great job guys! Loved the complexities of this episode and how you guys broke it down. I too had forgotten this one for some reason, and had to go back and rewatch it. Keep up the great work! ❤
English major alert! I came here to post a note chastising Jeff for consistently misusing "nonplussed" (a word he uses often, ate least three times in this ep alone). Always assumed it meant "unfazed," i.e., the complete opposite of the way he intends it (surprised/shocked). Doublechecked the definition online....only to learn that the original meaning is, in fact, just as Jeff understands it. And that I had always gone by the opposite meaning, which, in fact, has come to be accepted---only by virtue of so many people getting it wrong. Lesson learned! : - )
Curious relationship between Jeff and Susie. He can be charming, interesting, rude and oblivious. And Susie is the total opposite of her CYE persona- very patient with Jeff.
I think someone had a talk with Jeff Garlin, maybe between 4-5 and 4-6. Something like "Jeff, we love you, we know you have issues that are hard to manage, but we've got a lot of terrain still to cover, and you're getting unbearable." He was at his worst in the discussions of early season 4, then remarkably subdued by his standards in the episode about The Car-Pool Lane and here in The Surrogate as well. I'm glad Jeff spotlighted Melissa McCarthy, but a little surprised Garcelle Beauvais (Renée) passed without mention.
No, all of the podcast episodes up until this point were recorded before the last season of Curb aired. Just before the six-minute mark, Jeff says that Jeff Schaffer (Curb writer/producer/director) is currently working on Curb's post-production.
@@WaitingtoHit I know they aren't reacting to *listener* feedback, but the podcast is still the work of other people who hear and deal with Jeff, besides Susie and the guests. The way Jeff was in, for example, the analysis of "The Blind Date" was extreme even for him. He was at his worst in early season 4, and then he turned on a dime in the last two. I don't think that was entirely self-awareness.
True, but he is so oblivious when he is talking to the surrogate about his his story as a writer is like his baby ... and he goes on and on. That is one consistent arc that shows up - how Larry's attempts to be affable, or sensitive always seem to backfire on him. Gotta love this show, it is so good.
The scene with Larry faking the second heart attack remains the hardest I've ever laughed at this show (and one of the top times in my lifetime, even).
This was such a great Curb episode. God I miss the energy of the first 5 seasons….LD didn’t give a f*ck about anything back then, and it was the purest form of comedy ever made. 🙏
That nurse in the doctor's office is HOT HOT HOT, I don't blame Larry! I love that music when Rene asks Larry how he is doing at 9:51 You guys don't emphasize just how much the music drives Curb! It is so great!
I know Jeff has ADHD and he and Suzie are clearly old friends but, even without “by the way” or “hang on”, his interruptions come across as rude. He’s now adding “no” every time, as though she hasn’t remembered or understood it correctly. As a result, Suzie comes across as unbelievably tolerant.
@@NewFalconerRecords I get that. I still think he seems totally unaware of how rude he is to her. I appreciate that she's probably used to it, I just don't think it's fair on her.
@@MartinFGayford It doesnt even matter how Susie feels about it. He absolutely ruins the experience for all of us that would like to enjoy it. It is insane that no one is intervening and putting a stop to this, pulling Jeff off the podcast........its like a teacher standing up to do a lesson and everything that comes out of their mouth some child yells interruptions causing the whole class to be anxious, this is what it is like.....
I urge y'all to search Jeff Garlin Baywatch (can't share the clip here), as he references at 24:21. The clip's called Larry Loomin' Large and is one big bowl of cringe hahaha. Loving every episode of this pod from day 1 ❤
Yeah, Jeff's right, Melissa McCarthy nailed it - exceeds expectations in that role! A lot of good acting in this episode, or any of them! Great casting.
Are you serious---she isnt rushing, she goes thru every scene but he is just unbearable...why cant he pick and choose where to intervene. No one really cares what comes out of his mouth..... Why doesnt he just go thru the episode and do it alone? That way we wouldnt have to listen to his rude interruptions...he could just do a stream of conscientiousness? Why cant Garlin get a cattle prod every time he says "by the way" and "no, no, no"..............
Thanx for deleting i was doing a little bit of drinking. Don't worry you're both good. I read Jeffs autobiography a while back too. Anyway keep up the good work be safe! 🇺🇸🕎
Even with all the by the ways and Hold ones, still enjoy these a lot! Most of these early Curbs I had never watched but I started watching in order now. And then listen to these recaps.
Anyone happen to catch the RFKjr Thankgiving photo of him in barefeet with Cheryl deep frying a turkey in beef tallow! LOL ;-) Over time and because of politics I am really starting to dislike Cheryl Hines, and then she shows up one season will all kinds of surgical "improvements". That is so sad.
I'm sorry but this is just terrible. Jeff's tangents have nothing to do with the show and everything to do with him personally, and it would be passable if these were at least interesting, but it just feels like he's in love with himself. Look at your view count for crying out loud, Curb is a popular show but this is becoming unwatchable and Suzie, you should do these with someone else. I'm just being honest.
At 15:12 Susie goes right past one of the funniest LD moments when he’s taunting Wanda about needing a black man to get his car. This is sadly a result of the woke/PC culture that Curb has embraced in recent years, and why it’s just not funny anymore. 😢
Jeff's rudeness ruins every episode. He argues with her on every point. If she says the sky is blue he will interrupt and say No, No, No, hold on it is pink......It is just so obnoxious. For everyone that classifies Susie as a "saint" she isnt. That she didnt pause this whole endeavor and speak with the producers on how to come up with plan perhaps Susie doing alone with rotating guests may be option....he is just a complete ass and Susie and the producers are worse for allowing this.........
Frank John Hughes is the actor who played the driver who went after LD.

Absolute genius story writer. There’s nobody else as good as Larry.

Larrys conversation with the surrogate about his 'baby' 😂😂

I really liked this episode, I liked that Larry was very kind when he was thinking about the surrogate's feelings.
