The drums aren't as racist in my opinion compared to Susie's remark to Wandering Bear 'Wandering Elk or whatever your name is".

Missed talking about that hilarious raised eyebrow from Wandering Bear when Larry tells him about Cheryl's numbness.

Cheryl: "Have you noticed we haven't had sex in a long time" LD: "Cheryl I'm watching this thing about hippos" - just too much - Curb is so funny I sometimes can't laugh as it takes my breath away with no notice.

One of my (many) favorite episodes. Larry disguising his voice while ordering the tape: "Someone told me about girls going wild...The wildness" must join the ranks of the funniest lines of Curb.

Jeff's rudeness ruins every episode. He argues with her on every point. If she says the sky is blue he will interrupt and say No, No, No, hold on it is pink......It is just so obnoxious. For everyone that classifies Susie as a "saint" she isnt. That she didnt pause this whole endeavor and speak with the producers on how to come up with plan perhaps Susie doing alone with rotating guests may be option....he is just a complete ass and Susie and the producers are worse for allowing this.........

Even with all the by the ways and Hold ones, still enjoy these a lot! Most of these early Curbs I had never watched but I started watching in order now. And then listen to these recaps.

To me the Indian drums represent Larry’s naivité and awe at the supposed mystique of the Native American, so it seems like an apt social commentary about the inverted racism directed at “native” people of all kinds. It still seems completely apt.

(1) Others have noted that there were DVDs in 2003-04, but I'll go one better: there were DVDs of Curb itself available when this season was new! My recollection is that it was 1999 when rental DVDs started taking up space in Blockbuster. There was an overlap period when both formats were still viable, but VHS faded a little more each year. (2) On the topic everyone is talking about: Let's see if Jeff maintains consistency by criticizing the movie/TV "Oriental" music (you know...bamboo flute, gently strummed pipa [lute], sometimes a gong) for various Asian/Pacific Islander characters. I don't remember him objecting in the earlier one with the acupuncturist who sent flowers, but there's more in later ones, like the one with the kamikaze pilot and his son.

No, I think Larry does intend the seat belt problem to have significance. It’s parallel with that he’s somewhat inept, like the fact he can’t apply a condom properly.

How is the music racist?? The score was a reverential nod to his culture. If it were a demeaning portrayal of Native Americans, that would be different, but Wandering Bear not only cured Cheryl's vagina, he cured Oscar the dog! He also makes a beautifully sharp-witted point about the lack of respect paid to him as a healer compared to the traditional doctors who failed to help...To quote Seinfeld in the Donna Chang episode, "If I like their race, how can that be racist?" We should be careful not to water down the meaning of a word that represents one of humanity's greatest evils.

It's incredible how the core Curb actors remained together for such a long period of time. That really says something about all of them. This episode is a gem. Susie comes across as very switched on in real life.

I love watching you guys and listening to your outlines and opinions... I do not agree that the drums are a problem, because drums are part of Shamanism - if Russell Means didn't like the drums playing then that would be reason to exclude them.
