Outstanding advice, just what I needed as I'm going to rig my boat with all new electronics and trolling motor The way you break down the selection process is spot on. Thank you!
Really good and systematic approach. Very helpful. I'm in the process of buying a new system for a boat with 0 electronics. It is a very overwhelming process.
Excellent advice on the fishfinders. Two years later I'm getting into freshwater fishing again after mainly saltwater fishing for the last 50 years. I figured out which fishfinders I wanted(Garmin) then was fixing up my new "small" boat. I'm ready to buy the Livescope LVS34 and a trolling motor. Nice video. Very clear voice and quality video. So I picked up a Garmin UHD93SV on sale for $699. Hoping one day the LiveScope will be less than $1500 and will buy next year as a treat to myself... If I find a deal on a use Hummingbird, most likely will buy a small screen Helix just for the contour autopilot capability, which the MK trolling motor i buy now has to include a transducer and iPilot Link addition. Definateily gotta do research and take time to plot our future goals so you don't make a mistake on the first 2 most important... Fish Finder and Bow Trolling Motor. P.S. - I can't believe someone thumb downed your video??? ;o)
I was hoping you would cover the smaller units and which is best. I fish strictly from a kayak. I have been using the Humminbird heli 5. My problems is I can not get any clarity in shallow water. The average depth I fish in is 2 to 6 foot of water with a max anywhere of 12. Don’t need anything except to see bait fish and fish and structure and bottom. Shopping for the right unit is to confusing. Please just make a recommendation for a small unit best bang for the buck for my needs. I will go with that. Max budget is around 200. Thanks
Thanks for the vid. I listened closely and didn't understand 90% of what was said because I know almost nothing about fish finders. If you could make a fish finder for dummies video that explains what all the features do and why you might want them, it would be greatly appreciated.
I've read a whole lot of problems people have with the hook2 units. Crashes after updates, good for a year then stop working, etc, etc. I wanted one at first, but after research I don't think so.
Its now March 2022 and I really enjoyed this video. In fact, I just subscribed to your channel. I’m planning to replace an old Ray Marine A60 that’s currently on my 24 foot Aquasport walkaround. I’m in New Jersey but I missed the Atlantic City boat show so I’m wondering where is the best place to buy a chart plotter/fishfinder unit. I only know West Marine, Amazon and eBay. Is there any other places, including buying straight from the manufacturers that would make the most sense? Thanks again.
Living in the north west on a remote island I did things in a little different order, but still used the same method. Wish I had of seen this video before, it would have been a little less stressful ... lol
Hello. I don't fish much, I fish to relax when I can, once a month and sometimes every two months. I have a small semi-rigid boat of 5 meters. What probe do you recommend for up to 600 euros more or less? I've been looking at the Hook Reveal 7 Tripleshot and the Garmin EcoMap UHD 73SV. What is your suggestion for fish finders? Thanks. António
Dear in the first time you did a good video, but I have many dubts about what to buy. I like to have a side view, I'm in Italy in particulary in Ancona in Adiatico sea where the there is max 100 ft where I fish. So what do you raccomand to buy a Garmin Stike vivid 7 sv or Lowrance Hook reveval 7 triple shot? thanks a lot for your answer
Which one would your recommend Lowrance elite FS9 or garmin uhd2 SV95 ?? About a 300 dollar difference in aus. I fish 0 to 20m most of the time. Thanks
Hi Lawren, good video. Regarding Add On’s - I have a Hook Reveal 7 with standard transducer. It’s really suitable to my needs but would like better structure resolution etc. Can I use an All in One (3 in 1) transducer with adaptor cable ? Cheers 🎣
I am looking for a fish finder around 500$ and will be able to jig lake trout in 100+ feet of water, and also a lot of bass and pike fishing. Maybe with Side view If possible, what would you recommend? Cause I was looking at the garmin striker plus 7sv, but it said it came with a 250w transducer, which doesn’t seem enough! What’s your opinion on what I should buy? Maybe I should buy only the sonar, and buy a transducer after.. Thanks
If you go SideVu then the Striker Vivid 7sv, if not then I'd go with the echomap 63cv UHD. Going to be hard to find a unit under $500 with a 600w transducer. 250w is probably the best you'll get.
Lawren, I'm looking for a new unit for the front of my boat and transducer on the trolling motor. I just need regular sonar and would like to have DI. I use to run Lowrance years ago but went to humminbird but with all the new technology I'm open to all suggestions. I'm like everyone else that wants most bang for the buck. I currently have a 13 year old 9" bird that started cutting off and on last fall so now is the time to replace it. I'm not interested in net working just the basics since I might bass fish for a while or crappie fish and the past several years I really like big bluegills and redears which is why I would like DI on the trolling motor. I already have it on the dash with my 10" bird...Thanks for any suggestions you can send this way about Lowrance and best place to buy one and thanks for all the great videos you do.....I like them regardless of the commercials.....LOL
I'd look for a Helix with Mega DI. They seem to have the best imaging sonar today. The 7 and 8 inch models come with a different Transducer than the 9 inch and up ones. So you're better off getting the bigger screens for the better transducer
My new 18 ft G3 18 ft Angler I'm picking up this spring 2022 will have an Ulterra trolling motor with a Mega Di transducer built in. So I was considering a 9 inch Humminbird Mega di screen on the front deck where I also hope to use my new 9 inch Garmin ice fishing Livescope witrh transducer on a seperate deck mounted pole. I usually troll a lot with my present Terrova on my smaller side console boat and will likely continue to troll a lot with the Ulterra flat lining. I'm wondering whether to install a similar Humminbird at the helm but would want to be able to use it with or when the trolling motor is not deployed ( with a transom mount transducer) .I there some sort of netorking needed to do this? Is Navionics still the best mapping for Georgian Bay and larger inland lakes in the Parry Sound area and will it work on new Humminbirds being a Garmin product ? What is the best chart plotter / fish finder choice for updating existing or creating your own contour maps on smaller inland lakes in central Ontario? A lot to consider for a new boat. Coming from a single Lowrance Elite 7 FS with side scan presently. Your advice would be appreciated.
For networking two helix unit you'll need an Ethernet cable and two Ethernet adapters. Navionics+ would be the best chart for that area and it will work with Humminbird. I think Humminbird autochart live is the best mapping today so get a Zerolines card as well and you should be all set
Hi bro we will be getting a 32 ft cc we would need it for sounding structure very deep up to 1.5km and good sounding at marks at about 200m what do you recommend from airmar
I bought a 7 sv Garmin in 2016. I made my 1436 jon into a bass boat in 2016. It's going strong today. My 7 inch hummingbird helix I bought 2 years ago is on my transom. Both were good buys. After a few years I think 2 fish finders are over kill on local lakes. After a while you will learn ever corner, brush pile, channel swing, or rock pile. Time on the water making way points will negate big 12 inch mega imaging if your fishing the same 2000 acre over and over.

What about kayak fishing inshore and coastal fishing?
Great video. I live in Grimsby and I am looking for a fish finder for my 16.5 foot aluminum fishing boat. I want to spend 500 to 700. I spend most of my time on lakes in the north but occasionally I’m on Lake Ontario. Any thoughts or recommendations?
Lowrance Hook2 or Hook Reveal will get you in that price range for a 7". Helix units you'll get a 5“. Garmin Striker Vivid units are good if you don't need maps. Check out this video I just did ua-cam.com/video/tBpQa6VD3Bg/v-deo.html
Hi lawren! I am look to get 360 imagining in the front of my boat. I have a lowrance hds9 on the dash and an older lowrance unit with just traditional downscan and mapping in the front. They can both share waypoints. What humming bird would you recommend? I have a 20ft bass boat so size Isnt an issue. Probably just looking for the cheapest of their units that still have 360
I wouldn't go Solix as I don't like their menu system. I don't really like the Helix menu system either, but for a cheap unit for a 360 go with the Helix 8 MDI CHO.
Lawren, when I finally get my Active Image transducer in February because of back order, the power unit part,do I need to run that straight to the battery or can I hook that up to the fuse box,I was unsure because of interference,I truly appreciate your feedback 👊
I personally always do the easiest option first. Most times it works fine. If you do have trouble with interference that is when I would start troubleshooting and go to a battery. If you want to be safe and not have to worry go to the battery directly first
Great video)) I'm in dilemma. I got 26foot tritoon boat. Looking for 7" screen. Iive GPS build in. Lake maps(.I'm in Pennsylvania, lake wallenpaupackis pretty deep). And triple view transducer. I don't need networking in the unit. Looking to spend $500 top... I don't mind to get last year model))) Am I asking too much for the price ? What would u suggest?
You can probably get what you want for that price, but they will be entry level units. Check the Lowrance Hook Reveal 7" Tripleshot. A lot of times you can find the Garmin echomap 73sv units on sale that would be in that ball park for price too
Hello all and good day! Just a quick question and asking for suggestions from all! What would be the best fish finder I could buy when using it on a rental boat! I cant drill in or mount a lot of the equipment I'm seeing on the market! Just retiring and seeing if the ultimate when and if I buy a boat of my own! Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
I am looking for a fish finder that can help me with crappie fishing catfishing and finding baitfish, don’t really know much about fish finders and have never really owned one. The depth of the water I’m going to be fishing in isn’t going to be that deep. Thanks
I think if you follow the process outlined in this video, you'll find that it really narrows down your search. Start with screen size and budget just like the video says
Looking for a mobile unit I can change from my 16 foo Carolina skiff to a canoe or my 23 foot panga. I was looking at the Garmin striker 4 or to spend a max of 500$. I in miami Florida. Any ideas.
Not sure if you covered this or not too many comments to go through. How can you find out what mapping software is best for your area? I'm in Eastern Ontario like the Ottawa area what should I be looking at? For my aluminum boat/kayak I was looking at a 5". Can you recommend? Nothing too fancy basically sonar and GPS and possibly down/side imagining ( or its corresponding term depending on the company). I'm not manufacturer biased at all.
Best way is to go into a store and get them to show you the options. Or you can view some online. Navionics and CMAP both have chart viewers on their websites. In just about all cases in Ontario Navionics is the way to go. Lowrance Hook Reveal 5 or Garmin Striker 5 would be the way I'd go
Great video, but one of the problems for people like me, who have never owned a fish finder, is we dont know what we need or even how to use one. Then what? The internet is full of salesman. I want one for my fishing kayak.
That's where your watch the videos on the different technologies and see what they do. Then you can decide what you need. For a kayak get an Elite Ti2 7". They are great units!
Hey thanks for the video I have a question for you. My cousin bought a 25ft boat in Fiji Islands and I wanted to get him a fish finder that would work out there any recommendations?
Pretty much anything with work but you'd have to narrow down what you're looking for. My only advice for something used in saltwater would be to get a high quality transducer with it. Something from Airmar that is minimum 600w
Here in Aruba we fish choppy waters from 50 du to 1000ft of water, all I see is fishing done in calm waters where the depthsounder works well Have a 28 Chris Craft with twin inboards . Looking for a gps/fishfinder/thru hull transducer up to around $800 Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Peter Meijer
Might be hard to find anything on that price range. Lowrance HDS Live units come to mind with the Airmar P319 transducer. The GPSMAP 742 from Garmin also with the same transducer
Lauren, two questions... Once I use the amazing info you provided to purchase how do I go about learning how to use the dang thing? I have two boats I use equally. It there a brand portable or do I have to have duplicate wiring on each boat?
Sorry for the late reply, must have missed this comment.... Best place to learn is UA-cam and then practicing on your own. I find going out using the unit, coming up with questions and then searching those terms is usually the best way on UA-cam.
Answer your second question. I would just duplicate the wire and get a power cable mounting bracket and transducer and you're all set. A lot of companies offer second boat kits where it'll supply all those accessories in one package
First thing you need a little knowledge of the area you're going to be checking. I always recommend looking at an area you're familiar with so you know what it should look like. Second Navionics and CMAP both have chart viewers on their website so you can look at the charts before you buy them. Lake Master is the only other one so you can probably go into a retailer to get a demo on that chart. Asking around other anglers. What they're using is often a good idea as well

I’m gonna go with a Hummingbird Helix-15 Gen4 (CHO) and the Mega360 attached to my Minn Kota Ultrex I-Pilot. I’m never gonna network with it or use DI/SI . I wish there was a unit in the series that gave the choice to let you have only GPS and the ability to use the Mega-360. Feel like I’m paying a higher price for things I will never or want to use.
I am surprised too that they didn't make the Mega 360 compatible with the non Mega units. Especially in the larger screen sizes. I guess that was one of the downsides for them to switch from Ethernet to transducer connection
I would like to run my fish finder on my ski doo ( ice fishing) just for the GPS maps, what do I do with the transducer unplug it or leave it plugged in
I live in South Carolina and fish lake Murray and santee I have a 20’ Jon boat and I have the 80lb thrust minn Kota trolling motor. I’m looking to spend no more than $1000 what fish finder what you think would be best for me?
Cheapest Garmin with a chart built in, the actual transducer , fish finding ability does not get better unless you upgrade an already expensive units transducer after the fact adding about another $1000.
...all are good - agree, but no one offers a 'buy-back'...so all are just driven by the same sales strategy > consumers and more consumption... bottom line > no real upgrade on the same unit and no actual replacement but to buy a new one every other 2-3 years
Hey there I just brought a kakay. Iam looking into get fishing finder my kakay is vibe sea ghost 110. I mustly do alot of river fishing. But I also do Ice fishing in the winter I live in Pennsylvania could you help me
I'm also from Southern Ontario. Which brand has better mapping? Honestly your probably busy but I'll ask the question anyway. I need a unit that's 7 or 9 inch for my kayak. Don't need networking but would like live mapping capabilities, side imaging/sonar. Usually will be bass fishing. Budget 500-900cad . Pls help. It's so much to take in lol

This was a wealth of information. Thanks so much for creating this video.
🔥🔥Awesome job Lawren as always, you definitely help anyone to able to make the proper decisions to invest in the right unit 👍
Thank you!
Saw this just after I purchased a Raymarine Element 7HV.
Just reinforced what I had already decided.
Thanks for your help !
Consider buying a unit that has been in continuous production for a long time vs. something from companies that is constantly introducing "new" products frequently. That is why I have a Koden/Sitex CVS-128.
Companies bring out new products because of new features and technology. They don't discontinue products because they were junk.

I can’t believe you zoomed in on Chautauqua lake at 5:00, killer musky lake and right down the road from where I live😂
Fished it many times in the late 2000s. I would usually go for bass during the catch and release spring season.
Great advice. In the market for a 9" unit for my kayak. Which company has the best mapping for lakes in Quebec and Ontario (not great lakes)?
This video was really helpful
thanks a lot, big help to clear my ideas about this topic 🙏
Great!! Glad it helped
Great video!
Great bunch of strategic information.
Thank you!
So much info!! I need to watch again lol thank you

Hey great video lots of detail. I live in windsor, Ont. I fish lake st clair, detroit river, st clair river and Erie. What mapping do you suggest?
I love you man. Thanks

P.S. - I can't believe someone thumb downed your video??? ;o)
Panoptix is on sale right now at BPS for 1300$
Nice is that including the mail in rebate or before it?
@@InDepthSonar not sure but they're probably sold out now
Very Helpful, thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks buddy great vid
You bet
I was hoping you would cover the smaller units and which is best. I fish strictly from a kayak. I have been using the Humminbird heli 5. My problems is I can not get any clarity in shallow water. The average depth I fish in is 2 to 6 foot of water with a max anywhere of 12. Don’t need anything except to see bait fish and fish and structure and bottom. Shopping for the right unit is to confusing. Please just make a recommendation for a small unit best bang for the buck for my needs. I will go with that. Max budget is around 200. Thanks
Take a look at my channel for the Best Budget video. That'll help you
Help choose. Sea depth 30-60m . RAYMARINE axiome 12 \ GARMIN echomap 122sv \ LOWRANCE live 12
I would go Axiom or HDS Live in that case. Make sure you get a good Airmar transducer and you'll be fine. P66 is good if you need a transom mount
Thanks for the vid. I listened closely and didn't understand 90% of what was said because I know almost nothing about fish finders. If you could make a fish finder for dummies video that explains what all the features do and why you might want them, it would be greatly appreciated.
Lots of videos on my channel that will help with that. Check them out
Thank you , this video helped me out a lot.
Glad it helped
i want a fishfinder for my kayak in tampa bay area looking at lowrance hook reveal 5 and garmin striker vivid 5 cv any recomendations on which one
I've read a whole lot of problems people have with the hook2 units. Crashes after updates, good for a year then stop working, etc, etc. I wanted one at first, but after research I don't think so.
Yeah they are discontinued now anyways. Hook Reveal the second generation of the Hook 2 had been much better
outstanding job!
Wish I had of seen this video before, it would have been a little less stressful ... lol
Many methods work, this one is the quickest for me, but like anything like this there's no right or wrong way.
Thanks.
António
Very helpful
Fantastic!
This did help, but still unsure of what to get, but I will figure it out
Hopefully it narrowed down what you have already been looking at
Dear in the first time you did a good video, but I have many dubts about what to buy.
Between those two I would get the Striker Vivid
I am looking for a fish finder GPS combo that will work well in 250 fathoms 1500ft water, what is your recommendation?
Nice sneaky Pearl Jam lyric 🤙
If one guy gets it and 10000 think "what the heck" its worth it ;)
I also applaud your PJ reference. One of the best concerts ever in Tampa back in 2003.
Nice! I'll see if I can find that Tampa show on UA-cam
Well, that does it! I'm going to have to stick to my Humminbird Pirahna 3 with burned out screen, because no way I can afford any of this stuff. LOL
Cheers 🎣
In that case you would need the Tripleshot transducer to get sidescan. The 3 in 1 will not work on the Hook Reveal units as they don't have an adapter
Excellent!
Thank you!!
Awesome INFO THX
Glad it was helpful!
I myself am rocking a 7.5inch unit
I have a Pro Nav Angler GPS that does so much in fishing and mapping . Now I can get a 9” chirp SV. Can get it i
Hi bro we will be getting a 32 ft cc we would need it for sounding structure very deep up to 1.5km and good sounding at marks at about 200m what do you recommend from airmar
Great video! Question is there a unit that has species specific targeting? I don't need a big screen I only have a 14 foot jon.
Not really... Garmin LiveScope is the closest but still can't positively identify the species
I bought a 7 sv Garmin in 2016. I made my 1436 jon into a bass boat in 2016. It's going strong today. My 7 inch hummingbird helix I bought 2 years ago is on my transom. Both were good
buys.
The tips in this video will help you narrow down the unit to by regardless of the boat/kayak you have
What if I just care about live mapping because I don’t fish that much out of this small boat?
If you want to be safe and not have to worry go to the battery directly first
Best maps for marine in Australia?
Great video))
I'm in dilemma.
I got 26foot tritoon boat.
Looking for 7" screen. Iive GPS build in. Lake maps(.I'm in Pennsylvania, lake wallenpaupackis pretty deep). And triple view transducer. I don't need networking in the unit. Looking to spend $500 top... I don't mind to get last year model)))
Am I asking too much for the price ?
Any would work. Just rig up a pole with a clamp system for the transducer to be on. Power it with a small 12v battery and you're all set
Do you know the best units for mapping in sc lakes
Great video, so many crappy robot voice videos with crap for info. Yours is far and away the best.
Thanks for the view
Any ideas.
Look at the Echomap 43CV for a good unit under $500
Does anyone have any idea what brand has best Indiana Kentucky mapping
@@InDepthSonar Thanks, I appreciate it.
Hello can u tell me pls if 600w enough for 80-100 meters deep water ?
Yes as long as it is 50/200 kHz
Thank you 👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching
Hey thanks for the video I have a question for you. My cousin bought a 25ft boat in Fiji Islands and I wanted to get him a fish finder that would work out there any recommendations?
Pretty much anything with work but you'd have to narrow down what you're looking for. My only advice for something used in saltwater would be to get a high quality transducer with it. Something from Airmar that is minimum 600w
Here in Aruba we fish choppy waters from 50 du to 1000ft of water, all I see is fishing done in calm waters where the depthsounder works well
Have a 28 Chris Craft with twin inboards .
Looking for a gps/fishfinder/thru hull transducer up to around $800
Any suggestions?
@@InDepthSonar sweet!thanks
Sooooo how do you find out which company charts your local waters the best?
First thing you need a little knowledge of the area you're going to be checking. I always recommend looking at an area you're familiar with so you know what it should look like. Second Navionics and CMAP both have chart viewers on their website so you can look at the charts before you buy them. Lake Master is the only other one so you can probably go into a retailer to get a demo on that chart. Asking around other anglers. What they're using is often a good idea as well

What did fisherman do before fish finders?
I would like to run my fish finder on my ski doo ( ice fishing) just for the GPS maps, what do I do with the transducer unplug it or leave it plugged in
You can leave it unplugged if you’re just using the gps
Thanx much
I live in South Carolina and fish lake Murray and santee I have a 20’ Jon boat and I have the 80lb thrust minn Kota trolling motor. I’m looking to spend no more than $1000 what fish finder what you think would be best for me?
Cheapest Garmin with a chart built in, the actual transducer , fish finding ability does not get better unless you upgrade an already expensive units transducer after the fact adding about another $1000.
It's all about transducer placement unless you are fishing deeper than 200ft at that point you will want a 1 kw transducer.
...all are good - agree, but no one offers a 'buy-back'...so all are just driven by the same sales strategy > consumers and more consumption... bottom line > no real upgrade on the same unit and no actual replacement but to buy a new one every other 2-3 years
For sure...just like pretty much everything else electronic today. They are disposable items, I can't argue that
Thanks
hey im getting an inflatable pontoon what do you thing will be good for that
What size screen and what budget?
@@InDepthSonar im gonna say 500 600 5 to 7 inch
I would check to see if the echo map 73 from Garmin fits in that price range. If not, then the echo map 63 would be a good choice
Hey there I just brought a kakay. Iam looking into get fishing finder my kakay is vibe sea ghost 110. I mustly do alot of river fishing. But I also do Ice fishing in the winter I live in Pennsylvania could you help me
Well so much to consider you really have to start to narrow down what you want and go from there
I just got a Hook Reveal for ice fishing this coming year. Looking forward to trying it out
I'm also from Southern Ontario.
I'd say best mapping is Navionics. In that price range I'd look at the Lowrance Hook Reveal Tripleshot
@@InDepthSonar thanks. Appreciate it!
In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.
if i have a minn kota what brands will talk to it? like will it talk to a lowrance?
For ipilot link only Humminbird. For US2 sonar, Humminbird, Lowrance, Garmin and Raymarine
